MORAVIAN PLACES 2ND AS SUSQUEHANNA WINS FIRST LANDMARK PRESIDENT’S ALL SPORTS CUP TITLE

MADISON, N.J. – Susquehanna University has won the 2009-10 Landmark Conference President’s All Sports Cup becoming the first team in the three-year history of the Landmark Conference to lead the standings for the cup all three sports seasons.

Susquehanna wrested the title away from two-time defending champion Moravian College by .183 points as the Crusaders posted a total of 6.850. Moravian put together a spirited rally in the spring season before ultimately finishing with a total of 6.667. The University of Scranton placed third with 5.984 points while The Catholic University of America was in the top half with 5.713 points.

The Landmark President’s All Sports Cup is awarded based on a formula that rewards institutions for their finishes in the regular season conference standings as well as results in Landmark postseason competition. The formula also takes into account the number of sports a school sponsors.

Susquehanna pulled into the lead in the fall and held the lead throughout the year thanks to remarkable consistency. The Crusaders won one Landmark Championship, but qualified for the Landmark postseason in all but two sports. The team was the regular season runner-up in softball in the spring, and also had runner-up finishes in men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

Moravian won four titles during the spring to vault from third to second raising its score .773 points in the final season. The Greyhounds picked up wins in baseball, softball, men’s outdoor track & field and women’s outdoor track & field, giving them a total of seven team titles over the course of the year.

Scranton finishes in the top-3 in the standings for the third time in as many seasons after runner-up performances each of the past two years. The Royals finished second in the regular season standings in men’s and women’s tennis in the spring to move from fifth to third in the final rankings. The team had one Championship to its credit on the season, and missed the postseason in only four sports during the year.

Catholic picked up its third Landmark Championship during the spring with the women’s lacrosse team earning a title, while the men’s lacrosse and baseball teams both also finished second in the regular season standings. The Cardinals reached the postseason in eight of 12 sports with postseason competition.

The Landmark Conference will conclude the 2010-11 season with 10 athletes competing at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships this weekend. In its third season, the Landmark sent 16 teams to NCAA Tournaments and had a total of 20 athletes qualify for NCAA Championships in cross country, swimming & diving, and indoor and outdoor track & field.
