Moravian
opened its 2006 season with a pair of wins at the 4th Annual Greyhound
Premiere Invitational in Timothy Breidegam Fieldhouse. Moravian opened the
tournament with a 30-17, 30-23, 30-22 victory over Alvernia College
in the first match. Junior middle hitter
Jenna Wallace (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) paced the Greyhounds with 13
kills and two service aces while senior outside hitter Kelly Bauer (Hellertown,
PA/Notre Dame HS) contributed
eight kills and six digs. Senior setter Valerie
Korsak (Coplay, PA/Whitehall HS) led the
Greyhounds with 29 assists and 11 digs to go with four kills while junior
outside hitter Rachel Radocha (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) added
six kills and two blocks. Junior middle hitter Katherine Perkins (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton HS) had five kills and
three blocks for Moravian while sophomore outside hitter Maria DeBonis (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS)
had five kills, five digs and two service aces. Sophomore
setter Stephanie Struble
(Hampton, NJ/Voorhees
HS) added six digs and a pair of service aces.
The Greyhounds advanced to the championship bracket with
a 30-18, 30-11, 30-20 victory over Rowan (NJ) University. Wallace led Moravian with 13 kills while Bauer and DeBonis
each had ten kills. Bauer added five
digs while DeBonis
had three service aces. Korsak
had 30 assists while sophomore setter Elisa
Molchany (North Catasauqua,
PA/Catasauqua HS) added 12 assists and two kills. Radocha had six kills and three digs for the Greyhounds while
freshman middle hitter Alison Whitaker (Millis, MA/Millis
HS) contributed four kills. Senior defensive specialist Ashley Hugo (Bath,
PA/Northampton
HS) had six digs while junior defensive specialist Elise Martin (Emmaus,
PA/Emmaus HS) and Struble each
added five digs.
Moravian split a pair of matches in the championship
bracket of the 4th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational. Moravian won its first match in the
championship bracket, defeating rival Muhlenberg College,
31-29, 30-16, 30-27. The Greyhounds trailed by as many as four points in the
third game before rallying for the win. Bauer
paced Moravian with 16 kills, ten digs and two service aces while Wallace had ten kills and two blocks. Korsak, who was
named to the All-Tournament Team, controlled
the Greyhound offense with 34 assists to go with 13 digs, three kills and two
service aces while Radocha added nine
kills and four digs. DeBonis had five kills and five digs while Perkins added four kills. Struble contributed 13 digs for the
Greyhounds.
The Greyhounds fell in the championship match to Eastern University, 28-30, 25-30, 22-30. Wallace
led Moravian with 12 kills while DeBonis had nine kills and ten digs for Moravian. Bauer added 13 digs and seven kills
while Korsak
contributed 33 assists and nine digs. Struble had a career high 23 digs while Perkins had five kills. Radocha
had four kills and nine digs for Moravian. Emma Klein led Eastern with 13 kills
while Kara Hildebrand added 12 kills. Mandy Platt had seven kills and seven
blocks for the Eagles while Chelsea Lyon and Katie Ressler
each added 19 digs.

The Moravian men's cross
country team began the 2006 season with a second place finish at the Marywood
University Labor Day Invitational. The Greyhounds posted a team score of 45
points while College Misericordia won the meet with a total of 27 points.
Senior Josh Hunter (Palmerton,
PA/Palmerton HS) paced Moravian on the
8,000-meter course, placing third in a time of 28:36 while junior Timothy Pagano (Cherry Hills, NJ/Cherry
Hills West HS) was sixth in 28:56 for the Greyhounds. Freshman Steve DeFazio (Branchburg,
NJ/Somerville HS) was 11th of the 59
runners in a time of 30:10 and he was followed by sophomore Jeremiah Reinhart (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley
HS) in 12th place at 30:13 and senior Anthony
Sarno (Forked River, NJ/Lacey
Township HS) in 13th
in a time of 30:24. Sophomore John
McCullough (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan HS) finished 45th in 36:30 while
senior Eric Kratz (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany
Hills HS) rounded out the Moravian runners in 55th place in 40:26.

Moravian opened up its 2006 season with a 3-2 victory
over Drew University in a non-conference match
that was postponed two days due to weather. After a scoreless first half, the
Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute when senior
midfielder/forward Kristina Adams (Belle
Mead, NJ/Montgomery HS) found the net on a breakaway set up by a pass from
senior midfielder Alisha Davy (Oaklyn, NJ/Haddon Township
HS). Moravian would extend the lead to 2-0 in the 55th minute when freshman
forward Alessandra Valdetara
(Butler, NJ/Butler HS) drilled in a shot from the left side of the box
after taking a lead pass from senior defender Lindsey Lustrino (Spring Lake, NJ/Manasquan HS). Adams scored what was the
game-winning goal in the 66th minute as she blasted a shot into the upper
left-hand corner of the net from ten yards out. The Rangers would get on the
scoreboard in the 74th minute. Drew's second goal in the 79th minute was a
Moravian own goal when the Greyhound defense tried to clear a loose ball after
a corner kick and it rolled into the net. The Greyhounds had a 16-9 advantage
in shot while Drew had a 7-6 edge in corner kicks. Moravian sophomore goalie Caitlin Corrigan (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge
HS) made three saves in the match.

Moravian opened the 2006 season with a 3-2 overtime loss
to nationally-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology in the opening day of the
Stevens Institute of Technology College Classic in a driving rain. After a scoreless first half, the Greyhounds
took a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute when the Ducks put the ball in their own net
giving Moravian a lead on an own goal.
Stevens Institute, which was ranked 13th in the nation in the National
Soccer Coaches Association of America Preseason Top 25 poll and eighth in the
D3kicks.com Preseason Top 25, would tie the match in the 65th minute. The
Greyhounds would retake the lead in the 83rd minute when sophomore forward Louis Dollarton (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights
HS) took a pass from junior midfielder Ryan
Hess (Harleysville, PA/Souderton HS) and beat the goalie
while he was out of the net. The Ducks
tied the match again in the 87th minute. Stevens Tech would win the game in the
99th minute. The Ducks had a 41-2 advantage in shots and a 12-2 edge in corner
kicks. Moravian sophomore goalie Chris Nederostek (Lansdale,
PA/Christopher Dock HS) made
eight saves in his first collegiate start.
The Greyhounds scored with just over a minute remaining
in regulation to force overtime in a 1-1, double overtime tie with Roanoke (VA)
College on the second day of the Stevens Institute of Technology College
Classic. The Maroons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. Moravian
would eventually tie the match with just 1:07 remaining on the clock when Hess found the corner of the net off a
pass from freshman defender Blake
Ritchey (Harleysville, PA/Souderton HS). Neither team was able
to score in the two ten-minute extra sessions. Roanoke had a 28-7 advantage in shots and an
8-2 edge in corner kicks. The Maroons registered the only four shots in the
overtime periods. Nederostek had a career high 12 saves for the Greyhounds.

The Greyhounds opened the 2006 season with a 2-0 loss at
rival Muhlenberg College in the first round of the Mule
Classic. The Mules had a 20-2 edge in shots and an 8-3 advantage in penalty
corners. Moravian senior goalie Amanda
Gaun (Hatboro, PA/Hatboro-Horsham HS) made nine saves for the Greyhounds to
become the first goalie in school history with over 500 career saves with a
total of 507.
The Greyhounds earned their first win of the season,
defeating College Misericordia, 2-1, at the Muhlenberg College Mule Classic at
Scotty Wood Stadium. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute
of the match when freshman forward Kayla
Carson (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing HS) was fouled on a
breakaway attempt. Junior forward Savannah Bayer (Newton, NJ/Newton HS) put the
ensuing penalty stroke in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Moravian extended
its lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute when sophomore forward Nicole Maugle (Quakertown,
PA/Quakertown HS) tipped in a pass from
junior midfielder Mauri Dallago (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown
HS). College Misericordia would cut the Greyhound lead to 2-1 in the 33rd
minute. The Cougars had a 12-6 edge in shots and an 8-1 advantage in penalty
corners in the match. Gaun made six
saves including one with just five seconds left to preserve the win to raise
her school record career total to 513.

women's cross country team opened the 2006 season with a second place finish in
the seven-team Marywood University Labor Day Invitational. The Greyhounds had a
team score of 45 points, just four points behind the host Pacers. Individually
for Moravian, sophomore Kayla Teeling (Milford, N
J/Phillipsburg HS) was fourth on the 5,000-meter course in a time of 20:28
while sophomore Kelly Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) finished eighth in 21:34. Junior Katie Pulizzano
(Allentown, PA/William Allen HS) placed tenth for the Greyhounds in a time
of 22:01 followed by sophomore Naomie Kachel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) in 11th at
22:16 and junior Krystyn Fenon
(Palmerton, PA/Lehighton HS) in 12th at 22:29. Senior Jennifer Connolly (Weare,
NH/Manchester
West HS) was 15th for the Greyhounds in the 66-runner field with a time of
22:49 while freshman Laura Smith (Chatham, NJ/Chatham
HS) finished 56th in a time of 28:25.
