College, 6-2; Defeated ^Montclair State University,
9-2 & 8-2. ^NCAA Division III Montclair Regional game
This Week – Fri., May 18th vs. #4 DePauw
(IN) University at NCAA Division III World Series in Salem, Virginia, 1:30 p.m.
Top seeded Moravian won its opening game at the 2007
NCAA Division III Regional being hosted by Montclair
State University
with a 6-2 victory over fifth seed Gettysburg
College. Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the
bottom of the first inning against Gettysburg.
Sophomore outfielder Erica Klepeisz
(Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) led off with an infield single and moved to
second on a sacrifice bunt by senior outfielder Lauren Homa (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS). Junior shortstop Beth Paly (Whitehall,
PA/Whitehall
HS) then delivered an RBI triple down the right field line to score Klepeisz. Paly would score on a dropped fly ball in the Bullet outfield with
two outs. The Greyhounds extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third
inning. Sophomore pitcher Maria DeBonis
(Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS) led off the inning
with a single through the left side of the infield. After a sacrifice bunt by
junior third baseman Kelly Santry
(Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland HS) and an infield single by sophomore
designated player Deanna Mangieri
(Pleasantville, NY/Byram Hills HS), Moravian
pulled off a double steal with Mangieri
getting into an intentional run down to allow DeBonis to score. The Bullets would get a run in the top of the
fourth inning to cut Moravian's lead to 3-1. Gettysburg would pull within a run in the top
of the sixth inning. Moravian scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the
sixth inning to build a 6-2 lead. Homa
started the rally with a two-out double. Paly
then hit a pop fly that fell in behind second base for an RBI single scoring Homa. DeBonis followed with a two-run home run to right field to finish
off the scoring. The homer was DeBonis'
third of the season, and the Greyhounds' 15th home run on their last ten games.
Moravian finished with ten hits including two each by DeBonis, Paly and Klepeisz. Klepeisz's second hit, a single
up the middle in the fourth inning was the 100th hit of her Moravian career,
and she is the 24th player in school history to reach the 100-hit plateau. Gettysburg had just six
hits with Miller going three-for-three. DeBonis
improved to 17-2 in the circle on the year for the Greyhounds. She allowed one
walk in addition to the six hits and two earned runs while striking out four
batters.
The Greyhounds used the long ball again to advance to
the regional championship game for the fifth straight year as Moravian topped
second seed and host Montclair
State University,
9-2. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0
lead in the top of the third inning. Sophomore second baseman Katie Agnew (Doylestown, PA/Lansdale
Catholic HS) led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt
by sophomore outfielder Jordan Oplinger
(Allentown, PA/Parkland HS). After another out, Homa singled up the middle to score Agnew. Moravian would make its lead 2-0 in the top of the fourth
inning when DeBonis led off the
inning with a solo home run to left field, DeBonis'
second homer of the tournament and fourth of the season. The Greyhounds would
extend their lead to 6-0 in the top of the fifth inning. Klepeisz doubled with one out and Homa followed with a bunt single. After a pop out, DeBonis drew a walk to lead the bases. Santry made the Red Hawks pay for the DeBonis walk, drilling the ball over
the left center for her second grand slam of the season. The home run was
Moravian's 17th in its last 11 games. Montclair State
would get a run in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Red Hawks pulled
within 6-2 in the sixth inning. Moravian would score the final three runs in
the top of the seventh inning. DeBonis
and Santry each drew two-out walks. Mangieri hit a single to centerfield to
score DeBonis before sophomore first
baseman Sheri Bieniek (Lumberton,
NJ/Rancocas
Valley HS) hit a two
run double to straight away centerfield. Bieniek's hit just missed
clearing the eight-foot fence. The Greyhounds finished with ten hits with two
each by Klepeisz, Homa and Santry. Sophomore pitcher Kristie
Pellicani (Sparta, NJ/Sparta HS) improved to 17-3 in the circle for
Moravian, allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out
six batters.
Moravian advanced to the NCAA Division III World
Series for the second time in four seasons with an 8-2 victory over second seed
and host Montclair
State University
in the championship game of the NCAA Division III Regionals.
The Greyhounds will play DePauw University the winner of the New Concord, Ohio
Regional on Friday, May 18th at 1:30 p.m. in the second game of the 2007 NCAA
Division III World Series at the James Moyer Complex in Salem, Virginia.
Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Klepeisz led off the inning with a
single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Homa. Paly followed with
a single to put runners on the corners. DeBonis
hit an RBI single up the middle to score Klepeisz. Junior third baseman Kelly
Santry singled to load the bases before Mangieri hit an RBI single through the right side to score Paly. However, the Greyhounds would leave
the bases loaded in the inning. The Red Hawks scored a run in the top of the
second inning to cut Moravian's lead in half. Moravian would push six runs
across the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning for an 8-1 lead. Senior
catcher Danielle Carrione
(Bloomfield, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic HS) led off with a single and
freshman Katie Flood (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville
HS) came into pinch run for Carrione. Agnew laid
down a sacrifice bunt to move Flood
to second, and Klepeisz drew a walk.
Homa hit a single to load the bases
before Paly hit an RBI ground out
scoring Flood. DeBonis followed with a two-RBI double to right center field that
just missed being her third home run of the tournament. Santry drew a walk before Mangieri
hit a flare to center field that scored DeBonis.
On the throw home, Mangieri ran to
second base, and the throw allowed Santry
to come all the way around in score. Bieniek
singled to bring Carrione
back to the plate. Carrione
hit an RBI single to left field to score Mangieri.
The hit was the 100th of Carrione's career, the 25th player in Moravian history to
reach 100 career hits. Montclair
State scored the final
run in the top of the fifth inning. Moravian had 15 hits in the game with DeBonis and Klepeisz each collecting three hits. Carrione, Bieniek and Mangieri
each had two hits for the Greyhounds. DeBonis
improved to 18-2 in the circle for Moravian, allowing two runs, just one
earned, on four hits and three walks while striking out ten batters.
