Football – 5-0 (MAC 5-0)

Last Week – Defeated *Wilkes University, 34-27.  *MAC game

This Week – Sat., Oct. 16th vs.*FDU-Florham, 1:00 p.m.  *MAC game

Sophomore tailback Chris Jacoubs (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven HS) ran for 164 yards and two touchdowns on 49 carries and junior quarterback Jerry Venturino (Hopatcong, NJ/Hopatcong HS) completed eight of 11 passes for 165 yards and two scores to lead the Moravian College football team to a 34-27 victory over Wilkes University in Middle Atlantic Conference action.  The Greyhounds improve to 5-0 overall and in the MAC for the first time since 1940.

Moravian opened the scoring by taking the opening kickoff 75 yards on nine plays to take a 7-0 lead with 10:32 remaining in the first quarter.  Venturino capped the drive with a 32-yard scoring strike to sophomore wide receiver Shawn Martell (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) on a third and six play.  Senior kicker Ken Macaulay (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) added the extra-point.  Venturino’s pass was the only pass play on the drive when featured Jacoubs gaining 27 yards on six carries.  Martell caught two passes for 52 yards.  On Wilkes first possession, Moravian junior linebacker Chad DeFelice (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl HS) intercepted a pass after the ball was tipped by Greyhound junior defensive back Tyler Chomik (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS).

The Greyhounds took over on their own 26-yard line.  On the fifth play of the drive, Jacoubs had a 20-yard carry on a draw play to become the eighth player in Moravian history to go over 1,800 career yards.  Jacoubs, who has run for more than 100 yards in seven of his 11 career starts, finished the game with 1,911 yards in just 15 games at Moravian.  Venturino would finish off the 74-yard, eight-play drive with his second pass of the game, a 24-yard touchdown strike to sophomore wide receiver Ben Hawkins (Belmar, NJ/Manasquan HS) on a third-and-one play.  Macaulay’s extra-point was wide right giving Moravian a 13-0 lead with 4:20 remaining in the first quarter.  Hawkins had three receptions for 79 yards in the victory.

The Colonels scored to cut the Moravian lead to 13-7 with 56 seconds remaining in the first quarter.  Moravian was forced to punt its first possession of the second quarter with Wilkes taking over on its own 12-yard line.  However, Chomik forced a fumble and fell on the ball at the Wilkes 26-yard line.  On a third-and-goal play from the one-yard line, Jacoubs jumped over the pile for his eighth rushing touchdown of the season to finish off a six-play, 26-yard drive.  However, Jacoubs was stopped on the two-point conversion attempt giving the Greyhounds a 19-7 lead with 11:32 in the second quarter.  Wilkes took a short kickoff and returned it to its own 40-yard line to start the ensuing drive.  The Colonels would drive to the Moravian 31-yard line but the Colonels were stopped on a fourth-and-two play by Greyhounds’ sophomore linebacker Cliff Garr (Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS) to give Moravian possession of the ball.  However, the Greyhounds were forced to put after three plays.

The Colonels took over at their own 22-yard line after a 49-yard punt by Moravian senior John McLain (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere HS).  Wilkes drove to Moravian’s 40-yard line, however, a pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage by Moravian senior defensive end Richie Cline (Keyport, NJ/Union Beach HS) and was intercepted at the Moravian 26-yard line by senior linebacker Bill Carasia (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven HS) with 5:15 left in the second quarter.  On the following drive, the Greyhounds were faced with a third-and-nine play at their own 47-yard line when Venturino hit Hawkins with a 46-yard pass to get inside the Wilkes ten-yard line.  On second and goal from the four-yard line, Jacoubs reached the one-yard line before fumbling into the end zone.  Moravian junior wide receiver Russ Demko (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) fell on the ball for a touchdown to cap a six-play, 74-yard drive.  Macaulay converted the extra-point for a 26-7 Moravian lead with 2:03 remaining in the first half.

Wilkes scored its second touchdown of the game with 9:53 remaining in the third quarter but its two-point conversion run failed giving Moravian a 26-13 lead in the third quarter.  The Colonels cut Moravian’s lead to 26-20 with another touchdown with 3:25 remaining in the third quarter.

Chomik set-up Moravian’s next drive with a 17-yard kickoff return to the Moravian 22-yard line.  On a fourth and three from the Wilkes 29-yard line, Jacoubs picked up seven yards for a first down.  Venturino would keep the ball on another fourth down play, picking up two yards to give the Greyhounds a first-and-ten at the Wilkes 12-yard line.  Jacoubs capped off a 20-play, 78-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run with 9:00 remaining in the fourth quarter.  The Greyhound drive took 9:25 off the clock.  After an illegal procedure call, Venturino ran a quarterback draw out of a shot gun formation for the two-point conversion giving the Greyhounds a 34-20 lead.

The Colonels finished the scoring with a touchdown with 2:31 remaining in the game to pull within 34-27.  Wilkes would get the ball again but the Colonels final pass as time expired only reached the Moravian 18-yard line.

Both offenses were balanced in the game with each team collecting 22 first downs.  The Greyhounds had 398 yards on 76 plays while controlling the ball for 37:32 in the game.  The Greyhounds gained 233 yards on the ground behind Jacoubs’ 164-yard effort.  Sophomore fullback Joe Costanzo (Barnstead, NJ/Bow HS & Tilton School) had 35 yards on five carries while junior fullback Kevin Lukich (Ogdensburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley HS) added 21 yards on three attempts for the Greyhounds before leaving the game with an injury.  Costanzo also caught one pass for 19 yards while senior wide out Jed Warsager (Andover, NJ/Newton HS) had one reception for 16 yards.

The Moravian defense was led by Carasia, who had seven tackles to go along with his interception.  Junior defensive back Gerald Weiss (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) added six tackles while Chomik had five tackles and a pass break-up to go with his forced fumble and fumble recovery.  Chomik also had three kickoff returns for 47 yards and two punt returns for 12 yards.
