Moravian used a 10-3 run over the final 3:29 to secure a
79-70 victory over local rival DeSales
University at Johnston Hall.
The win was the Greyhounds first over the Bulldogs at home since November 23,
1993. Moravian jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game
only to see DeSales rally and tie the contest at 16-15 with 11:43 remaining in
the first half. The game was tied for the third and final time at 23-23 with
7:53 until the intermission as the Greyhounds led the entire contest. Moravian
headed to the locker room with a 39-36 lead after shooting 15 of 31 (48.4
percent) from the floor, two of three on three-pointers and seven of ten at the
foul line in the first 20 minutes of the game. The Bulldogs were 11 of 24 from
the field, four of 11 behind the three-point line and ten of 16 at the foul
line in the first half. Both teams committed 15 first half turnovers with the
difference in the game coming at on the boards as Moravian had a 20-12
advantage in rebounds in the first half. The Greyhounds built a nine-point
lead, 47-38, just under three minutes into the second
half; however, DeSales eventually pulled within a point at 61-60 with 6:52 to
play in the game. The Bulldogs trailed just 69-66 with 3:44 remaining when the
Greyhounds started to ice the game at the foul line, making all six of their
free throws in the final 3:29. Moravian was 13 of 27 from the floor in the
second half (48.1 percent) and made one of four three-pointers and 13 of 14
free throws (92.9 percent). The Greyhounds also had a 20-14 advantage in
rebounds in the second half to out rebound DeSales 40-26 for the game. The
Bulldogs struggled from the floor in the second half, making just nine of 25
field goal attempts, five of 11 three-pointers and 11 of 18 free throws. Senior
forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS) led all
scorers and four Moravian players in double-figures with a season high 26
points, and she added 14 rebounds for her first double-double of the year. Applegate, who moved into 12th all-time
in both points and rebounds with 1,136 points and 522 rebounds for her career,
also had three assists and three steals in the victory while shooting seven of
11 from the floor and 12 of 15 at the foul line. Freshman guard Jessica Foran
(Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS) hit double figures for the third straight
game for the Greyhounds, netting 14 points to go with five rebounds, three
steals and a pair of assists. Senior guard Katie
Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) and freshman guard Amanda Brown (Schuylkill Haven,
PA/Schuylkill Haven HS) each tossed in ten points for Moravian with Brown dishing out five assists.
Freshman forward Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich,
NY/Oyster Bay HS) contributed eight points
and a career high nine rebounds while junior guard La'Toya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) had five points, five
steals and three assists. Freshman guard Kate Harrison added three assists for
the Greyhounds.

Moravian suffered a 72-68 loss to local rival DeSales University in the team's home opener in
Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first three
minutes of the game before the Bulldogs rallied to take a 16-15 lead with 8:52
left in the first half. After six lead changes, DeSales eventually pulled away
to take a 35-25 halftime lead. The Bulldogs were 13 of 34 from the floor, one
of six on three-pointers and eight of ten on free throws in the first half
while Moravian made just nine of 29 field goal attempts (31.0 percent), three
of 14 three-pointers (21.4 percent) and all four of its free throws. DeSales
also had a 24-18 advantage in rebounds and had forced the Greyhounds into 12
turnovers in the first 20 minutes of the game. The Bulldogs kept the lead to
begin the second half, eventually leading 45-34 with 14:34 on the clock.
Moravian put together a 30-9 run over the next eight minutes to pull ahead
64-54 on a three-point play by junior forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata HS) with
6:30 left in the game. DeSales responded with an 11-0 run to take a 65-54 lead
with 3:26 left to play. Moravian junior forward Steve Wenderfer (Chester, NJ/Mendham HS) made a pair of free throws
to tie the score at 68-68 with 1:08 left but DeSales made four of six free
throws in the final 38 seconds to earn the win. The Bulldogs made 14 of 22
field goals in the second half, one of two three-pointers and eight of 15 free
throws. Moravian shot well in the second half, making 17 of 30 field goal
attempts (56.7 percent), three of nine three-pointers and six of seven free
throws (85.7 percent). DeSales did finish the game with an advantage on the
boards, 36-31. The Greyhounds had three players in double figures led by 15
points from Franzyshen.
Wenderfer contributed 12 points and
a game high nine rebounds while junior forward Chris Earley (Brielle,
NJ/Manasquan HS) had 11
points and five rebounds off the bench for Moravian. Junior forward Eric Whitman (Blairstown,
NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg {PA} HS)
had nine points while freshman forward Eric
Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) tossed in seven points.
Senior guard Ryan Miller (Easton,
PA/Easton HS) contributed six points and three rebounds for the Greyhounds
while senior guard Michael Clemente
(Toms River, NJ/Central Regional HS) had five assists and three points. Senior forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville, PA/Coatesville
HS) added five points and five boards for Moravian.
The Greyhounds earned a 75-72 non-conference victory at Dickinson College, rallying to score 17 points in
the final 4:38 to win the game. Moravian scored the first basket of the game
before watching the Red Devils run off ten straight points for a 10-2 lead. Dickinson would extend
the lead to 20-9 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the first half.
Moravian slowly began closing the gap and would eventually take a 33-32 lead on
a three-pointer by Earley with 3:31
left in the first half. The Greyhounds went into the locker room with a 43-41
halftime lead. Moravian made 17 of 32 first half field goal attempts (53.1
percent) and eight of nine free throws (88.9 percent) while making just one of
six three-pointers. Dickinson
was 16 of 33 from the floor, five of ten behind the three-point line and four
of six from the foul line in the game's first 20 minutes. Early in the second
half, the Greyhounds put together a 9-4 run to take a 52-45 lead. However, Dickinson responded with
a 20-6 run to lead 65-58 with 4:52 left in the contest. Moravian answered with
a 17-10 run to end the game. The Greyhounds finally retook the lead at 73-72 on
a driving lay-up by Clemente with 11
seconds remaining, and Clemente hit
two free throws with two seconds left to ice the game. Moravian struggled
shooting in the second half, making just 10 of 27 field goal attempts (37.0
percent) and three of seven three-pointers (42.9 percent) while the Greyhounds
connected on nine of 12 free throws (75 percent). Dickinson also struggled shooting after the
intermission, making 13 of 34 field goals attempts, two of seven three-pointers
and three of six free throws. Moravian had a 41-38 advantage in rebounds but
also committed 15 turnovers to ten turnovers for the Red Devils. Franzyshen led
three Moravian players in double figures, connecting on a game high 17 points,
which also tied his career high. Franzyshen was five of five from the floor and seven of
eight from the foul line. Whitman
had his second double-double of the season for Moravian with 14 points and ten
rebounds while Miller tossed in 13
points to go with five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. Clemente netted eight points and added
three assists and three rebounds while Earley
had six points. Wenderfer
contributed seven points and six rebounds while Weaver had four points and three rebounds. Devlin had six points for the Greyhounds.
