Season Complete
Moravian split a pair of games on the first day of
the 2005 NCAA Regional being hosted by Salisbury (MD) University. The Greyhounds, who are seeded second in the
tournament, lost to third seeded Roanoke (VA) College,
2-1 in nine innings, before defeating fifth seeded Mary Baldwin (VA) College,
7-0, in an elimination game. In the
first game of the day for the Greyhounds, Roanoke
took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The Greyhounds tied the game in the bottom of
the sixth inning. Senior shortstop Heather
Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) drew a walk to lead off the inning. She
moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior outfielder Leah Holmes (Clarks Green, PA/Abington Heights HS) with an error to
allow to both Holmes and Bortz to be safe, and a sacrifice bunt
by freshman second baseman Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) laid down another
sacrifice bunt to move Bortz to
third. Sophomore outfielder Justina Black (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS) had an infield single to score Bortz. Moravian had a chance to win the
game in the bottom of the seventh inning but sophomore catcher Danielle Carrione
(Bloomfield, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic HS)
was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the inning. The Maroons scored
the winning run in the top of the ninth inning.
Moravian was limited to just five hits in the game with three by Bortz. During the game, Bortz had two assists in the field to
become just the second player in school history with 300 career assists. Carrione had
nine putouts to give her a school record 285 this season. Junior pitcher Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold
Township HS) suffered just her fifth loss of the season in the circle,
allowing two earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out nine
batters. Hennessy raised her single
season records for innings pitched to 230 and for strikeouts to 265. She also
raised her school record career total to 565 innings pitched and 597
strikeouts.
Moravian jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the
first inning against Mary Baldwin. Bortz
led off with a single before stealing second base. Freshman outfielder Keri Traficante
(Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) reached on an error, and an error on a
ball hit by Paly
allowed Bortz to score. Black followed with an RBI single to
score Traficante
before a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Richelle McWilliams (Riegelsville, PA/Easton HS) pushed Paly across the plate. Sophomore
outfielder Lauren Homa
(Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) connected on an RBI double to score Black, and Homa would score on an RBI
single by freshman third baseman Kelly Santry (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland HS).
The Greyhounds added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Bortz led off with a double and scored
on an RBI double by Paly.
McWilliams added another RBI
sacrifice fly to score Paly.
The Greyhounds had 13 hits in the game with Black and Homa
each collecting three hits and Bortz
adding two hits to raise her school record career total to 250. Freshman
pitcher Megan Ritchey (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown
HS) improved to 7-1 in the circle with the victory. Ritchey allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out
five batters in her first collegiate postseason appearance.
The Greyhounds won a pair of games to advance to the
championship round of the NCAA Division III Regionals
for the third straight year. Moravian
defeated fourth seeded Ferrum (VA) College, 6-3, in
the first elimination game before knocking Roanoke out of the tournament, 5-0. The
Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning versus Ferrum on a solo home run to left field by Santry. The
homer was Santry's
third of the season. Ferrum tied the contest at 1-1
in the bottom of the third inning. The Panthers would take a 2-1 lead in the
bottom of the fifth inning. The Greyhounds scored five times in the top of the
sixth inning to take a 6-2 lead. Homa drew a one out walk. After another out, Carrione hit a single and Hennessy followed with an RBI single to score Homa. Bortz drew another walk to load the bases before an error on a ball
hit by Holmes allowed Carrione to
score. Paly followed with a single to left field
that drove in Hennessy, Bortz and Holmes. Ferrum would score a run in the
bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 6-3. Moravian had eight hits in
the game with two each by Paly and Hennessy.
In the circle, Hennessy improved to
28-5 on the season, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks while
striking out seven batters. The seven strikeouts pushed her career total over
the 600 mark to 604.
Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Roanoke in the bottom of
the first inning. Bortz and Holmes led off with back-to-back
singles, and Black drew a one out
walk to load the bases. McWilliams grounded
into an RBI fielder's choice to score Bortz,
and an error on a ground ball hit by Homa allowed Holmes
to score. The Greyhounds added another run in the bottom of the third inning to
extend their lead to 3-0. Black
reached on a Roanoke
error with two outs, and McWilliams
followed with a double off the fence in left centerfield, which was just inches
from clearing the eight-foot fence, to score Black. The Greyhounds scored twice more in the bottom of the fifth
inning for a 5-0 lead. Black singled
with two outs before McWilliams
connected on a two-run home run down the left field line. The homer was McWilliams' tenth of the season, tying
the single season school record set by Janelle Brey
in 2002. Moravian finished the game with seven hits including two by McWilliams. Hennessy tossed her 18th shutout of the season, scattering five
hits to go with three strikeouts. Hennessy
is now 29-5 on the year with school records of 29 wins, 18 shutouts, 244
innings pitched and 275 strikeouts.
Moravian was knocked out of the 2005 NCAA Division
III Regionals with a 6-2 loss to top seeded and host
Salisbury (MD) University in the championship game. Moravian closes out the
2005 season with an overall record of 37-8.
The Sea Gulls took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The
Greyhounds tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning. Santry led off
with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Bortz singled to center field to score Santry. Salisbury retook the lead
in the bottom of the third inning with three runs for a 4-1 lead. Moravian
scored another run in the top of the fourth inning but left the bases loaded. Paly doubled to lead off the inning and
scored on an RBI single by Santry to cut Salisbury's
lead to 4-2. Salisbury
would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Greyhounds had five
hits in the game with two by Santry. Hennessy suffered
the loss to end the season at 29-6 in the circle. She allowed six runs, just
three of them earned, on eight hits and two walks while striking out two
batters. Hennessy finished the year
with a school record 29 wins, 250 innings pitched and 277 strikeouts. Moravian
had seven players named to the All-Tournament Team with Bortz at shortstop, Paly at second base, Hennessy
at pitcher, McWilliams at designated
player, Black at outfielder and Santry and Homa as at-large selections.

Moravian currently has three student-athletes and one
relay team provisionally qualified for the 2005 NCAA Division III National Championships
at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa on May 26th, 27th
and 28th. Senior Kirsten Rotzell (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) is currently ranked 21st in the
triple jump while senior Chelsea Mullins
(Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS) is 32nd in the 10,000 meters and
sophomore Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua
HS) is 27th in the 100-meter dash. The Greyhounds 4x100-meter relay squad of Rotzell, Recker and sophomores Kathleen McCarron
(Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) and Suzanne
Tamlyn (Wappingers Falls, NY/Wallkill
HS) is currently 30th in the nation. The final field will be announced on Monday,
May 23rd.

College in Waverly, Iowa on May 26th, 27th and 28th. Freshman Ozzie
Brown (Plymouth
Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) is 22nd
in the nation in the 110-meter high hurdles.
The final field will be announced on Monday, May 23rd.

HS) and senior outfielder Chris
Clancy (Kendall Park, NJ/Bishop Ahr HS) of the
Moravian College baseball team have been named to the 2005 Commonwealth
All-Conference Baseball Second Team announced Tuesday by the Middle Atlantic
States Collegiate Athletic Corporation.
Freshman pitcher Trevor Lawrence
(Lansford, PA/Marian Catholic HS) was named the Commonwealth Conference
Co-Rookie of the Year as well. Moravian
completed the 2005 season with an overall record of 10-26, and the Greyhounds
were 5-16 in Commonwealth Conference action.
Moore
led the Greyhounds with a school single season record of 49 hits and a .368
average to go with 15 RBIs, 32 runs, 12 doubles, three triples, a home run, 13
walks and seven stolen bases. Moore was the only
Greyhound player to start and play in all 36 games this season, and he also
pitched two innings with one strikeout and one walk. Clancy had 26 hits
and a .351 average during his final season to go along with 11 runs, 12 RBIs,
three doubles, six walks and a pair of stolen bases. Clancy also posted a 2-5 record on the
mound, pitching 40 2/3 innings with 24 strikeouts and 16 walks. Lawrence,
who shared the Rookie of the Year award with Jason Enoch of Juniata College,
was the Greyhounds’ top pitcher this spring with a 6-2 record, a 2.80 ERA, six
complete games, a shutout, 31 strikeouts, and 12 walks in 64 1/3 innings. Lawrence
allowed 71 hits and was touched for 32 runs, just 20 of them earned in his
debut season.

MORAVIAN HONORS SENIOR STUDENT-ATHLETES;
BORTZ & ZALESKI NAMED SENIOR
ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
Moravian College honored its 2005 senior student-athletes at
its annual Senior Athletics Awards Banquet on Wednesday May 12th at
the Gateway Conference Center. Softball standout Heather Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) was named the Outstanding Senior
Female Athlete while basketball player Brandon
Zaleski (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS) was honored with the
Outstanding Senior Male Athlete award.
The Blue & Grey Scholar Athlete awards were presented to women’s
tennis and track & field competitor Julie
Anderson (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) and track & field athlete Scott Silvoy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS). The H.T.D. Gillespie Award for outstanding
service to Moravian’s athletics program was presented to George Hollendersky ’59.
Bortz, a
shortstop, has helped the Greyhounds to a 34-6 record this season and the team’s
eighth straight trip to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament
that begins on Friday in Salisbury,
Maryland. Bortz
was named to Commonwealth All-Conference First Team and the Commonwealth
Conference Player of the Year this spring.
Bortz, who was the Commonwealth Rookie of the Year in 2002 and
the Commonwealth Player of the Year in 2003 and 2004, earned a spot on the
First Team for the fourth straight year, and she leads Moravian in hitting this
spring with a .419 batting average. Bortz has a team high 54 hits, 25 runs,
five doubles, five triples and 20 RBIs. Bortz has also added two sacrifice
flies, five stolen bases and 12 walks. Bortz,
a two-time All-American including the First Team in 2004, has become the
first player in school history to reach 200 career hits and has 245 in her
career. She also leads the team with 70
assists in the field.
Zaleski, a
forward, helped Moravian to a 7-18 record this past winter. He led team with a scoring average of 17.2
points per game, and Zaleski was
named to the Commonwealth All-Conference First Team for the third straight
year. He was second in rebounding with
7.1 boards, and Zaleski also
contributed 44 assists, 30 steals, 20 blocked shots and ten
three-pointers. Zaleski completed his career as the all-time leading scorer in
Moravian history with 1,891 points. He
also completed his career as the all-time leader in field goals made with 703
field goals, second in free throws made with 456, second in games started with
103, fourth in rebounds with 723 and fourth in scoring average at 18.5 points
per game. Zaleski was a three-time Commonwealth All-Conference First Team
selection, and he was the Commonwealth Rookie of the Year in 2002 & the
Commonwealth Player of the Year in 2003.
Anderson helped
the women’s tennis team to a 13-3 fall season record and a berth in the
conference championship match for the 11th consecutive year. She had a singles mark of 3-0 and a doubles slate of 7-0 last fall. In track & field, Anderson
is the school record holder in the hammer throw, and she finished second in the
hammer at last weekend’s 2005 Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championships
as the Greyhounds won their 13th straight title. Anderson won
the MAC Indoor Championship in the 25-pound weight throw in 2003 & 2004,
and she has helped the indoor team win ten consecutive MAC title. Anderson is a nine-time member of the Middle
Atlantic Conference States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Academic Honor Roll,
and she has been named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar
Athlete. Anderson, who has received a 2005 Fulbright Scholarship to teach in
Germany,
next year, has a 3.98 grade point average, and she is majoring in English and
German.
Silvoy,
a sprinter, was named the Most Valuable Player of the track team this
spring. He is part of the school record
holding relay teams in the 4x100-meter relay outdoors and the 4x200-meter relay
indoors. Silvoy was second in the
100-meter dash at last weekend’s MAC Outdoor Championship and fourth in the
200-meter dash, and he was the Rookie of the Year at the 2002 MAC Indoor
Championships. Silvoy has been on the MASCAC
Academic Honor Roll six times and a member of the Student-Athlete Mentor
program at Moravian. Silvoy has a 3.32 grade point
average, and he is majoring in sociology.
Hollendersky
has made many contributions to the Moravian Athletic Department since his
graduation including hosting the softball team at his home in Ocean Pines, Maryland the last few years while the team travels to Salisbury, Maryland
for a tournament. Hollendersky was inducted into
the Moravian College Hall of Fame on March 24, 1984, and he was a four-year letterwinner in both football and baseball for
Moravian. Hollendersky played for
legendary coaches Rocco Calvo, Gus Garcsar and Gil
Gillespie at Moravian and was voted the Most Valuable Player of both sports
during his senior year. Hollendersky was
a First Team NCAA District 2 All-Star catcher for the Greyhounds, and he worked
for the United States Secret Service following graduation. Hollendersky, who has helped further the careers many
Moravian criminal justice majors over the last 30 years, was part of Secret
Service from the Dwight Eisenhower administration through Ronald Regan’s second
term as well as serving on the security force for one of Pope John Paul II
visits to the United States.
