MORAVIAN WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM AWARDED BERTH TO 2009 ECAC DIVISION III SOUTH TOURNAMENT

CAPE COD, MA --- The Moravian College women's soccer team has been awarded a berth in the 2009 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III South Championships with the Greyhounds earning the seventh seed. The Greyhounds will travel to second seeded Stevenson University (14-3-2) on Wednesday, November 11th for a first round match at 2:00 p.m. on Stevenson’s Owings Mills campus.

Wednesday's other quarterfinal matches will have top seed Penn State-Altoona (17-4-1) hosting eighth seeded La Roche College (11-8-1), third seeded Swarthmore College (13-4-1) hosting sixth seed Centenary College (14-4-1) and fourth seeded Penn State-Behrend (13-3-3) hosting fifth seed Grove City College (11-6-3).  The semifinals and finals are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, November 14th and 15th at the highest remaining seed.  The Moravian-Stevenson winner will play the winner of the Swarthmore-Centenary match while the winner of Penn State-Altoona-La Roche will take on the winner of Penn State-Behrend-Grove City.

Moravian, under the direction of 11th year head coach Eric Lambinus, has an 8-7-2 record this season with a 3-2-1 slate in Landmark Conference action. The Greyhounds are making their second appearance in the ECAC Championships, and the last time Moravian played in the ECAC Tournament, the squad reached the finals of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championships in 2003.  Moravian has reached the NCAA Division III Tournament in three of the last four years, and the Greyhounds are making their seventh postseason appearance in the 16-year history of the program, which has an all-time record of 181-97-18.

Sophomore forward Arielle Caldas (Cherry Hills, NJ/Cherry Hills HS) leads Moravian in scoring with 11 goals and three assists for 25 points, and she has three game-winning goals despite missing four matches due to injury.  Junior midfielder/forward Shannon McEvoy (Lafayette, NJ/High Point Regional HS) has added 15 points on five goals and five assists while senior midfielder Alessandra Valdetara (Butler, NJ/Butler HS) has five goals and three assists for 13 points with one game winning goal.

Freshmen midfielder Tess Lowe (Cranford, NJ/Union Catholic HS) has added two goals and three assists for seven points while junior midfielder/forward Emily Rodriguez (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) has contributed a team high seven assists this year.  Sophomore defender Diana Feldmann (York, PA/Central York HS) has hit the back of the net twice to go along with two assists for six points this season while sophomore midfielder Kim Gogel (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park HS) has six points on a goal and four assists despite missing eight matches to an injury.

Junior midfielder Tara Alberse (New Providence, NJ/New Providence HS) and freshman defender Eileen Black (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) each have two goals and an assist for five points while senior midfielder JeriAnne Weiss (Allentown, PA/Salisbury HS) has a goal and an assist for three points.  Junior forward Jenelle Mirro (Bath, PA/Notre Dame HS), who has missed eight contests with an injury, and sophomore midfielder Kristin Popovice (Roseto, PA/Bangor HS) have each netted one goal for the Greyhounds with Mirro scoring a game-winner.  Senior defender Terri Roberts (Danville, PA/Danville HS), sophomore defender Elizabeth Brundage (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights HS) and freshmen midfielder Jenna Stickle (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) each have one assist.

Junior goalie Sarah Halpin (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West HS) has posted 70 saves, a 1.26 goals-against average, five shutouts and an 8-7-2 record in 1,565 minutes of action.  Freshman Tori Korona (Easton, PA/Easton HS) has seen eight minutes in goal, and the Greyhounds have five team saves this fall.

Stevenson is making its second straight appearance in the ECAC South Championship Tournament.  The Mustangs, under the direction of third-year coach Graeme Millar, are 14-3-2 on the season including a 7-1 mark in the Capital Athletic Conference.  Stevenson is coming off of a 2-2 tie against the University of Mary Washington in the CAC Championship match on Saturday that saw Mary Washington earn the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament on penalty kicks, 4-2.

Sophomore forward Stephanie Eyler leads the Mustangs on the field with 20 goals and four assists for 44 points with five game-winning goals while freshman forward Melinda Kane has contributed 23 points on nine goals, three of which are game-winning goals, and five assists.  Junior midfielder/forward Heather Redding has eight goals with two game-winners, and two assists for 18 points on the year while senior midfielder Katie Decker has added three goals and a team high ten assists for 16 points.

Sophomore forward/midfielder Samantha Novy has six goals and three assists for 15 points this season while junior forward/midfielder Allison Humphries has two goals and three assists for seven points.  Freshman defender Taylor Zimmerman and junior defender Kaitlyn Amos each have a goal and an assist for Stevenson while freshman goalie Lauren Weitzman has a goal.  Senior defender Lauren Bauer has two assists on the year while sophomore defender/midfielder Christina Dimarco and sophomore defender Julie Dempsey each had an assist for the Mustangs.

In goal, Weitzman has a 9-2-2 record to go with a 1.08 goals-against average, 65 saves and two shutouts in 1,165 minutes of action.  Sophomore goalie Brittany Ross has posted a 5-1 record with a shutout, an 0.89 goals-against average and 33 saves in 604 minutes in goal.  The Mustangs have a total of seven shutouts and two team saves this season.
