Softball – 30-6 (Landmark Conference 12-0)
Moravian junior pitcher Maria DeBonis (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) tossed a two-hit shutout with career high 14
strikeouts, and she drove in the winning run as the top seeded Greyhounds
defeated fourth seed Drew University, 2-0, in the first game of the 2008
Landmark Conference Tournament in Bethlehem.
Moravian
advanced to a winner’s bracket game at 3:00 p.m. against the winner of the
other first round game between second seed The University of Scranton and third
seed The Catholic University of America. The Rangers will play in the
first game on Saturday, May 3rd at 9:00 a.m. against the loser of the second
game.
DeBonis and Drew pitcher, junior Lauren Collini
engaged in a pitcher’s duel through five and a half innings before the
Greyhounds scored both of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Moravian
freshman shortstop Stephanie Falzarano (South
Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) led off
the inning with a ground ball back at Collini, whose
throw to first base was high allowing Falzarano to reach first safely. On the next pitch, Collini stopped her motion allowing Falzarano to move to second base
on an illegal pitch.
Greyhound
senior second baseman Beth Paly (Whitehall,
PA/Whitehall) followed with a sacrifice
bunt to third base, moving Falzarano to third base. DeBonis then hit an RBI single
up the middle to drive in Falzarano with the winning run. After an out, Moravian
junior outfielder Erica Klepeisz (Nazareth,
PA/Nazareth) hit an RBI triple to dead
centerfield, scoring DeBonis.
Moravian
had just five hits in the game with DeBonis going two-for-two. In the circle, DeBonis did not
allow a walk while facing just two batters over the minimum.
Moravian junior pitcher Maria DeBonis
tossed her second shutout of the day and added a three-run homer to lead the
top seeded Greyhounds to an 8-0, five-inning victory over second seed The
University of Scranton in a winner’s bracket game of the 2008 Landmark
Conference Tournament at Blue & Grey Field.
The
host Greyhounds, who have won seven straight games, move to 32-6 on the year
and into the championship game on Saturday, May 3rd at 1:00 p.m. while the
Royals, who are now 27-13, will play in the final elimination game at 11:00
a.m. Third seeded The Catholic University of America and fourth seed Drew
University will begin the day in the first elimination game at 9:00 a.m.
Saturday morning.
DeBonis, who had a two-hit shutout in Moravian’s first game
of the day, allowed just three hits, all singles, and walked one batter while
striking out ten Royals to improve to 18-3 on the season, her second straight
season with 18 victories.
Moravian
jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Senior
outfielder Megan Ritchey (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) led off with a single off of the pitcher’s glove and
moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Stephanie Falzarano. Senior second
baseman Beth Paly
singled to right field bringing up DeBonis. DeBonis connected on a three-run home run, her team leading
sixth homer of the season, to left field. After another out, junior
outfielder Erica Klepeisz
reached on a bunt single just a few feet in front of the plate. Klepeisz stole
second base and scored on an RBI triple to right centerfield by freshman third
baseman Maura Agnew (Doylestown, PA/Lansdale Catholic).
The
Greyhounds extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the second inning.
After an out to lead off the stanza, Ritchey
connected on a solo home run to dead centerfield, her third homer of the
season.
Moravian
added a run in the bottom of the third inning to build a 6-0 lead. Junior
first baseman Sheri Bieniek
(Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas
Valley) led off the inning with a solo home run to center
field, her second homer of the season.
The
Greyhounds scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to institute the NCAA
eight-run mercy rule and end the game. DeBonis led off with a single through the left side and
moved to third on a double by freshman first baseman Jennifer Schmitt (Mendham,
NJ/Mendham). Klepeisz would end the contest
with a two-RBI double to right centerfield scoring DeBonis and Schmitt.
Moravian
had 13 hits in the game with DeBonis, Ritchey
and Klepeisz
each going two-for-three and Agnew
going two-for-two. The Greyhounds’ three homers tied a single game high
for the season. Scranton had three hits with singles by senior Erin Moreau,
junior Molly Matyas and freshman Nikki Malloy.
Junior
pitcher Maria DeBonis
tossed her third shutout of the tournament to lead Moravian to the inaugural
Landmark Conference title with a 7-0 win over third seeded The Catholic
University of America in the 2008 Landmark Conference Tournament at Moravian’s
Blue & Grey Field Saturday afternoon.
The
top seeded Greyhounds, who have won eight consecutive games and 27 of their
last 28 contests, improve to 33-6 on the season and will now wait until Sunday
night to find out if the program has earned its 11th straight berth in the NCAA

Pool B independent bids.
Moravian
would jump out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Senior
outfielder Megan Ritchey singled to

to second base.

Greyhounds extended their lead to 4-0 with three runs in the second
inning. Junior first baseman Sheri
Bieniek
singled up the middle to lead off and moved to second on an error on a ball hit

Hills) followed with an RBI ground out to score Bieniek.
Freshman outfielder Amanda Paulus then hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Klepeisz. Agnew would score the final run of the
inning on a wild pitch.
