Moravian won at least 20 games for the 13th
straight season and extended its winning streak to 16 games with its eighth
consecutive doubleheader sweep, defeating DeSales University,
5-2 and 4-1, in a non-conference twinbill at Blue
& Grey Field. The Bulldogs jumped
out to a 1-0 lead in the first game in the top of the fourth inning. Moravian would respond with four runs in the
bottom of the fifth inning. After an out, sophomore outfielder Megan Ritchey (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown HS)
connected on a solo home run to left field, her second homer of the season and
the first at the newly renovated Blue & Grey Field. The field went from a
three-foot collapsible fence to a six-foot permanent fence with a warning track
during the off season. Freshman outfielder Erica
Klepeisz (Nazareth, PA /Nazareth HS) and
freshman shortstop Jordan Oplinger (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) followed with back-to-back singles
before an RBI single by sophomore second baseman Beth Paly (Whitehall,
PA/Whitehall
HS) scored Klepeisz.
After the second out of the inning, senior designated player Richelle McWilliams (Riegelsville,
PA/Easton
HS) connected on a two-RBI double down the left field line to score Oplinger and Paly. Moravian would add an insurance run in the
bottom of the sixth inning when Klepeisz hit an infield RBI single to score sophomore third
baseman Kelly Santry
(Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland HS), who had led off the inning with an infield
single. DeSales scored the final run of
the game in the top of the seventh inning.
DeSales had just three hits in the game while Moravian pounded out 11
hits including two each by Ritchey, Klepeisz, Oplinger and Paly. Senior pitcher Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS) improved to
13-1 in the circle for the Greyhounds with her 80th career victory, which moves
her into a tie for 11th in NCAA Division III history. Hennessy allowed two runs on three hits and five walks while
striking out eight batters, raising her career total to 750, eighth in the NCAA
Division III record books.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the second game in the
top of the second inning. Moravian would
tie the game in the bottom half of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by
freshman first baseman Sheri Bienick (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley HS), which scored freshman pitcher Kristie Pellicani
(Sparta, NJ/ Sparta HS). Pellicani had
come in as the flex runner for McWilliams,
who had reached on a wild pitch after striking out to lead off the inning. The Greyhounds would score their other three
runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a three-run homer by Bienick, her
third home run of the season. With two outs in the inning, junior outfielder Lauren Homa (Chalfont, PA/
Central Bucks West HS) and Santry hit back-to-back singles before Bienick launched a 1-2 pitch
over the right-centerfield fence.
Moravian finished the game with ten hits including two by Bienick, who
also doubled, Santry
and freshman catcher Deanna Mangieri (Pleasantville,
NY/Byram
Hills HS). DeSales had just one hit.
Pellicani
improved to 7-1 in the circle for Moravian, allowing just an unearned run a
hits and four walks with nine strikeouts in the complete game.
The Greyhounds saw their 16-game winning streak snapped
in the first game of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader versus Lebanon Valley College
at Blue & Grey Field, falling 1-0 in the first game; however, the Greyhounds
earned a split of the twinbill Sunday afternoon with
a 6-0 victory in the second game. The
Flying Dutchmen would score the only run of the first game in the top sixth
inning on a pair of walks and a two-out, RBI single. The Greyhounds had runners in scoring
position in four of seven innings, three times with one or no outs and were
unable to score. Paly, McWilliams and Carrione each had
singles in the first three innings but were stranded at second base by the
Greyhounds. Klepeisz led off the bottom of the sixth inning
for Moravian with a double off the top of the new six-foot permanent fence at
Blue & Grey Field; however, she was stranded at third base. Hennessy fell to 13-2 in the circle for
the Greyhounds, allowing a run on three hits and four walks while striking out
seven batters. The complete game gave Hennessy,
700 innings pitched in her career, just the 16th player in NCAA Division III
history to reach that plateau.
Moravian scored the only run Hennessy would need in the second game in the bottom of the first
inning. Klepeisz
singled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI single by junior outfielder
Justina Black (Orefield,
PA/Parkland
HS). The Greyhounds added a pair of
runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Carrione led of the inning with a solo home run to left
field, her first homer of the season. Oplinger doubled with one out and would score on an RBI
single by Black. Moravian finished off the scoring with three
runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Homa led off the
inning with an infield single and scored on another infield single by Carrione. After
infield singles by Klepeisz
and Oplinger
loaded the bases, Paly
connected on a two-RBI single to left field that scored Carrione and Klepeisz. Moravian pounded out
12 hits in the game with Oplinger going three-for-three and two hits each from Klepeisz, Paly, Black and Carrione. Hennessy
improved to 14-2 in the circle with her ninth shutout of the season. She
allowed just two hits and no walks while striking out eight batters. Hennessy is now seventh all-time in
NCAA Division III history with 765 career strikeouts, tied for third in career
shutouts with 46, tied for tenth in career victories with 81 and 16th in career
innings pitched with 707.

Moravian dropped a Commonwealth Conference match to Albright College, 6-1, at Hoffman Courts. The
Lions opened the match with wins at two of the three doubles matches to earn
the doubles point. The Greyhounds did earned a win from the team of junior Scott Shelbo (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) and freshman Lee Gustin (Allentown, PA/Dieruff
HS) at second doubles. Moravian's lone point came in singles action on a
straight sets win by Shelbo.
Senior Neil Caniga
(Hampton, NJ/Voorhees
HS) and freshman Keith Feinman (Haddonfield,
NJ/Haddonfield HS) each lost
three-set matches in singles action.
The Greyhounds lost a Commonwealth Conference match to Elizabethtown College, 4-3, at Hoffman Courts.
Moravian won one of three doubles matches to start the contest with a victory
at third doubles from the team of Feinman and freshman Jeremiah
Reinhart (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley HS). In singles action, Moravian
received straight sets wins from Feinman and Caniga and a three-set victory by Gustin.
Moravian earned its second Commonwealth Conference
victory of the season, defeating previously undefeated Juniata College,
4-3, in a conference match. The Greyhounds took the doubles point to begin the
contest with victories by the teams of Shelbo and Gustin and the freshmen duo of Feinman and Rinehart. Moravian won three of the singles matches to take the win
with victories by Shelbo
at second singles, Gustin
at fifth singles and Caniga
at first singles. Reinhart also won
a set of his singles match before falling at sixth singles.
The Greyhounds won their second straight match with a 7-0
sweep of Chestnut
Hill College
in non-conference action at Hoffman Courts. Moravian opened the match with
three doubles wins to earn the doubles point. The Greyhoudns
received victories from the teams of Caniga and senior Sean
Lynch (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS), Shelbo and Gustin and Feinman and Reinhart. The Greyhounds would also
sweep the doubles action with straight sets wins by Caniga, Shelbo, Lynch, Feinman,
Gustin and
Reinhart. Shelbo needed a tiebreaker in
his first set. The singles victory by Caniga was the 30th of his career, tying him for sixth in
school history.

The Greyhounds dropped a 14-7 non-conference match at
York College of Pennsylvania. The match was tied 2-2 at the end of the first
quarter but the Spartans scored five unanswered goals in the second quarter for
a 7-2 halftime lead. Both teams would net three goals in the third quarter
before York
outscored Moravian, 4-2, in the final 15 minutes. The Spartans had a 40-26
advantage in shots, a 49-35 edge in ground balls and won 16 of 24 face-offs in
the match. Junior midfielder TJ Hirsch (Putnum Valley,
NY/Walter Panas HS) led the
Greyhounds with three goals and an assist while freshman attack Jason Tosches
(West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South HS) netted two goals. Hirsch also had a team high five ground
balls and won six of 13 face-offs. Junior midfielder Ken Blom (Rochelle Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic HS) had a goal and an
assist while freshman midfielder Kyle
Gardner (Emmaus, PA/Perkiomen Prep HS) netted one goal. Sophomore midfielder
Aaron Satterfield (Mt. Arlington, NJ/Pope
John XXIII HS) contributed an assist and five ground balls while Tosches scooped
up four ground balls. Freshman goalie Benjamin
Larson (Dover, DE/Dover HS) had 13
saves in just under 54 minutes of action in the match for the Greyhounds, and
he added five ground balls. Sophomore keeper Peter Coutros (Chalfton,
PA/Central Bucks West HS) made one save in the final six minutes for
Moravian.
Moravian earned its first Middle Atlantic Conference
victory of the season and snapped an eight-match losing streak with a 6-5
victory at King's College. The Monarchs had a 1-0 lead at the end of the first
quarter and a 3-1 lead at the intermission. King's would still hold a 4-3 lead
after three quarters but the Greyhounds netted three goals in the final 15
minutes while holding the Monarchs to one for the victory. Hirsch led the Greyhounds with three goals while freshmen attacks Christopher Danni (Macungie, PA/Emmaus
HS) and Tosches
and Gardner each scored once. Danni netted the game-winning goal for
Moravian while Tosches
had a pair of assists as did Blom. Hirsch won seven of ten face-offs in
the match while sophomore defenders David
Poppe (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury HS) and Adam Melroy (Newton, NJ/Pope John
XXIII HS) and sophomore defender Steven
Carroll (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell HS) each had four
ground balls. Larson earned his
first career victory in the cage for the Greyhounds, making eight saves and a
team high six ground balls.

Moravian earned a 9-7 victory over Neumann College
in a non-conference game at Gillespie Field.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third
inning. With two on and no outs, sophomore second baseman John Bisco (Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS)
laid down a sacrifice bunt, and a throwing error by Neumann allowed freshman
shortstop Kevin Gambrino
(Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan HS) to score from second base. Junior
shortstop Pete Moore (Bogota,
NJ/Bogota HS) drove
in the other two runs with a two-RBI double to score sophomore outfielder Josh Baltz (Easton,
PA/Easton HS)
and freshman outfielder Joseph Durso (Middletown,
NJ/Christian Brother Academy HS). Moravian would extend its lead to 6-0 with
three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Baltz doubled to drive in Gambrino with the first run of the inning. Moore connected on a two-RBI single to push Baltz and Durso across the plate again.
The Knights would get three runs back in the top of the fifth inning, cutting
the Moravian lead to 6-3. Neumann tied
the game with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Greyhounds responded in the bottom of the
sixth inning with a pair of runs. Junior catcher Colin Welles (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere HS) had
an RBI single to score Moore, and freshman first
baseman Christopher Rue (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel
HS) followed with an RBI single to score Welles. Moravian added an
insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI triple by senior
pitcher/designated hitter Richie Cline
(Union Beach, NJ/Keyport HS) that scored Bisco. The Greyhounds finished
the game with nine hits including two each by Moore
and Rue. Moore's two hits give him 99 for his career,
one shy of becoming the tenth player in school history with 100 career hits. Cline
started on the mound for Moravian but did not register a decision despite
allowing just three runs on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts in
five innings of action. Junior Josh
Hunter (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton HS) received the win
despite giving up three runs on two hits and a walk with one strikeout in one
inning. Senior John Howarth (Livingston, NJ/Livingston HS) tossed
2 1/3 innings of relief for the Greyhounds, allowing one run on two hits and a
walk with one strikeout. Sophomore Brett
Stout (Easton, PA/Easton HS) came on
for his first collegiate save, striking out both batters he faced.
The Greyhounds split a Commonwealth Conference
doubleheader at Albright
College, losing the first
game, 2-1, and then earning its first conference win of the season in the
second game with a 9-4 victory. The Lions scored both of their runs in the
bottom of the first inning of the first game.
The Greyhounds would cut Albright's lead in half in the top of the
second inning when Cline scored on
an RBI single by freshman third baseman Matthew
McCarthy (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central
Catholic HS). Cline had been hit
by a pitch to lead off the inning. Both
teams struggled at the plate with each team collecting four hits. For the
Greyhounds, Moore
doubled to lead off the fourth inning for his 100th career hit, the tenth
Greyhound to reach the plateau. Moravian sophomore Matthew Swartz (Dunmore,
PA/Dunmore HS) took the loss
on the mound in his first complete game of the season. Swartz allowed two runs, just one earned, on four hits and two
walks while striking out seven batters.
The Lions would take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the
first inning of the second game. Moravian would cut the lead in half in the top
of the second inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by Rue that scored Moore,
who had singled earlier in the inning. The Greyhounds tied the game at 2-2 in
the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Durso that pushed Baltz across
the plate. Baltz had doubled to lead
off the inning. Moravian erupted for
five runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 7-2 lead. Freshman
outfielder Eric Shea (Madison,
NJ/Morristown
Beard HS) drove in the first run with an RBI double that scored Welles, who had singled. Baltz followed with a two-RBI single to
score Rue and Shea. After a pitching change and a single by Bisco, Durso hit a two-RBI single to
score Baltz and Bisco. Albright would cut into the lead in the
bottom of the fifth inning, scoring two runs.
Moravian would get the two runs back in the top of the sixth inning when
Shea scored on an Albright error and
Bisco hit
an RBI single to score Baltz. Moravian finished the game with 13 hits
including two each off the bats of Baltz,
Bisco, Durso and Cline.
Moravian sophomore Trevor
Lawrence (Lansford, PA/Marian Catholic HS) earned his first victory of the
season on the mound, allowing four runs, just one earned, on four hits and two
walks while striking out two batters.

University. Junior Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua
HS) had the Greyhounds top individual finish with a third place in the
100-meter dash in a time of 12.57 seconds. Junior Amy Reehil (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS)
was 14th in the 100-mter dash in a time of 13.30 seconds while junior Kathleen McCarron
(Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) was 17th in 13.41 seconds and freshman Rachelle Elneus
(Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS) was 21st in a time of 13.61 seconds. Moravian's
4x100-meter relay squad of McCarron, Recker,
junior Suzanne Tamlyn
(Wappingers
Falls, NY/Wallkill
HS) and Elneus
placed ninth in time 50.39 seconds.
Reehil
was also 16th in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:11.53 while senior Rebecca Moore (Easton,

HS) was 22nd in the event with a time of 1:16.67. Tamlyn placed 12th in the
400-meter dash in a time of 1:02.46 for the Greyhounds while freshman Naomie Kachel (Shillington, PA/Governor
Mifflin HS) was 29th in the 1,500-meter run in 5:30.56.

Moravian earned its first victory of the 2006 season,
defeating local rival Cedar
Crest College,
15-5, in a non-conference match on the HUB Quad. The Greyhounds jumped out to a
quick 3-0 lead before the Falcons scored two goals. Moravian would head to the
intermission with a 5-2 lead, and the Greyhounds scored ten goals in the second
half for the victory. Moravian had a 41-21 advantage in shots and a 42-22 edge
in ground balls while Cedar Crest had a 12-9 edge in draw controls. For the
Greyhounds, junior midfielder Lindsey
Lustrino (Spring Lake, NJ/Manasquan HS) tied the school record
with eight points in the match with seven goals and one assist. Sophomore
attacks Casey Simpson (Laporte, PA/Sullivan County HS) and Jessica Bodine
(Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS) each found the back of the cage once for
Moravian while senior midfielders Jessica
Cordani (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro HS) and Kindal Estes (New Providence, NJ/New
Providence HS), sophomore midfielder Robyn
Klem (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) and
freshman midfielder Georgia Castellano
(Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West HS) each had goals. Senior defender Lauren Johnston (Huntingdon Valley,
PA/Upper Moreland HS) led the Greyhounds with nine ground balls and two
draw controls while Lustrino added
seven ground balls and two draw controls. Sophomore goalie Laura Schantz (Bethlehem,
PA/Liberty
HS) earned her first collegiate victory in the cage for Moravian, making
seven saves.
The Greyhounds dropped a 13-2 decision at Drew University
in Middle Atlantic Conference action. The Rangers, who led 12-0 at halftime,
had a 25-6 advantage in shots, a 32-15 edge in ground balls and a 14-3
advantage in draw controls. Lustrino
scored fro Moravian on a free position shot while Bodine added an unassisted goal.
Estes had a team high five ground
balls for the Greyhounds while Schantz had five saves.
Moravian suffered a 10-2 loss to Lycoming College
in a Middle Atlantic Conference match played on the HUB Quad. The match was called after it had been played
to an official time limit due to rain, sleet and snow that had fallen during
the match. At one point, the snow was falling heavy enough to blanket the field
with a layer of snow. Moravian scored
the first goal of the match in the second minute, but the Warriors responded
with six unanswered goals to take a 6-1 halftime lead. Lycoming would score the
first four goals of the second half before Moravian scored at the 49:03 mark. At that point, the officials deemed the field and
conditions to dangerous to continue. Lycoming finished the game with a 22-9
edge in shots, a 47-36 advantage in ground balls and an 8-5 edge in draw
controls. Cordani and Lustrino each
scored unassisted goals for the Greyhounds, and Lustrino had a team high five ground balls and four caused
turnovers. Schantz made nine saves in the match and added
four ground balls.

Moravian participated in the second day of the
non-scoring Sam Howell Invitational hosted by Princeton University.
Sophomore Nathaniel Tussey
(Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS) turned in the Greyhounds top individual
finish, placing fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles in an NCAA Division III
provisional qualifying time of 14.82 seconds. Tussey was also eighth in the
400-meter hurdles in 56.79 seconds while sophomore Ozzie Brown (Plymouth
Meeting, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh HS) placed fifth
in the 100-meter dash in 11.19 seconds.
In field events, sophomore Nathaniel Dutile (Plymouth, ME/Nokomis HS)
took fifth place in the discus throw with a toss of 45.29 meters (148 feet, 7
1/4 inches) while senior Michael El Kazzaz (Easton, PA/Easton HS) was sixth in the pole
vault, clearing a height of 4.45 meters (14 feet, 7 1/4 inches). Junior Michael Ossont (Archbald, PA/valley View HS) was ninth in the javelin
with a distance of 44.06 meters (144 feet, seven inches) while Dutile placed
tenth in the shot put with a toss of 14.50 meters (47 feet, seven inches).
Sophomore Robert Bernadyn
(Mahanoy City, PA/Mahanoy Area HS) took 18th in the hammer throw with a
distance of 32.23 meters (105 feet, 9 1/4 inches) while senior Robert Kilmurray
(Wall, NJ/Wall HS) was 14th in the discus at 39.31 meters (129 feet) and
junior Steve Kondorossy
(Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery HS) was 22nd with a distance of 34.03 meters
(111 feet, eight inches).
Freshman Jeff Berland (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock HS) took 11th in the
110-meter high hurdles in 16.14 seconds while freshman Robert Shaffer (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown HS)
took 14th in the 100-meter dash in 11.32 seconds. Junior Josh Kline (Reading, PA/Exeter HS) placed 14th in the 400-meter
dash in 52.00 seconds while sophomore James
Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) was 20th in the
100-meter dash in a time of 11.51 seconds. Moravian's 4x100-meter relay team of
Bell,
Brown, Shaffer and Kline took
sixth in a time of 43.84 seconds.

The Greyhounds placed fourth of 20 schools at the Lebanon
Valley College Spring Invitational with a team score of 322. Neumann College
took first place at the tournament with a team total of 315 on the Lebanon
Country Club course. Senior Dustin
McCormick (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg HS) led Moravian with a round of 77
on the par 72 course, tying him for sixth of the 102 golfers. Sophomore Eric Whitman (Blairstown,

in a tie for 22nd with an 18-hole total of 82 while junior Thad Miller (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus
HS) and sophomore Bryan Ott (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) each
carded rounds of 82 to tie for 27th place. Junior John Gilbert (Allentown,
PA/Freedom HS) rounded out
the Moravian line-up with a round of 92 which tied him for 82nd place.
Moravian has canceled its annual Spring Invitational at
Southmoore golf course due to weather conditions. The tournament will not be
rescheduled.
The Greyhounds were in seventh place of 15 schools after
the first day of the Mid-Atlantic Region Invitational being played at the
Hershey Country Club. Moravian had a team score of 329 on the first day while Washington & Jefferson College was in first place with a 317. No
individual scores were available.
