The Greyhounds began their 2005-06 Commonwealth
Conference season with an 80-66 victory over Albright College
in Moravian's first home game of the year. The Greyhounds were able to play all
14 players in uniform for at least eight minutes and 13 players saw at least
ten minutes of action with no one over 19 minutes. Moravian jumped out to a
51-21 halftime lead after shooting 18 of 34 from the floor (52.9 percent) in
the first half. The Greyhounds did struggle in the game as the team committed
31 turnovers including 20 in the second half, and Moravian, one of the top free
throw shooting teams in the country the last few years, was just 20 of 35 at
the foul line (57.1 percent) for the game. Moravian did have a 47-43 advantage
on the boards. The Greyhounds had a balanced scoring attack with just two
players in double figures led by 12 points from junior forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS).
Senior forward Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) hit
double digits for the first time this season with ten points, and she grabbed a
team high six rebounds to go with two assists. Applegate had four boards in addition to four steals and three
blocked shots, both team highs. Sophomore guard Sara Steinman (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton HS) and junior guard
Rachel Berlin (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS)
each netted nine points while junior forward Jenny Hackleman and freshman
forward Rachelle Elneus
(Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS) each scored eight points. Hackleman added four rebounds and three steals while Elneus had five
boards. Senior forward Lindsay Brase
(Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame HS) contributed six points, three rebounds and
two assists in the victory while senior guard Nicole Savino (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights HS) and junior guard
Katie Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) each
netted five points. Savino had three
rebounds while senior forward Heather
MacDonald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley
HS) had four points and four rebounds in the victory for Moravian.
Sophomore guard LaToya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff
HS) added three rebounds and three steals for the Greyhounds.
Moravian, ranked 15th in the nation, won its fifth
straight game to begin the 2005-06 season with a 94-53
victory at Lincoln (PA) University in non-conference action. The Greyhounds had
an early 5-2 lead before a 20-0 run over a 9:13 span put Moravian in control
for good. The Greyhounds led 49-18 at halftime after shooting 51.6 percent from
the floor (16 of 31), 33.3 percent behind the three-point line (three of nine)
and 77.9 percent at the free throw line (14 of 18). Moravian finished the game
with just 15 turnovers while forcing the Lions into 26 turnovers and the
Greyhounds had a 45-44 edge on the boards. Moravian attempted 42 free throws in
the game, making 30 (71.4 percent). For the second straight game, all 14
Greyhounds in uniform played at least seven minutes and no one played more than
20 minutes in the victory. Moravian also had a balanced scoring attack with
just three players in double figures and everyone scoring at least three
points. Elneus
paced the Greyhounds with a career high 13 points, and she also grabbed a
career best seven rebounds. Seaman
hit double figures for the second straight game with 12 points to go with six
rebounds and three assists while Hackleman
contributed 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Steinman and Brase each netted eight points for the Greyhounds with Steinman adding two rebounds and two
assists and Brase contributing five
rebounds and three steals. Applegate
and Berlin each had seven points
with Berlin adding four rebounds
while Rizman and junior guard Kristina Adams (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery HS) each scored five points. Savino, MacDonald and Blake each
had four points while senior guard Dianna
DiFiore (Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph HS) and
sophomore guard Megan Kocon (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) each netted
three points in the victory. MacDonald
added three rebounds while Savino
and Blake each had three boards. DiFiore contributed
four rebounds.
The Greyhounds remained undefeated on the year with a
65-64 victory at Juniata
College in Commonwealth
Conference action. Moravian had a three-point lead at 12-9 with 14:23 remaining
in the first half, but the Eagles would go on a 17-7 run to take a 26-19 lead
with 7:10 left before the intermission. The Greyhounds pulled within a point at
28-27 with 5:15 left in the half; however, Moravian failed to score during the
rest of the half while Juniata built a
six-point halftime lead, 33-27. Moravian shot 55 percent from the floor in the
first half, making 11 of 20 field goal attempts, but the Greyhounds turned the
ball over 19 times in the game's first 20 minutes. When the second half
started, it took Moravian nearly five minutes to tie the game at 41-41 with
15:18 left on the clock. The Greyhounds would eventually take the lead at 49-47
with 9:46 remaining in the game but Juniata
would rally and retake the lead. The schools would trade the lead the rest of
the game with the Eagles up 64-63 with just 18 seconds to play. Steinman was fouled with 2.6 seconds
remaining in the contest and drained both free throws to give the Greyhounds a
65-64 lead. Juniata was unable to get a final
shot off. Moravian shot well in the second half, making 16 of 30 field goal
attempts (53.3 percent), bit the Greyhounds, who were five-of-six at the foul
line in the first half (83.3 percent), made just five of 12 free throws in the
second half (41.7 percent). Moravian would commit just ten turnovers in the
second half and finish the game with a 36-26 advantage on the boards. The
Greyhounds had just six players score in the game with
three in double figures led by a game high 20 points from Hackleman. Hackleman
added five rebounds and four steals. Applegate
contributed 19 points, a game high 11 rebounds and two
assists while Seaman added 15 points
and seven rebounds. Steinman
finished with seven points including her game winning free throws. Rizman and Blake each scored two points with Blake adding five steals and Rizman
dishing out two assists.

Moravian began its 2005-06 indoor season with a fifth
place finish of five schools at the 2005 Lafayette College Invitational at Kirby Sports
Center. The Greyhounds,
the only NCAA Division III team in the meet, scored 66 points while Rider University
was first with 166.5 points. Moravian did have two individual winners with
sophomore Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting,
PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) capturing first in the
high jump, clearing a height of six feet, five inches (1.95 meters) and senior Michael El Kazzaz
(Easton, PA/Easton HS) winning the pole vault, clearing 13 feet, nine
inches (4.19 meters). Brown also set
a Moravian record in the 300-yard dash with a time of 32.80 seconds, which was
third in the race.
Brown also
competed in the long jump, placing ninth at 5.58 meters (18 feet, 3 3/4
inches), and he was seventh in the preliminaries of the 60-yard dash in 6.42
seconds. Freshman Alan Woods
(Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff HS) tied for fourth in the pole vault,
clearing 11 feet, nine inches (3.58 meters) in his first collegiate event. In
the throwing events, sophomore Nathaniel
Dutile (Plymouth, ME/Nokomis HS) was fifth in the
35-pound weight throw with a toss of 14.12 meters (46 feet, four inches), and
he was sixth in the shot put at 13.62 meters (44 feet, 8 1/4 inches). Sophomore
Robert Bernadyn
(Mahanoy City, PA/Mahanoy Area HS) took eighth in the weight throw at 11.93
meters (39 feet, 1 3/4 inches) and was ninth in the shot put with a toss of
10.57 meters (34 feet, 8 1/4 inches). Junior Steve Kondorossy (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery
HS) finished sixth in the weight throw at 13.12 meters (43 feet, 1/2 inch)
while junior Patrick Callahan (Matawan,
NJ/Matawan HS) was ninth in the event with a toss of 10.93 meters (35 feet,
10 1/2 inches).
Sophomore Nathaniel
Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown Area HS) led
Moravian in the sprint events, placing second in the finals for the 60-yard
hurdles in 7.34 seconds after running a time of 7.70 seconds in the
preliminaries. Freshman Jeff Berland (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock HS) was sixth in the
event with a finals time of 8.01 seconds after placing sixth in the
preliminaries with a time of 7.90 seconds. Sophomore Ty Kern (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) ran a time of
7.95 seconds in the preliminaries, which placed him seventh. In the 60-yard
dash, sophomore James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor
Mifflin HS) finished in a tie for third in 6.50 seconds after running a
time of 6.28 seconds in the preliminaries, which had him placed fourth. Berland was 12th
in the preliminaries of the 60-yard dash in 6.77 seconds while Tussey was 13th
at 6.81 seconds. Kern was eighth in
the 300-yard dash in 34.21 seconds while Bell took 13th
in a time of 35.10 seconds.
Freshman Stephen Mulchay (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) was ninth in the
440-yard dash with a time of 59.33 seconds in his first meet for the Greyhounds
while sophomore Vince Pagano (Harrisburg,
PA/Central Dauphin HS) finished tenth in 59.91 seconds. Freshman Tim Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem
Catholic HS) placed seventh in the 500-meter run at 1:11.43 while junior Anthony Sarno (Forked
River, NJ/Lacey Township HS) was sixth in the one mile run in a time of
4:50.90. Freshman Jeremiah Rinehart (Effort,
PA/Pleasant Valley HS) was seventh in the mile
run at 4:59.60.

The Greyhounds began their 2005-06 indoor season with a
fifth place finish at the Lafayette College Invitational at the Kirby Sports
Center. Moravian, the
only NCAA Division III school in the meet, scored 15
points while the host Leopards won the invitational with 165 points. Junior Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) had
the Greyhounds top individual finish, placing third in the finals of the
60-yard dash with a time of 7.20 seconds after running the preliminaries in
6.90 seconds, which had placed her seventh.
Junior Kathleen McCarron (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth
HS) was third in the preliminaries of the 60-yard dash in a time of 6.58
seconds but did not compete in the finals. Senior Rebecca Moore (Easton, PA/Easton HS) was 12th in the 60-yard dash in 7.51
seconds while junior Suzanne Tamlyn (Wappingers Falls, NY/Wallkill
HS) placed 13th at 7.58 seconds in the preliminaries. In the 60-yard hurdle
preliminaries, sophomore Theresa
Zataveski (Quakertown, PA/
Gwynedd Mercy
Academy) was ninth in 9.60 seconds
while junior Amy Reehil
(Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS)
placed 11th in 10.11 seconds. Tamlyn also took ninth in the 440-yard dash in a time of
1:05.42 seconds while Moore finished
11th in 1:07.94. Reehill
was seventh in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:28.74 while Recker was eighth in the 220-yard dash
in 28.02 seconds. Tamlyn
finished 11th in the 220-yard dash in 28.40 seconds while Zataveski took 17th in a time of 29.81 seconds.
In the field events for the Greyhounds, McCarron was
fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 9.86 meters (34 feet, 4 1/4 inches).
Junior Tammy Balliet
(Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) took ninth in the 20-pound weight throw with a
toss of 10.84 meters (35 feet, 6 3/4 inches), and she was eighth in the shot
put with a distance of 10.05 meters (32 feet, 11 3/4 inches). Sophomore Ashlee Scarborough (Warrington, PA/Villa
Joseph Marie HS) was 12th in the shot put at 7.41 meters (24 feet, 3 3/4
inches) while Zataveski finished
13th with a toss of 5.66 meters (18 feet, seven inches).

The Greyhounds opened their 2005-06 Commonwealth
Conference season in the squad's first home game with a 78-68 loss to defending
Commonwealth Conference Champion
Albright College.
Moravian would actually lead most of the first half, opening up a 16-10 lead
with 11:27 until the intermission; however, the Lions used a 15-6 run to take a
25-22 lead with 5:37 left in the first half. The score would be tied twice more
but Albright scored on a put back as the horn sounded for a 32-30 halftime
lead. In the second half, the Lions opened an early nine-point lead at 43-34
and would hold at least a four-point advantage the rest of the way. The
Greyhounds made 23 of 67 field goal attempts (34.3 percent) in the game and 17
of 21 free throws (81.0 percent). However, Moravian was just five of 27 behind
the three-point line and committed 17 turnovers. The Lions, who had a 43-38
advantage on the boards, committed 25 turnovers in the game, but Albright was
27 of 56 from the floor (48.2 percent) including 18 of 26 (69.2 percent) after
the intermission. Moravian had three players score in double figures including
a team high 13 points by sophomore guard Justin
Chestnut (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland HS). Sophomore guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS)
tossed in 11 points to go with three rebounds, two assists and three steals
while junior guard Michael Clemente
(Toms River, NJ/Central Regional HS) netted ten points to go along with
five steals, three rebounds and two assists. Junior forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville,
PA/Coatesville HS) scored eight points,
and Devlin and senior forward Ed Reid (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen
Argyl HS) each grabbed a team high six rebounds and each player had two
blocked shots. Reid added four
points as did senior forward Zach
Zsilavecz (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) and sophomore forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata
HS). Zsilavecz also contributed
three rebounds for the Greyhounds. Sophomore forward Chris Earley (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan
HS) had six points while sophomore forward Eric Whitman (Blairstown,
NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg
{PA} HS) netted five points for the Greyhounds. Sophomore guard Greg Jones (Bronx, NY/Mount
St. Michael Academy) added three points in the game.
Moravian dropped its third straight game, falling to
rival Muhlenberg College, 82-75, in Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds had an early
8-7 lead as the first half went back-and-forth with the largest lead for either
team being a five point Muhlenberg lead, 29-24 with 4:43 to play before the
intermission. The Mules had a one-point edge, 33-32, at halftime as both teams
made 12 field goals. Muhlenberg slowly opened a ten-point lead at 52-42 with
12:17 remaining in the contest, but an 18-7 run would give Moravian a 60-59
lead with 5:45 left in the game. The Greyhounds would lead 65-64 with 3:55 left
before an 11-0 run put the Mules up 75-65 with just 1:48 to play. Both teams
shot over 40 percent from the floor in the game with Muhlenberg connecting on
24 of 56 field goal attempts (42.9 percent) including an 11-of-23 performance
behind the three point while Moravian was 27 of 66 field the field (40.9
percent) and seven of 21 beyond the three-point arc. Both schools struggled
from the free throw line with Muhlenberg making 23 of 37 free throws (62.1
percent), and the Greyhounds just 14 of 24 (58.3 percent). The Mules also had a
43-37 advantage on the boards. Moravian had four players in double figures for
the first time this season led by 16 points from Reid, who also had a team high three steals. Miller and Franzyshen
each tossed in 11 points, a career high for Franzyshen, who also pulled down
a career best seven rebounds. Zsilavecz
added ten points and four rebounds for the Greyhounds while Chestnut contributed nine points, seven
assists and two boards. Earley had
seven points and seven rebounds off the bench for Moravian while Clemente added six points, three
rebounds and three assists. Devlin
scored five points for the Greyhounds. The victory gives Muhlenberg a 5-4 lead
in the annual Matte Award standings so far in 2005-06.
The Greyhounds dropped their second straight Commonwealth
Conference game and fourth overall in a 100-70 loss at Juniata College.
Moravian fell behind 55-25 in the first half and was unable to cut into the
lead in the second half. The Greyhounds were 28 of 70 (40.0 percent) from the
floor in the game and nine of 17 (52.9 percent) at the foul line. The Eagles
connected on 36 of 60 field goal attempts (60.0 percent) with seven
three-pointers, and Juniata was 21 of 28 at
the foul line (75.0 percent). The Eagles also had a 43-30 advantage on the
boards. Moravian had three players in double figures led by 16 points by Reid, who also had three rebounds and
three assists. Franzyshen
scored a career high for the second straight game with 12 points, and he added
five rebounds while Miller tossed in
ten points. Devlin contributed nine
points and four rebounds for the Greyhounds while Chestnut had seven points, five assists and two steals. Earley added five points and two boards
while Zsilavecz had three points and
three rebounds in the game for Moravian.
