The Greyhounds reached the 90-point plateau for the
fourth time this season and the first time in over a month in a 90-60 victory
over Lebanon Valley College
in a Commonwealth Conference game at Johnston Hall. The win was also Moravian's
fifth straight in Commonwealth Conference action and the 350th of
head coach Mary Beth Spirk’s
career. Moravian raced out to a 6-0 lead and quickly built the lead into double
digits at 13-2 with 16:05 still remaining on the clock in the first half. The
Greyhounds would continue to pull away through out the half heading into the
intermission with a 52-26 lead. Moravian made 22 of 43 field goal attempts
(51.2 percent) in the first half with two three-pointers and a perfect
six-of-six at the foul line. The Greyhounds committed just seven first half
turnovers while forcing the Flying Dutchmen into 20 first half mistakes. Lebanon Valley did go to the break with a 24-20
advantage in rebounds, however, the Flying Dutchmen were just ten of 30 from
the floor (33.3 percent) and six of nine from the foul line at halftime.
Moravian kept its large lead for the entire second half while allowing all 16
players in uniform to play at least three minutes and no one saw more that 21
minutes on the court. The Greyhounds were 15 of 31 from the field (48.4
percent) in the second half to finish at 50 percent (37 of 74) for the game.
Moravian also made three of four three-pointers after the intermission while
going five of nine (55.6 percent) at the foul line. The Greyhounds had ten
turnovers in the second half while Lebanon
Valley made 13 more
turnovers. The Flying Dutchmen shot better in the second half, making 14 of 30
field goal attempts (46.7 percent) to go with three three-pointers and three of
five free throws. Lebanon
Valley also finished the
game with a 40-38 advantage on the boards. The Greyhounds had a balanced
scoring attack with four players in double figures led by 15 points from senior
forward Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS).
Seaman, who also had four rebounds,
two assists and two steals, moved into ninth all-time at Moravian with 1, 161
points. Junior forward Kelly Applegate
(Easton, PA/Wilson HS) added 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, three
steals and a pair of blocked shots in the Greyhounds' victory. Junior forward Jenny Hackleman (Solvang, CA/Rutgers Prep
{NJ} HS) and junior guard Katie
Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) each netted 11 points with Hackleman grabbing a team high eight
rebounds to move into ninth in the Moravian record books with 555 career
rebounds. Hackleman also added four
assists and three steals while Rizman
contributed five assists and three boards in the win. Junior guard Rachel Berlin (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) tossed
in eight points for the Greyhounds while senior forward Lindsay Brase (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame HS) had seven points off
the bench. Sophomore guard Sara Steinman
(Springfield, NJ/ Jonathan Dayton HS) and freshman forward Rachelle Elneus
(Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS) each had five points with Steinman adding three assists and three steals for the Greyhounds.
Senior forward Heather MacDonald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley
HS) came off the bench to contribute four points and four rebounds while
senior forward Nicole Savino (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights HS) added four points and
three steals. Sophomore guard LaToya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS)
was held without a point, but she had four assists, three steals and three
rebounds in the victory while sophomore guard Megan Kocon (Bethlehem,
PA/Liberty
HS) tossed in four points. Freshman forward Cody Fedorishen (Nazareth,
PA/ Allentown
Central Catholic HS) added three rebounds and two points for the
Greyhounds.
Moravian dropped its third conference game of the season,
falling to nationally-ranked Messiah College, 69-55, in the team's final road
game of the regular season. The contest featured two of the
top teams in the nation with the Falcons being ranked 12th in this week's
D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and 15th in the USA Today/ESPN Division III Coaches' Poll
while the Greyhounds received votes in the D3hoops.com poll and were
25th in the Coaches' Poll. The game was close early with Messiah holding a 10-8
lead with about 12 minutes remaining in the half, before a 6-0 run gave the
Falcons a 16-8 lead. Messiah headed into the break with a 33-24 lead. Moravian
struggled from the floor in the first half, making just nine of 37 field goal
attempts (24.3 percent) and just one three-pointer while going five-for-five at
the foul line. On the other hand, Messiah made 15 of 34 field goal attempts in
the first half with three of six free throws. In the second half, Moravian
would pull within three points before the Falcons pushed the lead to double
figures for the final ten minutes of the game. Moravian shot better in the
second half, making 11 of 25 field goal attempts (44 percent) with four
three-pointers. The Greyhounds, who lead the nation in free throws attempted
and made, were just five of eight at the foul line in the second half (62.5
percent) and ten of 13 for the game. Messiah won the game at the foul line,
going 24 of 26 (92.3 percent) in the second half, and the Falcons were just six
of 20 from the floor (30 percent) after the intermission. Messiah won the
battle on the boards with a 44-32 advantage, and the Falcons committed 18
turnovers in the game while Moravian had 13 miscues. The Greyhounds had just
two players in double figures led by Applegate,
who had a game high 30 points, her third game of the season of at least 30
points. Applegate, who was two-for-two
behind the three-point line in the game, also grabbed a team high eight
rebounds. Seaman tossed in ten
points before fouling out of the contest, and she pulled down five rebounds to
move past Mel Newhard
for third all-time in the Moravian record books with 748 career rebounds. Steinman had three points, four assists
and two steals for the Greyhounds while Hackleman
had four points, five rebounds and two steals. Berlin
tossed in three points while Brase
grabbed five rebounds to go with two points for Moravian.

The Greyhounds snapped a two-game losing streak with an
81-61 victory over Lebanon
Valley College
in Commonwealth Conference action in Johnston Hall. Moravian opened the scoring
with a three-pointer on its first possession before the Flying Dutchmen scored
eight straight points for an 8-3 lead with 17:58 remaining in the first half,
Lebanon Valley's largest lead of the game. Moravian scored six unanswered
points to retake the lead at 9-8. The two squads would trade the lead over the
next seven minutes before the score was tied 21-21 with 7:19 remaining in the
first half. Moravian scored seven straight points for a 28-21 lead and never
trailed again. The Greyhounds finished the half with a 17-8 run after the final
tie to head into the intermission with a 36-29 advantage. Moravian made just 12
of 28 field goal attempts (42.9 percent) with a pair of three-pointers; however,
the Greyhounds were a perfect ten-for-ten at the foul line. Both teams had 18
rebounds with Moravian committing seven first half turnovers, and the Flying
Dutchman making eight turnovers. Lebanon
Valley made 11 of 29
first half field goal attempts (37.9 percent) with four three-pointers and
three of six free throws. Moravian slowly pulled away in the second half,
eventually extending the lead to 23 points, 79-56, with 2:13 left in the
contest. The Greyhounds continued to have a hot hand in the second half, making
15 of 31 field goal attempts (48.4 percent), eight of 16 three-pointers and
another perfect seven-for-seven at the foul line. Moravian, which committed
just seven turnovers in the second half, finished the contest with a 37-35 edge
in rebounds. The Flying Dutchmen's shooting woes continued after the
intermission with Lebanon
Valley making ten of 26
field goal attempts (38.5 percent) with four three-pointers and just eight of
16 free throws. Moravian had four players in double figures with all 15 players
in uniform seeing at least three minutes of action. Sophomore guard Ryan Miller (Easton,
PA/Easton HS)
tied his career high with a team high 18 points while sophomore forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata
HS) tossed in 14 points and grabbed a team high six rebounds off the bench.
Sophomore forward Chris Earley (Brielle,
NJ/Manasquan HS) also hit double figures off the bench with 11 points to go
with four rebounds while senior forward Zach
Zsilavecz (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) tossed in ten points to go along with
four rebounds and a pair of steals for the Greyhounds. Sophomore guard Justin Chestnut (Willow
Grove, PA/Upper Moreland HS) contributed
seven points and a pair of assists while junior forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville,
PA/Coatesville HS) had six
points and six rebounds in the victory. Sophomore guard Greg Jones (Bronx, NY/Mount St. Michael Academy HS) nailed a pair
of three-pointers for a career high six points for Moravian while senior
forward Tyler Tripucka (Glen Ridge,
NJ/Glen Ridge HS) grabbed three rebounds.
Moravian won its second straight game with a 75-68 upset
at Messiah College in Commonwealth Conference
action. The Greyhounds have won consecutive contests for the first time in over
a month and earned their first road conference victory of the year. The game
was close throughout the first half as neither team pulled away. Moravian
scored the final six points of the half including a short jumper just as the
first half horn sounded to head into the intermission with a 36-34 lead. The
Greyhounds had a hot shooting touch in the first half, making 14 of 24 field
goal attempts (58.3 percent) with two three-pointers and a perfect six-of-six
at the foul line. Messiah also shot well before the break, hitting 14 of 34
field goal attempts (41.2 percent) with a pair of three-pointers and a
four-for-six performance at the foul line. In the second half, the game would
remain close before the Greyhounds eventually pulled ahead for a ten-point
lead. Moravian made nine of 20 field goals (45 percent) with three
three-pointers after the half. The Greyhounds, one of the top free throw
shooting teams in the country, were 18 of 23 (78.3 percent) after the break to
seal the victory. Messiah did finish with a 40-33 advantage in rebounds, and
the Falcons had just nine turnovers in the game while Moravian made 16
turnovers. Messiah was just 12 of 38 (31.6 percent) from the floor in the
second half with one three-pointers and just nine of 15 free throws (60
percent). Moravian had a balanced scoring attack with three players in double
figures led by 15 points from Zsilavecz,
who also had five rebounds. Earley
came off the bench to score 13 points including a nine-for-nine performance at
the foul line, and Earley added five
rebounds. Franzyshen
contributed 11 points and four boards in limited action off the bench for the
Greyhounds before fouling out of the game. Miller
tossed in nine points with three boards and two assists while Chestnut added nine points and five
assists. Sophomore forward Eric Whitman
(Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg HS) scored six points and
grabbed three rebounds for Moravian while senior forward Ed Reid (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl HS) had five points, three
rebounds and a pair of blocked shots in the victory. Devlin contributed four points and two boards in the win.

The Greyhounds participated in the non-scoring Rider
University-Lafayette College Invitational at the New York City Armory. Moravian
had one first place finish with sophomore Ozzie
Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) winning
the long jump with a leap of 7.07 meters (23 feet, 2 1/2 inches), a provisional
qualifying distance for the NCAA Division III National Championships. Brown also finished third in the
60-meter hurdles in 8.38 seconds, and he was fourth in the high jump, clearing
1.95 meters (six feet, 4 3/4 inches).
Sophomore Nathaniel
Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS) took
fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.44 seconds while sophomore Ty Kern (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS)
was 15th in 8.92 seconds and Jeff Berland (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock HS) finished 20th at
9.37 seconds. Kern was also 20th in
the 200-meter dash in 52.75 seconds and 21st in the 60-meter dash in 7.51
seconds. Junior Josh Kline (Reading, PA/Exeter HS) placed
17th in the 400-meter dash at 52.33 seconds, and he finished 20th in the
200-meter dash in 23.51 seconds. Freshman Robert
Shaffer (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville HS) was 19th in the 60-meter dash in
7.35 seconds and 22nd in the 200-meter dash at 23.65 seconds while sophomore James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin
HS) was 17th in the 60-meter dash in 7.32 seconds and 21st in the 200-meter
dash in 23.60 seconds. Freshman Jared Henrie (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley HS) took 22nd place in the 400-meter dash
in a time of 55.01 seconds while sophomore Vince
Pagano (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin HS) was 23rd in 58.19
seconds.
Freshman Timothy
Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) finished 19th in the 800-meter
run in 2:04.59 while junior Josh Hunter
(Palmerton, PA/Palmerton HS) placed 21st in the mile
run at 4:36.20. Junior Anthony Sarno (Forked River, NJ/Lacey
Township HS) was 23rd
in the mile run in 4:48.52 while senior Greg
Rarick (Drums, PA/Hazleton HS) took 24th in a time of 4:50.51.
Sophomore Nathaniel
Dutile (Plymouth, ME/Nokomis HS) finished fourth
in the shot put with a toss of 14.83 meters (48 feet, eight inches) while
freshman Blair Maginnis
(Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) was seventh with a distance of 13.92
meters (45 feet, eight inches). Dutile also placed 12th in the 35-pound weight throw with a
toss of 13.40 meters (43 feet, 11 3/4 inches). Junior Steve Kondorossy (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery
HS) was 13th in the weight throw at 12.95 meters (42 feet, six inches)
while sophomore Robert Bernadyn (Mahanoy
City, PA/Mahanoy Area
HS) placed 18th in the event with a toss of 11.94 meters (39 feet, 2 1/4
inches). Senior Michael El Kazzaz (Easton, PA/Easton HS) took fifth in the pole
vault, clearing a height of 4.55 meters (14 feet, 11 inches) while freshman Alan Woods (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff
HS) was 11th at 3.80 meters (12 feet, 5 1/2 inches).

Moravian participated in the non-scoring Rider
University-Lafayette College Invitational at the New York City Armory. Junior Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua
HS) had the Greyhounds top individual finish with a sixth place showing in the
60-meter dash with a time of 8.00 seconds. Moravian's only other top ten finish
in the track events was by junior Suzanne
Tamlyn (Wappingers Falls,
NY/Wallkill HS) with a ninth place in the 400-meter dash in a time of
1:01.77.
Recker took
15th place in the 200-meter dash in 26.75 seconds while Tamlyn was 19th in 26.93
seconds. Junior Kathleen McCarron (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) placed
22nd in the 200-meter dash in 27.90 seconds while senior Rebecca Moore (Easton, PA/Easton HS) took 25th
in 28.70 seconds. Tamlyn
also finished 18th in the 60-meter dash in 8.35 seconds while McCarron was
20th in 8.38 seconds. Junior Amy Reehil (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS)
took 22nd in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.62 while sophomore Theresa Zataveski (Quakertown, PA/Gwynedd
Mercy Academy
HS) placed 22nd in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 10.38 seconds.
In the field events, McCarron was tenth in the long
jump at 4.98 meters (16 feet, 4 1/4 inches) while Zataveski was 17th with a leap of 4.56 meters (14 feet, 11 1/2 inches).
Junior Tammy Balliet
(Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) was tenth in the shot put with a distance of
10.41 meters (34 feet, two inches), and she was 15th in the 20-pound weight
throw with a toss of 9.84 meters (32 feet, 3 1/2 inches).
