The Greyhounds won their second straight game to remain
in sole possession of third place in the Commonwealth Conference, defeating
Lebanon Valley College, 64-50. The victory was Moravian's second on the road
this season in nine games. Moravian jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, and the
Greyhounds led most of the first half. There were four ties in the first 20
minutes, and the Flying Dutchmen had just one lead, 21-20 with 2:53 to play.
Moravian's largest lead of the first half was six points on two occasions, 14-8
and 18-12. The Greyhounds went to the locker room with a 28-25 advantage after
shooting nine of 24 (37.5 percent) from the floor, two of nine behind the
three-point line and eight of ten at the foul line. Moravian started the second
half with a 19-3 run to take a 47-28 lead with 13:55 remaining in the game. The
Greyhounds would keep their lead in double digits the rest of the way as the
team shot 11 of 28 (39.3 percent) from the floor, two-for-two behind the
three-point line and 12 of 15 at the foul line. Moravian had two players in
double figures led by senior forward Kelly
Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS) with a
game a game high 17 points. Applegate,
who moved into sixth all-time in school history with 1,390 career points, added
seven rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Jenny Hackleman (Arroyo Grande, CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS)
added 14 points, a game high nine rebounds, two assists and two steals for the
Greyhounds. Freshman guard Jessica Foran (Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS) tossed
in nine points to go with a career high six steals and a career best four
assists. Senior guard Kristina Adams
(Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery HS), freshman guard Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor
HS) and freshmen forwards Alyssa
Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay HS) all scored five points in the Moravian
victory.
Moravian won its third straight game and upset top-ranked
Messiah College, 66-59, in Commonwealth Conference action in Johnston Hall as
the Greyhounds clinch their sixth straight trip to the Commonwealth Conference
Tournament. The Falcons entered the game in the top spot of the D3hoops.com Top
25 Poll for the second straight week and on a 19-game winning streak. The win
was Moravian's third straight regular season win at home against the Falcons.
The game was tight early with neither team leading by more than two points and
there were seven ties in the first 12 and a half
minutes. With Messiah holding a 14-13 lead, Moravian ran off nine consecutive
points to take a 22-14 lead with 5:08 remaining in the first half. The
Greyhounds eventually pushed the lead to double digits at 27-16 with 3:05 until
the intermission, but the Falcons rallied with eight straight points to cut the
Moravian lead to 27-24 with 1:47 left in the first half. The Greyhounds scored
to push the lead to five points but the Falcons scored with 1:09 to cut the
lead back to three points and send the game to the locker room with Moravian
leading 29-26. The Greyhounds were 12 of 30 from the field (40.0 percent) in
the first 20 minutes, five of eight at the foul line and missed both of their
three-pointers. Moravian had a 24-9 advantage in rebounds in the first half,
including 11-1 on the offensive boards; however, the Greyhounds had 13 first
half turnovers to 11 for the Falcons. The game would remain close in the early
part of the second half as well with Messiah eventually taking a 32-31 lead
with 16:30 to go. The Falcons would push their lead to five points, 42-37 with
13:29 remaining before a 6-0 run by the Greyhounds gave Moravian the lead back
at 43-42 on a driving lay-up by Foran. Messiah retook the lead briefly before the Greyhounds
had a 50-47 edge with 8:21 to play after a jumper by Applegate. Messiah posted a 7-1 run to take a 54-41 lead with 4:20
remaining. Moravian would eventually retake the lead on its only three-pointer
of the game by freshman guard Amanda
Brown (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven
HS) with 3:00 remaining for a 56-54 lead. The would be the Greyhounds final
field goal of the contest; however, Moravian, ranked sixth in the nation in
free throw percentage, made ten of 12 free throws in the final 2:10. Messiah
tied the contest at 56-56 with 2:31 left on the clock, the 12th tie of the
contest, before the Greyhounds won the game at the foul line. Moravian was ten
of 24 (41.7 percent) from the field in the second half, one for two on
three-pointers and 16 of 20 at the foul line. The Greyhounds finished the game
with a 46-26 advantage in rebounds including a 16-7 edge on the offensive
boards. The Greyhounds had three players in double figures led by Applegate, who had a team high 17
points to go with eight rebounds. Applegate
became the sixth player in school history to reach 1,400 career points, now
with 1,407, and she is eighth in school history with 645 rebounds. Harrison
tossed in a career high 16 points for Moravian, including four of six at the
foul line in the final two minutes. Harrison added three rebounds. Hackleman had a double-double for the Greyhounds with
a game high 14 rebounds to go with 12 points, three steals and two
assists. Hackleman moved into fourth
all-time in rebounds with 746 for her career and she is 14th in scoring now
with 1,081 points. Sophomore forward Cody
Fedorishen (Nazareth, PA/Allentown
Central Catholic HS) tossed in a career high nine points for Moravian,
including seven in the first half, to go with four rebounds. Brown added seven points and four
assists for the Greyhounds while Foran had six rebounds, four points and two steals. Bisci grabbed three rebounds in the
victory.

The Greyhounds dropped a 71-64 decision at Lebanon Valley College
in Commonwealth Conference action. The loss, Moravian's fifth straight,
virtually eliminates Moravian from reaching the Commonwealth Conference
postseason tournament. The Flying Dutchmen jumped out to a 7-0 lead and slowly
pushed the lead into double digits. Lebanon
Valley's largest lead on
17 points, 38-21, came with 1:32 remaining in the first half. The Flying
Dutchmen went to the locker room with a 38-25 advantage after shooting 16 of 36
from the floor, five of 12 behind the three-point line and one of three at the
foul line in the first 20 minutes of the game. Lebanon Valley
also had a 22-19 advantage in rebounds and committed just seven first half
turnovers to ten for the Greyhounds. Moravian was 11 of 28 from the floor (39.3
percent), one of ten on three-pointers and two of four from the field in the
first half. Lebanon
Valley maintained its
double-digit lead until the midway point of the second half when the Greyhounds
began to close the gap. Moravian would eventually get within five points,
67-62, with just over one minute left in the contest before Lebanon Valley
put the game away at the free throw line. The Greyhounds made 13 of 30 field
goal attempts (43.3 percent), seven of 12 three-pointers and six of nine free
throws in the second half. Lebanon
Valley made 12 of 28
field goal attempts, two of eight three-pointers and seven of 14 free throws
after the intermission. Both teams finished the game with 40 rebounds. Moravian
had three players in double figures led by junior forward Chris Earley (Brielle,
NJ/Manasquan HS), who scored
a career high 17 points to go with six rebounds and two assists. Junior guard Ryan Miller (Easton,
PA/Easton HS)
tossed in 14 points and had five rebounds while junior forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata
HS) contributed ten points and a team high nine rebounds for the
Greyhounds. Junior forward Steve
Wenderfer (Chester, NJ/Mendham
HS) added six points and six rebounds while junior forward Eric Whitman (Blairstown,
NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg {PA} HS) and
freshman forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury
HS) each had five points and three boards. Junior guard Greg Jones (Bronx,
NY/Mt.
St. Michael
Academy) added four points for
Moravian while senior guard Michael
Clemente (Toms River, NJ/Central Regional HS) had
three points and three assists.
Moravian suffered its sixth straight loss in its final
home game of the season, falling to Messiah College, 79-47, in Commonwealth
Conference action in Johnston Hall. The loss eliminates the Greyhounds for a
possible berth in the postseason. After a 2-2 tie, the Falcons jumped out to an
8-2 lead and never looked back. Messiah pushed the lead into double digits at
20-10 with 6:39 remaining in the first half. The Falcons went to the locker
room with a 29-19 lead after shooting 13 of 26 from the field and three of
seven behind the three-point line. Messiah, which did not attempt a free throw
in the first half, also had a 17-15 edge in rebounds after the first 20
minutes. The Greyhounds struggled shooting the ball in the first half, going
six of 22 from the floor (27.3 percent), missing all five three-point attempts
and making seven of ten free throws. Messiah continued to stretch its lead in
the second half with 50 points after the intermission. The Falcons' lead
eventually reached 30 points in the final three minutes of the contest. Messiah
shot even better in the second half, making 16 of 26 field goal attempts, seven
of ten three-pointers and 11 of 14 free throws. The Falcons also had a 37-26
advantage in rebounds for the game. Moravian was nine of 28 from the floor
(32.1 percent), one of eight on three-pointers and nine of 12 at the foul line
in the second half. The Greyhounds did not have anyone reach double figures in
the game with four players, Wenderfer,
Franzyshen,
Whitman and Jones, each scoring six points. Franzyshen had a team high six
rebounds while Wenderfer grabbed
four boards. Senior guard Jeremy Walker
(Bethlehem, PA/Freedom
HS) and Weaver each tossed in
five points for Moravian while senior forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville,
PA/Coatesville HS) and Miller each had four points. Devlin contributed dive rebounds while Weaver made three steals for the
Greyhounds.

Moravian had one individual champion at the non-scoring Lafayette College-Rider University Invitational competed
at the 168th Street
Armory in New York City.
Freshman Christine Kihm
(Quakertown, PA/Quakertown HS) tied her own school record winning the pole
vault, clearing a height of 3.60 meters (11 feet, 9 3/4 inches). Freshman Anna Heim (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS)
was second in the event with a career best vault of 3.45 meters (11 feet, 3 3/4
inches), which improves on her NCAA Division III provisional qualifying height.
Moravian had four other top five finishes with freshman Dana Haslett (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge
HS) taking second in the 200-meter dash in school record time of 25.38
seconds, nearly a full second faster than the previous school mark. Haslett also finished third in the
60-meter dash in 7.95 seconds while senior Erin
Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) took fifth in 8.03
seconds. Freshman Jessica Posimo (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy)
was fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 10.90 meters (35 feet, 9
1/4 inches).
In other sprint results, freshman Rachel Beck (Churchville, PA/Council Rock South HS) was tenth in the 60-meter
dash in 8.12 seconds while senior Kathleen
McCarron (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth
HS) was 16th in 8.31 seconds. Senior Amy
Reehil (Roselle, NJ/Roselle
Catholic HS) posted a time of 26.62 seconds in the 200-meter dash to place
13th while Beck was 14th in 26.70
seconds, Recker finished 24th at
27.24 seconds and McCarron
was 35th in a time of 27.89 seconds. Reehil also placed 17th in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.27
while freshman Kaitlyn Boyer (Oley, PA/Oley Valley
HS) was 25th at 1:02.38. Posimo was ninth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.50 seconds.
Moravian had just two distance runners compete with
junior Katie Pulizzano
(Allentown, PA/William
Allen HS) finishing 21st in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 11:29.76 and
sophomore Kelly Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) taking 22nd at 11:30.86. Freshman Rebeka Woolley (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant
Boro HS) was ninth in the shot put with a toss of 11.09 meters (36 feet, 4
3/4 inches) in the Greyhounds only throwing event.
Sophomore Thea Kennerknecht (Central Valley, NY/Monroe-Woodbury HS) was
tied for ninth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 2.85 meters (nine feet,
4 1/4 inches) while Posimo
was tied for 18th in the high jump at a height of 1.45 meters (four feet, nine
inches). Moravian had three competitors in the long jump with McCarron placing
11th at 5.07 meters (16 feet, 7 3/4 inches), Posimo finishing 14th at 5.00
meters (16 feet, five inches) and freshman Rachel
Riggs (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg HS) taking 27th at 4.42 meters (14 feet,
six inches). McCarron
was also tenth in the triple jump with a distance of 10.44 meters (34 feet, three
inches) while Riggs placed 16th at
10.20 meters (33 feet, 5 3/4 inches).

The Greyhounds competed at the non-scoring Lafayette
College-Rider University Invitational hosted at the 168th Street Armory in New York City. Junior Ozzie Brown (Plymouth
Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) set a pair of
school records to lead the Greyhounds. Brown
set a new school mark in the 200-meter dash while placing fourth in a time of
22.21 seconds, taking over four-tenths of a second off the previous mark. Brown bettered his own school mark in
the 60-meter dash by two-hundredths of a second, finishing fifth in 7.06
seconds. In his other two events, Brown
was second in the long jump with a leap of 6.98 meters (22 feet, 11 inches) and
fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.30 seconds.
In the sprint races, sophomore Robert Shaffer (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville
HS) placed 12th in the 60-meter dash in 7.19 seconds, and he was 17th in
the 200-meter dash in 22.86 seconds. Senior Josh Kline (Reading, PA/Exeter HS) finished
17th in the 400-meter dash in a time of 52.19 seconds, and he was 25th in the
200-meter dash in 23.56 seconds. Sophomore Jared
Henrie (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell
Valley HS) placed
34th in the 400-meter dash in 53.70 seconds.
Senior Josh Hunter
(Palmerton, PA/Palmerton
HS) placed 28th in the mile run in a time of 4:32.20 while freshman Steve DeFazio (Branchburg,
NJ/Somerville HS) was 39th in 4:48.90 and
senior Anthony Sarno
(Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township
HS) took 40th in a time of 4:51.51. Freshman Steve Parisi (Kunkletown,
PA/Pleasant
Valley HS) finished 22nd in the
1,000-meter run in a time of 2:40.61 while junior Timothy Pagano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West HS)
placed 33rd in the 3,000-meter run in 9:18.51. The Greyhounds 4x800-meter relay
team of Hunter, Parisi, sophomore Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem,
PA/Bethlehem
Catholic HS) and junior Khizer Tariq (Bethlehem, PA/Saucon Valley HS) placed 12th in a
time of 8:30.64.
In field events, sophomore Blair Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren
Hills Regional HS)
was 12th in the shot put with a toss of 13.94 meters (45 feet, nine inches) and
12th in the 35-pound weight throw with a distance of 12.44 meters (40 feet, 9
3/4 inches). Sophomore Alan Woods (Mechanicsburg,
PA/Cedar Cliff HS) was 13th in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.90
meters (12 feet, 9 1/2 inches) while junior Allan Fatzinger (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) was 15th with a
height of 3.75 meters (12 feet, 3 1/2 inches).
