The Moravian College softball team will compete in the 2005 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament in a regional hosted by Salisbury (MD) University from Friday, May 13th through Sunday, May 15th.  The Greyhounds are seeded second in the regional and will play third seeded Roanoke (VA) College on Friday, May 13th at 12:00 p.m.  Moravian was the national runner-up in 2004 and is looking for a return trip to the NCAA Division III World Series.

            Top-seeded Moravian earned its fifth straight appearance in the conference tournament championship game with a pair of victories on the first day of the 2005 Commonwealth Conference Tournament being hosted by Susquehanna University. The Greyhounds defeated fourth seeded Albright College, 6-0, and then blanked second seeded Lebanon Valley College, 7-0, in a winner’s bracket game.  Moravian will play at 1:00 p.m. in the championships game on Saturday with the opportunity to earn the program’s eighth straight berth in the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament tat begins next weekend.

 

            The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning of the game versus Albright. Senior shortstop Heather Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) led off the inning with a triple to right centerfield. After an out, freshman outfielder Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) was hit by a pitch, and sophomore outfielder Justina Black (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS) drew a walk to load the bases. Junior designated player Richelle McWilliams (Riegelsville, PA/Easton HS) followed with a grand slam home run to straight away center field. The homer was McWilliams' ninth of the season, and her third of the year at Susquehanna's Sassafras Field. Moravian added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bortz had an RBI single to score freshman third baseman Kelly Santry (Hatboro, PA/Upper Merion HS), and sophomore catcher Danielle Carrione (Bloomfield, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic HS) scored on an error in the play. The Greyhounds had just seven hits in the game with Bortz collecting four of them including two singles, a double and a triple. Junior pitcher Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold HS) tossed her 15th shutout of the season, allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out ten batters. Hennessy is now 25-4 on the season with a school record 244 strikeouts. She raised her school career records to 63 wins, 34 shutouts and 576 strikeouts. The seven innings gave Hennessy the school career record in innings pitched with 542.

 

            Moravian jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the game against Lebanon Valley. Bortz drew a walk to lead off the inning, and she scored on a two-out RBI double by Black. The Greyhounds added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning for a 3-0 lead. Bortz led off the inning with single and scored on another RBI double by Black. Black would cross the plate on a Lebanon Valley error off a ball hit by McWilliams. Moravian scored three more times in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead. With one out, Bortz singled and moved to second on the third sacrifice bunt of the game by senior second baseman Leah Holmes (Clarks Green, PA/Abington Heights HS). Paly followed with an RBI double to score Bortz. After a Lebanon Valley pitching change, Black connected on her third RBI double of the game to score Paly. Black's three doubles tie a Moravian single game record. McWilliams followed with a single before sophomore first baseman Lauren Homa (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) connected on an RBI single to score Black. The Greyhounds added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 7-0 lead. Paly hit a two-out RBI single to push senior outfielder Krissy Cianfichi (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks East HS) across the plate. Moravian had 11 hits in the game with three hits by Black and two each by Bortz, Paly & McWilliams. Hennessy tossed her 16th shutout of the season and second of the day, allowing just two hits while striking out six batters. Hennessy is now 26-4 on the season with a school record 250 strikeouts. She raised her school career records to 64 wins, 35 shutouts, 582 strikeouts and 549 innings pitched.

 

            Moravian earned its fifth straight Commonwealth Conference Tournament Championship with a 6-0 victory over fourth seeded Albright College at Susquehanna University's Sassafras Field. The Greyhounds won their sixth consecutive Commonwealth Conference Championship and have earned their eighth straight berth in the 2005 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament that begins this weekend. The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore Becky DeJulio (Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart HS) led off with a pinch hit single to right field, and she made it all the way to third base on an error in the outfield. Sophomore outfielder LeeAnna Roberts (Meshoppen, PA/Elk Lake HS) reentered the game to run and she scored on a sacrifice fly by Bortz. Moravian added five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Paly led off with a single and Black followed with a walk. After a wild pitch, McWilliams was intentionally walked to lead the bases. After a fly out, Santry drew a walk to push Paly across the plate. Freshman Keri Traficante (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) drew another walk to push senior pinch runner Stephanie Eddinger (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) across the plate. Cianfichi, who ran for McWilliams, scored on a wild pitch before Bortz hit a two-RBI single to score Santry and Traficante. Moravian had just five hits in the game with two by Paly. Hennessy tossed her 17th shutout of the season and third of the tournament, allowing just four hits while striking out six batters. Hennessy was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after allowing just ten hits and a walk while striking out 22 batters in 21 shutout innings of work. Hennessy is now 27-4 on the season with a school record 256 strikeouts. She raised her school career records to 65 wins, 36 shutouts, 588 strikeouts and 556 innings pitched.

                Moravian had four individuals compete on the first day of the 2005 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships hosted by Widener University. Senior Chelsea Mullins (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS) won her first MAC Outdoor individual title with a first place finish in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 37:47.91. Mullins win in the 10,000-meters gave the Greyhounds a one-point lead over Messiah College, 10-9, after the first day of competition. Freshman Katie Pulizzano (Allentown, PA/William Allen HS) placed ninth in the 10,000-meter race at 42:00.03 while senior Kim Bushner (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) was tenth in a time of 42:02.58. Freshman Theresa Zataveski (Quakertown, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy HS) competed in the first day of the heptathlon as well. Zataveski placed seventh in the 200-meter dash in 29.67 seconds to earn 505 points, sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.37 seconds for 555 points, sixth in the high jump at 1.27 meters (four feet, two inches) for 379 points and tied for eighth in the shot put with a toss of 6.79 meters (22 feet, 3 1/2 inches) for 322 points.

 

                Senior Kirsten Rotzell (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) captured first place in the triple jump to lead the Greyhounds on the second day of the 2005 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. Rotzell, who won the event for the fourth straight season, had a winning distance of 11.46 meters (37 feet, 7 1/4 inches), which provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Division III National Championships. Sophomore Kathleen McCarron (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) placed third in the triple jump at 10.91 meters (35 feet, 9 1/2 inches).

 

                In other field events, sophomore Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS) placed second in the shot put with a toss of 11.85 meters (38 feet, 10 1/2 inches) while junior Lynsey Boggess (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy HS) placed second in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.62 meters (five feet, four inches), which tied the Moravian record. Applegate was fifth in the discus throw with a toss of 34.80 meters (114 feet, two inches) while senior Julie Anderson (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) placed sixth at 32.62 meters (107 feet). Junior Rebecca Moore (Easton, PA/Easton HS) tied for fifth in the pole vault with a height of 2.89 meters (nine feet, six inches) while freshman Jessica Cianci (Sussex, NJ/Vernon Township HS) was ninth in the event at 2.74 meters (nine feet).

 

                Zataveski finished sixth in the heptathlon with a point total of 2,868. On the second day of the event, Zataveski was seventh in the long jump at 4.21 meters (13 feet, 9 3/4 inches) for 357 points, eighth in the javelin with a toss of 16.99 meters (55 feet, nine inches) for 233 points and sixth in the 800-meter run at 2:45.00 for 517 points. Also in scoring events on the second day of the meet, junior Lauren Bahnatka (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS) placed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time 11:47.17 while junior Alexis Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees HS) was fourth in 12:19.01.

 

                The Greyhounds had a number of competitors qualify for the finals of their events during preliminary races. In the 100-meter dash, Rotzell placed second in 12.89 seconds, sophomore Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) was fourth in 12.98 seconds and McCarron was seventh at 13.08 seconds with all three runners earning a spot in the finals. In the 200-meter dash, Recker was fourth in 26.30 seconds to reach the finals while sophomore Suzanne Tamlyn (Wappingers Falls, NY/Wallkill HS) took sixth in 26.53 seconds and Rotzell finished eighth in 26.70 seconds to qualify. McCarron was 12th in the 200-meter dash in 27.43 seconds but failed to move on. Tamlyn qualified in the 400-meter dash in 1:00.70 while senior Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS) was first in the qualifying for the 800 meters in 2:16.95. Senior Kellie Smith (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) also qualified in the 800 meters with a time of 2:24.01, which placed her eighth in qualifying. Senior Margaret Benny (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS) was second in the 100-meter hurdles in a school record tying time of 15.47 seconds to move on as did Zataveski, who was seventh in 17.17 seconds. Sophomore Amy Reehill (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS) took fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.94 to earn a spot in the finals while Benny finished fifth in 1:08.23 to earn a spot as well.

 

                Moravian captured its 13th straight Middle Atlantic Conference Championship with a first place team finished at the 2005 MAC Championship meet. The Greyhounds posted a team score of 191, 60.5 points ahead of runner up Susquehanna University. Head coach Doug Pollard was named the MAC Women's Coach of the Year following the meet.

 

                Moravian had two individuals win their events, and a relay team also captured first place while the Greyhounds set three school records. Recker broke her own school mark in the 100-meter dash with a first place finish in a time of 12.33 seconds, which also provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Division III National Championships. Rotzell won her second championship of the meet, taking first in the long jump with a leap of 5.21 meters (17 feet, 1 1/4 inches). Recker and Rotzell joined up with McCarron and Tamlyn to set the school record and win the 4x100-meter relay in 48.50 seconds. The time also provisionally qualifies the quartet for the NCAA Championships.

 

                Recker also finished second in the 200-meter dash in 26.10 seconds while Rotzell was fourth in the 100 meters in 12.73 seconds and fifth in the 200 meters at 26.46 seconds. McCarron was seventh in the 100-meter dash at 13.06 seconds, and she placed second to Rotzell in the long jump at 5.15 meters (16 feet, 10 3/4 inches). Tamlyn placed fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.39, and she was sixth in the 200 meters in 26.57 seconds. Benny set a Moravian record while placing second in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.24 seconds, and she was third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.47. Zataveski finished eighth in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.18 seconds. Reehil took sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:08.07 and the duo joined Tamlyn and McGarvie to place fifth in the 4x400-meter relay in a time of 4:08.69.

 

                McGarvie ran in a pair of races on the final day of the MAC meet, placing second in the 800-meter run in 2:16.56 and third in the 1,500-meters at 4:48.22. Smith also competed in the same events, finishing eighth in the 800 meters in 2:26.49 and seventh in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:59.97. Freshman Krystyn Fenon (Palmerton, PA/Lehighton HS) took ninth in the 1,500 meters in 5:09.65. In the 5,000-meter run, Mullins finished second for the Greyhounds in a time of 18:04.70.

 

                In other field events, Anderson placed second in the hammer throw with a toss of 38.52 meters (126 feet, four inches) while Applegate was sixth in the javelin throw with a distance of 35.05 meters (115 feet).

                Moravian had three individuals compete on the first day of the 2005 Middle Atlantic Conference Championship hosted by Widener University with junior William Shimer (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) placing 15th in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 36:09.13. Senior Dan Corey (Fair Lawn, NJ/Glen Rock HS) and freshman Erik Nielsen (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown HS) also competed in the first day of the decathlon competition. Corey was fourth in the 100-meter dash in 12.25 seconds to earn 603 points, and he was seventh in the 400-meter dash in 54.35 seconds for 625 points, tied for second in the high jump at 1.82 meters (five feet, 11 1/2 inches) for 644 points, fourth in the long jump at 5.89 meters (19 feet, four inches) for 563 points and second in the shot put with a toss of 11.22 meters (36 feet, 9 3/4 inches) for 559 points. Nielsen was sixth in the 100-meter dash in 12.35 seconds to earn 584 points, and he was sixth in the 400-meter dash in 53.31 seconds for 668 points, fourth in the high jump at 1.73 meters (five feet, eight inches) for 569points, eighth in the long jump at 5.33 meters (17 feet, six inches) for 447 points and third in the shot put with a toss of 10.94 meters (35 feet, 10 3/4 inches) for 542 points.

 

                The Greyhounds were in fourth place of ten schools after the second day of competition at the 2005 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. Senior Michael El Kazzaz (Easton, PA/Easton HS) had Moravian's top individual finish of the day, tying for second in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.41 meters (14 feet, six inches). Freshman Nathaniel Dutile (Plymouth, ME/Nokomis HS) placed third in the shot put at 13.93 meters (45 feet, 8 1/2 inches), and he was sixth in the discus throw with a toss of 40.51 meters (132 feet, 11 inches). Sophomore Steve Kondorossy (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery HS) finished seventh in the discus wit a toss of 40.32 meters (132 feet, three inches).

 

                At the end of the second day of competition in the decathlon, Corey placed third with 5,420 points while Nielsen finished fourth at 5,338 points. Corey took second in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.40 seconds to earn 688 points, and he was sixth in the discus throw at 25.85 meters (84 feet, ten inches) for 383 points, second in the pole vault with a height of 3.40 meters (11 feet, 1 3/4 inches) for 457 points, eighth in the javelin throw with a toss of 33.88 meters (111 feet, two inches) for 354 points and seventh in the 1,500-meter run in 5:02.67 for 544 points. Nielsen finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.28 seconds for 595 points, and he was fifth in the discus at 26.95 meters (88 feet, five inches) for 405 points), tied for third in the pole vault at a height of 3.10 meters (ten feet, two inches), first in the javelin throw with a toss of 47.59 meters (156 feet, two inches) for 553 points and third in the 1,500 meters in 4:54.16 to earn 594 points.

 

                Moravian had several competitors qualify for the finals of their events during preliminary heats on the second day of the championship meet. In the 100-meter dash, freshman Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) was first in 11.27 seconds to move onto the finals while senior Scott Silvoy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) placed sixth in 11.33 seconds, also earning a spot in the finals. Freshman James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) was tenth in qualifying at 11.54 seconds but failed to move on. Brown and Silvoy both qualified in the 200-meter dash as well with Brown placing fourth in 22.40 seconds and Silvoy taking fifth in a time of 22.42 seconds. Sophomore Josh Kline (Reading, PA/Exeter HS) posted a time of 23.03 seconds in the 200 meters to finish tenth, but he did not earn a spot in the finals. Kline would earn a spot in the finals of the 400-meter dash in 51.28 seconds while Brown was first in the 110-meter high hurdles qualifying race in a time of 15.13 seconds to move into the finals. Sophomore Matt Bailey (Reading, PA/Reading HS) was seventh in both the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.07 seconds and the 400-meter hurdles in 56.98 seconds to reach the finals in both events.

 

                Moravian finished fourth of ten schools at the 2005 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. The Greyhounds had a team score of 104 points while Susquehanna University won the meet with 164 points, just one point ahead of the host Pioneers and four points ahead of third place Elizabethtown College. Brown was named the Rookie of the Year in the meet after winning the 110-meter high hurdles and the long jump on the third and final day of competition. Brown ran an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 14.87 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, and he won the long jump with a leap of 6.90 meters (22 feet, 7 3/4 inches). Brown was also fifth in the 100-meter dash in 11.28 seconds and third in the 200-meter dash in 21.90 seconds. Brown joined Silvoy, Kline and Bell in a first place finish in the 4x100-meter relay in a time of 42.21 seconds.

 

                Silvoy placed second in the 100-meter dash in 11.08 seconds and fourth in the 200-meter dash at 22.08 seasons while Kline finished fifth in the 400-meter dash in 51.09 seconds. Bailey placed fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.19 seconds, and he was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 54.83 seconds. Junior Greg Rarick (Drums, PA/Hazleton HS) took 12th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:11.28.

 

                In other field events on the final day of competition, sophomore Michael Ossont (Archbald, PA/Lackawanna HS) finished second in the javelin throw with a toss of 53.17 meters (174 feet, five inches). Moravian also had four competitors in the hammer throw with sophomore Patrick Callahan (Matawan, NJ/Matawan HS) placing tenth with a toss of 37.58 meters (123 feet, three inches), freshman Robert Bernadyn (Mahanoy City, PA/Mahanoy Area HS) taking 11th at 35.40 meters (116 feet, two inches), Kondorossy finishing 12th with a distance of 35.18 meters (115 feet, five inches) and senior Shawn Nelson (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) taking 13th place with a toss of 35.13 meters (115 feet, three inches).
