MORAVIAN MEN’S TENNIS SQUAD TO TRAVEL TO DREW UNIVERSITY IN LANDMARK CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

BETHLEHEM, PA --- The Moravian College men’s tennis team will be making its first-ever appearance in a conference championship match as the second seeded Greyhounds travel to top seed Drew University for the 2009 Landmark Conference Championship match on Saturday, May 2nd at 1:00 p.m. in Madison, New Jersey.

The Greyhounds are 13-5 overall and posted a 6-1 mark in the Landmark Conference regular season while the Rangers are 11-5 overall and 7-0 in Landmark Conference action.  Moravian advanced to the title match with a 6-0 victory over third seed The University of Scranton in Tuesday’s semifinals while Drew, which is looking for its ninth straight conference title, defeated fourth seed Juniata College, 8-1.

Moravian co-head coaches Jim Walker and Neil Caniga have the Greyhounds in the postseason for the third straight season with a team that includes just one senior.  Moravian played its first home playoff match on Tuesday since the 1996 season, when the program set the school record for wins with a 13-3 mark, a total that has been matched this spring.  Moravian won the 1962 MAC Northern Championship, and the Greyhounds were the MAC Commonwealth League Champion in 1996.

Freshman Kevin Holze (Bayside, NY/St. Francis Prep HS), who was named this week’s Landmark Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, leads Moravian in singles action with a 21-3 mark including a 10-2 record at third singles and a 3-0 slate at second singles.  Holze is the current school record holder for singles wins in a season.  Freshman Drew Shreter (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS) has a 19-3 mark this season including a 9-2 slate at fourth singles.  Shreter started the year at 13-0 in singles play and has also passed the previous school record of 17 singles victories in a season.

Freshman Nick Yelito (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS) has a 15-5 mark including an 8-2 at sixth singles.  Junior Chandler Forman (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth HS) is 17-5 in singles action with a 9-1 record at fifth singles while junior Ian Box (Charlestown, MA/The Rivers School) was 12-7 on the year with a 9-3 slate at second singles before getting a season ending injury last week.  Junior Jason Bonilla (Whitestone, NY/Bayside HS) is 5-3 in singles action while sophomore Doug Morrow (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) is 9-14 in singles with a 6-9 in the first position in the line-up.  Senior Keith Feinman (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield HS) has won one of three singles matches this year.

In doubles action, Holze and Shreter have combined for a 15-6 record, which is the school single season doubles win record, with a 9-5 slate at second doubles.  Box and Morrow are 11-8 including a 9-5 record at first doubles while Forman and sophomore Thomas Turcich (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township HS) are 11-3 including a 9-3 mark at third doubles.  Bonilla and Forman have combined for a 3-4 doubles record while Bonilla and Yelito are 1-1 in doubles action.  Bonilla and Feinman are 1-0 in doubles while Feinman and Holze had a 1-0 mark.  Morrow and Yelito have combined for a 2-1 mark since Box’s injury.
