Women’s Basketball – 10-8 (Commonwealth Conference 4-4, MASCAC 7-5)

            Moravian nearly pulled off an upset in Commonwealth Conference action before falling to third-ranked Messiah College, 58-54, in a road conference game. The Greyhounds led most of the contest including heading into the locker room at halftime with a 27-17 advantage, but Moravian was unable to hold on in the end as the Falcons scored 41 second half points to earn the win. In the first half, the Greyhounds were 12 of 25 from the field (48.0 percent), one of two behind the three-point line and two-for-two at the foul line. Messiah struggled shooting the ball in the first half, making just eight of 28 field goal attempts, one of two free throws and missing all five of their three-pointers. Moravian had a 23-9 advantage in rebounds after the first 20 minutes; however, the Greyhounds had committed 11 turnovers to just six for the Falcons. Messiah would slowly get back into the game and eventually pulled ahead after shooting over 50 percent in the second half. The Falcons were 15 of 28 from the floor, two of four on three-pointers and nine of 12 at the foul line after the intermission while Moravian made just nine of 28 second half field goal attempts (32.1 percent) and nine of 14 free throws. The Greyhounds, who did not attempt a three-pointer after halftime, had a 37-27 advantage in rebounds for the game; however, Moravian committed 26 turnovers for the game while the Falcons had just 11 turnovers. Moravian had two players in double figures led by senior forward Jenny Hackleman (Arroyo Grande, CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS), who had a double-double with game highs of 17 points and ten rebounds. During the second half when Hackleman scored 15 of her 17 points, she became the 18th player in school history to score 1,000 career points, now with a total of 1,009. Hackleman is also sixth in school history with 686 rebounds. Hackleman also had three assists and a blocked shot in the game. Senior forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS) tossed in 15 points for Moravian to become the seventh player in school history to score 1,300 points, now with a total of 1,312 points. Applegate added six rebounds to raise her career total to 607, which is eighth in school history. During the second half, Applegate broke the school record for career free throw attempts, now with 538, and she is second all-time at Moravian in free throws made with 415, 13 shy of breaking the school record. Freshman guard Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor HS) had eight points and six rebounds for the Greyhounds while freshman guard Jessica Foran (Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS) had five points and five rebounds. Freshman forward Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay HS) contributed four points and four boards while freshman guard Amanda Brown (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven HS) had four assists and three points for the Greyhounds.

 

            The Greyhounds dropped their third straight road Commonwealth Conference game, falling to Juniata College, 81-69.  The Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Moravian ran off nine straight points for a 9-7 lead with 13:41 left in the first half. The Greyhounds final lead of the contest was 13-10 with 11:41 until the intermission. At the 7:41 mark of the first half, Juniata had a 24-19 lead; however, the Eagles used a 12-1 run over the next four and a half minutes to build a 36-20 lead with 3:13 left until halftime.  Juniata went to the locker room with a 43-30 lead. The Eagles were 15 of 29 from the floor, four of seven on three-pointers and nine of ten from the foul line in the first 20 minutes, and Juniata had an 18-12 advantage in rebounds while forcing Moravian into 14 turnovers and committing just ten. The Greyhounds connected on ten of 24 field goal attempts (41.7 percent), one of five three-pointers and nine of 12 free throws in the first half.  Juniata kept its lead in double digits until the final minute of the game, leading by as many as 17 points, 56-39 with 13:10 left to play. Moravian would get within eight points in the final minute before the Eagles connected on six straight free throws to finish the contest. In the second half, Juniata made 12 of 25 field goal attempts, three of eight three-pointers and 11 of 12 free throws while the Eagles finished the game with a 32-25 advantage in rebounds. Moravian was 14 of 25 from the field in the second half (56.0 percent), one for five behind the three-point line and ten of 15 at the foul line. Moravian also committed 26 turnovers in the contest.  The Greyhounds did have four players score in double figures led by Applegate with 15 points to go with two rebounds and two steals. Senior guard Katie Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) and Stearns each netted 11 points in the game with Rizman grabbing three rebounds and Stearns pulling down two boards.  Harrison (had ten points and three rebounds for Moravian while Hackleman had nine points and a team high seven rebounds to go with three assists and two steals. Foran contributed seven points, four rebounds and three steals while sophomore forward Rachelle Elneus (Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS) had four points. Brown had three assists and three rebounds for Moravian while being held scoreless.

            The Greyhounds ended the first half of the Commonwealth Conference schedule with a 70-50 loss at Messiah College. Moravian struggled in the first 20 minutes and went to the locker room trailing 37-17. The Greyhounds were just six of 24 from the field (25.0 percent), three of 14 on three-pointers and two of four at the foul line in the first half while the Falcons connected on 12 of 31 field goal attempts, six of 14 three-pointers and seven of ten free throws. Both squads had 20 rebounds in the first half; however, Moravian had ten turnovers to seven for the Falcons. Messiah would maintain its lead throughout the second half to finish the first half of the conference schedule undefeated. Moravian was 12 for 30 (40.0 percent) from the floor in the second half, two of 11 behind the three-point line and seven of nine at the foul line. The Falcons made 11 of 25 field goal attempts, five of 11 three-pointers and all six of their free throws in the second half. Messiah also finished the game with a 38-33 advantage in rebounds. Moravian did not have anyone reach double figures in the game with junior forwards Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg {PA} HS) and Chris Earley (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) each scoring a team high nine points and grabbing seven rebounds. Whitman added three steals. Junior guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) contributed eight points and three assists while junior forward Steve Wenderfer (Chester, NJ/Mendham HS) had seven points and three boards for the Greyhounds. Junior forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata HS) had six points and seven rebounds while freshman forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) had five points for Moravian.

 

            Moravian dropped its second straight Commonwealth Conference road game, falling to Juniata College 70-50.  The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead but the Greyhounds took the lead on a three-pointer and would lead by as many as six points twice, having a 14-6 advantage with 12:39 remaining in the first half. Juniata then went on a 15-2 run to take a 23-16 lead with 7:19 showing on the first half clock. Moravian did not score in the final two minutes of the first half as the Eagles went to the locker room with a 34-21 lead.  Juniata connected on 12 of 29 first half field goal attempts, three of nine three-pointers and all seven of its free throw attempts, and the Eagles had a 22-14 advantage on the boards in the first 20 minutes. The Greyhounds were eight for 26 from the field (30.8 percent), four for 13 behind the three-point line and one for three on free throws in the first half.  The closest Moravian would get in the second half was nine points on two occasions. The Eagles would have their largest lead of the game, 27 points, with 3:03 to play when Juniata took a 70-43 lead with its final point of the game. The Eagles were 13 of 26 from the floor, four of six on three-pointers and six of eight at the foul line in the second half while finishing the contest with a 36-31 advantage in rebounds. Moravian made eight of 24 field goal attempts (33.3 percent), one of ten three-pointers and 12 of 14 free throws in the second half.  The Greyhounds had two players in double figures led by Wenderfer with 14 points to go with six rebounds and three steals. Miller tossed in ten points while Whitman had five points and three rebounds.  Franzyshen and junior guard Greg Jones (Bronx, NY/Mount St. Michael Academy) each tossed in four points with Jones adding five boards. Earley had five rebounds and three points for Moravian.

Women’s Indoor Track & Field – 0-0 (Commonwealth Conference 0-0, MASCAC 0-0)

            Moravian placed sixth of nine schools at the 15th Annual John Covert Classic hosted by Lehigh University. The Greyhounds had a team score of 40 points and were the top non-NCAA Division I team in the meet won by the University of Delaware with 128 points. Moravian had one individual winner with freshman Christine Kihm (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown HS) capturing the pole vault with a school record height of 3.60 meters (11 feet, 9 3/4 inches), which provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships. The height was the fourth best in the nation this season as of the day of competition.

 

            The Greyhounds had six other competitors earn points at the meet with three individuals earning points in the triple jump. Freshman Jessica Posimo (Philadephhia, PA/St. Basil Academy) was second in the triple jump with a leap of 10.75 meters (35 feet, 3 1/4 inches) to earn eight points while senior Kathleen McCarron (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) earned four points for a fourth place finish with a distance of 10.62 meters (34 feet, 10 1/4 inches). Posimo also earned a point in the long jump with a sixth place after a leap of 5.12 meters (16 feet, 9 3/4 inches). Freshman Rachel Riggs (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg HS) was sixth in the triple jump at 10.20 meters (33 feet, 5 3/4 inches) to earn a point. Freshman Dana Haslett (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge HS) earned 12 points in two events, picking up eight points for a runner-up finish in the 60-meter dash in 7.90 seconds and earning four points for a fourth place showing in the 200-meter dash in 26.34 seconds. Freshman Rachel Beck (Churchville, PA/Council Rock South HS) earned six points for a third place in the 60-meter dash in 8.04 seconds while freshman Anna Heim (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS), who one-week old record Kihm broke in the pole vault, earned four points for placing fourth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.20 meters (ten feet, six inches).

 

            Moravian also picked up three points from its relay teams. The 4x400-meter relay squad of Haslett, Heim, senior Amy Reehil (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS) and freshman Kaitlyn Boyer (Oley, PA/Oley Valley HS) received two points for placing fifth in a time of 4:15.94 while the 4x800-meter relay squad of senior Jennifer Connolly (Weare, NH/Manchester West HS), junior Katie Pulizzano (Allentown, PA/William Allen HS) and sophomores Kayla Teeling (Milford, NJ/Phillipsburg HS) and Kelly Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) earned a point for a seventh place finish in 11:11.15.

 

            In the sprint races, Haslett had a time of 7.94 seconds and was in second place after the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash while Beck was fourth with a time of 8.08 seconds. Senior Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) was tenth in the preliminaries in 8.20 seconds while freshman Queenie Tang (Bedminster, NJ/Chatham HS) was 19th in 8.45 seconds, senior Suzanne Tamlyn (Wappingers Falls, NY/Wallkill HS) was 22nd at 8.49 seconds and freshman Cassidy Thomas (Arnold, MD/Broadneck HS) was 25th in 8.66 seconds. Beck finished seventh in the 200-meter dash in 27.08 seconds while Recker was 11th in 27.73 seconds, Tang was 19th in 28.64 seconds and Thomas finished 32nd in 30.22 seconds. Reehil led a quartet of runners in the 400-meter dash with a seventh place finish in a time of 1:03.33. Boyer was eighth in 1:03.41 while Tamlyn took 17th in a time of 1:06.09 and freshman Katelyn Chando (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) placed 21st in 1:08.16. Heim was seventh in the 500-meter dash in a time of 1:24.13. Posimo placed seventh in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles in 9.67 seconds.

 

            Pulizzano led Moravian in the distance races, placing seventh in the 5,000-meter run on 20:38.30. Teeling was 16th in the mile run in a time of 5:42.11 while Connolly took 27th in 5:56.33 and Williams placed 28th in 5:57.88.

 

            In the field events, Posimo was tied for 13th in the high jump at a height of 1.48 meters (four feet, 10 1/4 inches) while sophomore Thea Kennerknecht (Central Valley, NY/Monroe-Woodbury HS) was tied for eighth in the pole vault at a height of 2.90 meters (nine feet, 6 1/4 inches). McCarron took eighth in the long jump with a leap of 5.06 meters (16 feet, 7 1/4 inches) while Heim tied for ninth at 5.04 meters (16 feet, 6 1/2 inches). Riggs was 21st in the long jump with a leap of 4.46 meters (14 feet, 7 3/4 inches). Freshman Flora Robertson (Hawley, PA/East Stroudsburg North HS) placed 12th in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 11.05 meters (36 feet, three inches) while senior Tammy Balliet (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) finished 13th at 10.94 meters (35 feet, 10 3/4 inches).

            The Greyhounds placed fifth of 11 schools at the 15th Annual John Covert Classic hosted by Lehigh University. Moravian had a team score of 42 points and was the top non-NCAA Division I team in the meet won by the host Mountain Hawks with 131 points. Moravian had one individual winner with junior Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) capturing the 60-meter hurdles in a school record time of 8.24 seconds which provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships.

 

            Brown scored a total of 32 of Moravian's 42 points at the meet. In addition to the ten points he received for winning the 60-meter hurdles, Brown picked up eight points for a second place finish in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.84 seconds, eight points for a second place in the long jump with a leap of 6.98 meters (22 feet, 11 inches) and six points for placing third in the 60-meter dash in school record time of 7.08 seconds. Brown had a school record time of 7.10 seconds in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash, which was third in qualifying.

 

            Freshman Michael Blenk (Inwood, NY/Lawrence HS) earned four points for a fourth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.69 meters (21 feet, 11 1/2 inches) while junior Allan Fatzinger (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) earned two points for a fifth place in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.10 meters (13 feet, 5 1/4 inches). Sophomore Robert Shaffer (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville HS) picked up a point for a sixth place in the 200 meter dash in 23.60 seconds while sophomore Blair Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) earned a point for a sixth place finish in the shot put with a toss of 14.46 meters (47 feet, 5 1/4 inches). Moravian's final two points came from the 4x800-meter relay team of senior Josh Hunter (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton HS), freshman Steve Parisi (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) and sophomores Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) and Jeremiah Reinhart (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) with a fifth place finish in a time of 8:40.55.

 

            In other sprint results, Shaffer was 11th in the 60-meter dash in 7.24 seconds while junior James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) placed 14th in 7.30 seconds and senior Josh Kline (Reading, PA/Exeter HS) took 22nd in 7.53 seconds. Kline also placed tenth in the 200-meter dash in 24.07 seconds while sophomore Jared Henrie (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley HS) was 11th in the 400-meter dash in 54.87 seconds. Junior Vince Pagano (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East HS) placed 16th in the 400-meter dash in 57.36 seconds while freshman Nick Shubert (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East HS) was 17th in 57.53 seconds. Sophomore John McCullough (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan HS) finished 14th in the 500-meter dash in a time of 1:17.01. Blenk was eighth in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles in 8.91 seconds while Brown was first after the preliminaries with a school record time of 8.27 seconds. Moravian's 4x400-meter 'B' relay team of Vince Pagano, Henrie, Shubert and sophomore Stephen Mulchay (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) was ninth in 3:47.59.

 

            Hunter led the Greyhounds in the distance races with a ninth place finish in the mile run with a time of 4:37.89 while freshman Steve DeFazio (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) placed 19th in the event in 4:57.97. Parisi took 12th in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:05.42 while Reinhart was 17th in 2:08.77. Junior Timothy Pagano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West HS) was tenth in the 3,000-meter run in 9:29.89 while senior Anthony Sarno (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township HS) took 11th in the 5,000-meter race in 17:26.52.

 

            In the field events, sophomore Alan Woods (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff HS) placed ninth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.95 meters (12 feet, 11 1/2 inches). In the 35-pound weight throw, freshman Ronald Draina (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen HS) placed 13th with a toss of 11.89 meters (39 feet, 1/4 inch) while Maginnis was 17th at 11.23 meters (36 feet, 10 1/4 inches) and senior Steve Kondorossy (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery HS) placed 19th at 10.83 meters (35 feet, 6 1/2 inches).
