Greyhound Weekly Update, February 19, 2007 (-2222-)

 

Women’s Basketball – 15-10 (Commonwealth Conference 9-5, MASCAC 12-6)

            Moravian extended its winning streak to four straight games with a 77-55 victory at Widener University in Commonwealth Conference action. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, February 13th but was postponed twice due to weather before finally being played. The Pride took a 2-0 lead and the game was tied at 4-4 before Moravian took the lead for good on a three-pointer by freshman guard Amanda Brown (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven HS). The Greyhounds would lead by as many as 13 points in the first half before going to the locker room with a 32-21 lead. Moravian was 13 of 28 from the field (46.4 percent), two of four behind the three-point line and four of five at the foul line in the first 20 minutes. The Greyhounds came out in the second half and slowly extended the lead to as many as 31 points, 74-43 with 4:46 remaining. Moravian used all 17 players in uniform for the game with everyone seeing at least four minutes of action. The Greyhounds were 19 of 30 (63.3 percent) on their field goal attempts in the second half, one of five on three-pointers and six of eight at the foul line in the second half. Moravian finished the game with a 40-37 edge in rebounds. The Greyhounds had three players in double figures led by senior forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS), who tossed in a game high 16 points to go with six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Brown finished with 14 points, four assists and four boards while freshman forward Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay HS) had 13 points and a team high seven rebounds for the Greyhounds. Senior forward Jenny Hackleman (Arroyo Grande, CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS) and freshman guard Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor HS) each scored eight points with Hackleman adding five rebounds and five assists. Freshman forward Alyssa Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS) scored six points for Moravian to go with three rebounds while freshman guard Jessica Foran (Annandale, PA/Rutgers Prep HS) tossed in four points. Sophomore forward Cody Fedorishen (Nazareth, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) had three points and four rebounds while freshman guard Alexis DiFazio (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park HS) tossed in three points. Junior guard La'Toya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) added three assists for Moravian.

 

            Moravian closed out the 2006-07 regular season with a 101-85 win at Elizabethtown College in the Greyhounds' final Commonwealth Conference game. The last time Moravian scored at least 100 points was on January 24, 2005, a 100-86 win at Muhlenberg College. Against Elizabethtown, the Greyhounds scored first and the game was tied at 2-2 before Moravian took control. The Greyhounds slowly pulled away and put the lead into double digits including a 28-point lead, 43-15, with 5:59 remaining in the first half after jumper by Harrison. Moravian would go to the locker room with a 50-27 halftime lead. Moravian shot 20 of 38 from the floor (52.6 percent) in the first 20 minutes, and the Greyhounds made ten of 12 free throws in the first half. Moravian, which missed all five of its three-pointers in the first half, had a 23-12 advantage on the boards in the first half while committing just six turnovers. The Greyhounds came out of the locker room and extended their lead to 30 points on three occasions, the final time at 71-41 after a three-pointer by senior guard Katie Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) with 13:36 to play. With the Greyhounds playing all 17 players in uniform for the second straight game and no Moravian players seeing more than 23 minutes of action, Elizabethtown would eventually get the lead back under 20 points in the final minutes. Moravian continued to shot the ball well in the second half, making 16 of 31 field goal attempts (51.6 percent), three of four three-pointers and 16 of 22 free throws in the final 20 minutes. The Greyhounds also finished the contest with a 50-25 advantage in rebounds while both teams had 21 turnovers for the game. Moravian had 12 players score with four in double figures. Applegate led the Greyhounds with 18 points to go with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Hackleman had 15 points, a game high nine rebounds and three assists for the Greyhounds while Stearns tossed in 14 points and added three rebounds and three assists off the bench. Hackleman became the 14th player in school history to reach 1,100 career points, now with 1,104. Brown had 13 points, four assists, three steals and two boards for Moravian while Foran added nine points and five rebounds in the victory. Harrison finished with eight points while Bisci and Fedorishen each tossed in seven points. Bisci added five rebounds while Rizman had five boards to go with three points. Blake grabbed four rebounds for Moravian.

            The Greyhounds snapped their six-game losing streak with a 108-102 triple-overtime victory at Widener University. The last time Moravian scored over 100 points was a 105-93 triple-overtime win at Juniata College on February 4, 2004. Moravian trailed the Pride 41-27 at halftime. The score was tied at 3-3 before Widener took the lead for the remainder of the half. The Greyhounds were ten of 24 (41.7 percent) from the field in the first 20 minutes, one for ten on three-pointers and six of 11 at the foul line. Widener came out of the locker room and maintained its lead for the first six minutes of the second half. The Pride led 49-34 with 13:47 when the Greyhounds went on a 19-3 run to take a 53-52 lead on a free throw by junior guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) with 7:37 remaining on the clock. Moravian eventually built a six-point lead, 64-58 with 3:41 to play before Widener came back. The Pride tied the score at 65-65 and then again at 67-67 before Moravian took a 71-67 lead with just 28 seconds to play. The Greyhounds still led, 73-70 in the final seconds before Widener hit a three-pointer with three seconds to tie the game at 73-73 and send the contest to overtime. Moravian was 11 of 25 from the floor (44.0 percent) in the second half, five of nine on three-pointers and 19 of 24 at the foul line. In the first overtime, the Greyhounds had an early lead and were up 82-79 with 1:50 remaining before Widener came back and took an 84-82 lead. Moravian tied the contest with 29 seconds remaining in the first overtime on a pair of free throws by junior forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata HS). The Pride had a shot to win the game at the end of the first extra five minutes but missed. In the second overtime, the Greyhounds again took an early lead, up 90-86 with 3:21 to play. Widener again fought back and eventually took a 93-92 lead with 59 seconds left in the second overtime. Moravian freshman forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) hit one of two free throws with 30 second on the clock to tie the game at 93-93. The Pride would attempt a pair of three-pointers in the final five seconds trying for the Widener win but missed both shots. The Greyhounds came out and dominated the third overtime early on, scoring seven points in the first 1:13 and taking a 104-95 lead on a free throw by Weaver with 1:04 left on the clock to seal the win. Moravian was eight of 16 from the floor, two of three on three-pointers and 17 of 24 at the foul line in the three overtime periods. Moravian did finish the game with a 52-38 advantage in rebounds. The Greyhounds had five players in double figures led by Franzyshen with a career high 29 points to go with four rebounds. Junior forward Steve Wenderfer (Chester, NJ/Mendham HS) contributed 20 points and nine boards while senior guard Michael Clemente (Toms River, NJ/Central Regional HS) netted 16 points including five in the third overtime to go with five rebounds. Miller tossed in 13 points with career high eight rebounds and three steals while Weaver scored 12 points and grabbed a career best and game high 13 rebounds and three steals. Junior forward Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg {PA} HS) had nine points, four rebounds and three assists for the Greyhounds while senior forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville, PA/Coatesville HS) had five points and three steals. Junior guard Greg Jones (Bronx, NY/Mt. St. Michael Academy) contributed four points, three assists and three rebounds in the Moravian win.

 

            Moravian closed out its 2006-07 season with an 88-69 loss at Elizabethtown College in the team's final game as a member of the Commonwealth Conference. The Greyhounds had an early 10-6 lead before Elizabethtown began to pull away. The Blue Jays posted a 37-22 halftime advantage. The Greyhounds connected on just seven of 19 first half field goal attempts (46.8 percent), two of nine three-pointers and all six of their free throw attempts in the first half. Both teams shot over 62 percent in the second half with Elizabethtown extending its lead. Moravian made 16 of 25 field goal attempts (64.0 percent), five of 13 three-pointers and ten of 13 free throw attempts. Elizabethtown had a 29-25 edge in rebounds in the game while forcing the Greyhounds into 31 turnovers. The Blue Jays had just 14 turnovers in the contest. Moravian had three players in double figures led by Whitman with 15 points. Whitman also grabbed a team high eight rebounds. Miller contributed 13 points for the Greyhounds while Wenderfer added 11 points. Franzyshen had eight points for Moravian while Clemente had seven points and four assists in his final collegiate game. Weaver tossed in five points to go with four rebounds and two assists while Devlin had four rebounds and two blocked shots. Senior forward David Heller (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh HS) netted three points in his final game while junior guard Chris Bays (Hackettstown, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) also had three points for the Greyhounds.

This Week – Sat., Feb. 24th at 2007 Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships hosted by Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, PA, 10:00 a.m.

 

            The Greyhounds had just four competitors at the non-scoring Keogh Invitational hosted by Haverford College as Moravian prepares for the 2007 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. Sophomore Kayla Teeling (Milford, NJ/Phillipsburg HS) led the quartet with a fourth place finish in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:26.68. Senior Suzanne Tamlyn (Wappingers Falls, NY/Wallkill HS) was 14th in the 800-meter run in 2:38.13 while senior Jennifer Connolly (Weare, NH/Manchester West HS) placed 23rd in a time of 2:45.44. Freshman Cassidy Thomas (Arnold, MD/Broadneck HS) placed tenth in the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.98 seconds, and she was 16th in the 200-meter dash in 29.94 seconds.

This Week – Sat., Feb. 24th at 2007 Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships hosted by Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, PA, 10:00 a.m.

 

            Moravian sent ten competitors to the non-scoring Keogh Invitational hosted by Haverford College as the team prepares for the 2007 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. Junior James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) led the Greyhounds with a fourth place finish in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.78 seconds, and he was sixth in the 55-meter dash in 6.78 seconds. Junior Khizer Tariq (Bethlehem, PA/Saucon Valley HS) was ninth in the 400-meter dash in 55.44 seconds while freshman Nick Shubert (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East HS) placed 11th in 56.91 seconds.

 

            Freshman Steve DeFazio (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) led a trio of Moravian runners in the mile run with a time of 4:45.45, which placed him 19th. Senior Anthony Sarno (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township HS) was 25th in 4:55.92 while freshman Timothy Betz (Havertown, PA/Haverford HS) was 35th in a time of 5:05.15. In the 800-meter run, freshman Steve Parisi (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) placed eighth in a time of 2:03.47 while sophomore Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) was 11th in 2:04.47. Sophomore Jeremiah Reinhart (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) took 15th in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:06.22 while DeFazio was 26th in 2:10.76 and sophomore John McCullough (Levittown, PA/Conwell Egan HS) took 33rd in a time of 2:15.54.

            The Greyhounds begin their 2007 season on Saturday, February 24th in a non-conference home match versus Ursinus College beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Rocco Calvo Field.
