MORAVIAN HAS 41 STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED TO THE LANDMARK CONFERENCE FALL ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL

MADISON, NJ --- The Landmark Conference has recognized 354 student-athletes including 41 from Moravian College by selecting them for the 2008 Fall Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll. The honorees were selected from all eight Landmark Conference institutions.

The Landmark Academic Honor Roll recognizes all fall student athletes of sophomore standing or older with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The student-athletes must complete the fall season in good standing with their team. All eight Landmark Conference institutions placed at least 16 athletes on the Academic Honor Roll and all six fall Landmark sports were represented on the team.

The Landmark Fall All-Academic Team, which features two male and two female student-athletes from each Landmark institution will be released later this fall.

The Landmark Conference is in its second season of competition and includes eight like-minded institutions covering the Mid-Atlantic region. The Landmark Conference crowned six team championships this fall, and sent nine programs to either the NCAA or ECAC postseason.

Moravian had student-athletes selected from all six of its fall teams that compete in the conference with the field hockey team leading the way with 12 honorees.  The men's and women’s soccer programs each placed eight student-athletes on the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll.  Moravian’s men’s cross country team had six members make the list while four members from the women’s cross country program were honored.  The women’s volleyball squad had three student-athletes named to the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll.

The field hockey team, which posted a 7-11 overall record had a trio of seniors on the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll, defender Laura Boyd (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS), forward Julia Garofalo (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Township HS), and midfielder/defender Lindsey Santacross (Bennington, VT/Mount Academy HS).

Also making the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll were juniors Samantha Bell (Sparta, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS), Patricia Eck (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS), Aliina Ross (Paoli, PA/Conestoga), and Damara Varney (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) along with sophomore Maura Acox (Old Bridge, NJ/St. John Vianney HS), Lizzette Arias (Arlington, VA/Wakefield HS), Alexandra Lopez (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS), Rebecca Renaldo (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS), and Jillian Schnable (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS).

The women’s soccer won the 2008 Landmark Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the second straight season.  Senior midfielder Tracy Fitzpatrick (Wantage, NJ/High Point Regional HS) is the 2008 Landmark Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the year, and earned First Team All-Conference honors. Senior defender Alexandra Frascella (Chatham, NJ/Chatham HS) received Landmark All-Conference Second Team.

Other team members in the fall academic honor roll are juniors Brittany Deiling (Chews Landing, NJ/Triton Regional HS), Terri Roberts (Danville, PA/Danville HS), Alessandra Valdetara (Butler, NJ/Butler HS), JeriAnne Weiss (Allentown, PA/Salisbury HS), Kathleen Wise (Ardsley, PA/Abington HS) and sophomore Sarah Haplin (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West HS).

Senior goalie Chris Nederostek (Lansdale, PA/Christopher Dock HS) and junior midfielder Gary Grimes (Howell, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy HS) from the men’s soccer team both earned Landmark All-Conference Second Team honors and leads the men’s soccer squads academic honor roll honorees.  The Greyhounds were 6-9-2 overall this season. 

Joining them on the squad are junior midfielder Evan Outlaw (Zion Grove, PA/Pleasant Valley HS), defender Blake Ritchey (Harleysville, PA/Souderton HS), sophomore midfielder Brian Hunscher (Ann Arbor, MI/Ann Arbor HS), forward Christopher Walsh (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore HS), defender Peter Weiss (Allentown, PA/William Allen HS), and goal keeper Bryant White (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS).

The Greyhound men’s cross country teams honorees included senior John McCullough (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan HS), juniors Timothy Betz (Havertown, PA/Haverford HS) and Steven DeFazio (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS), and sophomores Jesse Miller (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg HS), Jacob Tazik (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing HS) and Connor Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS). Skutches also received Landmark All-Conference First Team honors placing 7th out of 82 in the Landmark Conference Championships. Moravian placed third at the 2008 Landmark Conference Championships.

Leading the honorees for the women’s cross country squad, which was earned Landmark All-Conference Second Team accolades was senior Kelly Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack HS).  Also making the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll are senior Stephanie Miller (Easton, PA/Easton) and sophomores Tara Chiarella (Hallstead, PA/Montrose Area HS) and Kaleen Holden (Scranton, PA/Bishop Hannan HS).

A trio of sophomores are the Landmark Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll selections from the Moravian women’s volleyball team, which finished 14-19 overall and played in the Landmark Conference Tournament Semifinals.  These honorees are outside hitter Molly DuVall (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township HS), middle hitter Mary King (Paramus, NJ/Paramus HS) and middle hitter Christine Reeser (Telford, PA/Christopher Dock HS).
