FIVE MORAVIAN TRACK & FIELD STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED TO USTFCCCA DIVISION III ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMS

NEW ORLEANS, LA --- Five members of the Moravian College track & field teams have been named to the 2010 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III All-Academic Teams.

On the men’s side, sophomore Timothy Layng (Canton, PA/Canton HS) and Nicco Dalpiaz (Sunbury, PA/Shikellamy HS) are two of 202 student-athletes from 73 NCAA Division III institutions to win the award.  On the women’s side, seniors Jessica Posimo (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) and Rachel Riggs (Gettysburg, PA/ Gettysburg HS) and junior Mary King (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus HS) are three of 330 student-athletes from 99 schools.  The USTFCCCA honors Division III individuals for their academic and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.  To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective event.

Layng, a pole vaulter, met the provisional qualifying height both indoors and outdoors this past season.  Layng was tied for 14th in the nation indoors at a school record height of 4.76 meters (15 feet, 7 ¼ inches), and he was tied for 29th outdoors at 4.72 meters (15 feet, 5 ¾ inches).  He just missed the field for the indoor national championship meet.

Dalpiaz, also a pole vaulter, was 20th in the country during the outdoor season, recording a school record height of 4.80 meters (15 feet, nine inches).  The duo helped Moravian capture both the 2010 Landmark Conference indoor and outdoor championships.

Riggs, a sprinter and jumper, was part of Moravian’s 4x100-meter relay squad during the outdoor season which qualified for the NCAA outdoor meet at 47.91 seconds.  In her first competition at nationals, Riggs helped Moravian’s quartet earn All-American honors with a sixth place finish in a school record time of 46.95 seconds.

Posimo, also a sprinter and jumper, was tied for 23rd in the nation outdoors in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.88 seconds.  While she didn’t compete in the national meet this season, Posimo was a four-time performer at the national championships, earning All-American honors as part of Moravian’s 4x100-meter relay team in 2009.

King, a javelin thrower, was 16th in the country with a qualifying toss of 41.24 meters 9135 feet, four inches), and she placed 14th at the NCAA meet at 37.86 meters (124 feet, two inches).  King was competing at nationals for the second time after earning All-American accolades as a freshman in 2008.

The trio helped the women capture their third straight Landmark Conference Championships both indoors and outdoors.
