MORAVIAN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SQUAD PICKED SECOND IN LANDMARK CONFERENCE PRESEASON POLL
MADISON, N.J. --- The 2010-11 Moravian College women’s basketball team has been selected to finish second in the Landmark Conference season in a preseason poll selected by the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors.
The University of Scranton was a near unanimous choice at the top of the poll with 97 points while the defending champion Greyhounds had 78 points. Juniata College and Susquehanna University are third and fourth with 71 and 60 points respectively while The Catholic University of America holds down the fifth spot with 54 points. Drew University is sixth with 47 points while Goucher College is seventh with 22 points. The United States Merchant Marine Academy rounds out the poll with 18 points.
After the third best season in Greyhound history, in which the team posted a 25-3 record, captured its first Landmark Conference Championship and eighth NCAA bid, the Moravian women’s basketball team looks to continue the tradition of excellence in 2010-11.
Head coach Mary Beth Spirk, entering her 24th season on the bench, will lead a team mixed with several veterans including seven letterwinners and one starter and a host of newcomers. Under Spirk’s direction, the 2009-10 Greyhounds posted the first ever undefeated season in Landmark Conference history, 14-0, and hosted the NCAA Division III Tournament First and Second Round for the second straight year.
The Greyhounds will begin the regular season against long time rival Muhlenberg College on Monday, November 15th with a 6:00 p.m. tip-off at Memorial Hall in Allentown. Moravian will then travel to Gwynedd-Mercy College in Gwynedd Valley for tournament.
