MORAVIAN’S SCHAFFER & WOODRUFF NAMED MIDEAST REGION FEMALE FIELD AND
MALE TRACK ATHLETES OF THE YEAR BY USTFCCCA

NEW ORLEANS, LA --- Junior pole vaulter Abigail Schaffer (Easton, PA/Easton HS) of the Moravian College indoor track & field team has been named the 2011 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III Mideast Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year while senior sprinter Eric Woodruff (Brodheadsville, PA/Pius X HS) has earned Male Indoor Track Athlete of the Year announced Wednesday.

The duo will be honored at the championship banquet Thursday evening in Columbus, Ohio as they prepare to compete in the 2011 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by the Capital University on Friday and Saturday, March 11th and 12th.

Schaffer enters the NCAA Championships as the co-No. 1 seed in the pole vault, having earned her season’s best of 13-6¼ (4.12m) last weekend at the ECAC Division III Championships. Schaffer was the pole vault champion at the 2011 Landmark Conference Championships, and has vaulted over four meters in her last for meets.  Schaffer, pictured at left, was the runner-up at the NCAA Championships in 2010 while competing as a member of the Widener University track & field Team.  She will compete on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Woodruff earned 2011 Landmark Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Year honors after winning conference titles in the 55-meter and 200-meter dashes and running a leg of the winning 4×200-meter relay. He capped an undefeated regular season in the 55/60 meters with a win at the recent ECAC Division III Championships. Woodruff is the top-ranked competitor in the 55-meter dash heading into this weekend’s NCAA Division III Indoor Championships with a season-best clocking of 6.37 seconds.  Woodruff, pictured at right, will compete in the preliminaries on Friday at 7:20 p.m.  The finals of the 55-meter dash are set for 6:05 p.m. on Saturday.
