The Greyhounds improved to 7-0 for just the second
time in school history with a 66-53 victory at Drew University
in non-conference action. Moravian jumped out to a quick lead and led 14-5 with
16:17 remaining in the first half. The Rangers would score the next eight
points; however, Moravian quickly built the lead back to six points at 19-13
with 13 minutes left in the half. Drew would take a one-point lead with 6:24
left before the intermission and the lead would be 28-26 with 2:58 remaining.
Moravian would finish the half with a 10-2 run for a 26-30 halftime lead. After
the intermission, Drew would cut the lead to one point at 38-37 with 16:14
remaining in the game before Moravian slowly built a double-digit lead for the
final nine minutes of the game. Moravian made just 32.4 percent of its field
goal attempts (24 of 74) with five three pointers. The Greyhounds were 13 of 14
at the foul line (92.9 percent) while committing just 18 turnovers and holding
a 48-38 advantage on the boards. Moravian had three players in double figures
led by junior forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS), who
scored a game high 19 points to go with a career best 13 rebounds. Senior
forward Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem,
PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) contributed 12 points and four rebounds while
junior guard Katie Rizman (Wall, NJ/St.
Rose HS) added 11 points and four boards. Junior forward Jenny Hackleman (Solvang, CA/Rutgers Prep
{NJ} HS) had eight points, seven rebounds and two assists while sophomore
guard LaToya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) added
a career high seven points, four rebounds and two steals. Senior forward Lindsay Brase (Bethlehem,
PA/Notre Dame HS) had six rebounds and
five points while freshman forward Rachel
Elneus (Easton,
PA/Notre Dame HS) added four
points and a pair of rebounds.
The University
of Scranton, ranked tenth
in the nation in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, made four free throws in
the final 15 seconds to hold off 12th-ranked Moravian, 67-62, in
non-conference action in Johnston Hall.
The Greyhounds suffered their first loss of the 2005-06 campaign and the
first regular season loss in Johnston Hall since February 4, 2004, a span of 15
straight regular season wins. Scranton would score the
first two points of the game before Moravian ran off 15 straight points, taking
a 15-2 lead with 14:43 remaining in the first half. However, the Greyhounds, who came into the
contest shooting nearly 47 percent from the floor, went cold for the rest of
the half. The Royals put together an
18-4 run to take a 20-19 lead with 6:37 before the intermission, and Scranton continued to run
out to a 35-25 halftime lead. The Royals
forced the Greyhounds into 12 turnovers in the first 20 minutes and limited
Moravian to an eight of 28 performance from the floor
(28.6 percent). The Greyhounds also made
just seven of 12 free throws (58.3 percent) in the first half. Scranton
was 12 of 31 (38.7 percent from the floor in the first half) while shooting
eight of eight at the foul line.
Moravian did have a 22-19 advantage on the boards and forced the Royals
into nine turnovers. Scranton scored the first basket of the
second half to take its largest lead of the game of 12 points at 37-25.
Moravian would begin to crawl back into the game, closing within four points,
45-41, at 11:57 remaining in the game.
The Royals would get the lead back to eight points at 49-41, but the
Greyhounds wouldn’t go away, finally tying the contest at 55-55 with 5:12 to
play on a pair of free throws by Applegate. The score would be tied at 56-56 with 4:34
remaining and every time Scranton would get a two or three-point lead, Moravian
would bring it back to one point, the last time being at 63-62 with 17 seconds
left. A pair of free throws gave the
Royals a 65-62 lead with just 15 ticks left.
Seaman got an open look at
the three-pointer with just four seconds late but the shot was short and
Scranton connected on two more free throws with just one second left to seal
the victory. Applegate had her third straight double-double with a game-high 22
points and a career best 17 rebounds. Applegate, who came into the game
shooting 72.9 percent from the floor, was just seven of 14 from the field and
eight of 11 at the foul line in the game while dishing out three assists. Hackleman
added 19 points and eight rebounds.
Moravian shooting struggles continued in the second half, making just 17
of 58 field goal attempts in the game (29.3 percent). The Greyhounds were also 26 of 36 (72.2 percent)
from the foul line during the game and committed just seven turnovers in the
second half for a game total of 19. Seaman added 11 points and seven
rebounds while Rizman tossed in
seven points to go with four assists, three steals and two rebounds. Blake
snatched a game high four steals and had two points while sophomore guard Sara Steinman (Springfield, PA/Jonathan
Dayton HS) had four assists.
Moravian bounced back from its first loss of the
season to head into its three-week winter break on a 52-48 non-conference win
at Ursinus College. The point total was the lowest
of the season for the Greyhounds for the second consecutive contest. The Bears
jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Moravian got on the scoreboard with 18:01
remaining in the first half. The Greyhounds would eventually fight back to tie
the game at 16-16 with 11:43 remaining before the intermission. Moravian did
take an 18-17 lead with 7:31 left in the half but Ursinus went on a 7-3 run to
end the half with a 24-21 lead. The Greyhounds struggled from the field in the
first half, shooting just eight of 30 (26.7 percent) and committing 12
turnovers. Moravian quickly took a 25-24 lead in the first 36 seconds of the
second half, and the Greyhounds would lead the rest of the way including the
game's biggest lead of 15 points, 52-37, with 3:37 left. Moravian would shoot
better in the second half, making 13 of 27 field goal attempts (48.1 percent)
after the break. The Greyhounds had a 41-36 edge on the boards, and Moravian
forced Ursinus into 25 turnovers for the game while committing 24 of its own. Applegate led the Greyhounds in scoring
and rebounding again with 16 points and nine rebounds to go with two blocked
shots and two steals. Seaman was the
only other Moravian player in double figures with ten points to go along with
three rebounds and three assists. Rizman
tossed in seven points and had three assists and three steals while Hackleman added six points, five
rebounds and three assists. Brase
contributed five points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals while Steinman had three points and a pair of
rebounds. Junior guard Rachel Berlin (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS)

Heights HS) grabbed
five rebounds. Blake added three
rebounds and two steals while senior guard Dianna
DiFiore (Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph HS) grabbed
three rebounds. Elneus
contributed two points.
