Moravian spoiled the debut of Wilkes University’s new
home stadium at the Ralston Complex, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader,
6-0 and 6-5, behind the pitching of junior Meagan
Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS), who tossed a no-hitter in the
first game. Hennessy’s no-hitter was her second of the season and the third of
her Moravian career. She allowed just two walks while improving to 9-2 on the
season. Hennessy struck out eight
batters in the win to raise her season total to 105 in just 85 innings. Hennessy received all the offense she
would need in the top of the third inning when sophomore catcher Danielle Carrione
(Bloomfield, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic HS) hit her first collegiate home run, a
two-run shot scoring senior shortstop Heather
Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS). The Greyhounds scored a single run in
the top of the fourth inning on a solo home run by junior designated player Richelle McWilliams (Riegelsville, PA/Easton HS),
her fourth round-tripper of the season. Moravian added three runs in the top of
the fifth inning on an RBI single by freshman second baseman Beth Paly
(Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) to score sophomore outfielder LeeAnna Roberts (Meshoppen,
PA/Elk Lake HS), and a two-RBI double by sophomore first baseman Lauren Homa
(Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) that scored Paly and Carrione. Moravian had just six
hits in the victory with Bortz
collecting two of them.
The Greyhounds held off a seventh-inning rally in the
second game. The victory extended Moravian's winning streak to eight straight
games. Wilkes jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first
inning. The Greyhounds would tie the game in the top of the third inning on a
solo home run by freshman third baseman Kelly
Santry (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland HS),
her first collegiate homer. Moravian would take the lead in the top of the
fifth inning on an RBI double by Paly that scored Carrione. Moravian added a single run in the top of the
sixth inning for a 3-1 lead on an RBI single by Roberts, which push freshman pinch runner Keri Traficante (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks
West HS). The Greyhounds added three runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Homa drove
in Bortz with an RBI single then Homa scored on a
two-run home run by McWilliams, her
second homer of the doubleheader and fifth of the season. McWilliams has moved into second in school history with ten career
home runs. The Colonels scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh
to pull Wilkes within a run but the Greyhounds were able to get the final out
for the victory. Moravian had 14 hits in the game with Bortz, Paly,
Santry and
sophomore outfielder Justina Black (Orefield,
PA/Parkland
HS) each collecting two hits. Hennessy
improved to 10-2 in the circle for the Greyhounds, allowing five runs, just one
earned, on nine hits and a walk. Hennessy
