Sophomore quarterback Marc Braxmeier (Center Valley, PA/Allentown
Central Catholic HS) was 13 of 24 for 184 yards and three touchdowns in his
first collegiate start to lead the Moravian College football team to a 33-14
victory over Juniata College in Middle Atlantic Conference action at Knox
Stadium.
The Greyhounds took the opening kickoff and began its
first possession at its own 42-yard line.
Sophomore running back Tyler McCambridge (Northampton, PA/Allentown
Central Catholic HS) capped a five-play drive with a 21-yard touchdown
run. Sophomore Brian Reckenbeil (Branchburg,
NJ/Somerville HS) added the
extra-point for a 7-0 Moravian lead with 12:45 remaining in the first
quarter. Braxmeier was two-for-two for 29 yards in his first drive as Moravian’s
starting quarterback, while McCambridge finished the contest with 49 yards on seven
carries.
The Eagles punted after just three plays on their first
drive. The Greyhounds would get two
first downs and move into Juniata territory
before punting. Juniata
drove down to the Moravian 30-yard line before turning the ball over on
downs. Moravian would punt just after
crossing midfield in its next possession.
The Eagles were forced to punt after three plays to finish off the first
quarter.
Moravian would score on its first possession of the
second quarter to extend its lead. Braxmeier threw
his first collegiate touchdown pass, a 13-yard score to junior tight end Kris Bisci (Easton,
PA/Easton
HS) to cap the six-play, 44-yard drive.
Reckenbeil’s
extra-point went wide to the left, leaving the score at 13-0 with 12:35
remaining in the first half. Bisci caught four passes in the game
for 55 yards. The Eagles took the
ensuing kickoff and drove 85 yards to score their first points of the game to
pull Juniata within 13-7 with 8:08 left in the
second quarter.
The Greyhounds would get a 43-yard kickoff return from
freshman running back Edward Savoth (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) to start the Moravian drive at the Juniata 27-yard line.
Three plays later, sophomore running back Tyler de Rouen (West Milford, NJ/West Milford HS)
ran off the right side for a 16-yard touchdown.
Moravian went for the two-point conversion with McCambridge running off the left
side for the conversion, giving the Greyhounds a 21-7 lead with 6:38 remaining
in the half. Tyler de Rouen finished the game with 112 yards on 22 carries.
Juniata responded with
an 11-play, 72-yard drive to cut Moravian’s lead to 21-14 with 2:25 remaining
in the second quarter. Moravian would
have one more drive in the first half.
The Greyhounds would score with 1:12 left on the clock on a 20-yard
touchdown pass from Braxmeier
to senior wide receiver Shawn Martell (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS). Reckenbeil
missed the extra-point again to the left, giving the Greyhounds a 27-14
halftime lead. Martell caught three passes for 79 yards in the contest.
Juniata would take the
opening kickoff of the second half and drive into Moravian territory before
punting. The Greyhounds started their
first drive of the third quarter at their own five-yard line after a 32-yard
punt. Moravian picked up one first two
before being forced to punt. The Eagles
punted again after getting into Moravian territory. The Eagle defense stepped up and forced the
Greyhounds to punt for the second time in the quarter.
The Greyhounds would force Juniata to punt again when
Moravian senior defensive back Justin Klement (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall
HS) came off the left side of the line to block the punt. Freshman defensive back Brad Bodine (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS)
picked up the ball at the Juniata 31-yard line and returned it six yards to the
Juniata 25-yard line, setting up Moravian’s next possession.
Braxmeier
would cap off the four-play drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to sophomore
fullback Morgan de Rouen (West Milford, NJ/West Milford HS) on the first play of the fourth
quarter. The Greyhounds would go for the
two point conversion again but Braxmeier’s pass was broken up, leaving the Moravian lead at
33-14 with 14:49 remaining in the game.
Juniata would run three
plays before punting. After a good
return from Martell, the Greyhounds
started the drive at the Eagle 43-yard line.
However, the Greyhounds would punt after picking up a first down. The Greyhound defense would force the Eagles
to punt again for the fifth time in the second half. Moravian would also be forced to punt for the
fourth time in the half. Juniata would then drive to the Moravian five-yard line
before three straight incomplete passes gave the Greyhounds’ possession with
3:54 to play. Moravian would run out the
clock.
Braxmeier
added 28 yards on five carries while Morgan
de Rouen had 12 yards on two carries.
McCambridge
also caught two passes for 12 yards while sophomore wide receiver Tyler Hersch (Macungie, PA/Emmaus
HS) had two receptions for 18 yards.
Bodine
led the Moravian defense with ten tackles while sophomore linebacker Andrew Morrissey (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus
HS) added nine tackles with a sack, one of four by Moravian in the
game. Sophomore defensive back Carl Robinson (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley
HS) and junior safety Zach Santiago
(Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) each had seven tackles with Robinson breaking up two passes and Santiago adding a sack.

Moravian extended its winning streak to three straight
and captured its first Commonwealth Conference win of the season with a 30-28,
30-19, 26-30, 28-30, 15-10 victory at Messiah College. Senior outside hitter Kelly Bauer (Hellertown, PA/Notre Dame HS) led the Greyhounds with 17 kills,
and she added 14 digs while sophomore outside hitter Maria DeBonis (Nazareth, PA/Notre
Dame HS) had 15 kills and 13 digs. Senior setter Valerie Korsak (Coplay, PA/Whitehall HS)
ran the Moravian offense with 49 assists, and she contributed 22 digs and four
kills. Junior middle hitter Jenna
Wallace (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) had 15 kills and three blocks
in the win while junior middle hitter Katherine
Perkins (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton HS) added five kills.
Sophomore libero Stephanie Struble (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees HS) led the Greyhounds with 25 assists
while senior defensive specialist Ashley
Hugo (Bath, PA/Northampton HS) had
17 digs and a pair of service aces. Junior defensive specialist Elise Martin (Emmaus,
PA/ Emmaus HS) contributed 11 digs in the
Moravian win while junior outside hitter Rachel
Radocha (Whitehall, PA/
Whitehall HS)
had three kills for the Greyhounds.
The Greyhounds dropped their first match at the Elizabethtown
College Blue Jay Classic, falling to Neumann
College, 22-30, 30-32,
30-19, 21-30. Bauer led Moravian
with 13 kills and 13 digs while Korsak had 35 assists, 13 digs and six kills. Perkins and Wallace each contributed eight kills and three blocks while Radocha and DeBonis each had seven kills. Radocha added seven digs while DeBonis had 11
digs. Struble
paced Moravian with 20 digs while sophomore setter Elisa Molchany (North
Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) added four digs.
Moravian defeated Ursinus College,
28-30, 30-15, 30-24, 30-20 in the second match of the Elizabethtown College
Blue Jay Classic. Bauer led the
Greyhounds with 15 kills to go with ten digs and a pair of service aces while Wallace added 14 kills. Korsak paced the
Moravian offense with 39 assists to go with seven digs, five service aces and
three kills while Radocha had five
kills and six digs. Perkins
contributed four kills and four blocks for the Greyhounds while DeBonis had six
digs, two blocks and four kills. Struble had eight digs while junior defensive specialist Christa Burke (Center
Valley, PA/Southern
Lehigh HS) had seven digs and Hugo added six digs. Martin
contributed four digs in the Moravian victory.
Moravian split a pair of matches on the second day of the
Elizabethtown College Blue Jay Classic. The
Greyhounds dropped their first match on the day, falling to The University of
Scranton, 30-25, 28-30, 24-30, 30-17, 14-16. DeBonis led Moravian with 20 kills and six digs while Bauer contributed 13 kills, 16 digs, three service aces and two
blocks. Korsak had 45 assists, 12 digs, six kills and
two blocks. Radocha contributed 12
kills and six digs while Wallace had
11 kills, four blocks and three service aces. Perkins had four blocks and two kills while Molchany had seven digs and five service aces. Struble contributed 13 digs and three service aces for the Greyhounds.
Moravian won its final match, defeating Wilkes University,
30-20, 30-23, 30-15. Korsak
had her second triple-double of the season with ten kills, 11 digs and 31 assists,
and she added three blocks. Wallace
had ten kills, six digs, two service aces and two blocks while Bauer contributed nine kills and 11
digs. DeBonis
added seven kills for Moravian while Radocha
had five kills, three digs and two service aces. Perkins had four kills and two blocks for the Greyhounds while Hugo and Martin each had six digs. Struble and Burke each
had five digs in the victory.

The Greyhounds opened the 2006 Commonwealth Conference
season with a 2-1 loss at Albright
College. The Lions took a
1-0 lead in the first half when the Moravian defense put the ball in its own
net for an own goal in the 29th minute. The Lions took a 2-0 advantage in the
47th minute. Sophomore defender Alexandra
Frascella (Chatham,
NJ/Chatham HS) netted an
unassisted goal for Moravian in the 90th minute. The Greyhounds had an 8-6
advantage in shots while both teams had three corner kicks. Moravian sophomore
goalie Caitlin Corrigan (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge
HS) had three saves.
Moravian snapped a four-match winning streak and senior
forward Kristina Adams (Belle Mead,
NJ/Montgomery HS) set a pair of school records as the Greyhounds defeated
Widener University, 4-0, in Commonwealth Conference action. Adams broke the school
records for goals in a match by scoring all four Moravian goals, and she also
broke Carli Miller's record for points in a game
with eight. Adams
scored her first goal, an unassisted shot from 20-yards out, in the 16th
minute. She added a second goal in the first half off a short corner kick by
junior midfielder Allison Solomita (Chatham,
NJ/Chatham HS). Adams would
find the back of the net again in the 71st minute when she took a pass from Frascella and
scored form 25-yards out. Adams
notched her final goal of the night and seventh of the season in the 84th
minute off a short corner kick by senior midfielder Alisha Davy (Oaklyn, NJ/Haddon Township
HS) in the 90th minute. Moravian had a 15-13 advantage in shots while the
Pioneers had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Greyhound Corrigan made seven saves in her second shutout of the season.
The Greyhounds final contest of the week at St. Mary’s College of Maryland
was postponed due to inclement weather in southern Maryland.
It has not been rescheduled at this time.

The Greyhounds lost their 2006 Commonwealth Conference
opener, falling to Albright
College, 2-1, at Shirk
Stadium. The Lions jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead on unassisted goals in the
20th and 32nd minutes. Moravian would cut the split the Albright lead in half
with an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Ruben Concepcion (Blenheim, NJ/Triton Regional HS), his first goal
of the season, son a direct kick in the 52nd minute. The Greyhounds held a
15-13 advantage in shots while the Lions had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Moravian sophomore goalie Chris Nederostek (Lansdale,
PA/Christopher Dock HS) had
five saves in the contest.
Moravian dropped its second straight Commonwealth
Conference match, falling to Widener
University, 1-0. The
Pioneers scored the only goal of the match in the 16th minute. Widener had a
14-9 advantage in shots while the Greyhounds had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Nederostek had
five saves for the Greyhounds, and Moravian had one team save.

Moravian dropped its first home match of the 2006 season,
falling to Delaware
Valley College,
2-0, in non-conference action at Betty Prince Field. The Aggies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the
34th minute. Delaware
Valley scored its other
goal in the 65th minute. Moravian's best
chance to score came with just over two minutes remaining in the contest when
junior forward Savannah Bayer (Newton,
NJ/Newton
HS) had a penalty stroke. However, Delaware Valley
made the save to preserve the Aggies' shutout.
Delaware Valley had a 17-7 advantage in shots
while Moravian held an 8-7 edge in penalty corners. Greyhound senior goalie Amanda Gaun (Hatboro, PA/Hatboro-Horsham
HS) made 11 saves.
Moravian earned a 5-1 victory over Cedar Crest
College in a
non-conference match at Betty Prince Field. Moravian jumped out to a 1-0 just over a
minute into the match when junior forward Jayme
Baker (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) found a loose ball in front of
the net and tapped it in for her first goal of the season. The Greyhounds
scored again in the 16th minute when Bayer
put in a quick rebound off of a shot by freshman forward Julie Bisci (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg
HS). Moravian scored once more in the first half when senior defender Kim Gialanella (Glenwood,
NJ/Vernon
Township HS) scored her first
collegiate goal off of a pass from freshman forward Kayla Carson (Wyomissing,
PA/Wyomissing HS) on a
penalty corner. Cedar Crest opened the scoring in the second half in the 46th
minute. Moravian answered a minute and a
half later when Bayer lifted a loose
ball into the back of the cage for her second goal of the match and fourth of
the season. Gialanella finished off
the scoring in the 58th minute when she ripped a pass from junior midfielder Mauri Dallago (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown
HS) into the net from ten yards out. Moravian had a 29-3 advantage in shots and a
25-1 edge in penalty corners. Gaun
made two saves in 55 minutes of action while freshman keeper Kelly Schneider (Macungie, PA/Emmaus
HS) did not face a shot in her collegiate debut of 15 minutes. Gaun, the school record holder with 560
career saves, was credited with the win, the 21st of her career, tying the
Moravian record for career wins.

Conference match, falling to 17th ranked Juniata College,
7-0, at Betty Prince Field. Juniata had a 15-4
advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in penalty corners. Gaun had seven saves in 56 and a half minutes while Schneider did not make a save in the
remainder of the game. Moravian freshman midfielder Samantha Bell (Sparta,
NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) added
a defensive save.

Moravian placed fourth of 19 teams
at its annual Fall Invitational at Southmoore Golf Course. The Greyhounds had a
team score of 304 while Susquehanna
University won the event
with a team total of 296. Susquehanna's Mitch Mercer won individual honors with
a round of 69 on the par 71 course. Mercer shot 32 on the back nine to break a
tie with Moravian senior Brian Bergstol
(Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor HS), who also
fired a 69. However, Bergstol had a
34 on the back nine. Also competing for the Greyhounds in the 94 golfer
tournament were junior Eric Whitman
(Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg {PA} HS), who tied for seventh
with a round of 74, freshman Alan Kliewer (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata HS), who was tied for 15th
at 76, and junior Brian Scofield
(Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS), who tied for 62nd with an
18-hole total of 85. Moravian junior Bryan
Ott (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) had to
withdraw during the tournament after being hit on the elbow with a ball. The
Greyhounds did have three other individuals play their first rounds of the
season with senior John Gilbert (Allentown, PA/Freedom HS)
shooting a 75, freshman Steve Labiak (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) carding
a 79 and senior Thad Miller (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus
HS) posting an 18-hole total of 80.

Moravian
earned a 9-0 sweep of Messiah
College in a Commonwealth
Conference match at Hoffman Courts. The Greyhounds won all three doubles
matches to open the contest with victories by the tandems of seniors Courtney Hall (Denver, PA/Cocalico HS) and
Margo Kokolus (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS),
junior Brittany Popaca (Lavallette,
NJ/Point Pleasant Beach HS) and sophomore Mary Kate Kelly (Beach Haven, NJ/Southern Regional HS) and
sophomores Kelly Gerbino
(Easton, PA/Easton HS) and Dyana Swan
(Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS). In singles action, all six Moravian players
won in straight sets with wins by Kokolus,
Swan, Popaca, Kelly and
juniors Jennel Yelito (Tamaqua,
PA/Tamaqua HS) and Rebecca Angstadt (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg HS).
The
Greyhounds played their first non-conference match of the season and knocked
off previously undefeated NCAA Division II Philadelphia University, 5-4, at
Hoffman Courts. Moravian trailed 2-1 after doubles action with just the team of
Popaca and Kelly picking up a point. However, the Greyhounds would win four of
six singles matches for the win. Popaca,
Yelito, Angstadt and Swan all had straight sets singles
victories. Angstadt
needed a tiebreaker in her second set at sixth singles to win her match
individually and the overall match for the Greyhounds in the last of the
singles contests to finish in the dark.
Moravian
took five players to the 2006 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association
Division III Southeast Regional hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
All five Greyhounds competed in the championship bracket, but were knocked out
by the end of the first day. Kokolus
earned a first round win before falling in the round of 32 to sixth seeded Mona
Iyer. Hall,
Popaca and Yelito and Kelly each
lost two singles matches with each player falling to a seeded player either in
the round of 64 or the first round of the consolation bracket. Yelito would win one set in her first
round match against Catherine Martinez of Elizabethtown College.
In doubles action, the teams of Hall
and Kokolus and Popaca and Kelly each
suffered first round losses to seeded opponents before falling in the first
round of the consolation bracket.
