MORAVIAN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SQUAD PICKED SECOND IN LANDMARK CONFERENCE PRESEASON POLL

MADISON, N.J. --- The 2007-08 Moravian College women’s basketball team has been selected second in the inaugural Landmark Conference season in a preseason poll selected by the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors.

The University of Scranton was picked first in the poll with 90 points while the Greyhounds are second with 74 points. The Catholic University of America and Juniata College are tied for third with 62 points each while Susquehanna University holds down the fifth spot with 58 points.  Drew University and The United States Merchant Marine Academy are tied for sixth in the poll with 28 points while Goucher College received 18 points.

The 2007-08 Moravian College women’s basketball team expects to continue its postseason run this year as the program begins its inaugural Landmark Conference season especially after six straight trips to the conference playoffs, a trip to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament two years ago, and an ECAC Division III Southern Championship last winter.

Head coach Mary Beth Spirk, who begins her 21st season with the Greyhounds, led Moravian to an overall record of 19-11 last year and returns nine letterwinners and three starters this season. Coach Spirk is excited about the team’s chances in the Landmark Conference and the future.

The Greyhounds will begin the 2007-08 season at the Emmanuel College Tournament in Boston, Massachusetts on Saturday, November 17th against Colby-Sawyer College with a 12:30 p.m. tip-off.  Moravian’s first-ever Landmark Conference game is on Tuesday, December 4th at The University of Scranton.  The top four teams in the conference will advance to the postseason which begins on Wednesday, February 27th.
