MORAVIAN BASKETBALL TEAMS TO HOST ANNUAL CANCER AWARNESS DAY ON FEBRUARY 14TH

BETHLEHEM, PA --- The Moravian College women’s and men’s basketball teams will be hosting their annual Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday February 14, 2009 when the Greyhounds host the Goucher College in a Landmark Conference doubleheader. The women’s game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in Johnston Hall followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.

The WBCA/Pink Zone ™ initiative is a global unified effort for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities, and beyond.  Last year over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, raising nearly $1 million for breast cancer awareness and research. All proceeds from pledges, raffles, and concessions will be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. The basketball programs are asking that faculty, staff, and students join us in this fight.  In the past, the Moravian College community has been very generous in your support of this event.

The teams will also be accepting pledges for each assist the Moravian teams make in each game.  Currently, the men’s team is averaging ten assists per game while the women are averaging 14 assists, so a pledge of $1 would be a $24 donation for the event.  There will also be raffle tickets available for prizes during both games. To make a donation, please contact women's asssistant coach Amy Ender at aendler@moravian.edu.

For the second straight season, the women’s team will be wearing pink uniforms, one of the few NCAA Division III schools to done pink uniforms for the initiative.  Dr. James Frommer, the athletics team physician, and Jessie Coughlin Milner ’99, donated money to purchase these uniforms a year ago.

The men’s basketball coaching staff will be wearing sneakers for the game in support of the “Coaches vs. Cancer” initiative.
