*Commonwealth Conference game
Moravian had its six-game winning streak snapped and lost
its first Commonwealth Conference game of the season, falling to Widener
University, 80-76, in an overtime game in Chester.
The overtime game was the nationally-ranked Greyhounds' second straight, and
the team's second consecutive loss at the Schwartz Center.
Widener is the first team to score 80 points on the Greyhounds this season and
just the second to score over 70 points versus Moravian. The Greyhounds had an
early 4-2 lead before an 11-0 run by the Pioneers gave Widener a 13-4 edge with
13:07 remaining in the first half. The Greyhounds tied the game at 20-20 with
seven minutes before the intermission only to see the Pioneers pull ahead by
seven points. Widener had a slim 35-34 halftime lead as both squads made 12
field goals and two three-pointers in the first half. The Pioneers were nine of
11 at the foul line while Moravian was eight of ten at the charity stripe
before the intermission. In the second half, Widener held the lead until the
Greyhounds tied the contest at 52-52 with 8:12 left in regulation. The game
would go back-and-forth from there with Moravian holding a 67-65 lead with just
17 seconds to play, however, Widener tied the game with five seconds remaining.
The Greyhounds were just 11 of 35 (31.1 percent) from the field in the second
half, and Moravian, which entered the game shooting over 70 percent at the foul
line, was just 11 of 18 at the charity stripe in the second half (61.1
percent). Widener made just nine of 27 second half field goals but was 12 of 17
at the foul line. The Pioneers won the game in the overtime session at the foul
line. Widener was seven of eight at the charity stripe in the extra five
minutes while Moravian was just three of eight. For the game, the Greyhounds
were just 22 of 36 (61.1 percent) from the foul line, while the Pioneers made
28 of 36 free throws. Moravian had just two players in double figures in the
game with junior forward Kelly Applegate
(Easton, PA/Wilson HS) scoring a
career high 34 points to go with seven rebounds. Senior forward Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem,
PA/Bethlehem
Catholic HS) added 11 points and a team high 13 rebounds in the game. Seaman moved past Linda Atiyeh for 12th on the Moravian
all-time scoring list during the game. Senior forward Lindsay Brase (Bethlehem,
PA/Notre Dame HS) came off
the bench to score nine points and grab seven rebounds for the Greyhounds
before fouling out in overtime. Junior forward Jenny Hackleman (Solvang, CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS)
contributed eight points and four boards before fouling out as well. Junior
guard Rachel Berlin (Bethlehem,
PA/Freedom HS) added six points and tied a career high with six steals
while junior guard Katie Rizman (Wall,
NJ/St. Rose HS) had four points.
The Greyhounds suffered their second straight loss for
the first time in more than two years as nationally ranked Moravian fell at Elizabethtown
College, 69-49, in Commonwealth Conference action. The last time Moravian lost
two consecutive games was on January 10th and 14th, 2004. The 49 points also
marked the lowest point total for the Greyhounds this season. The Blue Jays
jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first 4:40 of the game and were in control the
rest of the way. Late in the first half, the Greyhounds pulled within seven
points at 21-14 before a final Elizabethtown
spurt put the Blue Jays up 42-20 at the intermission. Moravian struggled
shooting the ball in the first half, making just eight of 29 field goal
attempts (27.6 percent) and four of seven free throws (57.1 percent), while
Elizabethtown made 18 of 33 field half shots (54.5 percent) and four of six
free throws. In the second half, Moravian would get no closer than 19 points as
the Greyhounds shooting woes continued. Moravian was just eight of 34 (23.5
percent) from the floor in the second half and 12 of 16 (75 percent) at the
foul line. Elizabethtown
cooled off in the second half, making nine of 23 field goal attempts (39.1
percent) and six of 15 free throws (40 percent). The Greyhounds did have a
44-43 edge in rebounds, and Moravian committed 20 turnovers while forcing Elizabethtown into 24
turnovers. The Greyhounds had just two players in double figures with Seaman and Applegate each scoring ten points. Seaman added a team high eight rebounds and three steals while Applegate and three blocked shots and
