The Greyhounds returned to action after a 29-day break
with an 85-50 win at Wilkes
University in
non-conference action. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Moravian.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 42-29 halftime lead after leading by as many as
19 points in the first 20 minutes. The Colonels cut the lead to nine points,
42-33, early in the second half, but Moravian then had a 19-3 run to take
control of the game with a 25-point lead with 12:41 to play. The Greyhounds had
three players in double figures led by freshman guard Amanda Brown (Schuylkill Haven,
PA/Schuylkill Haven HS) netting a career high 17 points, including five of
seven three-pointers to go with four assists. Senior forward Kelly Applegate (Easton,
PA/Wilson HS)
and freshman guard Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring
Harbor HS) each contributed
11 points and four rebounds. Applegate
is now tied for ninth in school history with 571 career rebounds. Freshman
guard Jessica Foran
(Annandale, NJ/Rutgers
Prep HS) had nine points for Moravian while freshman forward Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich,
NY/Oyster Bay
HS) added eight points, three rebounds and three steals. Freshman forward Alyssa Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS) netted
seven points to go with six rebounds and two steals while senior forward Jenny Hackleman (Arroyo Grande, CA/Rutgers
Prep {NJ} HS) had six points, six rebounds and five steals in the victory.
Junior guard Tina Moll (Kintnersville, PA/Palisades
HS) and freshman guard Alexis DiFazio (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park HS) each had five points and two
rebounds while junior guard Megan Kocon (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty
HS) added four points and three rebounds for the Greyhounds.
Moravian dropped a 71-67 non-conference decision to
William Paterson (NJ) University in the first round of the 6th Annual Starters
Moravian Winter Classic. This is the first time in the six-year history of the
tournament the Greyhounds will not be in the championship round while the
victory was the ninth straight this season for the Pioneers. William Paterson
jumped out to an 8-0 lead and would have an 11-point edge twice before heading
into the locker room with a 40-31 lead. The Greyhounds came out of the locker
room quickly with a 16-2 run to take a 47-42 lead with 14:11 remaining. The
Pioneers ran back to a 52-49 lead and were up 53-52 with 9:48 to play. William
Paterson then ran of six straight points to build a 59-52 edge. The Greyhounds
would eventually tie the contest at 62-62 with 3:15 remaining and trailed 66-64
with 40 seconds to play when the Pioneers connected on five of six free throws
to seal the win. Moravian had two players in double figures with 13 points from
Applegate and ten points by Foran. Applegate added three rebounds to move
into eighth in school history with 574, and she moved up to ninth in scoring
with 1,227. Hackleman moved into
sixth in school history with a team high eight rebounds to raise her career
total to 635, and Hackleman had six
points and tied a career high with six assists. Bisci tied her career high with eight points to go with four
rebounds while Brown had eight
points and three assists. Harrison
contributed eight points, three rebounds and three assists while junior guard La'Toya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff
HS) had six points and a game high five steals for Moravian. Stearns tossed in five points and
grabbed four rebounds.
The Greyhounds won the consolation game of the 6th Annual
STARTERS Moravian Winter Classic, defeating Lincoln (PA) University, 89-83. The
first half was close early with each team leading by no more than five points.
The Greyhounds finished the first 20 minutes with an 11-0 run to build a 46-33
advantage. Moravian kept its lead above nine points until the final minute of
the game. Moravian had three players in double figures led by Applegate with 22 points to go with
nine rebounds and four assists. Hackleman,
who was named to the All-Tournament Team, had a double-double with 19 points
and 12 rebounds while Stearns tossed
in a career high 18 points for the Greyhounds. Foran and Bisci each had eight points with Bisci contributing five rebounds and four assists. Brown added five points and four
assists for Moravian while Kocon had five points and two assists.

Moravian returned to action after its semester break with
an 80-61 victory over rival Muhlenberg
College in non-conference
action. The win snapped a two-game overall losing streak for Moravian and a
two-game losing streak to Muhlenberg. The Mules did have a pair of leads in the
first half with the final lead of 14-12 with 10:59 remaining before halftime.
The Greyhounds led by as many as eight points in the first half and went to the
locker room with a 31-28 advantage. With
15 minutes remaining in the contest, Moravian had just a 39-35 lead; however,
the Greyhounds put together a 31-11 run over the next nine minutes to build a
70-46 advantage. Moravian had two players in double figures led by junior guard
Ryan Miller (Easton,
PA/Easton
HS) with 13 points, and Miller
also had a team high six rebounds. Junior forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata HS) tossed
in 11 points for the Greyhounds while junior forward Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg HS) had
nine points, four steals and three rebounds. Junior forward Steve Wenderfer (Chester, NJ/Mendham HS),
senior forward Matt Devlin
(Sadsburyville, PA/Coatesville HS) and freshman guard Michael Zubia (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem
Catholic HS) each tossed in eight points for Moravian with Wenderfer and Devlin each grabbing four boards and Wenderfer adding four steals. Freshman forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) had six points and two
rebounds for the Greyhounds while junior guard Greg Jones (Bronx, NY/Mt. St.
Michael Academy)
contributed five points and three rebounds. Junior forward Chris Earley (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) had four points for
Moravian while senior guard Michael
Clemente (Toms River, NJ/Central Regional HS) had three points to go with a
game high five assists.
The Greyhounds defeated future conference rival Drew University,
87-50, in the first round of the 29th Annual Greyhound Starters Classic.
Moravian, which has won two straight games, now advances to play Montclair State University
in the championship game. The Greyhounds jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead but saw
the Rangers pull within one point at 13-12 with 10:50 before the intermission.
Moravian slowly built its lead the rest of the half and headed to the locker
room with a 38-21 edge. In the second half, the Greyhounds lead would reach as
many as 39 points, 81-42 with 5:43 remaining. The Greyhounds, which emptied the
bench for the second straight game, had just two players in double figures. Clemente led all scorers with a career
high tying 19 points, including a five-for-five performance behind the
three-point line, while Miller
tossed in 15 points to go with three rebounds. Wenderfer led Moravian on the boards with nine rebounds, and he
added nine points and three assists. Devlin
had eight points and five rebounds for the Greyhounds. Whitman and Earley each
tossed in eight points with Whitman
adding four rebounds and Earley
grabbing three boards. Weaver added
five points while Franzyshen,
junior guard Chris Bays (Hackettstown,
NJ/Pope John XXIII HS), senior guard Jeremy
Walker (Hellertown, PA/Freedom HS) and Jones
each scored three points. Franzyshen added four rebounds.
Moravian won its third straight game of the new year and captured its 12th tournament title, defeating
Montclair State University, 73-65, in the championship game of the 29th Annual
Greyhounds Starters Classic. The win also marked the 350th at Moravian for head
coach Jim Walker, who is 350-315 in 27 years at Moravian and 365-325 overall. The
Greyhounds are now 37-21 in the history of the tournament. Montclair State
led the entire first half except for a brief 2-2 tie. The Red Hawks largest
advantage would be 12 points, 28-16 with 7:46 until the intermission, and Montclair State had a 33-23 edge with 3:46 remaining.
Moravian finished the half with a 12-3 run capped by a lay-up by Miller just before the buzzer to go the
locker room trailing by just a point, 36-35. Early in the second half, Moravian
tied the game at 38-38; however, the Red Hawks built an eight-point lead,
53-45, with 12:25 remaining. The Greyhounds answered with an 11-4 run to pull
with 57-56 with 7:31 to play. After Montclair
State pushed the lead
back to six points, Moravian would eventually tie the game at 65-65 and then
take its first lead of the game, 66-65, on a pair of free throws by junior
forward Mark Franzyshen
with 1:40 remaining in the game. The Red Hawks had scored their 65th and final
point with 3:54 left in the second half on a free throw by Charles Miller. The
Greyhounds would make five free throws in the final 27 seconds to seal the
victory including two on Montclair
State's second technical
foul of the second half. The Greyhounds had five players in double figures led
by Franzyshen
with a game high 14 points. Franzyshen also had six rebounds. Miller tossed in 13 points to go with four rebounds and two assists
while being named to the All-Tournament Team. Whitman had 12 points and three rebounds for Moravian while Wenderfer and Earley each had ten points. Wenderfer,
the Tournament Most Valuable Player, fueled the late comeback with several
driving lay-ups and added three rebounds while Earley grabbed six boards to go with three assists and two steals. Weaver and Devlin each had five points for Moravian with Devlin adding three rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Clemente had four assists and two
points for the Greyhounds Jones
added three assists, two rebounds and two points.
