Greyhound Weekly Update,
March 24, 2008 (-3333-)
Women’s Lacrosse – 3-2 (Landmark Conference 0-0)
The Greyhounds non-conference match at Arcadia University for Thursday, March 20th has been postponed due to poor field conditions. The contest has been rescheduled for Monday, March 31st at 4:00 p.m. at Arcadia.
Moravian won its second home match of the season and moved over .500 five matches into the season for the first time in the brief six-year history of the program with a 20-16 non-conference win over NCAA Division II Chestnut Hill College on the HUB Quad. The three victories also equal the most in a single season for the Greyhound program in the six years the sport has had varsity status. The 20 goals are also the most Moravian has scored in a single match since the program began.
Moravian jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:11 in the contest on a goal by sophomore attack Jillian Pagliei (Ivyland, PA/Council Rock North). The match would remain close with the Griffins tying the score twice at 1-1 and 3-3. Moravian would take the lead for good, 4-3, on a goal by sophomore midfielder Lynda Kauffman (Boothwyn, PA/Chichester) at the 10:21 mark. The Greyhounds largest lead of the game was 11-6 late in the first half, and Moravian headed to the intermission with a 12-8 advantage. In the second half, the closest Chestnut Hill would get was two goals at 17-15 with just under nine minutes remaining in the contest. Moravian had a 44-30 advantage in shots and a 31-17 edge in ground balls while both teams won 19 draw controls.
Kauffman led the Greyhounds with a career high nine points, just one shy of the single match record, with six goals and three assists, which tied the school mark. Senior midfielder Erica Spatz (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) also netted six goals for Moravian to go with an assist, five ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers. Kauffman had a team high five draw controls while Pagliei had two goals, four ground balls and three draw controls. Junior attack Georgia Castellano (Cherry Hills, NJ/Cherry Hill West) and senior midfielder Casey Simpson () each found the back of the cage twice in the Greyhound victory while sophomore midfielder Paige Warbrick (Souderton, PA/Souderton Area) and freshman midfielder Sarah Carman (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) each had goals. Freshman midfielder Maureen Helfers (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) added an assist while Carman added five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Courtney Rosenberg (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May Regional) had seven saves in just over 42 minutes of action for Moravian while freshman keeper Angel Genther (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) had two saves in the other 18 minutes.

Greyhound Weekly Update, March 17, 2008 (-4444-)
Baseball – 12-5 (Landmark Conference 3-2)
Moravian snapped a three-game losing streak with an 8-3
victory over rival Muhlenberg College in non-conference action at Cedarcreek Field. The Greyhounds would jump out to a 3-0
lead in the top of the second inning. Junior first baseman Joseph Durso (Middletown, NJ/Christian
Brother Academy) led off the inning with a single through the left side of
the infield and junior designated hitter Thomas
Czarnecki (Columbia, NJ/North Warren) singled through the right side. Durso and Czarnecki moved into scoring position
on a passed ball, and after freshman catcher Jon Baltz (Easton, PA/Easton) was hit by
a pitch, senior second baseman Brett
Stout (Easton, PA/Easton) hit a two-RBI single up the middle to score Durso and Czarnecki. Junior outfielder Eric Shea (Madison, NJ/Morristown Beard)
would deliver a two-out RBI single to right center field to score junior Michael LaVerghetta
(Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh), who had come into run for Baltz.
Moravian
extended its lead to 6-0 with three more runs in the top of the third inning.
Junior shortstop Kevin Gambrino (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) singled with one
out and moved up to second base when Durso was hit by a pitch. After a grounder by Czarnecki that saw everyone safe and
load the bases for the Greyhounds, Gambrino scored on a wild pitch and Durso crossed the plate on a
balk. Czarnecki would score the
final run of the inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by LaVerghetta.
The
Greyhounds added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to build an 8-0
lead. LaVerghetta
led off with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stout. Shea hit an RBI single through the left side with two outs to score
LaVerghette
with Shea moving to second on the
throw home. Shea would steal third
base and score on an RBI double by freshman third baseman Jason Huber (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty).
The Mules
would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning with a single
run on a two-out, RBI single by Christian Conti that scored Clint Lynch, who
had reached on a Moravian error to lead off the inning.
Muhlenberg
added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. John Kalis led off the inning with a single to left field and
moved to second on a wild pitch. Kalis then moved to
third on a fly out by Joseph DeCecilia before scoring
on an RBI infield single by Lynch. Another Moravian error on a ground ball hit
by Mario Fiorentini would allow Lynch to move to
third base where he scored from on an RBI single to center field by Eric
Hammond.
Moravian
had ten hits in the game with Shea
going three-for-five and Stout going
two-for-three to lead the Greyhounds. Both Shea
and Stout also had two RBIs. The
Mules had ten hits in the contest with Hammond going three-for-five and Bobby Spindler collecting two hits.
Greyhound
senior pitcher Trevor Lawrence
(Lansford, PA/Marian Catholic) earned his first victory of the season on
the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing just four hits and two walks while
striking out two batters in a predetermined four innings of action. Junior Thomas Murray (Staten Island, NY/Moore
Catholic) tossed two innings for Moravian allowing an unearned run on two
hits and three walks while striking out four Mules. Sophomore Andrew DelRossi
(Medford, NJ/Bishop Eustace) allowed a hit in an inning on the mound for
the Greyhounds while sophomore Philip
Spence (Lafayette, NJ/Newton) gave up two runs, just one earned on three
hits and three strikeouts while pitching the final two innings of the game.
The
Greyhounds' non-conference game versus Keystone College at Gillespie Field for
Wednesday, March 19th has been postponed due to inclement weather and poor
field conditions. The game has not been rescheduled at this time.
The
Greyhounds won their first Landmark Conference game of the 2008 season,
defeating the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 15-9, in a game shortened
to seven innings due to darkness to open the three-game Landmark Conference
series. Even though Moravian had batted in the eighth inning, NCAA rules
dictate that the game revert back to the end of the seventh inning and no
statistics count from the eighth since the Mariners were unable to complete
their at-bat before darkness forced the umpires to call the game.
Moravian
jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Junior outfielder Eric Shea drew walk to lead off the
game and stole second base. Junior shortstop Kevin Gambrino would reach on an error
with one out but was thrown out on the play as Shea scored. Junior first baseman Joseph Durso then connected on a solo
home run to right center field, his first homer of the season.
U.S.
Merchant Marine would tie the game with a pair of runs in the bottom half of
the first inning. Mike Bybee would hit an RBI single
up the middle for the Mariners while Brandon Scott hit an RBI sacrifice fly to
score the other run.
The
Greyhounds would retake a two-run lead in the top of the second inning.
Sophomore outfielder Brad Bodine (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor) reached on an
error to lead off the inning and eventually scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by
senior second baseman Brett Stout. Shea would then reach on an error by
the Mariners that allowed freshman third baseman Jake Schweitzer (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) to score. Schweitzer had singled through the
right side earlier in the inning.
Again, U.S.
Merchant Marine tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom half of the second inning
with two more runs with Bybee driving in both runs
with a two-RBI double.
Moravian
took the lead for good with five runs in the top of the third inning to build a
9-4 lead. Gambrino
and Durso
both walked to lead off the inning and wild pitches would put them at second
and third. Junior outfielder Josh Hinkle
(Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) hit a two-RBI double to left
field to score Gambrino
and Durso,
and Hinkle would move to third on
another wild pitch. Hinkle
eventually scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Schweitzer that also moved Bodine,
who had walked and stole second base, to third. Junior catcher Thomas Czarnecki then followed with an
RBI single down the left field line to score Bodine, and Czarnecki
would cross the plate on an RBI single up the middle by Shea.
The
Greyhounds would add another run in the top of the fifth inning for a 10-4
lead. Schweitzer would lead off the
inning by reaching on a U.S. Merchant Marine error and then move to second on a
ground out by Czarnecki. After a
wild pitch moved Schweitzer to third
base, he scored on an RBI single up the middle by Shea.
The
Mariners would cut the Moravian lead to 10-6 with a pair of runs in the bottom
half of the fifth inning. Dylan Tumblin had an RBI
double while Alex Wolfe added an RBI single for U.S. Merchant Marine.
Moravian
pushed three runs across the plate in the top of the sixth inning to take a
13-6 lead. Durso
singled up the middle to lead off the inning, and Bodine singled with one out to put a pair of runners on base. Schweitzer then singled up the middle
and an error in the Mariner outfield allowed all three Greyhounds to score.
U.S.
Merchant Marine would get the three runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning
cutting the Greyhound advantage back to 13-9, which ended up being the final
score. Bybee had an RBI single for the Mariners while
the other two runs scored on a Moravian error on a ball hit by Brandon Scott.
The
Greyhounds would add two more runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 15-9
lead. Durso
hit his second double of the game with an out, and Hinkle reached on a error by the Mariners,
their seventh of the game. A wild pitch moved Durso and Hinkle up 90 feet
where Durso
scored on an RBI ground out by Bodine.
Hinkle came across the plate on
another wild pitch to finish off the scoring.
U.S.
Merchant Marine did not complete the bottom half of the eighth inning before
the umpires called the game for darkness at 7:10 p.m., NCAA rules stipulate
that the eighth inning doesn't count and the game reverts back to the end of
the seventh inning since the second team at-bat was trailing and didn't
complete the inning.
Moravian
had 13 hits in the game with Durso going four-for-four, and Shea, Schweitzer and Stout each collecting two hits. U.S.
Merchant Marine had ten hits in the contest with Bybee
going three-for-four with four RBIs.
Sophomore Joe Melchionna
(Marlboro, NJ/St. John Vianney) improved to 4-1
on the mound this season for the Greyhounds, allowing six runs, just two of
them earned, on nine hits and a walk with four strikeouts in five innings of
action. Sophomore Zachary Andes (Moscow,
PA/North Pocono) tossed two innings for Moravian, allowing three runs, none
of them earned, on a hit and three walks with one strikeout.
Moravian
won its third straight game and opened a Landmark Conference doubleheader at
the United States Merchant Marine Academy with a 12-4 victory. The Greyhounds
jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning and would not trail in
the game. Junior outfielder Eric Shea
hit an infield single to lead off the contest before freshman designated hitter
Jason Huber singled through the
right side. Junior shortstop Kevin Gambrino drew a walk to load the bases for Moravian to
set up a two-RBI double by junior first baseman Joseph Durso that scored Shea and Huber. Junior outfielder Josh
Hinkle was hit by a pitch to load the bases again for the Greyhounds before
sophomore outfielder Brad Bodine
grounded into an RBI fielder's choice scoring Gambrino. Freshman catcher Jon Baltz
also hit into an RBI fielder's choice to score Durso with the final run of the
inning.
The
Mariners would get on the scoreboard with three runs in the bottom of the third
inning to cut Moravian's lead to 4-3. Mike Bybee hit
a two-RBI single for U.S. Merchant Marine while the final run of the inning
scored on a Moravian error.
The contest
was scoreless until the Greyhounds erupted for seven runs in the top of the
fifth inning, the second time this season that Moravian has scored seven runs
in an inning. Durso
led off the inning with a single through the right side of the infield and
moved to second on a passed ball. Hinkle
followed with an RBI double to left centerfield to score Durso, and Hinkle would cross the plate on an RBI infield single by Bodine. Bodine would move over to second base on a passed ball and scored
on an RBI double to left centerfield by freshman third baseman Jake Schweitzer. Senior second baseman Brett Stout followed with an RBI double
to center field scoring Schweitzer,
and Stout, who advanced to third
base on a wild pitch, crossed the plate as the Mariners attempted to through out Shea,
who stole second base after drawing a walk. Shea eventually scored on an RBI single to left field by Durso, and Gambrino would
score the final run of the inning on an RBI single up the middle by Hinkle.
Moravian
extended its lead to 12-3 with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Baltz led of the inning with a single to left field and moved to
second on an error in the Mariner outfield. A ground out by Schweitzer moved Baltz to third where he scored
on an RBI single to right field by Stout.
U.S.
Merchant Marine would score once in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI
single by Jeff Schwind. The Mariners had nine hits in
the game with Schwind going two-for-three. The
Greyhounds pounded out a season high 17 hits in the victory led by Durso, who was
four-for-five with three RBIs and the 24th double of his career. Hinkle was three-for-four while Shea, Schweitzer and Stout
were each two-for-four for Moravian.
Greyhound
sophomore Christopher Morrison
(Middlesex, NJ/Immaculata) improved to 3-1 on the mound this season,
allowing three runs, two of them earned, on six hits and three walks with a
career high nine strikeouts in five innings of action. Junior Thomas Murray tossed the final two
innings for Moravian, giving up an unearned run on three hits.
The
Greyhounds earned a sweep of a Landmark Conference doubleheader and a
three-game series at the United States Merchant Marine Academy with an 11-5
victory. The win was the fourth straight for Moravian.
Moravian
took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when junior outfielder Eric Shea doubled to left centerfield
to lead off the game, moved to third on a ground out by junior outfielder Josh Hinkle and scored on an RBI
sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Kevin Gambrino.
The
Mariners tied the game in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI ground out
by Brad Rakoce. U.S. Merchant Marine would take its
first lead of the three-game series with a pair of runs in the bottom of the
fourth inning to lead 3-1. Dylan Tumblin and Rakoce had RBI singles in the inning for the Mariners.
The
Greyhounds cut the lead back to 3-2 with a run in the top of the fifth inning.
Sophomore outfielder David Lengyel (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) led off the inning with
a single up the middle, and he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman
third baseman Jake Schweitzer.
Freshman catcher Jon Baltz
then connected on an RBI single up the middle to score Lengyel.
U.S.
Merchant Marine extended its lead to 5-2 with two more runs in the bottom of
the fifth inning. Brandon Scott had an RBI single for the Mariners while Tumblin had an RBI sacrifice fly.
Moravian
would retake its lead, 7-5, with a five-run sixth inning. Gambrino doubled to left field
with two outs and no one on base to start the five-run rally for the
Greyhounds. Durso
hit an RBI single up the middle to score Gambrino, and Lengyel followed
with an RBI. Schweitzer struck out
swinging but the ball got away from the Mariner catcher and with Durso and Lengyel running
on the pitch, the throw to first sailed into right field allowing Durso to score. Baltz followed
with a ground ball to the left side of the infield but a pair of U.S. Merchant
Marine errors allowed Baltz to reach second base and Lengyel and
Schweitzer to score. Baltz would cross the plate when sophomore designated hitter
Brad Bodine reached on the Mariners'
fourth error of the inning.
The
Greyhounds added four more runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 11-5
lead. Hinkle doubled to left centerfield
with one out to get Moravian going, and he scored on an RBI single up the
middle by Gambrino.
Durso was
hit by a pitch before he and Gambrino pulled off a double steal. Lengyel would reach on a U.S.
Merchant Marine error that scored Gambrino. Durso crossed the plate when the Mariners attempted to throw
out Lengyel,
who stole second base. Lengyel
would eventually steal home for the final run of the game.
Moravian
had eight hits in the game Gambrino going two-for-three with two RBIs and Lengyel going
two-for-four. U.S. Merchant Marine pounded out 11 hits in the contest with
Scott going four-for-four.
Senior Trevor Lawrence started on the mound
for the Greyhounds, allowing five runs, four of them earned, on eight hits with
one strikeout in 4 1/3 innings. Sophomore Brandon
Palmisano (Mountainhome,
PA/Pius X) improved to 2-1 on the year for Moravian, picking up the victory
in 2 2/3 innings of action. Palmisano gave up just two hits while striking out two
batters.
