Softball – 27-6 (Commonwealth Conference 9-1, MASCAC 17-1)

Last Week – Split with *Lebanon Valley College, Won 5-0 & Lost 1-0; Lost to William Paterson University, 3-0 & 5-4; *Susquehanna University doubleheader postponed to April 26th; Dickinson College doubleheader cancelled.  *Commonwealth Conference game

This Week – Tues., Apr. 26th at *Susquehanna University (DH), 3:00 p.m.; Sat., Apr. 30th vs. *Widener University (DH), 1:00 p.m.  *Commonwealth Conference game

Moravian split its first doubleheader of the season defeating Lebanon Valley College, 5-0, in the first game of a Commonwealth Conference twinbill, however, the Flying Dutchmen won the second game 1-0. The loss snaps Moravian’s 21-game winning streak and also stops the Greyhounds’ Commonwealth Conference regular season winning streak at 25 games, which dated back to April 27, 2003.  Moravian, ranked ninth in the nation in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Top 25 Poll, falls to 27-4 overall and 9-1 in Commonwealth Conference action this season. The Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead in the top of second inning of the first game on a pair of unearned runs. Junior designated player Richelle McWilliams (Riegelsville, PA/Easton HS) and sophomore outfielder Justina Black (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. McWilliams would score on a Lebanon Valley throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by freshman third baseman Kelly Santry (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland HS). Senior outfielder Krissy Cianfichi (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks East HS) would drive in Black with an RBI ground out.  Moravian would add single runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings. In the third inning, sophomore first baseman Lauren Homa (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) tripled with two outs and scored on an RBI double by McWilliams. In the fourth inning, sophomore outfielder LeeAnna Roberts (Meshoppen, PA/Elk Lake HS) led off with an infield single and scored on an RBI triple by sophomore catcher Danielle Carrione (Bloomfield, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic HS).  Moravian's final run in the seventh inning came when senior shortstop Heather Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) drew a bases loaded walk to push Santry across the plate. The Greyhounds had 11 hits in the game with Carrione, McWilliams, Black and Santry each collecting two hits.  Junior pitcher Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold HS) improved to 21-2 in the circle with her 17th straight victory and her 13th shutout of the season. Hennessy, who has tied the all-time record at Moravian with 59 career victories, allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out ten batters to raise her school record total to 530 career strikeouts and her season record to 198 this spring. Hennessy also raised her school record career shutout total to 32.

The Flying Dutchmen scored the only run of the second game in the bottom of the third inning. The Greyhounds had just one hit in the game, a one-out triple by Roberts in the top of the third inning. Moravian's only other base runner was a walk by freshman second baseman Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) in the seventh inning with one out.  Hennessy had her personal 17-game winning streak in the circle snapped, allowing a run on five hits in the loss. Hennessy, who had four strikeouts in the game, falls to 21-3 on the season.

Moravian dropped a pair of games in a non-conference doubleheader at William Paterson (NJ) University, 3-0 and 5-4, in a battle between two of the top 25 teams in the nation. The Greyhounds entered the doubleheader ranked ninth in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Top 25 Poll while the Pioneers were ranked 23rd.  William Paterson swept Moravian for the second straight season, and the Greyhounds have now lost three straight games for the first time since a four-game losing streak in April of 2001. William Paterson scored all three of its runs in the first game in the third inning off of Hennessy. Just one of the runs was earned, and Hennessy allowed just five hits while striking out four batters in the loss. Moravian could manage just four hits in the game, single by Bortz, senior outfielder Leah Holmes (Clarks Green, PA/Abington Heights HS), McWilliams and Black.

William Paterson scored three times in the bottom of the fourth inning in the second game and added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to build a 5-0 lead. Moravian started a rally in the top of the seventh inning and scored four times and had the tying run at second base when the game ended. McWilliams started the inning with a single and Black followed with another single. Sophomore Becky DeJulio (Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart HS) came on to pinch hit and singled to load the bases. Freshman outfielder Keri Traficante (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) reached on an error that allowed McWilliams and Black to score. Freshman pitcher Meagan Ritchey (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown HS) hit and RBI single to score Roberts, who had pinch run for DeJulio, before Traficante scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman catcher Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS). Moravian had eight hits in the game with Ritchey and Bortz each had two hits with Bortz adding a triple. Ritchey suffered her first loss of the season in the circle, allowing five runs, just three of them earned on five hits and four walks.

Moravian dropped a 4-3 decision at Delaware Valley College's new field in a non-conference game. The Aggies took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Greyhounds would tie the score in the top of the third inning when sophomore catcher Collin Welles (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere HS) singled and scored after a pair of Delaware Valley errors. The Aggies would retake the lead at 3-1 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. However, the Greyhounds tied the game right back up at 3-3 with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Senior third baseman Adam Goetz (Dunellen, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS) singled with one out and scored on an RBI double by senior designated hitter Steve Tomaszewski (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS). Tomaszewski would tie the game up when he scored on an RBI single by senior outfielder Chris Clancy (Kendall Park, NJ/Bishop Ahr HS).             Moravian opened a three-game Commonwealth Conference series with Susquehanna University with an 11-8 victory at Gillespie Field. Moravian jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Junior first baseman Richie Cline (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport HS) followed with an RBI single to score Goetz, who had also singled, and Cline came around to score on an RBI single by Clancy. The Crusaders scored a run in the top of the second inning to cut the Greyhounds lead to 3-1, and Susquehanna would tie the game in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs. However, Moravian responded with six runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to take the lead for good. Clancy started the scoring with a two-out RBI single to score Goetz, who had walked. After freshman outfielder Josh Baltz (Easton, PA/Easton HS) drew a walk, Welles connected on hit second home run of the season, a shot down the left field line that just stayed in fair territory, to drive in Clancy and Baltz. Freshman second baseman Brett Stout (Easton, PA/Easton HS) reached on an infield hit and moved to second on a throwing error before scoring on a triple by junior outfielder John Howarth (Livingston, NJ/Livingston HS). Another Susquehanna error would allow Howarth to score the final run of the inning. The Greyhounds would add two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to build an 11-3 lead. Cline had an RBI triple to score Tomaszewski, who had led off the inning with a walk, and Clancy had a sacrifice fly to deep right centerfield that was caught over the fence to score Cline. Susquehanna would score once in the top of the eighth inning and four more times in the ninth inning to set the final score at 11-8. The Crusaders had the tying run at the plate when the game ended. Moravian had ten hits in the game with two each by Moore, Cline and Clancy. Clancy also earned the victory for the Greyhounds, improving to 2-5 on the season.
