the title in 2005.
Muhlenberg coach Mike Donnelly (Ithaca
’75) is in his tenth season at the school with an
overall mark of 60-44 (.577).
THE SERIES: Saturday’s meeting will be the
55th in the series with Moravian holding a 31-21-2 advantage. Moravian
captured a 24-19 win last year in Allentown to snap a three-game
losing streak in the series. The Mules won 28-14 in the last game
played here at Rocco Calvo Field.
LAST TIME THEY MET: In Allentown last fall, Moravian
quarterback Jerry Venturino completed 12 of 21
passes for 206 yards and a touchdown, and he ran for 38 yards on
nine carries to lead the Greyhounds to a 24-19 victory over rival
Muhlenberg College in the season finale for both schools at Frank
Marino Field and Scotty Wood Stadium. Moravian, which snapped a
three-game losing streak to Muhlenberg, finishes the 2005 regular
season with a 6-4 overall record. Moravian wide receiver Ben
Hawkins and Muhlenberg quarterback Eric Santagato were
named the Most Valuable Players of the game. Hawkins
caught two passes for 125 yards and a touchdown that covered 64
yards, and he had one carry for 11 yards. The teams began the game
by trading punts on the first four possessions of the game. On the
Greyhounds’ third drive of the game, junior running back Chris
Jacoubs moved past former Widener University and NFL star
Billy “White Shoes” Johnson for fourth
in the MAC record books with 3,733 yards in his career. However,
Moravian was forced to punt for the third time in the first quarter.
Jacoubs finished the game with 89 yards on 34 carries
to raise his career total to 3,794 yards in three seasons including
954 in 2005. The Greyhounds would get possession back on the first
play of the second quarter when linebacker Chad DiFelice
intercepted a pass at the Mules’ 44-yard line and
returned it six yards. Moravian would move down to the 20-yard line,
using eight plays to cover the 18 yards. Kicker Brian Reckenbeil
(Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) connected on a 37-yard field
goal, his school record-tying ninth of the season, giving the Greyhounds
a 3-0 with 11:04 to play in the second quarter. However, Muhlenberg
returned the ensuing kickoff 94-yards for a touchdown after a fake
reverse. The extra-point gave the Mules a 7-3 lead with 10:48 left
in the first half. The kickoff return for a touchdown was Muhlenberg’s
fourth in the last seven games against Moravian. On Moravian’s
next drive, the Greyhounds faced a third-and-two from their own
31-yard line, when Venturino connected on a 61-yard
pass and run to Hawkins to set up a first-and goal
from the eight-yard line. On third and goal from the three-yard
line, Venturino handed the ball off to running
back Marc Panepinto (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS),
who tossed the ball back to Jacoubs who would dive
inside the left pylon for the touchdown, capping a six-play, 77-yard
drive. Reckenbeil added his 26th consecutive extra-point
for a 10-7 Moravian lead with 8:22 remaining in the second quarter.
The touchdown was Jacoubs’ tenth of the season and the 36th
of his career. Moravian would kickoff from midfield after a personal
foul penalty on the touchdown. The Mules ran a reverse on the kickoff,
but the Greyhounds were ready, forcing Muhlenberg to begin its drive
from its own 10-yard line. The Mules would pick-up two first downs,
but eventually were forced to punt for the third time in the game.
Muhlenberg would get the ball back after just two plays when the
Mules intercepted a Venturino pass at the Moravian
46-yard line. The Greyhound defense would force the Mules to turn
the ball over on downs at the Moravian 25-yard line with 39 seconds
left in the first half. The Mules received the opening kickoff of
the second half and were forced to punt after just three plays.
On Moravian’s first possession of the second half, the Greyhounds
faced a third-and-11 from their own 36-yard line when Venturino
connected with Hawkins on a 64-yard catch and run
down the right sideline for a touchdown. Reckenbeil’s
extra-point gave Moravian a 17-7 lead with 10:07 to play in the
third quarter. On the play, Moravian would take over at its own
13-yard line after forcing a punt. The Greyhounds faced a fourth-and
five when Venturino found wide receiver Shawn
Martell (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) for a 23-yard
reception to the ten-yard line. On the next play, fullback Kevin
Lukich run up the middle for a ten-yard touchdown, his
second touchdown of the year. Lukich finished the
game with 34 yards on six carries. Reckenbeil connected
on another extra-point to extend the Greyhounds’ lead to 24-7
with 1:42 remaining in the third quarter. The extra-point gave Reckenbeil
28 straight for the season and a total of 55 points. The Greyhounds
would again kickoff from midfield after another unsportsmanlike
penalty against the Mules on the touchdown. The kickoff would result
in a touchback. Muhlenberg would pick up three first downs and move
into Moravian territory. Two more first downs would give the Mules
a first-and-goal from the four-yard line on the final play of the
third quarter. Muhlenberg would score on a four-yard touchdown run
to cap a seven-play, 80-yard drive. The touchdown was Muhlenberg’s
first offensive touchdown in 14 quarters. The extra-point was wide
right to cut Moravian’s lead to 24-13 with 14:54 remaining
in the game. Moravian would gain one first down on its next possession;
however, the Greyhounds would be forced to punt. The Mules began
from their own 36-yard line. Muhlenberg would run just three plays
before attempting a fake punt. The Mules punter completed a pass,
but Moravian defensive back Carl Robinson (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet
Valley HS) tackled the Mule player short of the first down,
giving the Greyhounds possession at the Muhlenberg 44-yard line
with 9:52 remaining in the game. Moravian would punt the ball back
to the Mules after three plays. Muhlenberg needed just three plays
to cover the 80-yards and score its third touchdown of the game
on a 45-yard pass and run. The Mules went for two but Moravian defensive
back Israel Aguila (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) knocked
down the pass. However, the Greyhounds were called offsides on the
play, giving Muhlenberg a second chance. Muhlenberg attempted a
halfback option pass on the second try for two, but that was knocked
away by Moravian cornerback Tyler Chomik leaving
the score 24-19 Moravian with 7:16 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Greyhounds expected the Mules to onside kick, a play that has
burned Moravian several times in the last few games between the
schools, but the Mules kicked deep for a touchback. Moravian gained
one first down but was forced to punt. Corey Czerniak
punted down to Muhlenberg. As the Mules started to return the ball,
Moravian long snapper Pat Kane forced a fumble.
Kane fell on the ball to give the Greyhounds possession
back at the Muhlenberg 39-yard line with 4:55 remaining in the contest.
Moravian would gain one first down and move down to the Muhlenberg
21-yard line. On fourth-and four, Reckenbeil attempted
a 38-yard field goal that came up wide right and short. The Mules
took over at their own 21-yard line, trailing 24-19 with 2:22 remaining
on the clock and no time outs. Muhlenberg gained four yards on a
first down run; however, three incomplete passes turned the ball
back over to Moravian on the Mule 25-yard line with 1:55 remaining.
Moravian took three knees and a run by Panepinto
finished off the game. Martell caught three passes for 36 yards
while tight end Kris Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS)
and wide receiver Cletus Kilker each caught two
passes, Bisci for 15 yards and Kilker for 13 yards.
Linebacker Cliff Garr (Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS)
led the Moravian defense with seven tackles while safety Mario Bevilacqua
and linebacker Andrew Morrissey (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS)
each had six tackles. DiFelice finished with just
three tackles but he had one of Moravian’s three sacks and
two passes defended including his interception.
LAST WEEK: The Greyhounds lost their final Middle
Atlantic Conference game of the season, falling to Lebanon Valley
College, 55-21. Moravian, which will join the Centennial Conference
next fall, finishes its 48-yard affiliation with the MAC with an
overall record of 189-174-12. The 55 points allowed by Moravian
is the most since a 56-21 loss to Widener University on October
23, 1983, and the first time the Greyhounds have allowed over 50
points since a 52-26 loss to Muhlenberg College in 1999. Lebanon
Valley received the opening kickoff and a 43-yard return set the
Flying Dutchmen up at the Moravian 47-yard line. Lebanon Valley
needed just seven plays to take a 7-0 lead with 11:55 remaining
in the first quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Moravian sophomore
wide receiver Antuan Dixon (Kansas City, MO/St. Mark’s
HS) fumbled the ball at the Moravian 35-yard line with
Lebanon Valley recovering at the Moravian 41-yard line. On the first
play, Lebanon Valley scored on a 41-yard touchdown pass. The extra-point
built a 14-0 lead with 11:17 left in the first quarter. Dixon
would had another good return for the Greyhounds to the Lebanon
Valley 39-yard line, but Moravian sophomore running back Tyler
McCambridge (Northampton, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) fumbled
on the first play with Lebanon Valley recovering at its own 42-yard
line. The Flying Dutchmen drove 58 yards in just four plays for
a 21-0 lead with 9:32 to play in the first quarter. Moravian would
begin its second possession of the game at its own 37-yard line.
The Greyhounds put together a 12-play, 63-yard drive to score. Freshman
quarterback Ryan Rempe (Dickson City, PA/Mid-Valley HS)
connected on a five-yard pass to junior tight end Kris
Bisci for Bisci’s fifth touchdown
reception of the season. Sophomore Brian Reckenbeil added
the extra-point to cut the Lebanon Valley lead to 21-7 with 2:51
remaining in the first quarter. Rempe completed
seven of 13 passes for 59 yards while Bisci caught
five passes for 46 yards. The Flying Dutchmen answered right back
with a seven-play, 72-yard drive. The extra-point was blocked by
Moravian senior defensive line Alex Smith-Constantine (Secaucus,
NJ/Secaucus HS) to leave the score at 27-7 with 14:56 remaining
in the second quarter. The Greyhounds got another good kickoff return
from Dixon and started at the Lebanon Valley 43-yard
line. Eight plays later, McCambridge ran off the
left side for an 11-yard touchdown run including a flip over a defender
at the two-yard line into the end zone. Reckenbeil
added the extra-point to cut the deficit to 27-14 with 10:58 remaining
in the first half. Lebanon Valley scored again for a 34-14 lead
with 7:56 remaining in the second quarter. Each team would finally
have to punt in their next possession and the Flying Dutchmen forced
their third turnover of the game with an interception at the Moravian
19-yard line. Rempe’s pass was intended for junior wide receiver
Sean Hill (West Reading, PA/Wyomissing HS), who
tipped the ball in the air for the interception. Four plays later,
Lebanon Valley scored for a 41-14 lead with just 25 seconds remaining
in the first half. The Greyhounds needed just one play to start
the second half with a score. Hill returned the
second half kickoff to the Moravian 44-yard line. On the first offensive
play, McCambridge took the handoff and raced down
the right side line for a 56-yard touchdown run. Reckenbeil
made the extra-point to cut the Lebanon Valley lead to 41-21 with
14:29 remaining in the third quarter. The touchdown was McCambridge’s
seventh rushing touchdown on the year and eighth overall, and he
finished the game with 148 yards on 22 carries for his third 100-plus
yard game in four contests. The Moravian defense forced the Flying
Dutchmen into a three-and-out, but Greyhounds sophomore wide receiver
Tyler Hersch (Macungie, PA/Emmaus HS) fumbled the
punt return with Lebanon Valley covering the ball at the Moravian
43-yard line. The Greyhound defense would force another punt; however,
Moravian would only run three plays before punting itself. Lebanon
Valley would drive down into the red zone but faced a fourth and
two from the Moravian 16-yard line. The Flying Dutchmen attempted
a 33-yard field goal attempt but the kick was wide left. Moravian
took over at its own 20-yard line. Moravian ran three plays and
punted the ball away. The Flying Dutchmen started their drive at
the Moravian 39-yard line. Lebanon Valley would finish off the drive
with a ten-yard scoring pass for a 48-21 lead just two plays and
52 seconds into the fourth quarter. Moravian picked up on first
down on its next drive on a run Hill on a reverse,
but the Greyhound offense stalled and would be forced to punt again.
Lebanon Valley would take possession at its own 33-yard line and
drove down into the red zone and the Moravian four-yard line. Facing
a fourth-and-goal from the seven yard line, the Flying Dutchmen
connected on another touchdown for a 55-21 lead with 4:43 remaining
in the game. Hill added 18 yards on two rushing attempts, and he
caught one pass for ten yards while freshman tight end Brian
