MORAVIAN TO INDUCT SEVEN INTO ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
DAVID OBRIEN NAMED HERBSTMAN AWARD WINNER
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Michael S. Brichta (Center Valley), Hannah Baum Brown (Allentown), Michael
Grigoruk (Wescosville), Andrea Heller (Fairless Hills), Kenneth J. King
(Staten Island, NY), William Ormsby (Fredericksburg, VA) and Patrice M.
Golden Turner (Center Valley) make up the class of 1999 that will be inducted into
the Moravian College Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, November 6th.
Also being honored at the 1999 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be David OBrien
(North Wales) with the Robert Martin Herbstman Award and the 1970 football team.
Brichta, who graduated in 1978 and was named the Moravian College Outstanding Senior Male
Athlete the same year, was a four-year letterwinner on the football team. He was twice
named the Greyhounds Most Valuable Player Lineman and earned All-Middle Atlantic Conference
First Team Honors in 1975, 1976 and 1977. Brichta, who was on the All-MAC Honorable Mention
team in 1974, was the MAC Southern Division MVP Lineman in 1977. He was also Moravians
Scholar-Athlete award winner. Brichta currently works as Manager of Information Services
for the City of Bethlehem.
Brown graduated from Moravian in 1928 and lettered four seasons in five sports, womens
basketball, field hockey, volleyball, archery and softball. Brown was the team captain
of the womens basketball team as a junior and as a senior. She also served as president
of the Womens Athletic Association the same years. Brown, who won the Silver Basketball
and Silver Hockey Stick awards at Moravian, is a retired teacher.
Grigoruk, who graduated in 1985, competed in soccer for the Greyhounds. He was a four-year
letter winner and led Moravian to the schools first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance
in 1982. Grigoruk was named to the MAC All-Star First Team twice as a goalkeeper and was
honored as the MVP of the 1983 MAC Championship match, which was won by Moravian. Grigoruk
currently works for Boucher & James, Inc., Consulting Engineers in Quakertown.
Heller, a 1989 Moravian graduate, played two sports while attending the Bethlehem school.
She was a four-year letterwinner on the womens basketball and softball teams. Heller,
who was the schools Outstanding Senior Female Athlete in 1989, was named the womens
basketball MVP as a senior. She scored 1,038 points and grabbed 500 rebounds during her
career that saw her named the MAC Southwest Division MVP in 1988-89. On the softball diamond,
Heller was honored on the MAC All-Star Team as a sophomore, junior and senior and set the
old school record for hits in a career with 80. Heller is employed by Philip Morris, USA.
King graduated from Moravian in 1977 and was the first player to reach 1,000 yards rushing
in two seasons and the only player to reach 2,000 yards in three years for the Greyhound
football team. King earned three letters with the football team and was named the squads
MVP as a junior in 1975. In his senior season, King was named to the MAC Southern Division
All-Star First Team and set the school record with 919 yards to finish with a career total
of 2,177 yards. Kings currently works as a fire fighter in the New York City Fire
Department and as a substitute teacher on the intermediate level.
Ormsby, who completed his degree at Moravian in 1980, was a four-year letterwinner on
the football team. He was a three-time MAC All-Star First Team Honoree and was named to
the MAC Honorable Mention squad as a freshman. Ormsby was both the Greyhounds captain
and MVP as a senior in 1979. He also received the Ed Schedler Memorial Trophy as the MVP
of the 1978 Homecoming game. Ormsby, who completed his career with 378 tackles, works for
the United States Department of Defense at the Dahlgren Navy Base in Dahlgren, Virginia.
Turner is a 1985 graduate of Moravian and competed in three sports while in school. She
earned four letters with the womens basketball team and also competed in volleyball
for two seasons and softball for one year. On the basketball court, Turner was a MAC All-Star
as a sophomore, junior and senior as well as an ECAC All-Star as a senior. She was the
teams MVP her final two years and was the Lady Greyhounds captain as a senior. Turner,
who scored 1,022 points during her career, currently works as a teacher in the Bethlehem
Area School District.
OBrien, who was a four-year letterwinner on the basketball team with Robert Martin
Herbstman, graduated from Moravian in 1978. He is being awarded the Robert Martin Herbstman
Award for his competitive spirit as a student-athlete and as an alumni leader. OBrien
scored over 500 points for the Greyhounds and helped the team to a four-year record of
54-42 including an 18-8 mark as a sophomore. OBrien, who has kept involved with athletics
since his departure from Moravian, is currently the Director of Athletics at Temple University.
The 1970 football team posted an overall record of 6-1-2 and won the MAC Southern Division
Championship.
