MORAVIAN CAPTURES MATTE AWARD
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Moravian College continued its hold of the Matte Award, the all-sports
trophy given annually to the winner of the Moravian-Muhlenberg rivalry. The Greyhounds
have not lost the trophy since it was first awarded in 1988.
The Greyhounds posted an 8-6 record this season against the Mules, winning in womens
soccer, womens tennis, volleyball, womens cross country, mens and womens
basketball and mens and womens track & field. Muhlenberg captured field
hockey football, mens soccer, mens cross country, mens tennis and golf.
The two schools did not compete in baseball or softball this season as both contests were
postponed then cancelled due to weather.
The Hounds have won the trophy outright 11 times: from 1989 to 1994 and the past
five years. Muhlenberg won the first award in 1987-88 and the schools tied in 1994-95.
The late Aaron Matte, a 1970 Muhlenberg graduate, donated the trophy to help promote interest
in the rivalry between the two NCAA Division III schools.
