Greyhound Weekly Update, April 20, 2009 (-2222-)

Moravian opened the 2009 Greyhound Invitational by hosting the hammer throw at Rocco Calvo Field. Senior Blair Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) placed seventh in the 36-athlete field with a personal best and ECAC Division III qualifying toss of 49.55 meters (162 feet, six inches). Maginnis' throw was also the second longest in school history. Junior Matthew Wisotsky (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) took 22nd at 39.30 meters (128 feet, 11 inches).

The Greyhounds hosted the non-scoring Greyhound Invitational at Rocco Calvo Field and Timothy Breidegam Track. Moravian had four runner-up finishes with sophomore Eric Woodruff (Brodheadsville, PA/Pius X) taking second in the 200-meter dash in an NCAA Division III provisional and ECAC qualifying time of 21.49 seconds. Freshman Timothy Layng (Canton, PA/Canton) was second in the pole vault, clearing an ECAC qualifying height of 4.54 meters (14 feet, 11 inches) while junior Michael Blenk (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) was second in the long jump with an NCAA Division III provisional and ECAC qualifying mark of 7.02 meters (23 feet, 1/2 inch).

Woodruff also placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with an ECAC qualifying time of 11.02 seconds while senior Robert Shaffer (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) took sixth in 11.09 seconds, which also beet the ECAC qualifying standard. Shaffer also placed eighth in the 200-meter dash in an ECAC qualifying time of 22.44 seconds. Sophomore Warner Jones (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) was fourth in the 400-meter dash in an ECAC qualifying time of 49.22 seconds. Blenk finished tenth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.01 seconds while freshman Steve Ambrosi (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) was tenth in the 400-meter Hurdles in 57.40 seconds.

Senior Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) took fourth in the 800-meter run with an ECAC qualifying time of 1:54.88 while junior Steve Parisi (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) was ninth in 1:56.62. Freshman Zach Rivenbark (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) was seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:28.83. Junior Timothy Betz (Havertown, PA/Haverford) was tenth in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 17:15.10. The Greyhounds 4x400-meter relay squad of Murphy, Parisi, Jones and sophomore Connor Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) placed third in an ECAC qualifying time of 3:20.97.

Blenk also took ninth in the triple jump with a distance of 12.79 meters (41 feet, 11 1/2 inches), and he was tied for eighth in the high jump at a height of 1.75 meters (five feet, 8 3/4 inches). Senior Alan Woods (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff) was third in the pole vault, clearing 4.24 meters (13 feet, 11 inches).

Senior Blair Maginnis placed sixth in the shot put with an ECAC qualifying toss of 14.98 meters (49 feet, 1 3/4 inches). Freshman Gary Zack (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) finished eighth in the javelin throw with an ECAC qualifying toss of 55.03 meters (180 feet, six inches).

Moravian opened the 2009 Greyhound Invitational by hosting the hammer throw at Rocco Calvo Field. Junior Flora Robertson (Hawley, PA/East Stroudsburg North) placed sixth in the 31-athlete field with a season best and ECAC Division III qualifying throw of 45.77 meters (150 feet, two inches). Freshman Anne Joseph (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) was 19th with a toss of 35.23 meters (115 feet, seven inches).

The Greyhounds hosted the non-scoring Greyhound Invitational at Rocco Calvo Field and Timothy Breidegam Track. Moravian had one first place finish with junior Anna Heim (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) winning the pole vault with an NCAA Division III automatic, an ECAC qualifying and meet record height of 3.86 meters (12 feet, eight inches).

Junior Symonne Scott (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) took third in the 100-meter dash with an ECAC qualifying time of 12.66 seconds. Sophomore Sydni Wisniewski (Orlando, FL/Winter Park) placed fifth in the 200-meter dash in an ECAC qualifying time of 25.86 seconds, and she was seventh in the 400-meter dash with an ECAC qualifying time of 58.41 seconds. Junior Jessica Posimo placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in an ECAC qualifying time of 15.40 seconds. The Greyhounds 4x100-meter relay squad of Scott, Wisniewski, Posimo and junior Rachel Riggs (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) finished fifth in an NCAA Division III provisional and ECAC qualifying time of 48.54 seconds.

Freshman Hailey Neff (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) placed fifth in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:20.42 while freshman Kristina Ruggiero (Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) was tenth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:01.73. Senior Naomie Kachel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) was seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 13:01.06. Moravian's 4x400-meter relay squad finished fifth in an ECAC qualifying time of 4:03.50.

Scott was fourth in the long jump with an NCAA Division III provisional and ECAC qualifying distance of 5.50 meters (18 feet, 1/2 inch) while Posimo took fifth with an NCAA Division III and ECAC qualifying mark of 5.49 meters (18 feet, 1/4 inch). Riggs placed sixth in the long jump with an ECAC qualifying leap of 5.29 meters (17 feet, 4 1/4 inches). Riggs also took sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 10.96 meters (35 feet, 11 1/2 inches) while Posimo was eighth at 10.67 meters (35 feet, 1/4 inch).

Senior Christine Kihm (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) was the runner-up in the pole vault with an NCAA Division III and ECAC qualifying height of 3.50 meters (11 feet, six inches). Freshman Anne Joseph placed sixth in the discus with a toss of 35.00 meters (114 feet, ten inches) while freshman Brittany Moses (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) was tenth at 33.92 meters 911 feet, three inches).

 

 


Greyhound Weekly Update, April 20, 2009 (-4444-)

Men’s Lacrosse -- 4-10 (Landmark Conference 1-4)

The University of Scranton men’s lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and defeated visiting Moravian, 11-4, in Landmark Conference action.

The Royals’ Nick Youngstrom scored three of his match high four goals in the first quarter including a man-up goal just 27 seconds into the match as Scranton led 5-0 after 15 minutes of action.  Both teams scored twice in the second quarter to give the Royals a 7-2 lead, and both squads tallied a goal in the third quarter as Scranton led 8-3 after 45 minutes of action.  The Royals finished the match with a 52-29 advantage in shots, a 50-39 edge in ground balls and won 14 of 19 face-offs.

Sophomore attack David Bennett (Easton, PA/Easton) led the Greyhounds with two goals while sophomore attack Christopher Mohapp (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) added a goal and an assist.  Senior attack Jason Tosches (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) had a goal for Moravian while sophomore midfielder Robert Devine (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes) had an assist. 

Sophomore defender Michael Santos (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) and freshman defender Merrick Smith (Stonington, CT/The Williams School) each had a team high five ground balls for Moravian while senior defender Steven Carroll (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) had a team high five caused turnovers.  Freshman defender Kevin Jordan had four ground balls and four caused turnovers for the Greyhounds.  Senior goalie Benjamin Larson (Dover, DE/Dover) made 19 saves to go with three ground balls for Moravian.

The Kean University men’s lacrosse team scored three straight goals in the fourth quarter to turn an 8-7 deficit into an 10-8 lead, and then held on for a 10-9 non-conference win over visiting Moravian.

The Greyhounds scored first on a goal from senior attack Jason Tosches at the 12:59 mark of the first quarter but 51 seconds later Moravian trailed 2-1.  The Greyhounds did hold a 4-3 lead after the first 15 minutes thanks to a pair of goals in the final 1:33 of the first quarter.  The Cougars scored two of the three goals in the second quarter to tie the match at 5-5 at halftime. 

Kean scored twice to start the third quarter but a Greyhound goal had the score at 7-6 Lean after 45 minutes.  The Cougars had a 29-28 edge in shots, a 36-17 advantage in ground balls and won 14 of 23 face-offs.

Tosches led Moravian with four goals to tie the Greyhound career record with 91 goals.  Sophomore midfielder David Forte (Chester, NJ/West Morris Mendham) added three goals while senior attack Christopher Danni (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) and sophomore attack David Bennett each scored goals.  Sophomore attack Christopher Mohapp had a pair of assists for the Greyhounds while sophomore midfielder Robert Devine had one assist.

Freshman defender Merrick Smith and freshman midfielder Zachary Stein (Schnecksville, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) each had a team high three ground balls while Stein won nine of 22 face-offs.  Greyhound senior goalie Benjamin Larson added nine saves.

Women’s Lacrosse -- 5-9 (Landmark Conference 0-4)

The Alvernia College women’s lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held off a second half rally from visiting Moravian to earn an 18-16 non-conference win.

The Crusaders scored the first five goals and led 6-1 before the Greyhounds netted three straight goals to pull within 6-4 with 16:50 to play in the first half.  Alvernia went into the intermission with a 10-6 lead and scored the first three goals of the second half for a 13-6 lead.  With the Crusaders holding a 15-7 lead with just over 25 minutes remaining, Moravian scored nine of the final 12 goals including pulling within two goals at 17-15 with 5:37 still on the clock.  Alvernia finished the match with a 36-30 edge in shots and a 22-14 advantage on draw controls while both teams had 12 ground balls.

Sophomore midfielder Sarah Carman (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) led Moravian in scoring with five goals and an assist while junior attack Jillian Pagliei (Ivyland, PA/Council Rock North) added four goals and an assist.  Junior midfielder Paige Warbrick (Souderton, PA/Souderton Area) had two goals and two assists to tie the school record with 20 career assists while junior midfielder Katie Wise (Ardsley, PA/Abington) netted two goals for the Greyhounds.  Sophomore midfielder Maureen Helfers (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke), senior attack Georgia Castellano (Cherry Hills, NJ/Cherry Hill West) and sophomore attack Shannon Algeo (Spring-Ford, PA/Spring-Ford) each had one goal for Moravian. 

Castellano led the Greyhounds with five draw controls while Wise had a team high three ground balls.  Carman added three draw controls and two ground balls.  Moravian junior goalie Courtney Rosenberg (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May Regional) had 11 saves in the match.

Senior midfielder Jenny Lucey scored a match high five goals to lead the Goucher College women’s lacrosse team to an 18-7 Landmark Conference victory over host Moravian on the HUB Quad.

Moravian led 1-0 just 37 seconds into the match on a goal by senior attack Georgia Castellano only to see the Gophers score 11 of the next 12 goals to lead 11-4 at halftime.  Goucher finished the match with a 36-24 advantage in shots and a 22-18 edge in ground balls while the Greyhounds held a 15-10 advantage in draw controls.

Junior midfielder Katie Wise and junior attack Jillian Pagliei each had two goals for Moravian while Castellano had a goal and an assist.  Sophomore midfielders Sarah Carman and Maureen Helfers each had goals. 

Carman also led the Greyhounds with six draw controls and three ground balls, which gave her a school record 58 for the season, while Helfers had four draw controls and three ground balls.  Moravian junior goalie Courtney Rosenberg made 11 saves in the contest.

The Misericordia University baseball team used a five-run third inning to take a 6-3 lead on the way to posting an 8-5 win over visiting Moravian in non-conference action.

The Greyhounds, who dropped their sixth straight non-conference game, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Sophomore shortstop Jason Huber (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to third on a single from senior outfielder Joseph Durso (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brother Academy).  Freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) followed with a two-RBI single to score Huber and Durso.

Moravian pushed its lead to 3-0 with a run in the top of the second inning.  Senior designated hitter Thomas Czarnecki (Columbia, NJ/North Warren) led off with a single and eventually scored on an RBI ground out from senior outfielder Eric Shea (Madison, NJ/Morristown Beard).

The Cougars would get one run back in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI ground out by designated hitter Andres Gonzalez to cut the Moravian lead to 3-1.

Misericordia scored five times in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead for good at 6-3.  First baseman Brandon Calafut drove in a pair of runs with an RBI single, and second baseman Jamie Philippi also added a two-RBI single.  Gonzalez drove in the final run of the winning with an RBI single.

The Cougars would add two more runs on the bottom of the fourth inning for an 8-3 edge with shortstop Nate Newman hitting a one-out, two-run homer.

Moravian finished off the scoring with two runs in the top of the eighth inning.  Huber walked with one out, and two batters later O’Keefe connected on a two-run home run, his team leading fifth homer of the season.

Misericordia had a 12-6 edge in hits in the game with catcher Chris Tuttle going three-for-four.  Newman, Philippi and outfielder Jeff Slanovec each had two hits for the Cougars.  O’Keefe had half of Moravian’s hits, going three-for-four I the contest.

The Greyhounds used three pitchers with junior Philip Spence (Lafayette, NJ/Newton) taking the loss to drop to 3-2 on the year.  Spence allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk with one strikeout in three innings of action.  Junior Brandon Palmisano (Mountainhome, PA/Pius X) tossed three innings, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks with one strikeout.  Junior Joe Melchionna (Marlboro, NJ/St. John Vianney) tossed the final two innings, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

The Greyhounds had their six-game Landmark Conference winning streak snapped in the first game of a conference doubleheader at The Catholic University of America, falling 12-4.

The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning in the first game.  Sophomore second baseman Jake Schweitzer reached on a Cardinal error to start the inning, and he moved to third base on a single from freshman catcher Blake Shortall (Kintnersville, PA/Freedom)Schweitzer scored when freshman shortstop Dave Zubia (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) grounded into a double play.

Catholic tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single from second baseman Timothy Mierzwa.

Moravian answered with a run in the top of the third inning to retake the lead, 2-1.  Senior outfielder Joseph Durso drew a walk to lead off the inning, and he moved to third on a single from freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe.  Freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci (Easton, PA/Notre Dame) then hit an RBI ground out to score Durso.

The Cardinals would take their first lead of the game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Mierzwa had an RBI single as did outfielder Dimitri Deoudes.  Outfielder Tommy Little added a two-run single.

Catholic pushed its lead to 7-2 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-RBI double from outfielder Cory Hudson.

Moravian would get two runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull within 7-4.  Schweitzer and Shortall hit back-to-back singles to start the inning, and Zubia drove Schweitzer home with an RBI single.  Shortall ended up being out in a run down between third base and home before Durso hit an RBI single to score Zubia.

The Cardinals finished off the scoring with five runs on the bottom of the sixth inning.  First baseman Mike Goodman had an RBI single as did catcher Patrick Quintana.  Shortstop LJ Travaglia and third baseman Troy Langway each had RBI singles while Mierzwa had his third RBI single of the game to finish off the scoring.
 

Catholic had a 17-10 edge in hits in the game with Mierzwa and Hudseon each going three-for-four.  Travaglia was three-for-three for the Cardinals while Little, Langway and Quintana each had two hits. Durso, Shortall and senior outfielder Eric Shea were each two-for-three for the Greyhounds.  Shea’s two hits moved him within one of 100 for his career.

Moravian freshman starting pitcher Brendan Close (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) lasted just 4 1/3 innings while suffering his second loss of the season.  Close allowed seven runs, five of them earned, on ten hits and two walks, and he did strike out three batters to tie the Greyhound single season record of 65 strikeouts.  Close tied the mark set by Jon Yard set in 1996.

Junior Brandon Palmisano tossed 1 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on six hits with one strikeout.  Junior Joe Melchionna pitched to one batter with a strikeout.

The Catholic University of America baseball team completed a sweep of visiting Moravian with an 11-7 win in the second game of the twinbill. The loss kept the Greyhounds from clinching their first postseason appearance since 2004, and also knocked Moravian out of first place in the conference standings.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Designated hitter Joseph Devine had an RBI single while first baseman Mike Goodman and catcher Patrick Quintana each hit RBI sacrifice flies.

Moravian would get two runs back in the top of the second inning to cut the lead to 3-2.  Junior designated hitter Brad Bodine led off with a single before sophomore second baseman Schweitzer walked.  Senior third baseman Kevin Gambrino followed with an infield single to load the bases.  Freshman shortstop Dave Zubia would drive in Bodine with an RBI ground out while senior outfielder Eric Shea hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Schweizter.

Catholic would extend its lead to 8-2 with five runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Outfielder Dimitri Deoudes led off with a solo home run while Goodman had an RBI single.  Shortstop LJ Travaglia added an RBI sacrifice fly while outfielder Cory Hudson hit a two-RBI single.

The Cardinals added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for an 11-2 lead on a two-run homer from Goodman and a solo homer from Quintana in the next at-bat.

Moravian would score five runs in the top of the fifth inning to finish the scoring in the game.  Shea led off the inning with triple for the 100th hit of his career, the 14th player in school history to reach 100 career hits.  Senior outfielder Joseph Dusro would hit an RBI single to score Shea, and after freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe was hit by a pitch, freshman catcher Austin Rock hit a three-run homer, his fourth home run of the season.  Bodine would go deep in the following at-bat for his third home run of the season.

Both teams had nine hits in the second game with Devine going three-for-four for Catholic.  Goodman was also two-for-two with four RBIs for the Cardinals.  Durso and Bodine were each two-for-four for the Greyhounds.

Moravian used three pitchers with junior Ryan Cummings (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) falling to 3-2 on the year after allowing seven runs, six earned, on five hits and a walk with one strikeout in two-plus innings of work.  Junior Joe Melchionna tossed two innings, giving up four runs on four hits and a walk with one strikeout while junior Andrew DeLio (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) tossed the final two innings with two strikeouts.

The Catholic University of America baseball team capped a three-run, ninth inning rally with the winning run scoring on a wild pitch, the second run of the inning to score on a wild pitch, to come from behind after blowing a five-run lead, defeating visiting Moravian , 9-8, in the final game of the Landmark Conference series between the schools.

Despite the loss and losses each contest in the three-game series, the Greyhounds clinched a berth in the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament that will be hosted by Susquehanna University May 1st to 3rd with the other results around the conference Sunday afternoon.  The postseason berth for Moravian will be its first under third-year head coach Paul Engelhardt, and the first for the program since 2004.

Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, and sophomore outfielder Jason Huber followed with a single. After an out, freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe connected on an RBI single to score Shea.

The Cardinals answered with six runs, five of them unearned; in the bottom of the first inning to take a 6-1 lead.  Catcher Patrick Quintana had a two-RBI single, and third baseman Troy Langway connected on a grand slam home run.

Moravian pulled within two runs, 6-4, in the top of the third inning after pushing three runs home.  With two outs, junior designated hitter Brad Bodine and senior third baseman Kevin Gambrino each singled.  A wild pitch would move the runners up a base, and sophomore second baseman Jake Schweitzer drew a walk to load the bases.  Freshman catcher Austin Rock came on to pinch hit and was hit by a pitch to score Bodine.  Freshman shortstop Dave Zubia followed with a two-RBI single scoring Gambrino and Schweitzer.

The Greyhounds would tie the contest at 6-6 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Huber singled with an out and moved to third on a single from DursoO’Keefe then hit an RBI ground out to score Huber while Durso would cross the plate on an RBI single from Gambrino.

Moravian scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to take an 8-6 lead.  Rock was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Zubia followed with a single.  After a fielder’s choice by Shea that had Rock out at third, and the second out of the inning, Durso was walked intentionally to load the bases.  O’Keefe ripped a two-RBI single to send Zubia and Shea home and put the Greyhounds ahead for the first time in the game.

Catholic would score three times in the bottom of the ninth inning for the victory with two outs.  With one out to start the inning, second baseman Timothy Mierwza and outfielder Dimitri Deoudes singled.  Outfielder Tommy Little drew a walk to load the bases.  After a Moravian pitching change, Mierzwa scampered home on a wild pitch.  Designated hitter Joseph Devine delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to score Deoudes, and Little moved to third on the play.  After another Greyhound pitching change, Little scored the winning run on another wild pitch.

The Greyhounds had a 14-11 edge in hits in the game with Zubia going four-for-five.  Huber was three-for-six for Moravian while O’Keefe and Bodine were each two-for-five.  O’Keefe had four RBIs to tie Durso for the single season Greyhound record of 46 RBIs in a season while Huber scored one run to extend his single season school record to 45 runs scored.  Mierzwa was three-for-four to lead Catholic while Devine was two-for-two.

Moravian used four pitchers in the game with freshman Thomas Fenyak starting and going 7 2/3 innings.  He allowed six runs, only one earned on nine hits and six walks with three strikeouts.  Junior Philip Spence dropped to 3-3 on the year after giving up three runs on two hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning.  Junior Zach Andes faced one batter, recording an out while junior Andrew DeLio was on the mound when the game ended.

Softball -- 27-9 (Landmark Conference 9-1)

Last Week – Split games with Catholic University*, Lost 6-3 and Won 12-0; Split games with Ramapo College, Lost 4-3 and Won 5-2; Defeated Susquehanna University*, 2-1 and 4-1. *Landmark Conference Game.

The Greyhounds had their 13-game winning streak snapped with a 6-3 loss at The Catholic University of America in the first game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader. The loss was Moravian’s first to a Landmark Conference opponent since the conference began play in 2008.  The Greyhounds had won their first 21 games against Landmark teams including the postseason. 

The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a two-RBI single by second baseman Kelly Lukacs.

Moravian responded and tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning.  Senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) led off the inning with a solo homer, her team leading fifth home run of the season.  With one out, sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus (Easton, PA/Easton) doubled and scored on an RBI single from senior catcher Deanna Mangieri (Pleasantville, NY/Byram Hills).

The Greyhounds would take a 3-2 lead with a run in the top of the fifth inning.  Freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko (Nazarteth, PA/Nazareth) reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on an RBI double from senior pitcher Maria DeBonis (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame).

Catholic retook the lead with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to earn the victory with all four runs scoring on a grand slam homer from shortstop Megan Rizzi.

Both teams had six hits in the game.  Bieniek was two-for-three for the Greyhounds while Lukacs was two-for-four for the Cardinals.

DeBonis dropped to 11-6 in the circle for Moravian, allowing six runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four batters in 5 1/3 innings of action.  Sophomore Elizabeth Python (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) tossed the final 2/3 of an inning for the Greyhounds.  Stephanie Clemente went the distance for the Cardinals, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk with one strikeout.

Moravian bounced back in the second game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader at The Catholic University of America to earn a 12-0, five-inning victory to earn a split of the twinbill and remain in first place by a game in the conference standings. The win also moved Moravian 16-year head coach John Byrne one victory shy of 500 for his career with an overall mark of 499-155.

Moravian would jump out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the second inning, giving freshman pitcher Jenna Carmon (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) all the offense she needed.  Carmon drew a one out walk and scored on a two-run homer from sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus, her second homer of the season.  Senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz and sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew (Doylestown, PA/Lansdale Catholic) drew walks and scored on a two-RBI single by sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano. Freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko and senior designated player Maria DeBonis would draw walks to load the bases before Falzarano scored on a wild pitch.  Carmon finished off the inning with an RBI single to score Evanko.

The Greyhounds added two runs in the top of the fourth inning for an 8-0 lead.  Falzarano was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and she scored on a two-out RBI double by senior first baseman Sheri BieniekBieniek eventually crossed the plate on an infield RBI single by Paulus.

Moravian finished off the scoring with four more runs in the top of the fifth inning.  Klepeisz started things off with a single before Agnew walked.  Falzarano reached on a fielder’s choice that had everyone safe before Evanko picked up an RBI with a bases loaded walk.  DeBonis then hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score AgnewEvanko would steal second base with Falzarano sliding home on the throw to second.  Sophomore outfielder Megan Boyle (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) finished off the scoring with an RBI single to score Evanko.

Moravian had an 8-2 edge in hits in the second game as the Greyhounds drew ten walks in the contest.  Carmon was two-for-two while Paulus went two-for three.

In the circle, Carmon improved to 8-1 on the year with her third shutout of the season, allowing just two hits while striking out two batters.  Catholic used three pitchers in the contest with Stacie Goddard taking the loss after allowing ten runs on three hits and eight walks in 2 1/3 innings of action.

The Greyhounds dropped the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at 21st ranked Ramapo College of New Jersey, 4-3 in nine innings on a two run walk-off homer by the Roadrunners' Kelly Schriber. The loss dropped Moravian to 1-4 in extra-inning games this season.

Ramapo took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a solo home run by designated player Marilee Farmer.

The Greyhounds would answer in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1.  Sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus doubled with one out and moved to third on a ground out by senior catcher Deanna MangieriPaulus would come home on a passed ball.

The game would remain tied at 1-1 through the regulation seven innings.  In the top of the eighth, the teams began using the international tiebreaker rule by placing a runner on second base to start the inning.  Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano began the inning on second and moved to third on a ground out by freshman outfielder Olivia EvankoFalzarano eventually scored on a Ramapo error on a ball bit by Greyhound senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek.

The Roadrunners had a pinch runner Jaclyn Giangrande on second to start the bottom of the eighth inning.  After two outs, Giangrande would score on an RBI infield single by outfielder Rachel Wong.

Freshman designated player Jenna Carmon started the top of the ninth inning at second base for Moravian.  Carmon crossed the plate on another Roadrunner error on a ball hit by Mangieri to put the Greyhounds up 3-2.

Farmer started the bottom of the ninth on second for Ramapo.  After a sacrifice bunt by Brittney McKeon, Schriber connected on a two-run, walk-off home run to end the game.

Ramapo had a 7-5 edge in hits in the first game with shortstop Tiffany Fischer going two-for-three.  Paulus was two-for-four to lead the Greyhounds.

Senior pitcher Maria DeBonis dropped her second straight game in the circle for Moravian to fall to 11-7 on the year.  DeBonis allowed four runs, just two earned, on seven hits and a walk.  DeBonis did have six strikeouts in the contest to push her career total to 502, the second pitcher in school history to record 500 career strikeouts, and DeBonis also had a hit at the plate to move her within two hits of 100 for her career.


Moravian salvaged a split in a non-conference doubleheader at 21st-ranked Ramapo College of New Jersey with a 5-2 win in the second game to earn 16-year head coach John Byrne his 500th career win.

Byrne, pictured at right, becomes the 24th overall and 19th active NCAA Division III coach to reach 500 career wins, and the second in as many days as SUNY Buffalo State head coach Sandra Hollander won her 500th game on Wednesday.  Byrne had a career record of 500-156 in his 16-year career at Moravian, and he becomes the first Greyhound coach to reach 500 career wins in a single sport.  Byrne entered the season fifth all-time among NCAA Division III coaches with a .762 winning percentage.

Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.  Senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek reached on an error to lead off the inning before freshman pitcher Jenna Carmon was hit by a pitch.  After a sacrifice bunt from sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus put both runners in scoring position, senior catcher Deanna Mangieri hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Bieniek.

The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 2-0 with another run in the top of the third inning.  Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano doubled with one out and moved to third on a single off of freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko’s bat.  Senior designated player Maria DeBonis followed with an RBI sacrifice fly sending Falzarano home.

Moravian scored three times in the top of the fourth inning for a 5-0 lead, which is all Carmon would need in the circle.  With two outs, Paulus started the rally with a double.  Mangieri would reach on an error and steal second base.  Senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz followed with an RBI single to score Paulus while sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew had an RBI single to send Mangieri home.  Falzarano would drive in the final run of the inning with an RBI single to score Klepeisz.

Ramapo’s two runs in the game would come in the bottom of the seventh inning when Kelly Schriber connected on another two-run homer, her second of the twinbill after a walk-off home run on the ninth inning of the first game.

The Greyhounds had a 9-5 edge in hits in the second game with Paulus going two-for-two.  Evanko was two-for-three for Moravian while Falzarano was two-for four.  Designated player Danielle Rothenberger was two-for-three for Ramapo.

Carmon improved to 9-1 in the circle for the Greyhounds with her seventh straight victory.  Carmon allowed two runs, only one was earned, on five hits and no walks.  She did strikeout three batters.

Senior pitcher/designated player shined on Senior Day as the Greyhounds clinched a berth in the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Susquehanna University in the first game of a conference doubleheader at Blue & Grey Field.

In the circle, DeBonis improved to 12-7 on the season, allowing a run on six hits and a walk with ten strikeouts.  At the plate, DeBonis had a pair of hits including a two-run homer in the fifth inning for her 100th career high.

DeBonis home run in the fifth broke a scoreless tie and came with one out and after freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko reached second on a pair of errors.

The Crusaders would pull within a run in the top of the sixth inning when senior first baseman Laurie Blaszka doubled with one out and scored on an RBI single from junior catcher Kelli Holata.

Susquehanna had a 6-4 edge in hits with freshman outfielder Lisa Finizio going two-for-four and senior outfielder Gretchen Halsey going two-for-three.  DeBonis was two-for-three for Moravian.

The Greyhounds earned a sweep of Susquehanna University in Landmark Conference action at Blue & Grey Field, defeating the Crusaders, 4-1, in the second contest. Moravian's win coupled with a loss by The Catholic University of America clinched home field for the defending Landmark Conference Champion Greyhounds at the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament May 1st and 2nd.

Moravian would jump out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.  Freshman pitcher Jenna Carmon led off with a single.  After a sacrifice bunt by sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus and another out, senior outfielder Eric Klepeisz hit an RBI double to score Carmon.

Susquehanna tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Bryn Whitmire.

The Greyhounds answered with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning for the victory.  Senior designated player Maria DeBonis drew her third of four walks in the game to lead off the inning, and she moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior first baseman Sheri BieniekCarmon would walk, and Paulus would hit a single to load the bases.  Senior catcher Deanna Mangieri followed with a three-RBI double off the top of the fence in center field to empty the bases, but Mangieri was thrown out trying to get to third on the throw home.  Moravian finished the game with a 5-4 edge in hits.

Carmon won her eighth straight game in the circle to improve to 10-1 on the season.  She allowed a run on four hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Sophomore Cara Swerdlow tossed the second game for the Crusaders, giving up four runs on five hits and seven walks with two strikeouts.

Women’s Tennis -- 10-5 (Landmark Conference 5-0)

            Moravian, the defending Landmark Conference Champion, clinched at least the second seed and a home semifinal match in the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament with a 9-0 sweep of The University of Scranton in conference action at Hoffman Courts. The Greyhounds, who remain undefeated in conference action at 4-0, started out by winning all three doubles matches with wins by the tandems of freshman Jami Fein (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) and senior Dyana Swan (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) at first doubles, freshmen Melissa Emery (Phillipsburg, NJ/Notre Dame (PA)) and Anna Meola (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) at second doubles and senior MaryKate Kelly (Beach Haven, NJ/Southern Regional) and sophomore Kerry McKinley (Sparta, NJ/Pope John XXIII) at third doubles. Moravian won all six singles matches including straight sets wins from Fein at first singles, Kelly at third singles, McKinley at fourth singles, freshman Alexandra Hay at fifth singles and Meola at sixth singles.  Swan rallied for a three-set win at second singles after dropping the second set. The Greyhounds will host one of the two Landmark Conference Semifinals on Wednesday, April 29th at Hoffman Courts.  Moravian’s opponent for the match as well as the starting time are still to be determined.

The Greyhounds remained undefeated in Landmark Conference action and in a tie for first place with an 8-1 victory at Drew University. Moravian led 2-1 after doubles action with victories from the teams of freshman Jami Fein and senior Dyana Swan at first doubles and senior MaryKate Kelly and sophomore Kerry McKinley at third doubles. The Greyhounds would sweep the singles action with Fein winning in straight sets at first singles and Swan victorious in straight sets at second singles. Kelly needed three sets including a tiebreaker in the first set for a win at third singles while McKinley won in straight sets at fourth singles. Freshmen Alexandra Hay and Anna Meola earned straight sets wins at fifth and sixth singles for the Greyhounds.

 



Men’s Tennis -- 10-5 (Landmark Conference 4-1)

            Moravian suffered its first Landmark Conference loss of the season, falling to Drew University, 5-4, in a conference match on the road. Despite the loss, the Greyhounds still clinched a berth in the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament with other results from around the conference.
            The Rangers swept the doubles action to jump out to a 3-0 lead. The Greyhound due of junior Ian Box (Charlestown, MA/The Rivers School) and sophomore Doug Morrow (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) dropped an 8-6 decision at first doubles, the closest of the three matches.
            In singles action, Moravian won four of six matches with freshmen Kevin Holze (Bayside, NY/St. Francis Prep) and Drew Shreter (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) each breaking the previous school record for wins in a season as both players recorded their 18th wins of the year. Holze won in straight sets at third singles while Shreter posted a three-set win at fourth singles. Morrow captured a straight sets win at second singles while junior Chandler Forman (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth) won in three sets at fifth singles including a tiebreaker in the third set.

Golf -- 2-0 (Landmark Conference 0-0)

Last Week – Tied for 2nd out of 15 at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational at Bent Creek Country Club; Tied for 5th out of 12 at the Glenmaura National Collegiate Tournament hosted by The University of Scranton.

This Week – Wed., April 22nd at the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Tournament at Lehigh Country Club, 1:00 p.m.; Thur., April 30th at the DeSales University with Ursinus College at Brookside Country Club, 1:00 p.m.

 

The Greyhounds finished in a tie for second, two strokes off of the lead at the Bent Creek Invitational hosted by Franklin & Marshall College at the Bent Creek Country Club. Moravian and Wesley College each had scores of 308 while the host Diplomats fired a team score of 306. Sophomore Seth Hartman (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) paced the Greyhound individuals with a three-over par round of 74 on the par 71 course that tied him for sixth of 87 golfers. Sophomores Robert McKay (Bethlehem, PA/Northampton) and Lucas Smith (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) each tied for 14th with rounds of 77 while freshman John Dimler (Allentown, PA/Parkland) was tied for 35th with an 80. Junior Alan Kliewer (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) fired an 83, which tied him for 49th place.
