Men’s Basketball – 18-8(Landmark
Conference 9-5)
The
second seeded Greyhounds dropped a 79-78 decision to third seed The University
of Scranton in a Landmark Conference Semifinal in Johnston Hall. Moravian
suffered its third straight loss after moving within one victory of tying the
school record for wins, and the Greyhounds, playing at home in the postseason
for the first time since the 1995-96 season, dropped their eighth straight
postseason game since a 71-62 win over Dickinson College in the Middle Atlantic
Conference Playoffs of the 1989-90 season. Moravian would score first against
Scranton on a jumper by senior forward Mark
Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata HS) in the paint, and the Greyhounds
eventually pushed out to a 9-4 lead on a jumper by senior forward Chris Earley (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS)
in the lane at the 17:06 mark. The Royals pulled within a point at 11-10 with
14:29 remaining in the first half. Moravian would then score nine straight
points, finished off on a jumper by sophomore forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS), to pull ahead, 20-10, the
Greyhounds' first double-digit lead of the night, with 12:06 until the
intermission. Scranton would close in again, this time to three points at 27-24
at the 7:08 mark of the first half. The Greyhounds would push their lead back
to eight points, 33-25; on a lay-up by freshman forward Chris Cullen (East Islip, NY/East Islip HS) with 4:14 to go in the
first half only to see the Royals pull within a point, 35-34, with just 1:18
remaining in the first half. Moravian senior guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) would connect on a jumper with
44 seconds left in the half to send the Greyhounds to the locker room with a
37-34 lead. The Greyhounds shot the ball well in the first 20 minutes of the
game, connecting on 15 of 27 field goal attempts (55.6 percent), two of 11
three-pointers and five of eight free throws. Moravian also had a 16-13 edge in
rebounds in the first half. Scranton made 12 of 25 field goals, five of nine
three-pointers and five of seven free throws in the first 20 minutes. The
Greyhounds started the second half with a three-point play by Franzyshen to push their lead back to
six points, 40-34. Moravian would continue to hold onto the lead and eventually
push the lead to double digits at ten points on three different occasions. The
Greyhounds' final ten-point advantage, 68-58, came with 6:27 to play on a free
throw by Franzyshen. Moravian still
had a seven point lead, 72-65, after a pair of free throws by freshman guard Maurice Young (Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut
Hill Academy) with 3:50 remaining in the contest. At that point, Scranton
went on a 10-0 run to build a 75-72 lead with 1:19 to play. The Royals first
lead of the game came at the 1:34 mark when Young was stripped in the backcourt and Scranton scored on a
breakaway lay-up for a 73-72 lead. Moravian would tie the contest at 75-75 with
53 seconds remaining when Miller
connected on his school record 158th career three-pointer. However, the Royals
made a lay-up with 25 seconds to go and a pair of free throws with just 2.1
seconds remaining to give the Royals a 79-75 lead. After a timeout, Earley threw a long inbounds pass to Franzyshen, who hit a turnaround
three-pointer at the buzzer to set the final score. Moravian's shooting cooled
in the second half, making just 12 of 25 field goal attempts (48.0 percent),
five of ten three-pointers and 12 of 15 free throws while Scranton warmed up in
the final 20 minutes, making 14 of 27 field goal attempts, three of seven
three-pointers and 14 of 17 free throws. The Royals also finished the game with
a 31-28 edge in rebounds while both teams committed 18 turnovers. The
Greyhounds had four players in double figures led by Earley's game high 22 points. Earley,
who earlier in the day was named the Landmark Conference Defensive Player of
the Year, also had six rebounds, five assists and two steals while shooting
eight of 11 from the floor, two of three on three-pointers and a perfect
four-for-four at the foul line. Franzyshen
tossed in 17 points to go along with four rebounds and two assists while Miller netted 14 points to give him
1,077 in his career, and he had two rebounds and two assists. Weaver tossed in 11 points for the
Greyhounds with three steals while senior forward Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg HS) and Cullen each had five points. Cullen grabbed four boards while Whitman had two rebounds and two
steals. Young netted three points
for Moravian, all at the foul line, with three assists and two boards while
freshman guard Steve Siracusa (New
Providence, NJ/New Providence HS) grabbed three rebounds.

Women’s Basketball – 16-10
(Landmark Conference 9-5)
The third seeded Greyhounds dropped
a 61-59 decision at second seed Juniata College in the Landmark Conference
semifinals. Moravian was making its seventh straight postseason appearance and
for the first time in since the string of postseason berths began; the
Greyhounds will not participate in the conference championship game. Juniata
jumped out to a 3-0. Moravian would trail, 9-7, after a lay-up by senior guard LaToya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS)
at the 17:20 mark when the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to take a 16-7 lead with
13:56 remaining before halftime. The Greyhounds responded with a 15-0 run of
their own to take a 22-16 lead after a three-point play by sophomore guard Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold
Spring Harbor HS) with 8:28 to go in the first half. Moravian's lead would
eventually hit nine points twice, the final time at 30-21 on a jumper by
freshman guard/forward Emily Smith (East
Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South HS) with 4:35 to go in the first 20
minutes. The Eagles would rattle off eight straight points to pull within 30-29
with 46 seconds remaining in the first half. Moravian sophomore guard Jessica Foran (Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS)
hit a pair of free throws with 29 seconds to go to send the Greyhounds to the
locker room with a 32-29 lead. Moravian was 12 of 29 (41.4 percent) from the
floor and a perfect eight-for-eight at the foul line in the first 20 minutes of
the game, and the Greyhounds had a 15-13 advantage in rebounds. Moravian, which
missed all four of its three-point attempts in the first half, also forced
Juniata into 15 turnovers while committing 11. The Eagles had a hot hand in the
first half, making 12 of 22 field goal attempts, two of five three-pointers and
three of four free throws. Early in the second half, the lead went
back-and-forth with neither team leading by more than a point until the 15:46
mark then the Eagles went up 37-34. Juniata would eventually push its lead to
five points twice, first at 13:40 and then at the 12:22 mark to lead 46-41. The
Greyhounds would cut the Juniata lead to a point, 46-45, with 9:26 to go on a
lay-up by Smith only to see the
Eagles push the lead back to five points, 52-47, with 5:40 remaining. Moravian
would put together an 8-2 run to take a 55-54 lead on a jumper by Harrison with 3:56 left in the contest.
However, that was the Greyhounds' last basket from the floor in the contest.
Juniata briefly retook the lead, 56-55 before Harrison hit two free throws to put Moravian back in the lead, 57-56
with 3:06 remaining. Foran would
extend Moravian's lead to 59-56 with a pair of free throws at the 2:42 mark,
but the Greyhounds would not score again. Juniata pulled within a point, 59-58
with 2:20 to go, and then neither team would score again until Juniata made a
lay-up with 19 seconds left to give the Eagles a 60-59 lead. Juniata hit a free
throw with six seconds left to set the final score. Moravian struggled shooting
the ball in the second half, making just nine of 28 field goal attempts (32.1
percent), one of four three-pointers and eight of ten free throws. The
Greyhounds did finish the game with a 33-31 advantage in rebounds, and Moravian
forced 26 Juniata turnovers while committing 19 of its own. The Eagles
continued to have the hot hand in the final 20 minutes, making 14 of 28 field
goal attempts, one of six three-pointers and three of five free throws. The
Greyhounds had three players in double figures in the contest led by 17 points
from Harrison, who also grabbed four
rebounds. Foran tossed in 13 points
and added a team high six rebounds while sophomore forward Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay HS) returned to the
line-up after missing a game with six boards and four points. Smith tossed in ten points for Moravian
and grabbed four rebounds while Blake
had six points. Sophomore forward Alyssa
Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS) had four points, four rebounds and three
steals for the Greyhounds while sophomore forward Lauren Fornazor (Rivervale, NJ/Pascack Valley HS) had three steals.

Baseball – 4-1 (Landmark Conference 0-0)
Moravian opened its 2008 Spring

inning. Shea led off with a single
and moved to second on a passed ball. After Gambrino was hit by a pitch, sophomore right fielder David Lengyel (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS)
put down a sacrifice bunt that scored Shea
all the way from second base. Moravian
finished off the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning
when freshman third baseman Jake

and Durso would cross the plate on
an RBI single by sophomore designated hitter Dan Cahill (Easton, PA/Easton HS). Moravian would add another three
runs in the top of the second inning to build a 6-0 lead. Senior second baseman
Brett Stout (Easton, PA/Easton) drew
a one-out walk and scored on an RBI triple by Shea. Brady followed
with another RBI triple to score Shea,
and Brady would come home on a
sacrifice fly by Lengyel. The
Greyhounds extended their lead to 10-0 in the top of the sixth inning with four
more runs. Freshman third baseman Jason
Huber (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) drew a walk to lead off the inning for
Moravian, and he moved to second when junior catcher Michael LaVerghetta (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) was hit
by a pitch. Stout then delivered an RBI single to score Huber from second base. Shea

Softball – 1-3 (Landmark Conference 0-0)
Moravian, ranked sixth in the nation in the NFCA
Division III Preseason Top 25, opened its 2008 season with a 3-1 victory over
Methodist (NC) University in the first game of the Beach Bash. The tournament
was delayed as a new complex had to be found after the fields in Virginia Beach
were deemed unplayable. The games were moved to Portsmouth, Virginia. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the
top of the fourth inning. Junior outfielder Erica Klepeisz (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) led off the inning with a
single and moved to second base on a fielder's choice by senior shortstop Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS).
Methodist attempted to get Klepeisz
at second base by she beat the throw. Junior first baseman Sheri Bieniek (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley HS) followed with an
RBI single down the left field line to score Klepeisz and move Paly
to second. After an out, junior catcher Deanna
Mangieri (Pleasantville, NY/Byram Hills HS) had an infield single to load
the bases for Moravian. Paly would
get thrown out at home on a fielder's choice by senior third baseman Kelly Santry (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland HS),
but Bieniek would score what ended
up being the winning run on a wild pitch. Methodist would cut the Moravian lead in half
in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Greyhounds added an insurance run in
the top of the fifth inning when Klepeisz
connected on a sacrifice fly to score senior outfielder Megan Ritchey (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown HS), who had led off the
inning with an infield single. Moravian had six hits in the game, all singles
by different players while Methodist was limited to four singles. Greyhound
freshman Elizabeth Python (Huntington
Station, NY/Walt Whitman HS) earned her first collegiate victory in the
circle, tossing a complete game with four hits, one run and two walks allowed.
The Greyhounds dropped their first game of the
season, falling to former conference rival Messiah College, 6-4, in
non-conference action on the first day of the Beach Bash. The tournament was
delayed as a new complex had to be found after the fields in Virginia Beach
were deemed unplayable. The games were moved to Portsmouth, Virginia. Moravian
jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Bieniek led off the inning with an
infield single to third base. After a ground out, Bieniek would move to third on a single by Mangieri and eventually scored on a dropped fly ball hit by Santry.
The Falcons responded with three unearned runs on the top of the third
inning. The Greyhounds would pull within a run, 3-2, in the bottom of the
fourth inning when Ritchey led off
with a single and scored on an RBI ground out by freshman designated player Maura Agnew (Doylestown, PA/Lansdale
Catholic). Messiah scored the next three runs to seal the victory. The
Falcons scored once in the top of the fifth inning and twice in the top of the
sixth inning. Moravian finished off the scoring in the bottom of the seventh
inning on a two-RBI single by Paly
that scored Agnew and freshman
second baseman Stephanie Falzarano (South
Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield HS). The Greyhounds had eight hits in the
game with freshman outfielder Amanda
Paulus (Easton, PA/Easton HS) hitting her first collegiate double. The
Falcons had seven hits in the contest. Moravian
junior Maria DeBonis (Nazareth, PA/Notre
Dame HS) suffered the loss in the circle for the Greyhounds. DeBonis allowed six runs, just three of
them earned, on seven hits and four walks while striking out 11 batters.
Moravian dropped its second straight game, opening
the second day of the 2008 Beach Bash in Virginia Beach with a 3-1 loss to
Rowan (NJ) University at Princess Anne Park. The Greyhounds dropped to 1-2 on
the season, and the last time Moravian was below .500 after the first day of
the season was in 1997 when the Greyhounds were 2-3 in a season opening
tournament in North Carolina. The Profs would score three times in the top of
the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Moravian answered with a run in the
bottom of the second when Mangieri
doubled to left centerfield with two outs. Mangieri
would move to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Santry, who would move to third on the
play after an error in the Rowan outfield. The Greyhounds were limited to just
five hits in the game with two by Santry.
The Profs collected eight hits. Python suffered her first loss of the
season in the circle, allowing three runs, just two earned, on eight hits and a
walk while striking out two batters.
The Greyhounds dropped their third straight game in a
battle of teams ranked in the NFCA Division III Top 25 preseason poll, as
sixth-ranked Moravian fell to #11th-ranked Lynchburg (VA) College, 6-5 in nine
innings, the teams' final game at the Beach Bash at Princess Anne Park in
Virginia Beach. The three-game losing streak is Moravian's longest since losing
three in a row back in April of 2005. The
Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Moravian would
cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth inning when DeBonis led off the inning with her
first home run of the season and the fifth of her career, a shot to center
field. The Greyhounds took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the
sixth inning. Bieniek led off the
inning with a solo homer to center field, her first of the season and 11th of
her career. After an out, Maura Agnew
connected on her first collegiate home run, a solo shot to center field. Lynchburg
retook the lead in the top of the seventh inning with three runs to build a 5-3
advantage. The Greyhounds would score
twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5 and force
extra innings. Bieniek would drive
in the first run with a bases loaded ground out that plated Klepeisz, who had drawn a walk to start
the inning. Mangieri then hit an RBI
single to center field that scored Ritchey,
who had reached on a fielder's choice. Moravian would reload the bases with
just one out but left all three runners on base for the second time in the
game. Since the game was part of a tournament, the teams immediately went to
the international tiebreaker of placing a runner on second base at the start of
the eighth inning. Neither team would score in the eighth inning. Lynchburg
would break the tie in the top of the ninth inning on a suicide squeeze bunt.
The Greyhounds would strand a runner at third base, the team's 11th runner left
on base in the game, in the bottom of the ninth inning. Lynchburg had just five
hits in the game. Moravian had eight hits in the contest with Mangieri and Falzarano each collecting two hits.
DeBonis dropped to 0-2 in the
circle for Moravian, allowing six runs, just three of them earned, on five hits
and five walks, one of them intentional, with six strikeouts.
