Greyhound Weekly Update, January 16, 2006 (-2222-)

 

Women’s Basketball – 13-1 (Commonwealth Conference 4-0, MASCAC 7-1)

            Moravian ran its winning streak to five straight games and improved to 3-0 in Commonwealth Conference action with a 70-58 victory at Lebanon Valley College. The Flying Dutchmen had an early 5-4 lead before a 7-0 Greyhound run put Moravian ahead for good. The Greyhounds, who are ranked 15th in the nation in the USA Today/ESPN Division III Coaches' Poll and 17th in the D3hoop.com Top 25 poll, would lead by as many as 13 points in the first half with a 38-25 halftime edge, and Moravian would stretch the lead to 20 points early in the second half to see Lebanon Valley close within eight points twice. The Greyhounds struggled shooting all game, making just 29 of 81 field goal attempts (35.8 percent) and ten of 23 free throw attempts (43.5 percent). Moravian did have a 54-41 advantage on the boards thanks to 26 offensive rebounds, and the Greyhound committed just 19 turnovers while forcing Lebanon Valley into 31 miscues. The Greyhounds had two players in double figures led by junior forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS), who had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Applegate, who entered the game as the nation's leader in field goal percentage, was just nine of 22 from the floor and three of six at the foul line; however, Applegate did add four assists and four steals, both career highs, in the victory. Senior forward Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) tossed in 14 points and added eight rebounds and five steals while junior forward Jenny Hackleman (Solvang, CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS) grabbed a team high 13 rebounds to go with eight points, three assists and a pair of blocked shots. Junior guard Katie Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) scored nine points and had five rebounds and five steals for the Greyhounds while senior forward Lindsay Brase (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame HS) had eight points off the bench. Junior guard Rachel Berlin (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) added four points as a reserve while sophomore guard Sara Steinman (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton HS) made four steals in the win.

 

            The Greyhounds ran their winning streak to six consecutive games and improved to 4-0 in Commonwealth Conference action with a 64-60 overtime victory versus Susquehanna University in Johnston Hall. The Crusaders had an early 5-4 lead before nationally-ranked Moravian went ahead at 6-5. Susquehanna responded with a 7-0 run to take a 12-6 lead, the Crusaders largest of the game. The Greyhounds came right back with a 13-0 run to take their largest lead of the contest at 19-12 with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half. Susquehanna finished the half with a 13-5 run for a 25-24 halftime edge. Both teams struggled shooting in the first half with Moravian making nine of 28 field goal attempts (32.1 percent) and four of six free throws while Susquehanna was just nine of 33 (27.3 percent) in the first half and three of five at the foul line. The Greyhounds built a quick lead in the second half, up 32-27, but Susquehanna responded to tie the game at 36-36. Moravian would eventually build a six-point lead, up 48-42 with 8:07 to play. However, the Greyhounds couldn't put the contest away as the Crusaders tied it at 52-52 with 2:32 remaining in regulation. Susquehanna hit a jumper with ten seconds left to knot the score at 55-55, and Moravian missed a shot at the buzzer to force overtime. The Greyhounds shooting woes got worse from the floor in the second half, making just seven of 25 field goal attempts (28 percent); however, Moravian's free throw shooting kept them in the game, going 17 of 19 (89.5 percent) at the charity stripe. Susquehanna was ten of 24 from the floor (41.7 percent) and eight of nine at the foul line in the second half. In the extra five minutes, Susquehanna would not attempt a field goal but was five of eight at the foul line. On the other hand, Moravian was two of five from the floor and five of nine at the foul line in the overtime period. The score was tied at 60-60 in the final seconds before a three-point play by Brase gave the Greyhounds a 63-60 lead with just 3.1 seconds left on the clock. Moravian finished the game with a 43-41 edge in rebounds and committed just 18 turnovers while forcing Susquehanna into 22 miscues. Brase was one for four Moravian players in double figures in the game with 11 points to go with three rebounds. Applegate led the Greyhounds with 16 points and eight rebounds while Seaman, who was honored before the game for scoring her 1,000th point and Rizman each tossed in 15 points. Seaman added six rebounds while Rizman had four rebounds and three steals for Moravian in the victory. Steinman contributed four points and two assists in the win while Hackleman was limited to one point while grabbing seven rebounds and blocking three blocked shots for Moravian. Hackleman's first rebound of the game was the 500th of her career, making her the 13th player in school history to grab at least 500 career rebounds.

            The Greyhounds dropped their first Commonwealth Conference game of 2006 and fell to 0-3 in conference action this season with an 86-71 loss at Lebanon Valley College. The Flying Dutchmen scored the first seven points of the game and led throughout, including a 20-point lead with 13 minutes remaining in the game. Moravian struggled from the field in the first half, making just 11 of 28 field goal attempts (39.3 percent). The Greyhounds, who were behind 36-27 at the intermission, improved in the second half, connecting on 16 of 30 field goal attempts (53.3 percent); however, Lebanon Valley made 72 percent of its field goal attempts in the second half to maintain the lead. The Flying Dutchmen also had a 30-26 advantage on the boards but committed 21 turnovers to Moravian's 18 turnovers. The Greyhounds had just six players score in the game with 54 of the team's 71 points coming from three players. Senior forward Zach Zsilavecz (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) netted a career high 28 points, and he added a team high five rebounds while sophomore forward Chris Earley (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) tied his career best with 15 points. Earley added three rebounds while senior forward Ed Reid (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl HS) contributed 11 points, three rebounds and three steals. Sophomore guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) tossed in eight points while sophomore guard Justin Chestnut (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland HS) had five points. Junior guard Michael Clemente (Toms River, NJ/Central Regional HS) dished out a team high three assists for the Greyhounds in the contest.

 

            Moravian suffered its second straight loss, falling to Susquehanna University, 78-72, in a Commonwealth Conference game at Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds had an early 7-2 lead in the first half but a 9-0 run by the Crusaders put Susquehanna in the lead for good. The Crusaders would be up by as many as 17 points in the first half before heading into the locker room with a 42-32 advantage. Moravian struggled shooting the ball in the first half, making just 12 of 34 field goal attempts (35.3 percent) and four of seven free throws (57.1 percent) while Susquehanna had a hot hand, making 16 of 30 field half shots (53.3 percent) and five of nine free throws (55.6 percent). The Crusaders, who had a 22-18 rebounding advantage in the first half, also had 12 turnovers at the intermission while Moravian had 11 miscues. In the second half, Susquehanna pushed its lead back to 17 points before Moravian slowly began to cut into the lead. The Greyhounds, who were down 69-59 with three minutes to play, scored 13 of the next 18 points in the game to cut Susquehanna's lead to 74-72 with just seven seconds left. However, the Crusaders made four free throws in the final six seconds for seal the victory. Moravian struggled again from the floor in the second half, making just 12 of 34 field goal attempts for the second 20 minutes. The Greyhounds made 12 of 13 free throws after the intermission. Susquehanna continued to shoot well, making ten of 20 field goal attempts and 13 of 18 free throws (72.2 percent) after the break. The Crusaders also finished the game with a 39-37 edge on the boards. The Greyhounds had three players in double figures led by a career high 18 points from Reid, who also had two assists, two steals and two rebounds. Earley tossed in 11 points to go along with a career high tying seven rebounds while Miller netted ten points to go with three steals. Junior forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville, PA/Coatesville HS) added nine points and six rebounds while sophomore forward Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg {PA} HS) and Zsilavecz each scored seven points and had three rebounds for the Greyhounds. Sophomore forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata HS) added four points, three rebounds and three steals for Moravian.

MORAVIAN’S SALVATORE DEWALT NAMED 2005 DON HANSEN’S HONORABLE MENTION ALL-AMERICAN

 

 

            WESTMONT, IL --- Senior offensive lineman Salvatore DeWalt (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) of the Moravian College football team has been named to the 2005 Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette All-American Honorable Mention Team released late Thursday. 

 

            DeWalt helped the Greyhounds post a 7-4 record this season with a 5-4 slate in the Middle Atlantic Conference, which was good enough to tie for fourth place after the Greyhounds were selected second in the MAC preseason poll. Moravian also won the 2005 ECAC Southwest Bowl Championship with a 14-7 victory over Frostburg State (MD) University.

 

            DeWalt, Moravian’s starting left guard, helped anchor the Greyhounds’ offensive line, which returned four starters this year. DeWalt, who earned a spot on the Don Hansen's Football Gazette All-East Region Second Team this season, helped the Moravian offense average 357.9 yards per game, including 197.5 yards per contest on the ground, which ranked 43rd in the nation ins 2005. DeWalt and the rest of the offense line allowed just 13 sacks this season.

 

            DeWalt, who was a 2005 Preseason All-American by Lindy's magazine, was on the All-Middle Atlantic Conference First Team in 2004 and 2005. DeWalt was on the Don Hansen's Football Gazette All-East Region First Team and the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Southeast All-Star First Team in 2004.
