MORAVIAN ANNOUNCED AS DIVISION III WINNER FOR 2010 WBCA PINK ZONE® CONTEST PRESENTED BY JOSTENS

ATLANTA, GA --- The Moravian College women’s basketball team has been announced as the NCAA Division III winner of the 2010 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Pink Zone® Contest presented by Jostens.

The contest is an effort to reward participating teams in the WBCA Pink Zone who are also raising funds for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund®, in partnership with The V Foundation.  Moravian raised $6,100 this year, the top amount from an NCAA Division III school.

“The Moravian College women’s basketball team, players and coaching staff, are honored to be recognized as the top Division III fundraising team,” stated head coach Mary Beth Spirk.  “This year was a collaborative effort with the entire Lehigh Valley community, especially Parkland and Catasauqua High Schools, as we dedicated the season, in addition to our fundraising/awareness efforts, to Patti Heffner, the mother of Amy, who is a vital member of our team.  The WBCA and Kay Yow Cancer Fund is a tremendous cause and we will continue to raise money and awareness so that fewer lives are lost and a cure can be found.  It is a privilege to accept this award in the memory of Patti and all those who continue to fight.”

Coach Spirk along with the head coaches from North Carolina State University (NCAA Division I), Bentley University (NCAA Division II), Viterbo University (NAIA), Southwestern Community College (JC/CC) and Sandia High School (High School/AAU) will be present a piece of jewelry by Jostens from the Jostens Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund Jewelry Collection as well as a plaque at the 2010 WBCA National Convention in San Antonio, Texas that begins on Friday, April 2nd.  NC State, Bentley, Southwestern Community College and Sandia High School are repeat winners from 2009 while Moravian was second in Division III a year ago after raising $5,200.

“Thank you so much to these teams that raised the most funding in support of the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, the WBCA's charity of choice,” said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. “We appreciate the efforts of the entire women's basketball community in making a difference in the fight against cancer and supporting the WBCA Pink Zone initiative.”

Former Greyhound player and assistant coach Cathy Huegler ’99 will be accepting the award for Coach Spirk Friday evening due to travel and the time of the presentation.  The presentation will be podcast on Shootaround with Beth and Debbie that can be viewed at http://www.wbca.org/default.asp at 10:30 p.m. EDT on Friday.
