Softball – 32-5 (Commonwealth Conference 13-1, MASCAC 19-2)

Last Week – Defeated ^Messiah College, 3-2; Defeated ^Elizabethtown College, 2-0; Defeated ^Messiah College, 5-0.  ^Commonwealth Conference Tournament game

This Week – Thurs., May 10th vs. winner of #4 Ramapo College of New Jersey vs. #5 Gettysburg College at NCAA Division III Regional hosted by Montclair State University, 4:00 p.m.

Top seeded Moravian moved one win away from a seventh consecutive Commonwealth Conference Tournament Championship with a pair of victories on the first day of the 2007 Commonwealth Conference Tournament hosted by Lebanon Valley College.  The Greyhounds topped fourth seeded Messiah College, 3-2, in the first game of the tournament to move into the winner’s bracket game.  Moravian then defeated second seeded Elizabethtown College, 2-0, to advance to the championship game.  In the game against Messiah, the Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning without a hit. Moravian sophomore pitcher Maria DeBonis (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS) allowed two walks and a pair of fielder's choices before hitting a Messiah player with a pitch while the bases were loaded.  The Greyhounds didn't wait long to tie the score as senior first baseman Lauren Homa (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) connected on her first home run of the season, a solo shot down the left field line. Moravian would strand a runner at second in the third inning and runners at second and third in the fourth inning while Messiah put a runner on second in the second inning.  The Greyhounds would score twice in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs. Homa drew a walk to bring junior shortstop Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) to the plate. Paly then connected on a two-run home run to left field, her fifth homer of the season, to give the Greyhounds a 3-1 lead.  Messiah got one run back in the top of the sixth inning on a solo homer. Moravian had seven hits in the contest by seven different players.  DeBonis improved to 16-2 in the circle, allowing two runs on two hits, four walks and two hit batters. She did strikeout six batters in the game.

In Moravian’s second game, Greyhound sophomore pitcher Kristie Pellicani (Sparta, NJ/Sparta HS) tossed a one-hit shutout against the Blue Jays, allowing just a lead-off hit to Elizabethtown in the top of the first inning. Pellicani did walk five batters while striking out six Blue Jays.  Moravian would score its first run in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore outfielder Jordan Oplinger (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) led off the inning with an infield single. Sophomore outfielder Erica Klepeisz (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) then attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt to move Oplinger to second base but the throw to first base by Elizabethtown's first baseman sailed into right field, allowing Oplinger to come all the way around to score.  The Greyhounds added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior third baseman Kelly Santry (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland HS) led of the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore catcher Deanna Mangieri (Pleasantville, NY/Byram Hills HS). After another out, sophomore second baseman Katie Agnew (Doylestown, PA/Lansdale Catholic HS) hit an RBI single down the left field line to score Santry. Moravian had six hits in the game including two by Paly.

Moravian won its seventh straight Commonwealth Conference Tournament Championship, defeating fourth seed Messiah College, 5-0, in the title game at Lebanon Valley College.  The Greyhounds, ranked tenth in the nation, earn their tenth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament with the win.  Pellicani was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after tossing a four-hit shutout, her seventh shutout of the season and second of the Commonwealth Tournament. Pellicani allowed just one walk and stuck out five batters to improve to 16-3 on the season in the circle.  The Greyhounds would give Pellicani all the offense she needed in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore second baseman Katie Agnew (Doylestown, PA/Lansdale Catholic HS) led off the inning with a single to right field. Oplinger then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Agnew over to second base. However, the throw to first base sailed wide and after a collision between Oplinger and the Messiah second baseman covering first base, the ball ended up down in the right field bullpen with Agnew coming all the way around to score. Moravian extended its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a one-out, solo home run by Mangieri. The homer was Mangieri's second of the season.  The Greyhounds added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Oplinger led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Klepeisz then hit an RBI single down the right field line.  Moravian finished off the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run, pinch hit home run by sophomore Sheri Bieniek (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley HS) that scored Mangieri, who had doubled. The homer was Bieniek's fourth of the season and Moravian's 14th in its last nine games. The Greyhounds finished with six hits including two by Mangieri.
