MORAVIAN ANNOUNCED AS DIVISION III WINNER FOR 2011 WBCA PINK ZONE® CONTEST PRESENTED BY JOSTENS

CARY, NC --- The Moravian College women’s basketball team has been announced as the NCAA Division III winner of the 2011 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Pink Zone® Contest presented by Jostens.

The contest is an effort to reward participating teams in the WBCA Pink Zone who are also raising funds for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund®, in partnership with The V Foundation.  Moravian raised $5,825 this year, the top amount from an NCAA Division III school.  Moravian was also the top NCAA Division III team in 2010 at $6,100 and was second in 2009 with a total of $5,200.

“The Moravian College women’s basketball team, players and coaching staff, are honored to be recognized as the top Division III fundraising team for a second straight year,” stated head coach Mary Beth Spirk.  “The WBCA and Kay Yow Cancer Fund is a tremendous cause and we will continue to raise money and awareness so that fewer lives are lost and a cure can be found.  We had an outstanding year with our “Assist with the Fight” campaign, and Jessica Foran ’10 had a wine tasting event that helped raise $800 for us.  It is a privilege to accept this award for all those who continue to fight.”

Coach Spirk along with the head coaches from Texas A&M University (NCAA Division I), Angelo State University (NCAA Division II), Viterbo University (NAIA), Schoolcraft College (JC/CC) and Hays High School (High School/AAU) were presented a piece of jewelry by Jostens from the Jostens Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund Jewelry Collection as well as a plaque at the 2011 WBCA National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana Monday evening during the Kay Yow Cancer Fund Appreciation Reception.

“We appreciate the extraordinary efforts that each of these teams put forth in raising funds for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund,” said Marsha Sharp, Kay Yow Cancer Fund Executive Director. “The entire women’s basketball community is so supportive of the WBCA Pink Zone initiative and we are so thankful for their efforts in the fight against cancer.”

Two teams earn this recognition for the second consecutive year, including Moravian and Viterbo.
