MORAVIAN COLLEGE HONORS SENIOR STUDENT-ATHLETES;
OZZIE BROWN & BETH PALY NAMED SENIOR ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Moravian College honored its 2008 senior student-athletes at its annual Senior Athletics Awards Banquet Wednesday night in Johnston Hall.  Softball standout Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) was named the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete while track & field athlete Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) was honored with the Outstanding Senior Male Athlete award.  The Blue & Grey Scholar Athlete awards were presented to women’s tennis player Rebecca Angstadt (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg HS) and field hockey standout Beverly Beaver (Merchantville, NJ/Pennsauken HS) shared the women’s award and track & field athlete Nathaniel Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS) earned the men’s honor.  The H.T.D. Gillespie Award for outstanding service to Moravian’s athletics program was presented to Dr. Robert Windolph.

Paly, pictured at right and a second baseman, helped Moravian's softball team to a 33-6 overall record this spring and the inaugural Landmark Conference Championship.  Paly, who was a member of the NFCA All-East Region Second Team as a freshman in 2005 and on the All-East Region First Team in 2007 and 2008, had a team leading 51 hits, a .418 average, 30 runs, eight doubles, two triples and 22 RBIs this spring.  Paly, who was named the 2008 Landmark Conference Player of the Year and a First Team Landmark All-Conference honoree, completed her career tied for fourth in school history with 190 hits and third in games played with 171.

Brown, pictured at left, won the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championship in the long jump, and he was third at the indoor national meet in the 55-meter hurdles to earn All-America honors.  Brown has qualified for six events at the 2008 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships to be head at the University of Wisconsin-OshKosh May 22nd through 24th.  He is qualified in the 100-meter dash, the 200 meter dash, the 110-meter high hurdles, the long jump, the decathlon and the 4x100-meter relay.  Other awards for Brown this year include the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Mideast Region in Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year as well as the male field athlete of the meet at the 2008 Landmark Conference Indoor Championships and the male track athlete of the meet at the 2008 Landmark Conference Outdoor Championships.  Brown won a total of nine individual and four relay titles at both the Landmark Conference Championships, and he had one runner-up and one third place finish.  At the 2008 ECAC Division III Indoor Championships, Brown won the 200-meter dash and was the runner-up in the 55-meter hurdles and the long jump.  He will compete at the 2008 ECAC Outdoor Championships at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts on May 15th and 16th.

Angstadt, pictured at right, helped the women’s tennis team to the 2008 Landmark Conference Championship and a 10-6 overall record. Angstadt named to the Landmark All-Conference Second Team while posting a 17-5 record at sixth singles for the Greyhounds. Angstadt was a 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team College Division Women’s At-Large selection and was one of Moravian’s 2008 Robbins ECAC Scholar-Athletes.  Angstadt has a 4.00 grade point average, and she is majoring in mathematics and accounting.

Beaver, pictured at left and a midfielder, helped Moravian to a 7-8 record this past fall and a 2-4 mark in the inaugural Landmark Conference season.  Beaver started in all 15 matches for the Greyhounds this past season and earned a spot on the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll as well as the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Academic Squad. Beaver was also a manager for the Moravian men's basketball team and is graduating with honors.  Beaver has a 3.83 grade point average, and she is majoring in history and sociology.

Tussey, pictured at right and a hurdler and sprinter, helped the Greyhounds win the 2008 Landmark Conference Outdoor Championship after missing the indoor meet due to an injury.  Tussey won the 400-meter dash and the 400-meter hurdles at the Landmark Championships and he was part of Moravian’s winning 4x400-meter relay team.  He was the runner-up in the 110-meter high hurdles, and Tussey has qualified for the 2008 NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles.  Tussey was Moravian’s other 2008 Robbins ECAC Scholar-Athlete.  Tussey has a 3.47 grade point average, and he is majoring in biology.

Windolph has made many contributions to the Moravian Athletic Department since arriving at the school in 1969.  Windolph is retiring this year after serving as Dean of Residence Life since 1979.  He has helped the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in fundraising programs as well as served as a faculty-staff guest coach.
