Greyhound Weekly Update, April 28, 2008 (-2222-)
Men’s Track and Field – 0-0 (Landmark Conference 0-0)
Moravian had three first place finishers, three NCAA Division III provisional qualifiers and broke a school records on the first day of the 2008 Landmark Conference Outdoor Championships being hosted by the Greyhounds at Rocco Calvo Field and Timothy Breidegam Track. Moravian is in first place with 98 points while Susquehanna University is second at 93.5 points and Juniata College is third with 62 points.
Junior Blair Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) won a pair of events on the first day, capturing the shot put with a school record toss of 15.92 meters (50 feet, two inches) on his final throw of the competition and winning the discus with a toss of 41.27 meters (135 feet, five inches). Senior Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) won the long jump with an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying leap of 7.26 meters (23 feet, ten inches). Brown was also first in three preliminary events on the first day of the meet, placing first in the 100-meter dash in 10.69 seconds, the 200-meter dash in 22.12 seconds and the 110-meter high hurdles in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 14.60 seconds.
In other finals results from the first day of the meet, Brown was second in the high jump clearing 1.93 meters (six feet, four inches) and third in the shot put at 12.41 meters (40 feet, 8 3/4 inches). Junior Alan Woods (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff) took second in the pole vault by clearing 4.66 meters 915 feet, 3 1/2 inches) while senior Allan Fatzinger (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) took fourth at 4.05 meters (13 feet, 3 1/2 inches) and freshman Adam Pollini (Shamokin Dam, PA/Lewisburg) was seventh at 3.90 meters (12 feet, 9 1/2 inches). Sophomore Michael Blenk (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) took third in the long jump at 6.86 meters (22 feet, 6 1/4 inches).
Senior Nathaniel Dutile (Plymouth, ME/Nokomis) placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 12.28 meters (40 feet, 3 1/2 inches) while freshman Zachary Valentine (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) placed fifth at 11.76 meters (38 feet, seven inches). Junior Justin Starcher (Greentown, PA/Wallenpaupack) was fifth in the discus throw with a distance of 35.39 meters (116 feet, one inch) while sophomore Matthew Wisotsky (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) was seventh at 33.86 meters (111 feet, one inch). Senior Vince Pagano (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East) was sixth in the javelin with a toss of 46.96 meters (154 feet, one inch) while Starcher placed seventh at 46.60 meters (152 feet, 11 inches).
In the distance races, junior Jeremiah Reinhart (Doylestown, PA/Pleasant Valley) took fourth in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:06.28, and he was fourth in the 10,000-meter run in 34:03.42. Freshman Connor Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) was sixth in the 1,500-meter run in 4:08.12 while senior Timothy Pagano (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East) was tenth in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 35:28.78.
Blenk currently sits in first place of the men's decathlon after five events with 3,264 points. Fatzinger is in third with 2,751 points while junior Jared Henrie (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) is fourth at 2,671 points. Blenk was first in the 100-meter dash in 11.63 seconds for 665 points, and he took first in the long jump at 6.80 meters (22 feet, 3 3/4 inches) for 767 points, fifth in the shot put at 8.76 meters (28 feet, nine inches) for 411 points, first in the high jump at 1.88 meters (six feet, two inches) for 696 points and first in the 400-meter dash in 53.38 seconds for 665 points.
Fatzinger was third in the 100-meter dash in 11.87 seconds for 677 points, third in the long jump at 5.87 meters 919 feet, 3 1/4 inches) for 559 points, second in the shot put at 9.54 meters (31 feet, 3 3/4 inches) for 458 points, fourth in the high jump at 1.61 meters (five feet, 3 1/4 inches) for 472 points and third in the 400-meter dash in 55.34 seconds for 585 points. Henrie was second in the 100-meter dash in 11.83 seconds for 685 points, fourth in the long jump at 5.72 meters (18 feet, 9 1/4 inches) for 527 points, sixth in the shot put at 8.50 meters (27 feet, 10 3/4 inches) for 396 points, sixth in the high jump at 1.52 meters (four feet, 11 3/4 inches) for 404 points and second in the 400-meter dash in 53.53 seconds for 659 points.
In other preliminary action,
junior Robert Shaffer (Pottsville,
PA/Pottsville) and senior James Bell
(Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) qualified for the 100-meter dash finals with
times of 10.82 seconds and 11.15 seconds while placing second and fourth. In
the 200-meter dash, Moravian put four other runners in the finals in addition
to Brown with freshman Eric Woodruff (Brodheadsville, PA/Pius X)
winning his heat and placing second in 22.21 seconds, freshman Warner Jones (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough)
in third at 22.27 seconds, Shaffer
in fifth at 22.53 seconds and Bell
in sixth at 22.60 seconds. Senior Nathaniel
Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown Area) was second in the preliminaries
for the 400-meter dash in 50.33 seconds while Jones took third in 51.20 seconds
to advance to the finals. Tussey
also advanced to the finals with a second place finish in the 110-meter high
hurdles in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 14.75 seconds
while Blenk
reached the finals with a time of 15.82 seconds.
Moravian won the team title,
had eight first place individual finishers, two relay teams finish in first and
five NCAA Division III provisional qualifiers on the second of the 2008
Landmark Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by the Greyhounds at Rocco
Calvo Field and Timothy Breidegam Track. Moravian won with a team score of 277
points, 33.5 points ahead of runner-up Susquehanna University. Juniata College
placed third with 151 points while The Catholic University of America was fourth
with 52 points. Senior Ozzie Brown
was named the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet while junior Blair Maginnis was honored as the
Co-Men's Field Athlete of the Meet. Moravian head coach Walter Wandall and his staff was named the Men's Coaching Staff of
the Meet.
The Greyhounds had a pair of multiple winners on the second day of the meet with Brown and senior Nathaniel Tussey each winning more than two events. Brown captured the 100-meter dash in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 10.73 seconds, the 200-meter dash in a stadium record and NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 21.56 seconds and the 110-meter high hurdles in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 14.49 seconds. Tussey captured the 400-meter dash in 49.12 seconds and the 400-meter hurdles in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 53.28 seconds. Tussey also posted an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 14.53 seconds while finishing as the runner-up in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Moravian's other individual champions were sophomore Michael Blenk in the decathlon with a point total of 5,830, freshman Troy Bertholf (Liberty, NY/Liberty) in the hammer throw with a toss of 41.94 meters (137 feet, seven inches) and freshman Connor Skutches in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.23. The Greyhounds swept the relays with the 4x100-meter relay squad of Brown, senior James Bell, junior Robert Shaffer and freshman Warner Jones posting a winning time of 42.47 seconds and the 4x400-meter relay team of Brown, Tussey, Skutches and Jones with a first-place time of 3:18.96.

Men’s Lacrosse – 4-12 (Landmark Conference 0-6)
The Greyhounds dropped their
final non-conference match of the 2008 season, falling to rival Muhlenberg,
17-6, at Scotty Wood Stadium. The loss also gave the two schools nine wins in
their annual Matte Award competition to end the year in a tie. The Mules jumped
out to a 1-0 lead before Moravian tied the contest at 1-1 on a goal by freshman
midfielder David Forte (Chester, NJ/West
Morris Mendham) midway through the first quarter. However, Muhlenberg would
lead, 5-2, after 15 minutes. The Greyhounds scored two quick goals to start the
second quarter with tallies by junior midfielder Brian Cleaver (Allentown, PA/Parkland) and freshman attack David Bennett (Easton, PA/Easton) to
pull within 5-4 with 12:52 to go in the second quarter. The Mules responded
with 11 straight goals to take control of the contest. Moravian did not score
again until junior attack Jason Tosches (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South)
netted a man-down goal with 51 seconds remaining in the third quarter to make
the score 16-5. Muhlenberg had a 53-22 advantage in shots, a 46-34 edge in
ground balls and won 18 of 27 face-offs. Cleaver
led the Greyhounds with two goals and an assists while freshman midfielder Robert Devine (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain
Lakes) had a goal and two assists to go with four ground balls and nine of
22 on face-offs. Bennett finished
with a goal and an assist while Tosches and Forte
each had a goal. Senior defender David
Poppe (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) led Moravian with seven ground balls while
junior defender Steven Carroll (West
Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) added five ground balls. Freshman goalie Benjamin Leavy (Moorestown,
NJ/Moorestown) had 14 saves for the Greyhounds, to reach 200 saves for the
season, and he added two ground balls.
Moravian lost its final match
of the 2008 season, falling to The Catholic University of America, 16-5, in
Landmark Conference action. The Cardinals jumped out toa
3-0 lead and led 5-2 after 15 minutes. Catholic would also lead 8-4 at halftime
and 14-4 after three quarters. The Cardinals had a 39-23 advantage in shots, a
23-13 edge in ground balls and won 14 of 22 face-offs in the match. Moravian
junior attack Jason Tosches
led the squad with two goals and an assist for three points while junior
midfielder Brian Cleaver added two
goals. Freshman attack David Bennett
found the back of the net once while junior defender Steven Carroll had an assist. Freshman midfielder David Forte had a team high four ground
balls and won four of ten face-offs for Moravian while sophomore defender Kevin Smart (Drexel Hill, PA/Archbishop
Carroll) had three ground balls and was three of eight on face-offs.
Freshman goalie Benjamin Leavy had eight saves for the Greyhounds.

Women’s Track and Field – 0-0 (Landmark Conference 0-0)
Moravian
had three first place finishers, five NCAA Division III provisional qualifiers
and set one school record on the first day of the 2008 Landmark Conference
Outdoor Championships being hosted by the Greyhounds at Rocco Calvo Field and
Timothy Breidegam Track. Moravian is in first place with 109.5 points while
Susquehanna University is second at 101 points and The Catholic University of
America is third with 41 points.
Sophomore
Symonne Scott (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) won
the long jump with an NCAA Division III provisionally qualifying distance of
5.57 meters (18 feet, 3 1/4 inches) while sophomore Anna Heim (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) won the pole vault at an NCAA
Division III provisional qualifying height of 3.70 meters (12 feet, 1 1/2
inches). Freshman Mary King (Paramus,
NJ/Paramus) captured the javelin with an NCAA Division III provisional
qualifying toss of 41.41 meters (135 feet, ten inches). Junior Christine Kihm (Quakertown,
PA/Quakertown) also hit the NCAA Division III provisionally qualifying mark
with a second place finish in the pole vault at 3.55 meters (11 feet, 7 3/4
inches) while sophomore Jessica Posimo (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) hit the
NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time and set the school record in the
preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles in 14.77 seconds.
Junior
Thea Kennerknecht
(Central Valley, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) was third in the pole vault at 3.25
meters (ten feet, eight inches) while Posimo was the runner-up in the long jump at 5.42 meters (17
feet, 9 1/2 inches). Sophomore Rachel
Riggs (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) was fifth in the long jump with a leap of
5.19 meters (17 feet, 1/2 inch) while freshman Syndi Wisniewski (Orlando, FL/Winter Park) took sixth at 5.18 meters (17
feet), freshman Alexandra Lopez
(Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan) was tied for eighth at 5.06 meters 916 feet, 7
1/4 inches) and freshman Shannon McEvoy (Lafayette, NJ/High Point Regional) was tenth at
4.91 meters (16 feet, 1 1/2 inches). Posimo also finished third in the high jump, clearing 1.47
meters (four feet, 9 3/4 inches) while Scott was fourth and Wisniewski was fifth in the high jump
at the same height.
In
the throwing events, freshman Kaleen
Holden (Scranton, PA/Bishop Hannan) was the
runner-up in the javelin throw with a toss of 38.34 meters (125 feet, nine
inches) while sophomore Flora Robertson
(Hawley, PA/East Stroudsburg North) took sixth at 31.45 meters (103 feet,
two inches), sophomore Aliina Ross (Paoli, PA/Conestoga) was seventh
at 31.34 meters (102 feet, ten inches) and Heim
placed ninth at 27.98 meters (15 feet, nine inches). Robertson was fifth in the shot put with a toss of 9.54 meters (31
feet, 3 3/4 inches) while freshman Molly
DuVall (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) was
eighth at 8.86 meters (29 feet, one inch). DuVall also took ninth in the
discus with a toss of 25.08 meters (82 feet, three inches) while Robertson was tenth at 24.40 meters (80
feet, one inch).
Junior
Kayla Teeling
(Milford, NJ/Phillipsburg) took third in the 1,500-meter run in 4:56.45
while freshman Tara Chiarella
(Hallstead, PA/Montrose Area) was third in the 10,000-meter run in
40:26.56. Senior Katie Pullizano (Allentown, PA/William Allen) took fourth in
the 10,000-meter run in a time of 41:32.28.
In
preliminary action, sophomore Rachel
Beck (Churchville, PA/Council Rock South) qualified first in the 100-meter
dash in 12.45 seconds and will be joined in the finals by Wisniewski, who was second at 12.52 seconds, Scott, who took third in 12.70 seconds, Posimo, who placed fourth in
12.78 seconds and Riggs, who
finished seventh in 13.19 seconds. Wisniewski
won the 200-meter dash reliminaries in 25.49 seconds
while Beck took second in 26.04 seconds, Scott was third at 25.57 seconds, Posimo in fourth
at 26.14 seconds and freshman Alyssa
Wert (Orefield, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) in seventh place at 26.91
seconds all reached the final.
Wisniewski also won the 400-meter dash preliminary in 1:00.38
while sophomore Katelyn Chando (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) took second at
1:01.15 and Wert was fifth in
1:02.57 to advance to the finals. Posimo will be joined in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles
by McEvoy,
who was second in 15.44 seconds, and Lopez, who finished sixth at 16.64
seconds.
Moravian won the team title, had six

was honored as the Women's Track Athlete of the Meet while Greyhound head coach
Walter Wandall and his staff was
named the Women's Coaching Staff of the Meet.
Wisniewski won three events by capturing the 100-meter dash in
12.60 seconds, the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.67 seconds and the 400-meter
dash in a school record time of 58.40 seconds. Sophomore Jessica Posimo captured the triple jump
with a distance of 10.72 meters (35 feet, two inches) and the 100-meter hurdles
in a time of 15.08 seconds. Sophomore Anna
Heim won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.28.
The
Greyhounds 4x100-meter relay team of Wisniewski,
Posimo and
sophomores Rachel Beck and Symonne Scott was first in an NCAA Division
III provisional qualifying time of 48.36 seconds. The Moravian 4x400-meter
relay squad of Wisniewski, Posimo, Heim and sophomore Katelyn Chando won in a time of 3:59.83

Women’s Lacrosse – 9-7 (Landmark Conference 0-5)
The Greyhounds won their final home match of the season and assured the program its first-ever winning season with a 25-10 non-conference victory over Alvernia College on the HUB Quad. Moravian is now 9-6 on the year with one contest remaining. In the first five years of the program, the Greyhounds had never won more than three matches, and the 25 goals against Alvernia mark a single match record. Moravian also had a record 12 different players score a goal in the match.
Moravian jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by senior attack Jessica Bodine (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and sophomore midfielder Lynda Kauffman (Boothwyn, PA/Chichester). However, the Crusaders answered right back to tie the contest at 2-2. The Greyhounds would net the next six goals to build an 8-2 lead before Alvernia scored three straight to cut the Moravian advantage to 8-5. The Greyhounds netted the next four goals to lead 12-5 at halftime. The Crusaders put the first goal in of the second half but would not get any closer. Moravian had a 59-27 advantage in shots, a 37-22 edge in ground balls and a 21-15 edge in draw controls.
Senior midfielder Erica Spatz (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) led the Greyhounds with five goals and two assists for 17 points. Her fifth and final goal was the 100th of her career, the third player in school history to reach 100 career goals. She also tied the school mark with 20 career assists. Bodine and sophomore attack Jillian Pagliei (Ivyland, PA/Council Rock North) each had three goals and an assist for Moravian while Kauffman netted three goals to reach the 50-goal plateau for her career. Sophomore midfielder Paige Warbrick (Souderton, PA/Souderton Area) had two goals and an assist while senior midfielder Casey Simpson (Laporte, PA/Sullivan County) and junior attack Georgia Castellano (Cherry Hills, NJ/Cherry Hill West) each had two goals.
Sophomore defender Brittany Deiling (Chews Landing, NJ/Triton Regional) and freshman midfielder Maureen Helfers (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) each had a goal and an assist for the Greyhounds while senior defender Robyn Klem (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic), freshman midfielder Sarah Carman (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) and sophomore defender Katie Wise (Ardsley, PA/Abington) each found the back of the net once for Moravian. Spatz led Moravian with five ground balls and four draw controls while Wise had four ground balls and five draw controls. Carman contributed four draw controls and three ground balls while Deiling had three draw controls. Klem and Simpson each had four ground balls in their final home match while senior defender Marissa Moore (Bogota, NJ/Paramus Catholic) added three ground balls. Sophomore goalie Courtney Rosenberg (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May Regional) made ten saves for the Greyhounds.
Moravian closed out its 2008 season with a 13-10 loss at Susquehanna University in Landmark Conference action. The Crusaders scored two quick goals and led 11-4 at halftime. Susquehanna had a 50-31 advantage in shots and a 33-27 edge in ground balls while Moravian had a 16-9 advantage in draw controls.
Senior midfielder Erica Spatz led the Greyhounds with four goals, four ground balls and four draw controls while sophomore midfielder Lynda Kauffman had three goals and four draw controls. Sophomore midfielder Paige Warbrick added two goals and two assists while junior attack Georgia Castellano added a goal. Freshman midfielder Sarah Carman had a team high five ground balls for Moravian while sophomore defender Katie Wise added four ground balls and four draw controls. Sophomore goalie Courtney Rosenberg had 21 saves and five ground balls in the match.

Baseball – 17-21 (Landmark Conference 9-9)
The Greyhounds dropped their third straight
game, falling to local rival DeSales University, 16-4, in a night game played
at Limeport Stadium. Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 lead
in the top of the first inning. Junior outfielder Eric Shea (Madison, NJ/Morristown Beard) led off the game with a
walk and stole second base. Junior shortstop Kevin Gambrino (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan)
was hit by a pitch before a two-RBI double by junior first baseman Joseph Durso
(Middletown, NJ/Christian Brother Academy).
The
Bulldogs responded with a pair of runs to tie the game in the bottom of the
first inning on a two-RBI double by Scott Matejicka,
who was four-for-four in the game with six RBIs. DeSales took the lead for good
in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Matejicka.
Zac Hess had an RBI double and Andrew Feher added an RBI single as the Bulldogs built a 5-2 lead
after two innings. DeSales added single runs in the third and fourth innings
and two more in the bottom of the fifth for a 9-2 lead.
Moravian
would score once in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by
sophomore outfielder Brad Bodine (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor) that scored Shea, who had led off the inning with a
single. However, the Bulldogs scored seven times in the bottom half of the
inning for a 16-3 lead.
The
Greyhounds finished off the scoring with a run on the top of the ninth inning
when junior pinch hitter Michael LaVerghetta (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) scored
on a wild pitch. Moravian had seven hits in the game with Shea going
two-for-three and Durso
collecting two hits. DeSales had a total of 16 hits with Matejicka's
four hits leading the way. Hess added three hits while Feher,
Andrew Heard and Matt Connors each had two hits.
Moravian
used five pitchers in the game with sophomore Brandon Palmisano (Mountainhome,
PA/Pius X) taking the loss to drop to 2-3 on the season. Palmisano tossed
the first two innings, allowing five runs, just one of them earned, on six hits
and a walk
Moravian lost its final home game of the 2008 season,
falling to Keystone College, 19-3, in non-conference action at Gillespie Field.
The Giants would jump out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a
two-run homer by Cody Collins, an RBI single by Giovannie
Sanchez, an RBI single by Jayson Rohena, a double
steal with Rohena scoring and an RBI double by
Timothy Schemel.
Keystone
added four more runs in the top of the second inning for an 11-0 lead. Gomez
led off with a home run while Sanchez had an RBI sacrifice fly. Drew Boandl had an RBI double and the other run in the inning
scored on a Moravian throwing error.
The Giants
made the lead 13-0 in the top of the fifth inning on back-to-back home runs by
Gomez and Ben Fish on consecutive pitches. Keystone added a run in the top of
the sixth on an RBI single by Schemel, and the Giants
added five runs in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Ray
Jackson, an RBI groudn out by Kyle Conrad and a
two-RBI triple by Schemel, who scored on the play on
a Greyhound error, to build a 19-0 lead. The Giants had 19 hits in the game
with Gomez going four-for-six and Schemel going
four-for-seven with four RBIs.
Moravian
would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning. Freshman third
baseman Jason Huber (Bethlehem,
PA/Liberty) led off with a double and moved to third on an error in the
Keystone outfield. Freshman first baseman Jacob
Millen (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) followed with his first collegiate home run,
a two-run homer to left field.
The
Greyhounds added a run in the bottom of the ninth inning on an RBI sacrifice
fly by Millen that scored senior
second baseman Brett Stout (Easton,
PA/Easton), who had led off the inning with a walk. Moravian had just four
hits in the game with singles by sophomore outfielder Brad Bodine and junior designated hitter Thomas Czarnecki (Columbia, NJ/North Warren) to go with Huber and Millen's hits.
Moravian
used five pitchers in the contest with sophomore Keith Shaffer (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) taking the loss, allowing
11 runs, eight of them earned on 11 hits in the first two innings. Senior Matthew Swartz (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore)
tossed 3 2/3 innings with seven hits and three runs allowed to go with three
strikeouts while sophomore Andrew DeLio (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) pitched 1 1/3 innings
giving up five runs on five hits and a walk. Junior Thomas Murray (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) tossed the final
two innings for the Greyhounds, facing the minimum six batters with three
strikeouts.
The Greyhounds dropped the first game of a Landmark
Conference doubleheader at Juniata College, 6-1, to be eliminated from the race
for the final berths in the 2008 Landmark Conference Tournament. Moravian would
take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Sophomore outfielder Brad Bodine led off with a single and
moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore outfielder David Lengyel
(Bethlehem, PA/Freedom). After another out, freshman catcher Jon Baltz
(Easton, PA/Easton) hit an RBI single up the middle to score Bodine.
Juniata
tied the game in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Dane Ott, and the Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the
third on a solo home run from Adam Spadafora. Juniata
added two runs in the fourth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Ott
and an RBI double from Shawn McDonald, and the Eagles scored twice more in the
sixth inning on a two-RBI triple from Spadafora.
Moravian
was limited to three hits in the game with junior shortstop Kevin Gambrino
adding a single to go with Bodine
and Baltz's
hits. Juniata had ten hits with John Martinez going three-for-three and Spadafora going two-for-four. Sophomore Christopher Morrison (Middlesex,
NJ/Immaculata) went the distance on the mound for Moravian, allowing six
runs on ten hits and a walk with one strikeout.
Moravian
saw its losing streak fall to six games with a 4-0 loss to Juniata College in
the second game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader. The shutout was the
third time this season that the Greyhounds have failed to score in a game.
Juniata
would score singles runs in each of the first four innings of the game. Steve Wilk had an RBI sacrifice fly in the first while Kevin
Small added an RBI single in the second. Dane Ott had
an RBI single in the third inning while Greg Hoffman had an RBI tiple in the fourth. The Eagles had nine hits in the game
with John Martinez going two-for-three and Adam Spadafora
going two-for-four. Moravian was limited to two singles by juniors’ shortstop Kevin Gambrino
and first baseman Joseph Durso.
Senior Trevor Lawrence took the loss for the
Greyhounds, allowing four runs on nine hits and three walks with four
strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. The four strikeouts gave Lawrence 103 for his career, the seventh player in school history
to strike out at least 100 batters. Sophomore Zachary Andes (Moscow, PA/North Pocono) came on for the final out
of the game.
The Greyhounds closed out the 2008 season with a 10-8
victory at Juniata College in Landmark Conference action. The Eagles took a 2-0
lead in the bottom of the first inning on a Moravian error and an RBI double by
Steve Wilk.
Moravian
would score four runs in the top of the second inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Junior first baseman Joseph Durso walked to lead off the inning and sophomore outfielder
Brad Bodine followed with a single
through the left side. Freshman designated hitter Jacob Millen hit an RBI single to score Durso. Sophomore outfielder Andrew DeLio
reached on a bunt single that saw Bodine
cross the plate on a throwing error. Freshman catcher Jon Baltz would hit an RBI sacrifice fly
to score Millen while senior second
baseman Brett Stout had an RBI
single that scored DeLio.
The Greyhounds extended their lead to
5-3 with a run in the top of the third inning on four straight singles by Durso, Bodine, Millen and DeLio.
Juniata
scored once in the bottom of the third inning on a solo home run by Kevin Small
to cut the Moravian lead to 5-3. The Eagles would retake the lead with three
more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a three-run homer by Dan
Kauffman for a 6-5 lead.
Moravian
tied the contest in the top of the fifth inning when Bodine and Millen drew
walks and Bodine scored on a ground
out by DeLio.
The Greyhounds retook the lead for good with three runs in the top of the seventh
inning for a 9-6 lead. Sophomore outfielder David Lengyel singled to lead off the
inning and advanced to second on a throwing error. Durso followed with an RBI
double to score Lengyel.
Bodine singled through the left side
and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Millen hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Durso while DeLio had an RBI ground out to
score Bodine.
The
Greyhounds would score their final run in the top of the eighth inning to a
10-6 edge. Stout led off with a
single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior shortstop Kevin Gambrino.
After another out, Durso
connected on an RBI single to score Stout.
The hit gave Durso
50 for the season, just the second player in school history to reach 50 hits in
a season. Moravian had a total of 16 hits in the game with Stout, Durso
and Bodine each going
three-for-four. DeLio
and Millen each added two hits.
Juniata
would get two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on RBI singles by Andrew Kriss and Adam Spadafora. The
Eagles had nine hits in the game with two each by Spadafora,
Kauffman, Kriss and Wilk.
Sophomore Joe Melchionna
(Marlboro, NJ/St. John Vianney) earned his fifth
victory of the season for the Greyhounds with six runs, just four earned, on
six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in six innings of action. Senior Matthew Swartz tossed 1 1/3 innings giving up two runs on a walk and an strikeout. Sophomore Ryan
Cummings (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) earned his first save of the
season with 1 2/3 innings of relief with three hits allowed and one strikeout.

Softball – 30-6 (Landmark Conference 12-0)
Moravian opened a
non-conference doubleheader at Swarthmore College with a 7-0 victory. Junior
pitcher Maria DeBonis tossed her seventh shutout of
the season in the opener, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking
out nine batters.
The
Greyhounds would score six runs in the top of the fifth inning to take control
of the game. Junior outfielder Erica Klepeisz (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) led off the inning
with a single and moved to third on a bunt single by junior catcher Deanna Mangieri (Pleasantville, NY/Byram Hills). After freshman first baseman Jennifer Schmitt (Mendham, NJ/Mendham)
was hit by a pitch to load the bases, freshman outfielder Amanda Paulus (Easton, PA/Easton) singled
up the middle to drive in Klepeisz. Mangieri
was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice by freshman shortstop Stephanie Falzarano
(South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) before senior outfielder Megan Ritchey (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown)
hit an RBI single to score Schmitt. Senior second baseman Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) hit a
ground ball that everyone was safe on and scored Paulus. DeBonis hit an RBI single to
score Falzarano
while Santry
hit an RBI fielder's choice scoring Ritchey.
Klepeisz
drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Paly.
Moravian
would add a run in the top of the seventh inning when sophomore pinch hitter Danielle Massa (Livingston, NJ/Livingston)
singled, Klepeisz
singled and Mangieri connected on an
RBI double. The Greyhounds had 11 hits in the game with Klepeisz going two-for-three
while Mangieri was two-for-four.
The Greyhounds swept a
non-conference doubleheader at Swarthmore College with a 6-1 win in the second
game. Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman
outfielder Maura Agnew (Doylestown,
PA/Lansdale Catholic) hit a one-out double and scored on a Swarthmore
throwing error on a ball hit by senior second baseman Beth Paly.
Moravian
scored three times in the top of the third inning to build a 4-0 lead. Agnew hit a single with one out while
junior pitcher Maria DeBonis
would draw a two-out walk setting up a two-RBI double by senior third baseman Kelly Santry.
Junior outfielder Erica Klepeisz followed with an RBI double to score Santry.
Swarthmore
scored its only run of the doubleheader in the bottom of the fifth inning on an
RBI single by Krista Scheirer, one of five hits in
the game for Swarthmore.
The
Greyhounds would score three more runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Freshman Amanda Paulus
singled to lead off the inning and scored on a one-out, two-run home run by Agnew, her third homer of the season. Klepeiz added an
RBI single later in the inning to score DeBonis, who had reached on a fielder's choice. Moravian had
12 hits in the game with Agnew and Klepeisz each
going three-for-four. Santry
was two-for-four while freshman first baseman
Jennifer Schmitt. DeBonis
earned her second win of the doubleheader, allowing a run on five hits and a
walk with five strikeouts.
Moravian opened its final
doubleheader of the 2008 regular season with a 2-0 victory over Drew University
in Landmark Conference action at Blue & Grey Field behind the third perfect
game of the season by Greyhound junior pitcher Maria DeBonis. DeBonis faced the minimum 21
batters in her fourth no-hitter of the year, and she struck out nine batters.
The
Greyhounds would get all of the offense DeBonis needed in the bottom of the third inning. Junior
catcher Deanna Mangieri reached on
an error to start the inning and then scored on a one-out, two-run home run to
center field by senior outfielder Megan
Ritchey. The homer was Ritchey's
second of the season. Moravian had just three hits with singles by senior third
baseman Kelly Santry,
who left the game in the fourth inning with an injury, and junior first baseman
Sheri Bieniek
to go with Ritchey's homer.
The Greyhounds completed an
undefeated Landmark Conference season with a 4-0 victory over Drew University
in the second game of a conference twinbill at Blue
& Grey Field. The doubleheader sweep was Moravian's 13th of the season and
extended the team's current winning streak to five straight games. The
Greyhounds also reached the 30-win plateau for the seventh straight season as
the team improved to 30-6 on the year. Freshman
pitcher Elizabeth Python (Huntington
Station, NY/Walt Whitman) improved to 14-3 in the circle this season for
Moravian, allowing just three hits and striking out a season high nine batters
in the victory.
Moravian
would get all of its offense in the third inning when the Greyhounds scored
four times with two outs. Freshman outfielder Amanda Paulus singled with two outs and
scored on an RBI double by senior outfielder Megan Ritchey, who advanced to
third on the throw home. Ritchey then scored on a Drew error on a ball hit by
freshman shortstop Stephanie Falzarano. After Falzarano stole second and moved
to third a throwing error, Moravian senior second baseman Beth Paly hit an RBI single to score Falzarano. Paly eventually
scored on an RBI single by junior first baseman Sheri Bieniek (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley).
The Greyhounds had seven hits in the game with Bieniek going two-for-three.

Men’s Tennis – 6-8-1
(Landmark Conference 4-3)
The fourth-seeded Greyhounds
dropped an 8-1 decision at top seeded Drew University in the 2008 Landmark
Conference Semifinals. Moravian's lone point came at first singles in a
straight sets victory by sophomore Ian
Box (Charlestown, MA/The Rivers School), who was
named the 2008 Landmark Conference Player of the Year earlier in the day. Box's win was his 13th straight at
first singles.
Women’s Tennis – 10-6 (Landmark
Conference 6-0)
The
top seeded Greyhounds defeated fourth seed Goucher College, 7-2, in the
Landmark Conference Semifinals to move in the Landmark Conference Championship
match on Saturday, April 26th versus The University of Scranton at Hoffman
Courts beginning at 1:00 p.m. The win was the fifth straight for Moravian,
which is in the postseason for the 14th consecutive year and has advanced to the
conference championship match for the 14th straight season. The Greyhounds
jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Gophers by sweeping the doubles action.
Moravian had wins from the tandems of senior Lindsey Hopper (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) and junior Dyana Swan (), seniors Brittany Popaca (Lavallette, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach)
and Jennel
Yelito (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) and junior MaryKate Kelly (Beach Haven, NJ/Southern Regional)
and freshman Kerry McKinley (Sparta,
NJ/Pope John XXIII) with Hopper
and Swan rallying from a 5-4 deficit
to win. Hopper was the first to
finish her singles match with a straight sets win at first singles while Yelito earned
the fifth and winning point with a straight sets victory at fourth singles. The
Greyhounds would also get straight sets wins from Popaca at third singles and McKinley at fifth singles.
Moravian dropped its final
non-conference match of the 2007-08 season, falling to
Wilkes University, 7-2, at Hoffman Courts. The Greyhounds dropped all three
doubles matches including a 9-8 (12-10) loss at third doubles by senior Rebecca Angstadt (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg)
and freshman Kerry McKinley. That
doubles match took nearly one and a half hours to play. Because of the long
third doubles match and the contest beginning late, all six singles matches
were just one proset. Angstadt and senior Brittany
Popaca won in singles at sixth and third singles
respectively.
The Greyhounds closed out the
2008 season by winning the inaugural Landmark Conference Championship with a
6-3 victory over The University of Scranton at Hoffman Courts. Moravian trailed
2-1 after doubles action with just a victory by the team of junior MaryKate Kelly and freshman Kerry McKinley at third doubles.
Moravian immediately tied the match with a straight sets
singles win by senior Lindsey Hopper
at first singles. The Greyhounds then won the next three singles matches to
finish to clinch the team's second straight and ninth
conference title in the last 14 years. Kelly
earned a straight sets win at second singles while senior Jennel Yelito won at fourth singles and senior Rebecca Angstadt won at sixth singles.
Senior Brittany Popaca would pick up a three-set
win at third singles to give the Greyhounds six points. The victory was Popaca's 62nd
singles win of her career, tying her for second in school history. McKinley would drop a three-set match
at fifth singles to close out the match.
