Greyhound Weekly Update, March 26, 2007 (-2222-)

 

Softball – 9-3 (Commonwealth Conference 2-0, MASCAC 2-0)

            Moravian began its final season in the Commonwealth Conference with a doubleheader sweep of Juniata College, 4-1 and 7-0, at Blue & Grey Field in the team’s first home action of the season. Juniata took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the first game.  The Greyhounds, ranked 12th in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Top 25 Poll, would tie the game in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore first baseman Sheri Bieniek (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley HS) led off with a walk and moved to second on a walk to senior outfielder Justina Black (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS). Sophomore designated player Maria DeBonis (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS) had a sacrifice bunt to move Bieniek to third before junior third baseman Kelly Santry (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland HS) hit an RBI infield single to score Bieniek. Moravian would take the lead in the bottom of the third inning with junior second baseman Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) connected on an RBI single to score sophomore outfielder Erica Klepeisz (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS), who had led off the inning with a single. The Greyhounds added a run on the fourth inning on an RBI infield single by sophomore shortstop Jordan Oplinger (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) that scored Santry from second base. Moravian's final run came in the bottom of the sixth inning on another RBI single by Oplinger, this time scoring junior pinch hitter Megan Ritchey (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown HS), who was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Moravian had just eight hits in the game with two each by Santry and Oplinger. Sophomore Kristie Pellicani (Sparta, NJ/Sparta HS) improved to 6-1 in the circle for Moravian, allowing an unearned run on two hits and a walk while striking out nine batters.

 

            In the second game, DeBonis tossed a four-hit shutout for Moravian to improve to 3-2 on the season. DeBonis, who has two shutouts this season, allowed one walk and struck out a career high 12 batters in the victory. DeBonis would get all of the offense she needed in the bottom of the first inning. Oplinger reached on an error before singles by senior outfielder Lauren Homa (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) and Paly loaded the bases. Bieniek then connected on a grand slam to give the Greyhounds a 4-0 lead. The homer was Bieniek's second of the season. Moravian would get three more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Homa had an RBI single to score senior designated player Rebecca DeJulio (Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart HS) then Paly followed with a two-RBI single that scored Oplinger and Homa. Moravian had seven hits in the game with two each by Homa and Paly.

 

 

 

Men’s Tennis – 4-2 (Commonwealth Conference 0-1, MASCAC 1-1)

            The Greyhounds won their second straight home match with a 5-4 non-conference victory over FDU-Florham. The match was started outside at Hoffman Courts but was moved indoors to Breidegam Fieldhouse during singles competition due to a light rain. Moravian led 2-1 after doubles play with an 8-4 win by the team of freshman Ian Box (Charlestown, MA/The Rivers School) and senior Neil Caniga (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees HS) and an 8-3 victory by the sophomore duo of Keith Feinman (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield HS) and Jeremiah Reinhart (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley HS). The Greyhounds would capture three singles match to earn the win. Box won at first singles, 6-4, 6-2 while Caniga captured a 6-1, 6-2 win at second singles. Reinhart dropped the first set of his sixth singles match 6-7 (0-7) but rallied to win the final two sets, 6-2, 6-2 to earn Moravian its third straight victory overall.

 

            Moravian had its three-match winning streak, falling to Elizabethtown College, 5-4, in the 2007 Commonwealth Conference opener for each school. The Greyhounds trailed 2-1 after doubles action with just one win from the duo of Caniga and Box, 8-3, at first doubles. In singles action, Caniga won at second singles, 6-1, 6-3, while Feinman earned a victory at fourth singles, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, and Reinhart won at sixth singles, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

            Playing for the first time in 12 days, Moravian began the 2007 Commonwealth Conference season with a 9-6 victory at Widener University. The win was the first for Greyhound first-year head coach Paul Engelhardt in his first career conference contest. Moravian improves to 4-5 overall with its second straight win.  The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman designated hitter David Lengyel (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) was hit by a pitch with one out and stole second base. Sophomore outfielder Joseph Durso (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brother Academy) the hit a two-out RBI single to score Lengyel. The Pride would score twice in the bottom of the second inning for a 2-1 lead. Moravian would retake the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning with a pair of runs. Durso hit a one-out double and scored on an RBI double by senior catcher Colin Welles (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere HS). Sophomore first baseman Christopher Rue (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel HS) followed with an RBI single to score Welles with the go-ahead run. The Greyhounds would score five times in the top of the eighth inning for an 8-2 lead. Senior shortstop Pete Moore (Bogota, NJ/Bogota HS) led off the inning with double, the 27th of his career which tied the school record. After Durso singled, Welles hit an RBI single to score Moore. Rue laid down a sacrifice bunt before sophomore third baseman Kevin Gambrino (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan HS) hit a two-RBI single to plate Durso and Welles. Freshman pinch hitter/second baseman Michael Zubia (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) scored on a Widener error after reaching on a fielder's choice, and Lengyel finished off the inning with an RBI single to score sophomore outfielder Eric Shea (Madison, NJ/Morristown Beard HS), who had reached on an infield single. Widener scored three times in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull within 8-5. Moravian would then add an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning when Moore led off the inning with a triple and scored on an RBI single by Durso. The Pride scored once in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull within three runs at 9-6, and Widener had the bases loaded when freshman pitcher Keith Shaffer (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale HS) struck out the final batter of the game. Moravian had 15 hits in the game with Durso and Welles each going four-for-five with two runs and two RBI. Shea and Moore each had two hits with Moore raising his school record career total to 138. Junior Trevor Lawrence (Lansford, PA/Marian Catholic HS) improved to 2-0 on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts in seven innings of action. Freshman Ryan Cummings (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East HS) tossed one inning, allowing three runs, just one earned, on two hits and two walks. Shaffer pitched the final inning of the game, giving up a run on four hits before striking out the final batter.

 

            The Greyhounds swept their 2007 home opener under first-year head coach Paul Englehardt, defeating Susquehanna University, 5-1 and 3-1, in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Gillespie Field.  The wins improve Moravian’s record under Englehardt to 6-5, eclipsing the win total for the entire 2006 season.  Moravian is also riding a four-game winning streak with the sweep, the Greyhounds’ first four-game winning streak since the 2002 season.  The last time Moravian won five straight was back in 1994.  The Greyhounds are also undefeated in Commonwealth Conference action at 3-0. In the first game, the Crusaders would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Greyhounds answered with a run in the bottom half of the first. Moore tripled with two outs and then scored on an RBI single by Durso. Moravian would take the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning with two runs. Rue led off the inning with a single and would move to second on an infield single by freshman outfielder Andrew DeLio (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany HS). Junior second baseman Brett Stout (Easton, PA/Easton HS) hit a fly ball to move Rue to third then Shea connected on an RBI single to score Rue. Lengyel followed with another RBI single to score DeLio. The Greyhounds added a run in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by DeLio, which scored Welles, who had walked with one out. Moravian's final run came in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Moore that scored Shea, who had an infield single to lead off the inning. The hit was the 140th of Moore's career, a school record, and it also gave him 215 total bases, tying the school mark. Moravian had 13 hits in the game but left ten runners on base. DeLio was three-for-three with an RBI while Shea and Moore were each two-for-four with RBIs. Sophomore first baseman Matthew McCarthy (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) was two-for-three for the Greyhounds. Junior Matthew Swartz (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore HS) picked up his first win of the season on the mound for Moravian, tossing a complete game with six hits, two walks, two strikeouts and one earned run.

 

            In the second game, Moravian would score all three runs freshman pitcher Christopher Morrison (Middlesex, NJ/Immaculata HS) needed in the bottom of the third inning. Welles led off the inning with a double and Rue was hit by a pitch. McCarthy followed with a sacrifice bunt before junior second baseman John Bisco (Easton, PA/Notre Dame HS) hit a two-RBI double to score Welles and Rue. Gambrino then hit an RBI single to score Bisco with what ended up being an insurance run for Moravian. Susquehanna scored its lone run on the top of the third inning. Morrison allowed just the one run, three hits and a walk in the game. He improved to 2-0 on the year, and had seven strikeouts in the victory. Moravian had just six hits in the game with Shea collecting three of them along with a pair of stolen bases.

Men’s Lacrosse – 0-6 (MAC 0-1)

            Moravian dropped a 15-6 decision to rival Muhlenberg College in a non-conference match at Rocco Calvo Field. The Mules jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter and led 5-0 before the Greyhounds scored two straight goals. Muhlenberg would add four more goals to hold a 9-2 lead at the intermission. The Mules, who led 13-3 after three quarters, had a 42-32 advantage in shots and a 39-35 edge in ground balls during the match. Moravian won 16 of 25 face-offs with senior midfielder T.J. Hirsch (Putnum Valley, NY/Walter Panas HS) winning 13 of 20 face-offs for the Greyhounds. The Mules were four-for-six on extra-man opportunities while the Greyhounds were just two-for-ten with a man advantage. Hirsch and senior midfielder Ken Blom  (Rochelle Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic HS) each scored twice for Moravian with sophomore attack Keith Danner (Laurys Station, PA/Parkland HS) and freshman midfielder Kevin Smart (Drexel Hill, PA/Archbishop Carroll HS) each finding the back of the cage once. Sophomore attack Jason Tosches (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South HS) had an assist for Moravian while sophomore goalie Benjamin Larson (Dover, DE/Dover HS) stopped 11 shots in 57 minutes of action. Hirsch had a team high ten ground balls for the Greyhounds while Larson scooped up six ground balls.

 

            The Greyhounds began the 2007 Middle Atlantic Conference season with a 9-7 loss at the University of Scranton. Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 lead but the score was tied 2-2 after the first quarter. The Royals found the back of the net three times in the second quarter to head to the intermission with a 5-3 lead, and Scranton extended its lead to 7-3 after three quarters. Moravian scored four of the six goals in the final quarter including two in the final 1:10 of the contest. The Greyhounds had a 32-27 advantage in shots, a 43-39 edge in ground balls and won 14 of 20 face-offs in the match. Danner led Moravian with a hat trick while senior attack Daniel Larson (Dover, DE/Dover HS) had two goals. Hirsch added a goal and an assist while winning 14 of 20 face-offs and having a game high 11 ground balls. Freshman midfielder Cruz Sierra (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional HS) added a goal and an assist for the Greyhounds while Blom had two assists. Benjamin Larson made ten saves for Moravian to go with five ground balls.

 

 

Women’s Lacrosse – 0-4 (MAC 0-2)

            Moravian dropped its first Middle Atlantic Conference match of the 2007 season, falling to Susquehanna University, 16-11, in a match played at Rocco Calvo Field due to poor field conditions on the HUB Quad. The Crusaders jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first 8:20 of the match before Moravian cut the score to 6-3. Susquehanna went into the intermission with an 11-4 lead. Moravian would cut into the lead twice in the second half, eventually pulling within three goals at 14-11 with just under 12 minutes remaining on the clock. However, Susquehanna scored the final two goals to claim the win. The Crusaders had a 37-30 advantage in shots and a 15-14 edge in draw controls while both teams had 31 ground balls. Senior attack Lindsey Lustrino (Spring Lake, NJ/Manasquan HS) led the Greyhounds with five goals to increase her school record career totals to 124 goals and 136 points. Freshman attack Jillian Pagliei (Ivyland, PA/Council Rock North HS) netted her first career hat trick and also had an assist for Moravian while junior midfielder Erica Spatz (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken HS), sophomore attack Georgia Castellano (Cherry Hills, NJ/Cherry Hills West HS) and freshman attack Kayla Carson (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing HS) each found the back of the cage once. Spatz led the Greyhounds with eight ground balls while freshman midfielder Lynda Kauffman (Boothwyn, PA/Chichester HS) had four ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers for Moravian. Freshman keeper Katie Wise (Ardsley, PA/Abington HS) had a career high 17 saves in goal for Moravian while adding two ground balls.

 

            The Greyhounds fell to Elizabethtown College, 15-2, in a Middle Atlantic Conference match played at Rocco Calvo Field due to field conditions on the HUB Quad. The Blue Jays lead 11-0 at halftime and had a 14-0 advantage before Moravian scored on a free position shot by Kauffman with just under six minutes remaining in the match. Elizabethtown had a 32-21 advantage in shots and a 24-20 edge in ground balls while the Greyhounds had an 11-8 advantage on draw controls.  Kauffman scored both goals for Moravian, connecting on an unassisted goal with just under two minutes on the clock. Spatz and junior midfielder Robyn Klem (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) each had four ground balls for Moravian while Lustrino had team highs of three draw controls and three caused turnovers. Wise made seven saves and had three ground balls for the Greyhounds.

            Moravian began its 2007 outdoor season at the non-scoring Lehigh Valley Championships hosted by Muhlenberg College in a light rainfall. The Greyhounds had five individual champions and one relay team finish first at the meet. Freshman Dana Haslett (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge HS) won a pair of events, capturing the 100-meter dash in 21.55 seconds and winning the 200-meter dash in 25.71 seconds. Freshman Anna Heim (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS) tied the school record while winning the pole vault at a height of 3.20 meters (ten feet, six inches). Freshman Jessica Posimo (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) was first in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.68 seconds while freshman Rebeka Woolley (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro HS) won the javelin with a toss of 36.60 meters (120 feet, 1 1/4 inches). Moravian's 4x100-meter relay team of Haslett, freshman Rachel Beck (Churchville, PA/Council Rock South HS) and seniors Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) and Amy Reehil (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS) met the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 48.80 seconds while winning the race.

 

            The Greyhounds had seven other runners in the 100-meter dash behind Haslett with Recker placing second in 12.76 second, Reehil in seventh at 13.02 seconds, Beck at eighth in 13.18 seconds, senior Kathleen McCarron (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) in 12th place with a time of 13.44 seconds, Posimo in 15th at 13.56 seconds, freshman Rachel Riggs (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg HS) placing 17th in 13.85 seconds and sophomore Christine Kihm (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown HS) finishing 19th at 13.97 seconds. Moravian also had six other runners behind Haslett in the 200-meter dash with Beck placing seventh in 27.15 seconds, freshman Kaitlin Boyer (Oley, PA/Oley Valley HS) in eighth at 27.39 seconds, senior Suzanne Tamlyn (Wappingers Falls, NY/Wallkill HS) taking 13th in 28.14 seconds, McCarron finishing 15th in 28.17 seconds, Posimo in 17th with a time of 28.26 seconds and freshman Cassidy Thomas (Arnold, MD/Broadneck HS) placing 24th in 29.94 seconds. Boyer was second in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:02.81 while Tamlyn was fifth in 1:04.10. Heim was second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:08.26, and she placed 11th in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.69 seconds. Reehil was third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.86 while freshman Katelyn Chando (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) finished ninth at 1:13.19.

 

            In the distance races, sophomore Kayla Teeling (Milford, NJ/Phillipsburg HS) took second in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:01.73 while senior Jennifer Connolly was 14th in 2:37.82 and sophomore Naomie Kachel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) was 16th at 2:57.13. Kachel did place eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 13:55.80. Junior Katie Pulizzano (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) was seventh in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:53.08 while sophomore Kelly Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) finished eighth in 20:00.28.

 

            Posimo was third in the long jump with a leap of 5.16 meters (16 feet, 11 1/4 inches) while Heim took fourth at 5.07 meters (16 feet, 7 3/4 inches), McCarron placed seventh at 4.93 meters (16 feet, 2 1/4 inches) and Riggs finished 12th at 4.58 meters (15 feet, 1/2 inch). Freshman Aliina Ross (Paoli, PA/Conestoga HS) was fifth behind Woolley in the javelin with a toss of 32.00 meters (105 feet) while freshman Flora Robertson (Hawley, PA/East Stroudsburg North HS) placed sixth at 29.60 meters (97 feet, 1 1/2 inches). Robertson was also seventh in the discus with a toss of 27.42 meters (89 feet, 11 3/4 inches), and she was fourth in the shot put at 9.57 meters (31 feet, 4 3/4 inches). Heim placed eighth in the shot put with a toss of 7.90 meters (25 feet, 11 inches) while Thomas was ninth at 7.55 meters (24 feet, 9 1/4 inches). Senior Tammy Balliet (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) took second in the hammer throw with a toss of 34.32 meters (112 feet, 7 1/2 inches) while Robertson was third at 33.59 meters (110 feet, 2 3/4 inches).

            Moravian began its 2007 season at the Lehigh Valley Championships, a non-scoring meet, hosted by Muhlenberg College. The Greyhounds had three individual champions and one relay squad earn a first place finish in the meet hosted in a light rain. Junior Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) was first in the 110-meter high hurdles in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 14.88 seconds, and Brown also won the long jump with a leap of 6.93 meters (22 feet, nine inches). Sophomore Robert Shaffer (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville HS) captured the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.97 seconds, just edging out Brown, who was second in 10.98 seconds. Brown and Shaffer combined with junior James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) and senior Josh Kline (Reading, PA/Exeter HS) to win the 4x100-meter dash in 42.44 seconds.

 

            Bell finished fifth in the 100-meter dash in 11.34 seconds while sophomore Alan Woods (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff HS) was 13th at 12.51 seconds. Shaffer placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.81 seconds while Kline was fifth in 23.40 seconds and Bell was sixth at 23.51 seconds. Kline placed third in the 400-meter dash in 51.10 seconds while junior Allan Fatzinger (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) was 11th in 55.71 seconds. Sophomore Jared Henrie (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley HS) finished tenth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.59 while junior Vince Pagano (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East HS) was 14th in the event with a time of 1:05.69.

 

            In the distance events, freshman Steve Parisi (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) was ninth in the 800-meter run in 2:01.73 while sophomore Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) was 14th in 2:04.16 and freshman Nick Shubert placed 20th in a time of 2:12.06. Freshman Steven DeFazio (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) was 15th in the 1,500-meter run in 4:18.53 while sophomore John McCullough (Levittown, PA/Conwell Egan HS) placed 27th for the Greyhounds in a time of 5:03.41. Senior Anthony Sarno (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township HS) was 16th in the 5,000-meter run in 16:49.23 while freshman Timothy Betz (Havertown, PA/Haverford HS) took 17th in 18:06.03. Moravian's 4x400-meter relay squad of Murphy, DeFazio, Shubert and Parisi placed eighth in a time of 3:35.50.

 

            Sophomore Justin Starcher (Greentown, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) led the Greyhounds in the throwing events with a second place in the javelin after a toss of 48.00 meters (157 feet, six inches). Senior Michael Ossont (Archbald, PA/Valley View HS) took third in the javelin at 47.00 meters (154 feet, 2 3/4 inches) while sophomore Michael Ientile (Manchester, NJ/Manchester Township HS) was fifth at 44.04 meters (144 feet, 6 1/4 inches). In the shot put, sophomore Blair Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) was third at 14.40 meters (47 feet, three inches) while junior Nathaniel Dutile (Plymouth, ME/Nokomis HS) was fourth at 14.9 meters (46 feet, 10 3/4 inches), Brown placed tenth at 12.17 meters (39 feet, 11 1/4 inches) and freshman Michael Blenk (Inwood, NY/Lawrence HS) took 18th at 8.65 meters (28 feet, 4 1/2 inches). Dutile also placed seventh in the discus with a toss of 38.23 meters (125 feet, 5 1/2 inches) while senior Steve Kondorossy (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery HS) was 11th at 34.53 meters (113 feet, 3 3/4 inches), freshman Ronald Draina (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen HS) finished 12th at 33.94 meters (111 feet, 4 1/2 inches) and freshman Matthew Wisotsky (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North HS) placed 15th with a toss of 29.39 meters (96 feet, 5 1/4 inches). Kondorossy was seventh in the hammer throw with a toss of 37.97 meters (124 feet, 7 1/4 inches) while Maginnis placed 11th at 32.93 meters (108 feet, 3/4 inch) and Draina was 12th at 31.97 meters (104 feet, 11 inches).
