Greyhound Weekly Update, February 20, 2006 (-2222-)

 

Women’s Basketball – 20-5 (Commonwealth Conference 11-3, MASCAC 14-4)

            The Greyhounds clinched second place in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament with a 68-64 victory over Widener University at Johnston Hall. Moravian and the Pioneers will meet again in Bethlehem on Wednesday, February 22nd at 7:00 p.m. in the Commonwealth Conference Semifinals. It will be the third straight season the two squads have met in the conference tournament in a game played in Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds scored the first four points of the game before Widener tied the game at 4-4 with 17:22 on the clock. Moravian went on an 11-0 over the next 2:30 to build a 15-4 lead; however, the Pioneers responded with an 11-0 run of their own to tie the score again at 15-15 with 12:49 to play before halftime. Moravian immediately retook the lead and headed to the intermission with a 37-31 edge. The Greyhounds were 12 of 30 from the floor (40 percent) with two three-pointers and 11 of 12 (91.7 percent) at the foul line in the first half. Widener had 25-12 advantage in rebounds at the break; however, the Pioneers had also committed 18 turnovers in the first 20 minutes while Moravian had just nine turnovers. Widener made nine of 25 field goal attempts in the first half (36 percent) with two three-pointers and an 11 of 15 performance at the foul line (73.3 percent). The Greyhounds led the entire second half, pushing the lead to double digits twice with 11-point leads of 61-50 and 64-53, the latter with 6:38 remaining in the game. Widener tried a rally late in the game, pulling within four points three times in the final two and a half minutes. The Greyhounds struggled shooting the ball in the second half, making just eight of 28 field goal attempts (28.6 percent) with two three-pointers, and Moravian was just 13 of 20 (65 percent) at the foul line after the break. Widener, which finished the contest with a 51-35 advantage on the boards, also struggled in the second half, making 11 of 35 field goal attempts (31.4 percent) with two three-pointers and nine of 12 free throws (75 percent). Both teams committed ten turnovers in the second half. Moravian had another big game from junior forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS). Applegate, who was named the Lehigh Valley Small College Women's Basketball Player of Year earlier in the day, netted 31 points to go with six rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals. This was Applegate's second straight 30-plus point effort and fourth of the season including both games against Widener. Junior forward Jenny Hackleman (Solvang, CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS) contributed 11 points and a team high nine rebounds in the victory for the Greyhounds while sophomore guards LaToya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) and Sara Steinman (Springfield, NJ/Jonathon Dayton HS) and junior guards Rachel Berlin (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) and Katie Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) all scored five points. Blake added five rebounds while Rizman dished out four assists. Senior forward Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) had eight rebound, six steals, five assists, four points and three blocked shots in the Moravian victory.

 

            Moravian finished out the 2005-06 regular season with a 90-74 victory over Elizabethtown College in Commonwealth Conference action in Johnston Hall. The victory was the Greyhounds' 20th of the season, the program's second straight 20-plus win season and the 13th in school history. Elizabethtown ran out to an early 16-9 lead in the first six minutes of the game. Moravian would be within one point on three occasions; however, the Blue Jays built the lead up to eight points at 26-18 with 8:15 remaining in the first half. The Greyhounds went on a 13-4 run to take their first lead of the game at the 2:31 mark, 31-30. Moravian would go to the break with a 37-34 lead. The Greyhounds struggled from the field in the first half, making just 11 of 28 field goal attempts (39.3 percent) and just two of six three-pointers. Moravian was 13 of 15 (86.7 percent) at the foul line, but committed 14 turnovers. On the other hand, the Blue Jays were hot from the floor in the first 20 minutes, making 13 of 23 field goal attempts (56.5 percent), two of four three-pointers and six of seven (85.7 percent) free throws. Elizabethtown also had a 16-13 edge on the boards in the first half, but the Blue Jays were forced into 20 turnovers before the intermission. The game remaining close early in the second half with Elizabethtown taking a one-point lead twice, the final time at 42-41 with 17:31 remaining on the clock. Seaman connected on a three-pointer to give the Greyhounds the lead back for good and fuel a 9-0 run, putting Moravian up 50-42 with 13:31 left. The Greyhounds eventually pushed the lead into double digits with just over nine minutes remaining, and Moravian's largest lead of the game was 20 points on three different occasions. With 4:10 remaining on the clock, Applegate became the 17th player in Moravian history to score 1,000 career points on a lay-up that gave Moravian a 78-60 lead. The Greyhounds shot much better in the second half, making 18 of 35 field goal attempts (51.4 percent), three of six three-pointers and 14 of 16 free throw attempts (87.5 percent). Elizabethtown made 12 of 30 field goal attempts (40.0 percent), two of four three-pointers and 14 of 21 free throws (66.7 percent) in the second half. Both teams had eight turnovers after the intermission, and the Blue Jays finished the game with a 37-34 advantage on the boards. Applegate was one of three Greyhounds to score in double figures with a team high 23 points on senior day. Applegate also had five rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Seaman added 18 points and a team high eight rebounds while Hackleman contributed 15 points and three steals. Steinman had eight points and three assists for Moravian while Rizman tossed in seven points to go with four assists and three steals. Senior guard Nicole Savino (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights HS), senior forward Heather MacDonald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley HS) and Berlin each had four points while sophomore guard Megan Kocon (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) netted five points off the bench for the Greyhounds. Blake was held scoreless in the game but led Moravian with six assists and six steals.

            The Greyhounds had their two-game winning streak snapped in a 64-60 loss to Widener University in Commonwealth Conference action at Johnston Hall. Moravian trailed 4-2 before a 16-0 Greyhound run put Moravian up 18-4 with 12:36 left in the first half. Widener would slowly climb back into the game, getting as close as five points twice, but the Greyhounds went to the break with a 28-22 advantage. Moravian was 11 of 29 from the floor in the first half (37.9 percent) with five three-pointers. The Greyhounds were just one of two at the foul line and committed eight turnovers; however, Moravian had a 22-16 rebounding advantage. The Pioneers were eight of 26 (30.8 percent) in the first half with one three-pointers and five of eight free throws (62.5 percent). Widener was guilty of six turnovers in the first 20 minutes. Widener quickly tied the game at 32-32 in the second half and took its first lead since the opening two minutes of the game with a 35-32 edge with 16:58 remaining in the contest. The Greyhounds kept the game close with the game being tied six times in the next 11 minutes and neither team building more than a four-point lead. Moravian's final lead came with 3:38 left in the contest as the Greyhounds had a 55-54 advantage. Widener finished the game on a 10-5 run to clinch first place in the upcoming Commonwealth Conference Tournament coupled with Messiah College's lost to Elizabethtown College. In the second half, Moravian was ten of 28 from the floor (35.7 percent) with three three-pointers, and the Greyhounds went nine of 11 from the foul line (81.8 percent). Moravian finished the game with a 41-31 advantage in rebounds, and the Greyhounds made just seven turnovers in the second half. Widener improved its shooting in the second 20 minutes, connecting on 15 of 29 field goal attempts (51.7 percent) with three three-pointers and a nine of 11 performance at the foul line as well. Widener also took care of the ball in the second half with just three turnovers. Sophomore guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) led Moravian with 15 points, two rebounds and two steals while senior forward Zach Zsilavecz (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) had 11 points and three rebounds. Sophomore guard Justin Chestnut (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland HS) and sophomore forward Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg {PA} HS) each tossed in eight points while Chestnut had four assists and Whitman grabbed a career high nine rebounds. Junior guard Michael Clemente (Toms River, NJ/Central Regional HS) contributed six points on a pair of three-pointers for the Greyhounds while junior forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville, PA/Coatesville HS) had five rebounds and four points. Senior forward Ed Reid (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl HS) was limited to just two points and three rebounds but had a career high six blocked shots for Moravian.

 

            Moravian closed out the 2005-06 season with a 74-70 upset victory over Elizabethtown College in Commonwealth Conference action in Johnston Hall. The game was close early in the first half with an 8-8 tie at the 14:18 mark. Elizabethtown went on a 16-6 run to take a 22-14 lead with 6:21 remaining before the intermission; however, Moravian countered with a 9-1 run to tie the contest at 23-23 with 3:47 before the break. The Blue Jays went into halftime with a 30-29 lead. Moravian shot very well in the first half, making 11 of 19 field goal attempts (57.9 percent), two of three three-pointers and five of six free throws (83.3 percent) while Elizabethtown was 11 of 25 (44.0 percent) from the floor, three of 11 on three-pointers and five of seven (71.4 percent) at the foul line. The Greyhounds had a 12-11 edge on the boards, but Moravian committed 20 turnovers in the first 20 minutes while Elizabethtown had 15 miscues. Coming out of the break, Moravian quickly built a 37-32 lead with 17:52 to play, and the Greyhounds would push the lead to 43-35 over the next three minutes. Moravian led 49-42 with 12:22 on the clock when the Blue Jays went on a 9-0 run to take a 51-49 lead with 10:36 remaining. Over the next four minutes, the game was tied twice with Elizabethtown building a brief lead each time after the tie. The final tie was at 61-61 with 6:21 remaining. The Blue Jays scored the next bucket before Moravian took the lead for good, 64-63, on a three-pointer by Clemente with 5:40 remaining. The Greyhounds, who entered the week ranked ninth in the nation in free throw shooting, scored six of their final ten points at the foul line to ice the victory. Moravian shot even better from the floor in the second half, making 14 of 22 field goal attempts (63.6 percent) and five of eight three-pointers (62.5 percent); however, the Greyhounds were just 12 of 18 (66.7 percent at the foul line). Moravian only committed five turnovers in the second half but was out-rebounded by Elizabethtown, 16-10, after the break. The Blue Jays shot 12 of 22 (54.5 percent) from the field in the second half, and Elizabethtown was three of five behind the three-point line and 13 of 19 (68.4 percent) at the foul line while committing seven turnovers in the second half. Moravian, which was celebrating senior day, had five players score in double figures led by Zsilavecz, who netted a game high 18 points. Clemente tossed in 13 points while going three-for-three behind the three-point line while Reid had 12 points and three rebounds. Sophomore forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata HS) and Chestnut each netted ten points in the win for Moravian with Franzyshen grabbing a team high five rebounds. Miller led the Greyhounds with six assists to go with five points, and Whitman added three rebounds.

            Moravian had its final tune-up before the 2006 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation's Indoor Championships at the non-scoring Keogh Invitational hosted by Haverford College. Freshman Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) led the Greyhounds with a 12th place finish in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:05.34 while freshman Jeremiah Rinehart (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) was 20th at 2:10.19 and freshman John McCullough (Levittown, PA/Conwell Egan HS) took 30th in a time of 2:32.91. Sophomore Vince Pagano (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin HS) was 12th in the 400-meter dash in 58.04 seconds. Sophomore Timothy Pagano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West HS) placed 14th in the mile run with a time of 4:45.69 while junior Anthony Sarno (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township HS) was 15th in 4:45.82.

This Week – Sat., Feb. 25th at 2005 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Indoor Championships hosted by Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, PA, 11:00 a.m.

 

            The Greyhounds had their final tune-up before the 2006 Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Indoor Championships at the non-scoring Keogh Invitational hosted by Haverford College. Sophomore Christina Roccamo (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown HS) had Moravian's top individual finish with a tenth place in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:35.94. Freshman Naomie Kachel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) was 24th in the race in 2:44.07. The only other event the Greyhounds had competitors in was the mile run with six runners in the race led by freshman Stephanie Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) finishing 15th in a time of 5:50.31. Kachel placed 19th in the event in 5:55.12 while senior Alexis Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees HS) was 21st in a time of 5:57.08. Junior Jennifer Connolly (Weare, NH/Manchester West HS) placed 24th in 6:01.83 while freshman Kellie Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) was 25th in a time of 6:02.13 and sophomore Katie Pulizzano (Allentown, PA/William Allen HS) was 30th at 6:05.67.

            Moravian will begin its third varsity season this week with a pair of home matches being played at the Robert Ulrich Turf Field on Lehigh University’s Goodman Campus due to construction at Rocco Calvo Field.  The Greyhounds will play Vassar College at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22nd to begin the 2006 season before hosting Wesley (DE) College on Saturday, February 25th at 4:30 p.m.
