Greyhound Weekly Update, January 21, 2008 (-2222-)

            Moravian snapped a two-game losing streak and remained undefeated at home, defeating The Catholic University of America, 67-63, in a Landmark Conference game in Johnston Hall. The Cardinals scored off of the opening tip on a jumper before a 6-0 Moravian run gave the Greyhounds a 6-2 lead at the 17:52 mark. The Greyhounds pushed their lead to seven points on three occasions, the final time at 15-8 with 14:27 remaining in the first half on a lay-up by senior forward Chris Earley (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS). Catholic would close to within two points on a three-pointer at 15-13 at the 12:08 mark. However, Moravian would retain the lead for the entire half, going up by as many as nine points on the three-pointer by senior forward Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg {PA} HS) at 33-24 with 2:22 until the intermission. The Greyhounds headed to the locker room with a 35-29 lead after shooting 15 of 27 from the floor (55.6 percent), four of eight behind the three-point line and one of two at the foul line in the first 20 minutes of the game. The Greyhounds continued to hold the lead early in the second half with Moravian's margin reaching double figures on a Whitman fast break lay-up at 18:02 for a 42-31 lead. The Greyhounds led 46-38 with 13:53 after another Whitman lay-up when Catholic went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 48-48 on a lay-up with 9:57 to play. Moravian answered with a 10-0 spurt to pull ahead 58-48 with 6:23 to play on an inside basket by senior forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata HS). The Cardinals would get within two points, 65-63, on a three-pointer with just 33 seconds remaining but a pair of Franzyshen free throws with nine seconds left would seal the Moravian victory. The Greyhounds cooled off in the second half, making 12 of 28 field goals (42.9 percent), three of nine three-pointers and five of eight free throws. Moravian did finish the game with a 37-31 edge in rebounds while committing 13 turnovers. Moravian had a balanced scoring attack again with four players in double figures led by Earley with a game high 18 points. Earley also tied his career high with 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season, and Earley blocked a career best five shots while grabbing three steals. Whitman tossed in 14 points and pulled down four rebounds while senior Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and sophomore forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) each scored 11 points for the Greyhounds. Miller added five assists and four rebounds while Weaver had four boards as well. Franzyshen finished the contest with eight rebounds, seven points, three steals and a pair of blocked shots for Moravian while freshman guard Maurice Young (Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut Hill Academy) had six points and four boards.

 

            The Greyhounds earned their second straight victory and remained undefeated at home with their seventh win of the season in Johnston Hall with a 96-82 victory over Goucher College in Landmark Conference action. Moravian scored first on a lay-up by Franzyshen and the game would remain close earlier. After a pair of ties, Goucher would take its first lead of the game with 10:48 remaining in the first half on a three-pointer. There would be three lead changes before the Greyhounds took the lead for good, 17-16, on a pair of free throws by Young with 9:28 to play in the first half. Young's free throws started a 15-7 run to open a 30-23 lead at the 3:49 mark on a Franzyshen jumper. The Greyhounds' largest lead of the first half was nine points, 39-30, on a three-pointer by Miller with 1:31 before the intermission. Moravian would head to the locker room with a 40-33 halftime lead after shooting 15 of 32 (46.9 percent) from the field, three of eight behind the three-point line and seven of nine at the foul line in the first half. The Greyhounds had a 22-17 advantage in rebounds in the first 20 minutes while committing ten turnovers. Moravian quickly opened up a double-digit lead in the second half on a jumper by Earley and another three-pointer by Miller for a 45-33 lead just 32 seconds into the second half. The Greyhounds would eventually lead by as many as 24 points, 81-57, on a Miller jumper at the 8:11 mark. Moravian had a very hot hand in the second half shooting 19 of 25 (76.0 percent) from the field, five of six behind the three-point line (83.3 percent) and 13 of 15 (86.7 percent) at the foul line in the second half. The Greyhounds had a 35-32 edge in rebounds for the game and committed 21 turnovers while forcing Goucher into just 15 turnovers. The Greyhounds had six players in double figures led by Miller with 20 points while shooting seven of 11 from the field and four of six behind the three-point line. Earley had his second straight double-double for Moravian and his fourth of the season with 17 points and a career high 12 rebounds to go with four assists. Whitman tossed in 16 points and added six boards, three assists and three steals for the Greyhounds while Young had a career high 15 points. Weaver also netted a career high with 14 points off the bench to go with three steals while Franzyshen had 11 points and three rebounds. Moravian's only other player to score was freshman forward Chris Cullen (East Islip, NY/East Islip HS) with three points.

            Moravian won its second straight Landmark Conference game, defeating The Catholic University of America, 63-53, in Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds scored the first two points of the game on a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Jessica Foran (Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS) just four seconds into the game before the Cardinals scored five straight for a 5-2 lead. Moravian would move ahead 6-5 on another pair of Foran free throws only to see Catholic retake the lead. The Greyhounds would push back in front on a Foran jumper for an 8-7 lead with 16:57 remaining in the first half, and Moravian would lead 10-7 before the Cardinals ran off six straight points for a 13-10 Catholic lead. The Cardinals pushed their lead to 17-12 at the 7:54 mark. The Greyhounds eventually pulled within a point at 20-19 on a three-pointer from sophomore guard Amanda Brown (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven HS) with 3:36 before the intermission. Catholic pushed ahead once more for a 23-19 lead with 2:41 to play before halftime before Moravian tied the game at 23-23 on a Foran jumper with 1:18 on the clock. Another three-pointer from Brown would knot the score again at 27-27 with 30 seconds remaining in the first half. Neither team would score before the intermission, sending the teams to the locker room tied at 27-27. The Greyhounds struggled shooting the ball in the first half, making just ten of 34 field goal attempts (29.4 percent), two of eight three-pointers and five of eight free throws. Moravian had a 22-17 advantage in rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Sophomore forward Alyssa Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS) scored on a jumper for the Greyhounds just 17 seconds into the second half to give Moravian a 29-27 lead, a lead the Greyhounds never relinquished. The bucket started a 12-1 run to five Moravian a 39-28 lead on a lay-up by freshman guard/forward Emily Smith (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South HS) with 13:41 remaining. The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 14 points at 45-31 on a lay-up by sophomore guard Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor HS) with 11:23 to play. Catholic would score six straight points to close within eight points at 45-37 at the 8:55 mark but the Greyhounds pushed the lead back to 15 points at 55-40 with five minutes remaining in the contest. The Cardinals would then go on a 10-2 run to close within 57-50 with 1:15 remaining. Foran would connect on four free throws in the final 23 seconds to ice the game. Moravian shot the ball much better in the second half, making 13 of 29 field goal attempts (44.8 percent), three of four three-pointers and seven of ten free throws. The Greyhounds finished the game with a 43-33 advantage in rebounds. The Greyhounds had just two players in double figures with Foran netting a team high 19 points including 11 in the first half. Foran also had a career high eight rebounds to go with four assists. Brown tossed in 15 points while connecting on five of nine three-pointers in the Moravian win. Sophomore forward Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay HS) contributed eight points and four rebounds while Bisci grabbed a game high ten rebounds to go with seven points and three assists. Smith and Harrison each netted six points for the Greyhounds with Smith adding five steals and Harrison contributing five rebounds and three steals. Senior guard LaToya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) had six rebounds and two points in the Moravian win.

 

            The Greyhounds remained undefeated at home with a 70-59 victory over Goucher College in Landmark Conference action in Johnston Hall. The victory was Moravian's third straight and seventh of the season at home. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 6-0 lead including a pair of baskets by Harrison before the Gophers scored. Moravian's lead would quickly go to double-digits on a three-pointer by senior guard Megan Kocon (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) for a 12-2 lead at the 16:10 mark. The Greyhounds' largest lead of the first half was 18 points, 28-10, with 6:58 remaining on a Harrison jumper. Moravian headed to the locker room with a 43-27 halftime lead. The Greyhounds had a hot hand in the first half, connecting on 16 of 29 field goal attempts (55.2 percent), both three-point attempts and nine of ten free throw attempts. Moravian also had a 21-11 advantage in rebounds. When the second half started, the Greyhounds would continue to extend their lead, eventually to 25 points, 59-34, with 13:14 to play in the contest on a jumper from Stearns. Moravian would start to rest in starters about midway through the second half and briefly saw its lead drop to nine points twice in the final 1:16 of the game. The Greyhounds were nine of 27 from the floor (33.3 percent), one of eight on three-pointers and eight of 13 at the foul line in the final 20 minutes. Moravian finished with a 44-36 advantage on the boards, just the fifth time in 16 games this season the Greyhounds have out-rebounded an opponent. Moravian had three players in double figures led by Foran, who had a team high of 19 points while shooting a perfect eight-for-eight from the foul line. Foran also had three rebounds. Harrison tossed in 13 points with four assists and two rebounds while Stearns had 12 points and a team nine boards. Sophomore forward Alyssa Bisci added nine points and eight rebounds for the Greyhounds while sophomore forward Lauren Fornazor (Rivervale, NJ/Pascack Valley HS) had six points and three rebounds. Brown contributed five points and three rebounds while Blake had five boards, four assists, four steals, three points and two blocked shots.

            The Greyhounds returned to action for the first time in a month and a half at the non-scoring Susquehanna University Orange & Maroon Classic. Moravian had five individual and three relay teams earn first place finishes. Senior Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) won three events, capturing first in the 55-meter hurdles in an NCAA Division III qualifying time of 7.68 seconds, the long jump with a leap of 6.95 meters (22 feet, 9 3/4 inches), just one-one hundredth of a meter shy of the NCAA Division III qualifying mark, and the 55-meter dash in 6.57 seconds. Junior Blair Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) earned first in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 15.02 meters (49 feet, 3 1/2 inches) while sophomore Michael Blenk (Inwood, NY/Lawrence HS) won the triple jump with a distance of 12.91 meters (42 feet, 4 1/4 inches).

 

            The Greyhounds won all three relay races at the meet with the 4,000-meter distance medley relay squad of juniors Jeremiah Reinhart (Doylestown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) and Jacob Tazik (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing HS), sophomore Steve Parisi (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) and freshman Conner Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) finishing in a winning time of 10:54.42, the 4x200-meter relay team of Brown, seniors James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) and Nathaniel Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown Area HS) and freshman Warner Jones (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) winning with a time of 1:33.98 and the 4x400-meter relay squad of Brown, Tussey, Jones and junior Jared Henrie (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley HS) capturing first in 3:32.47.

 

            Brown also took second in the high jump, clearing 1.88 meters (six feet, two inches) while Blenk was sixth at 1.83 meters (six feet). Blenk also finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 6.41 meters (21 feet, 1/2 inch). Junior Alan Woods (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff HS) was third in the pole vault clearing 4.25 meters (13 feet, 11 1/4 inches) while senior Allan Fatzinger (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) was fourth at a height of 4.10 meters (13 feet, 5 1/4 inches) and freshman Adam Pollini (Shamokin Dam, PA/Lewisburg HS) finished sixth at 3.80 meters (12 feet, 5 1/2 inches).

 

            Maginnis was second in the shot put with a school record toss of 15.40 meters (50 feet, 6 1/4 inches) while Brown placed fifth at 13.02 meters (42 feet, 8 3/4 inches). Maginnis surpassed the previous school record by nearly a foot. Freshman Zachary Valentine (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS) was ninth in the shot put at 11.02 meters (36 feet, two inches) while sophomore Matthew Wisotsky placed 12th at a distance of 10.74 meters (35 feet, three inches). Freshman Troy Bertholf (Liberty, NY/Liberty HS) finished third in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 12.95 meters (42 feet, six inches) while Wisotsky was 15th at 9.33 meters (30 feet, 7 1/2 inches).

 

            Tussey was second in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.81 seconds in the finals after winning his preliminary heat in 7.82 seconds. Brown won his preliminary heat at 7.68 seconds while Blenk placed fifth in the finals at 8.51 seconds and sixth in the preliminaries at 8.31 seconds. In the 55-meter dash, Bell was second in the finals in a time of 6.69 seconds after placing fourth in the preliminaries in 6.70 seconds. Brown won his heat of the preliminaries with a time of 6.66 seconds while Jones took 12th in the preliminaries in 7.01 seconds. Bell was second the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.97 seconds while Jones took third in 24.10 seconds. Fatzinger was sixth in the race in 24.82 seconds while senior Vince Pagano (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East HS) was eighth in 25.07 seconds. Tussey was second in the 400-meter dash in 50.61 seconds while Henrie took ninth in 54.95 seconds.

 

            Parisi finished sixth in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:06.19 while Tazik was seventh in 2:09.24. Senior Khizer Tariq (Bethlehem, PA/Saucon Valley HS) finished 14th at 2:13.37 while sophomore Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) placed 18th in a time of 2:15.05. Senior Timothy Pagano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West HS) finished 11th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:17.46. Sophomore Steve DeFazio was 21st in the mile run in 5:04.63 while sophomore Timothy Betz (Havertown, PA/Haverford HS) finished 22nd in a time of 5:06.59.

 

            The Greyhounds also had two other teams compete in the 4x400-meter relay with the "B" team of Vince Pagano, Bell, Parisi and Blenk finishing sixth in 3:42.10 and the "C" squad of Tazik, Tariq, Skutches and Murphy taking seventh in a time of 3:44.60.

            The Greyhounds returned to action for the first time in a month and a half at the non-scoring Susquehanna University Orange & Maroon Classic. Moravian had seven individual and two relay teams capture first place finishes. Sophomore Jessica Posimo (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) won a trio of events, capturing the long jump with a leap of 5.01 meters (16 feet, 5 1/4 inches), the triple jump with a distance of 10.32 meters (33 feet, 10 1/4 inches) and the 55-meter hurdles in 8.78 seconds. Freshman Syndi Wisniewski (Orlando, FL/Winter Park HS) captured the 200-meter dash in 26.73 seconds and the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:01.42. Sophomore Anna Heim (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS) won the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.35 meters (ten feet, 11 3/4 inches) while sophomore Rachel Beck (Churchville, PA/Council Rock South HS) captured the 55-meter dash in 7.56 seconds.

 

            The Greyhounds 4x200-meter relay squad of Wisniewski, Posimo, Beck and freshman Alyssa Wert (Orefield, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) won in a time of 1:49.28 while the 4x400-meter relay team of Wisniewski, Beck, Wert and Heim captured first place in 4:17.36.

 

            Sophomore Rachel Riggs (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg HS) took second in the triple jump with a distance of 10.23 meters (33 feet, 6 3/4 inches), and she was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 4.71 meters (15 feet, 5 1/2 inches). Heim placed seventh in the long jump at 4.62 meters (15 feet, two inches) while Wisniewski was 11th with a leap of 4.34 meters (14 feet, three inches) and senior Ashlee Scarborough (Warrington, PA/Villa Joseph Marie HS) placed 16th at 4.01 meters (13 feet, two inches). Posimo placed seventh in the high jump, clearing 1.42 meters (four feet, 7 3/4 inches) while junior Thea Kennerkneckt (Central Valley, NY/Monroe-Woodbury HS) finished fourth at 2.90 meters (nine feet, 6 1/4 inches). Sophomore Flora Robertson (Hawley, PA/East Stroudsburg North HS) was fourth in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 12.01 meters (39 feet, five inches).

 

            Freshman Alexandra Lopez (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS) placed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 9.68 seconds after finishing fifth in the preliminaries at 9.74 seconds. Posimo had the top time in the preliminaries at 8.90 seconds. Wisniewski placed fifth in the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.68 seconds after placing first in the preliminaries at 7.55 seconds. Sophomore Katelyn Chando (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) was sixth in the 55-meter dash in 8.13 seconds, and she was sixth in the preliminaries in 7.84 seconds while Wert was 12th at 8.11 seconds. Beck took third in the 200-meter dash in 27.70 seconds while Wert was 13th in 29.42 seconds and Lopez placed 16th in a time of 30.03 seconds. Chando also finished fifth in the 400-meter dash in 1:04.83.

 

            Junior Kayla Teeling (Milford, NJ/Phillipsburg HS) placed fourth in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:34.87 while freshman Kristen Labert (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) took 13th in 2:43.81. Sophomore Kaleen Holden (Scranton, PA/Bishop Hannan HS) finished 16th in 2:46.72 while junior Naomie Kachel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) was 18th in the race in a time of 2:54.31. Senior Katie Pulizzano (Allentown, PA/William Allen HS) was second in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 20:21.02 while freshman Tara Chiarella (Hallstead, PA/Montrose Area HS) placed third at 20:22.24 and junior Kelly Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) took sixth in 20:41.65.

 

            The Greyhounds had a second team of Chando, Riggs, Kennerknecht and Lopez in the 4x200-meter relay that placed fifth in a time of 1:56.70 while the "B" team of Chando, Teeling, Holden and Labert in the 4x400-meter relay finished sixth at 4:36.65.
