Moravian had its six-game winning streak snapped as
Greyhounds fell to DeSales
University, 12-11 in ten
innings, in a non-conference contest. The loss also snapped a 25-game winning
streak against the Bulldogs. The only other time Moravian lost to DeSales was
the first time the two schools met on April 22, 1980 when then Allentown
College of St. Francis DeSales defeated the Greyhounds, 13-0. Moravian took a
1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when sophomore first baseman Sheri Bieniek
(Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional HS) hit an RBI single that scored
sophomore shortstop Jordan Oplinger (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS), who had singled
to lead off the game. The Bulldogs answered with five runs in the bottom of the
first inning with all five runs coming with two outs. Moravian starting pitcher
Kristie Pellicani
(Sparta, NJ/Sparta HS) was relieved by sophomore Katie Agnew (Doylestown,
PA/Lansdale
Catholic HS) during the inning. Moravian scored twice in the top of the
second inning on an error that allowed senior outfielder Justina Black (Orefield, PA/Parkland
HS) to score and an RBI ground out by sophomore outfielder Erica Klepeisz (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) that scored senior catcher Danielle Carrione
(Bloomfield, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic HS).
The Greyhounds eventually took the lead with three runs in the top of the
fourth inning for a 6-5 advantage. Junior second baseman Beth Paly (Whitehall,
PA/Whitehall
HS), Bieniek
and sophomore designated player Maria DeBonis (Nazareth,
PA/Notre Dame HS) each had
RBI doubles in the inning. Moravian's lead wouldn't last long as DeSales scored
four times in the bottom half of the fourth inning to retake a 9-6 lead, and
again all four runs were scored with two outs. Moravian pulled within 9-8 in
the top of the sixth inning with a pair of runs. The Greyhounds scored on an
RBI single by freshman pinch hitter Kelly
Maressa (Allentown,
PA/William Allen HS) and an
RBI double by DeBonis.
Moravian scored a run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Paly to tie the
score at 9-9 and force extra innings. The game went to the international tiebreaker
of placing a runner at second base to start the inning in the top of the eight,
and the Greyhounds would take a 10-9 lead on an RBI single by DeBonis.
However, DeSales also scored in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score once
again at 10-10. In the top of the ninth inning, Moravian pushed a run across
the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly by Oplinger. However, the Bulldogs once again scored in the
bottom half of the inning to tie the contest at 11-11. Moravian started the
tenth inning with Klepeisz
at second base but a pair of line outs and a pop fly didn't allow Klepeisz to move
up. DeSales finally ended the game in the bottom of the tenth inning on a
suicide squeeze bunt. Moravian pounded out 17 hits in the game, its highest
single game total of the year, with Paly going four-for-six with a pair of doubles. Carrione and DeBonis were
each three-for-four for the Greyhounds while Bieniek was three-for-six. Oplinger had a
pair of hits and added three runs. Pellicani, who re-entered the game to pitch the tenth inning dropped to 8-2 on the season, allowing six runs, five
of them earned, on five hits and three walks with one strikeout in just one
inning of work. Agnew, who was
seeing her first action of the season, allowed six runs, four of them earned,
on five hits and four walks with nine strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings.
The Greyhounds bounced back from their first loss in
nearly a month to shut out DeSales, 9-0 in five innings, in the second game of
a non-conference doubleheader. DeBonis tossed her fourth shutout of the season for
Moravian, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out six batters. DeBonis received all of the
offense she would need in the top of the third inning when Moravian scored four
runs. Paly
scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch before Maressa hit a two-RBI double. Maressa scored
the final run of the inning on a passed ball. The Greyhounds added five runs in
the top of the fifth inning to institute the NCAA's
eight-run rule. DeBonis
drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly before junior outfielder Megan Ritchey (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown
HS) hit an RBI double. Agnew had
a two-RBI single during the inning while freshman outfielder Chrissy McGlinn (Lansdale, PA/Gwynedd Mercy HS) drove in the final run of the game with
an RBI double. Moravian had ten hits in the victory with sophomore catcher Deanna Mangieri (Pleasantville, NY/Byram Hills HS) going three-for-three.
The eighth-ranked Greyhounds swept a non-conference
doubleheader from future Landmark Conference foe Drew University,
1-0 and 12-0 in five innings, at Blue & Grey Field. The Greyhounds scored the first game’s only run in the bottom of the first inning. Junior
third baseman Kelly Santry
(Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland HS) drew a bases loaded walk,
Moravian's fourth base on balls of the inning, to score Paly, who had reached on an
infield single. The Greyhounds had just three hits in the game. Pellicani improved
to 9-2 in the circle for Moravian, allowing five hits and four walks while
striking out six batters for her fourth shutout of the season. In the second
game, DeBonis improved to 7-2 in the circle with her
fifth shutout of the season. DeBonis allowed just one hit and two walks while striking
out 11 batters. The Greyhounds would give DeBonis a 7-0 lead in the bottom
of the first inning. Oplinger led off the inning reaching third on
an outfield error, and she scored on a wild pitch. After a walk by Klepeisz and an out, Bieniek connected on her third home run of the season, a two-run shot to
right field. Mangieri and senior outfielder Lauren Homa
(Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) each had RBI singles before Oplinger drove
in the final two runs of the inning with a two-RBI double. The Greyhounds would
add three more runs in the bottom of the second inning to extend the lead to
10-0. Ritchey had an RBI single
while freshman Danielle Massa (Livingston, NJ/Livingston
HS) scored on a passed ball and Maressa crossed
the plate on a wild pitch. Moravian scored twice in the bottom of the fourth
inning on an RBI single by freshman shortstop Jackie Seidler (Feasterville, PA/Mt. St. Joseph HS) and another wild pitch. The game
was ended after five innings due to the NCAA’s
eight-run rule. Moravian had ten hits in the game with ten different players
getting a hit.

Moravian split a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader
with Widener University, losing the first game, 2-1,
and winning the second game, 6-1, to snap a six-game losing streak, at
Gillespie Field. The Pride jumped out to
a 1-0 lead in the first game in the top of the first inning. Moravian tied the contest at 1-1 in the
bottom of the second inning when senior catcher Colin Welles (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere HS) drew a one-out walk and
eventually scored on a two-out, RBI single by sophomore first baseman Matthew McCarthy (Allentown, PA/Allentown
Central Catholic HS), the Greyhounds' first hit of the game. Moravian
loaded the bases in the fourth inning but was unable to score. Widener scored
the winning run in the top of the fifth inning. The Greyhounds were limited to
three hits in the game. Freshman Keith
Shaffer (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale HS) took the loss on the
mound for Moravian, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk in 4 1/2 innings.
Freshman Andrew DelRossi

despite Widener having the bases loaded in the first inning on walks. The Pride
eventually took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Moravian pushed five runs across the plate in
the bottom half of the inning on just one hit to take a 5-1 lead. With one out,

Sophomore third baseman Kevin Gambrino (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan HS) drew a walk

bases again then junior outfielder Josh Baltz (Easton, PA/Easton

followed with a ground ball that looked to be a double play but an errant throw
from second allowed Lengyel
and Shea to score. Moravian would
add a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman catcher Brad Bodine (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS), who had
come into the game in the top of the second inning to replace Welles who was injured, singled to lead
off the inning. Hettinger drew a
walk and sacrifice bunt by sophomore first baseman Christopher Rue (Holmdel,
NJ/Holmdel HS) moved Bodine and Hettinger to second and third. Gambrino
followed with a ground ball to second base; however, the throw home pulled the
catcher off the plate and allowed Bodine to avoid the tag and score. The Greyhounds had just
four hits in the game with one by Moore, which
was the 150th of his career. Moore also set
the school mark for career at-bats in the game, now at 430. Freshman Ryan Cummings (Toms River, NJ/Toms River
East HS) improved to 2-2 on the mound for Moravian, allowing a run, four
hits and four walks, all in the first inning, while striking out five batters.

inning. Albright extended its lead to 5-0 with four more runs in the bottom of
the second inning. Moravian would score its first run of the game in the top of

Stout (Easton, PA/Easton HS) doubled
with two outs and scored on an error in the outfield on a ball hit by Shea. The Lions scored their final five
runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 10-1 lead. The Greyhounds finished off the scoring with
a run in the top of the eighth inning Moore hit an RBI ground out to score Hettinger, who drew a walk to lead off
the inning as a pinch hitter. Moravian was limited to three hits in the game, Stout's double and singles by Baltz and freshman designated hitter Andrew DeLio

inning. Albright extended its lead to
5-1 in the top of the third inning. Moravian answered with another run in the
bottom of the third inning on an RBI ground out by Baltz that scored Stout. Stout had doubled to lead off the
inning, and the hit ended up being Moravian's only extra-base hit in the
doubleheader. The Greyhounds pulled within 5-3 with a run in the bottom of the
sixth inning when Moore
singled with one out and eventually scored on a throwing error. Albright
scored three times in the top of the seventh inning to push its lead to 8-3.
