FOUR MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES TO COMPETE AT NCAA DIVISION III INDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

COLUMBUS, OH --- Moravian College has four student-athletes that will compete at the 2011 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by the Capital University in Columbus, Ohio on Friday and Saturday, March 11th and 12th.

Junior Abby Schaffer (Easton, PA/Easton HS) will compete in the women’s pole vault for the second straight season but the first for Moravian after competing at Widener her first two years.  Schaffer is tied the best vault of the 2011 season at a height of 4.12 meters (13 feet, 6 ¼ inches).  The pole vault is scheduled to begin on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. with 16 competitors.  Schaffer was the runner-up last year’s indoor championships to Moravian’s Anna Heim, who set the NCAA record at last year’s meet with a vault of 4.16 meters (13 feet, 7 ¾ inches).

Sophomore Micah Leonard (York, PA/William Penn HS) is making her second trip to the indoor national championships, and she will compete in a pair of events.  Leonard is ranked 11th entering the long jump with a season best lead of 5.58 meters (18 feet, 3 ¾ inches), and will compete in the event on Friday at 9:30 am.  Leonard will also compete in the triple jump on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. after qualifying 11th with a distance of 11.48 meters (37 feet, six inches).

Moravian also has two men competing at the national championships.  Senior Eric Woodruff (Brodheadsville, PA/Pius X HS), who is the two-time defending national champion in the 200-meter dash outdoors, is making his first trip to the indoor meet.  Woodruff has the top time in the 55-meter dash with a school record 6.37 seconds, and he will compete in the preliminaries on Friday at 7:20 p.m.  The finals of the 55-meter dash are set for 6:05 p.m. on Saturday.

Junior Timothy Layng (Canton, PA/Canton HS) will also be making his first trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships to compete in the pole vault.  Layng is ranked 11th of 12 competitors with a school record height of 4.86 meters (15 feet, 11 ¼ inches).  The men’s pole vault is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
