PAUL R. MOYER NAMED MORAVIAN ATHLETICS DIRECTOR
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Moravian College has announced that Paul R. Moyer has been named the
schools full-time Athletics Director, effective July 17, 2000.
"Moravian College is very pleased to welcome Paul Moyer as our new Athletics Director," announced
Jim Mackin, Moravian College Director of Admissions and head of the search committee that
sought and selected Moyer. "Paul brings with him a strong record of success on the
collegiate level in management, coaching, leadership, and planning experience that will
allow Moravian to move forward in all areas of athletics and academics."
Moyer comes to Moravian after serving nearly six years as Director of Athletics and Recreation
at St. Marys College of Maryland.
"I'm excited about coming to Moravian because its an opportunity to put my
mark on a program with a great tradition and history of success," Moyer said. "I
was attracted to Moravian because it is an institution that has, from the beginning, incorporated
all the qualities of the traditional liberal arts program -- mind, body, and spirit --
into its mission and has made athletics and physical activity an integral part of the student
experience. This perspective truly reflects the NCAA Division III philosophical approach
-- in fact, it is true to the beginnings of intercollegiate athletics in this country.
The tradition, the commitment, and the integration of the program into the lives of the
undergrads all make Moravian a special place for students. It also positions the institution
nationally as one that can have an impact on the athletic side of higher education in general.
"I'm also pleased to work with such a high quality of faculty, staff, and students
at the College," Moyer continued. "The biggest message about Moravian's reputation
that I've received from the many individuals I've consulted during the past few months
is that its people are simply outstanding. I'm truly looking forward to working the people
and the leadership at Moravian.
"From my perspective, the program is one that is primed to take off," Moyer
said. "The coaches and athletes are committed and passionate and the institutional
leadership is supportive and willing to take the steps necessary to achieve at the highest
levels. The entire campus community is interested and eager to have not only the athletic
program but also all of the extracurricular programs play an important role in the education
of the undergraduate student population. Certainly, we have issues that will need attention
from the outset -- the facilities, staffing and additional program development will be
at the top of my agenda."
Moyer had strong praise for the current athletic department staff. "The fact that
the department has been able to move forward in a year of searching for a new director
speaks volumes about the type of people at Moravian. Much of the credit for that progress
has to go to Jim Walker, the Interim Director and Head Men's Basketball and Tennis Coach,
who managed the department operations throughout this period while coaching two sports.
We all owe him a great deal of thanks for an outstanding job under difficult circumstances.
I hope to build on the foundation he has laid," Moyer concluded.
Prior to his tenure at St. Marys, Moyer devoted four years as the Assistant Chair/Director
for the Department of Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation at the University of
Chicago. He also worked at Manhattanville College from July 1986 to August of 1990, serving
first as Assistant Director of Athletics and Recreation before moving up to Associate Director
and later Director. Moyer was also head mens soccer coach at both schools during
his tenure and the head mens soccer coach at Catholic University for two seasons.
Moyers other work experience includes three years as Athletics Facilities Director
at Catholic University, two years in the Washington Wizards (formerly Bullets) organization,
three years as President of the Capital Athletic Conference and two years as Vice-President
of the CAC. Moyer is a member of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics,
the National Association of Athletic Marketing Directors and the National Association of
Student Personnel Administrators. He has also served on the NCAA Division III and the ECAC
Mens Soccer Championship Committee.
Moyer is a native of Alexandria, Virginia and graduated from St. Marys with a Bachelor
of Arts in social science/economics in 1981. Moyer also has earned a Masters of Administrative
Science (MBA) in business administration/ management from Johns Hopkins University in 1986
and his Doctor of Education (ABD) with a major in higher education administration/finance
from Columbia University in 1994.
Moyer plans on living in Orefield with his wife Pam and their two children, Sydney (8)
and Cara (3).
