Moravian won its first game of the 2006 Salisbury Sea
Gull Invitational with a 5-0 victory over Washington (MD) College. The
Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a two-run
home run by freshman outfielder Erica Klepeisz (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS), her first
collegiate homer. Junior catcher Danielle
Carrione (Bloomfield,
NJ/Mt. St.
Dominic HS) also scored on Klepeisz's homer after leading
off the inning with a double. Moravian added a run in the top of the fourth
inning when Carrione
hit another double to score senior pitcher Meagan
Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS), who had entered the game to
run for senior designated player Richelle McWilliams (Riegelsville, PA/Easton HS). The
Greyhounds pushed another run across the plate in the top of the fifth inning
on an RBI single by McWilliams that
pushed freshman shortstop Jordan Oplinger (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS), who had singled
earlier in the inning, home from third base. Moravian scored its final run in
the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by freshman pinch
hitter/outfielder Deanna Mangieri (Pleasantville,
NY/Byram
Hills HS) that scored Klepeisz. The Greyhounds pounded out 11 hits in the game
with two each from Carrione,
Klepeisz
and junior first baseman Lauren Homa (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS). Hennessy allowed just one hit, a single
in the second inning, and three walks while striking out ten batters. The
shutout was the 39th of Hennessey's
career and second of the season and during the game, Hennessy became the first Moravian pitcher to surpass 600 career
innings pitched.
The Greyhounds dropped their second game of the Salisbury
Sea Gull Invitational to Virginia
Wesleyan College,
5-4. Moravian took a 1-0 lead when freshman catcher Sheri Bienick (Lumberton,
NJ/Rancocas
Valley HS) led off
the bottom of the third inning with her first collegiate hit, a solo home run
to left center field. Moravian had a chance for another run in the inning but
sophomore third baseman Kelly Santry (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland HS) was thrown out at the plate
trying to score on a single by sophomore second baseman Beth Paly (Whitehall,
PA/Whitehall
HS) to end the inning. The Greyhounds extended their lead to 3-0 in the
bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run homer by McWilliams, her second home run on the year. Sophomore outfielder Keri Traficante
(Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) scored on the homer after coming into
pinch run for junior outfielder Justin
Black (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS), who had walked to lead off the inning.
The Marlins would push five runs across the plate in the top of the fifth
inning on a bases loaded walk, a pair of Moravian errors and a two-RBI double.
The Greyhounds would get a run back in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo
home run by McWilliams, her second
homer of the game and third of the season. Moravian had runners at second and
third with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning after a single by Santry and a
ground-rule double by Klepeisz;
however, the Greyhounds were unable to tie the game. Moravian finished with
nine hits including three by Klepeisz and two each from McWilliams and Santry. Freshman pitcher Kristie Pellicani (Sparta, NJ/Sparta HS)
suffered the loss for the Greyhounds in the circle, allowing five runs, three
of them earned, on four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
Hennessy tossed the final 2 2/3
innings for Moravian, allowing just a walk while striking out three batters.
Nationally-ranked Moravian knocked off previously
undefeated Lynchburg (VA) College with a come-from-behind 4-3 victory in the
team's first game on the second day of the Salisbury Sea Gull Invitational. Lynchburg jumped out to a
3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-out, three run homer. The
Greyhounds would respond with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning
on a two-out, two run home run by Black.
The homer was Black's second of the
season and also scored Paly,
who had reached on a fielder's choice. Moravian tied the game at 3-3 with a run
in the bottom of the second inning when Klepeisz delivered a two-out, RBI single to score Homa, who led
off the inning with a single. The game would remain scoreless until the bottom
of the seventh inning when the Greyhounds scored the winning run, again with
two outs in the inning. Black
started the rally with a two-out single. Traficante pinch ran for Black and moved to second on a single
by McWilliams. Traficante crossed the plate
with the winning run on an RBI single by Homa. Moravian had eight hits in
the game with three by Black and two
by Homa. Pellicani earned
her second win of the season in the circle, allowing three runs on three hits
and two walks while striking out seven batters.
In a battle to two nationally ranked teams, Salisbury
University, the second ranked team in the country, dealt the Greyhounds, who
are ranked 17th by the NFCA, their second shutout loss of the season to a
nationally-ranked opponent, 2-0, in the final game of the Salisbury Sea Gull
Invitational. The Sea Gulls scored the only run they would need in the bottom
of the third inning on a two-out, solo home run. Salisbury added a run in the bottom of the
sixth inning on an RBI single. Moravian had just two hits in the game, singles
by Santry
in the third inning and by Black in
the fourth inning. Hennessy suffered
her first loss of the season in the circle, allowing two runs on four hits and
a walk while striking out 11 batters.
