COUGHLIN NAMED GTE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Senior Jessie Coughlin (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic HS) of the
Moravian College womens tennis team has been named to the 1999 GTE Academic All-America® College
Division Spring At-Large Third Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors
of America.
The College Division is made up of all the NCAA Division II and III Schools in the nation
as well as all NAIA schools. Student-athletes from NCAA Division I schools are named to
the University Division Teams. To be eligible for GTE Academic All-America® accolades,
a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 grade-point average, be a sophomore, junior
or senior and be a starter or significant reserve. The spring at-large team for women is
made up of student-athletes that compete in crew, golf, lacrosse, tennis and track and
field.
Coughlin, who graduated in May with a 3.78 grade-point average in economics, was also
named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Executive Directors All-Academic Team for
tennis during the Lady Greyhounds season last fall. She help Moravian win the MAC Championship
in 1996, 1997 and 1998 as well as the MAC Commonwealth League title in 1996 and 1998. Moravian
has a 30-match winning streak intact heading into the 1999 season.
Coughlin completed the 1998 season with perfect 14-0 record and completed her singles
career at Moravian with the highest winning percentage in school history at .969, winning
62 of 64 career matches. Both of Coughlins career losses came in the postseason during
the MAC Individual Tournament. In doubles action during her career, Coughlin posted a 40-6
career record.
Coughlin also played guard for the Lady Greyhound womens basketball squad. This
past season, Coughlin became the 12th player in school history to score 1,000 points in
a career. She completed her career with 1,137 points (7th all-time), 346 assists (2nd all-time),
312 steals (2nd all-time) and 166 three-pointers (3rd all-time) in 99 career games. Coughlin
helped the basketball team to the MAC playoffs as a freshman, sophomore and junior.
Coughlin is the 12th Moravian student-athletes to be named GTE Academic All-America® Teams.
There have been a total of 16 Academic All-Americans at Moravian including 11 over the
past six years.
