Women’s Volleyball – 14-19(Landmark
Conference 3-3)
Fourth seeded Moravian overcame a
one-hour delay to the start of the match and a slow start once action began to
post a 24-26, 25-14, 25-17, 25-16 victory over fifth seeded The Catholic
University of America in the first round of the 2008 Landmark Conference
Tournament in Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds advance to take on top seed and
number one ranked Juniata College in a semifinal match in Huntingdon,
Pennsylvania on Saturday, November 8th at 11:00 a.m. The start of
Wednesday night’s match was delayed an hour after Catholic was late arriving in
Bethlehem.
However,
the Cardinals were the hot team once action started led almost the entire first
set including a lead of 21-16. Moravian had the set tied three times
before taking a brief 23-22 lead. Catholic responded with four of the
next five points for the win. The Cardinals held brief leads in the other
three sets before the Greyhounds took control of each one midway through the
set.
Senior

Women’s Soccer – 14-5-2 (Landmark
Conference 4-1-1)
Senior
goalie Caitlin Corrigan (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) made six saves to earn her 50th career victory and
lead top seeded Moravian to a 2-0 victory over fourth seed Juniata College in a
Landmark Conference Semifinal match on the HUB Quad. The Greyhounds will now
host second seed The Catholic University of America in the championship match
on Saturday, November 8th at 1:00 p.m. in Bethlehem. The Cardinals
defeated third seeded The University of Scranton, 1-0 in overtime, in the other
semifinal contest. The victory also extended Moravian’s unbeaten streak to
eight matches as the Greyhounds are 6-0-2 in their last eight contests. Corrigan had three of her saves in the
first half with her first save of the contest making her the fourth player in
school history to reach 300 career saves. Corrigan added three more saves in the second half, and Moravian
would have a pair of defenders clear away shots in the second half after Corrigan lost control of crossing pass
on the left side of the goal. In addition to her 50th win, Corrigan posted her 33rd career shutout,
both school records. Moravian gave Corrigan
all of the offense she needed in the 16th minute. Senior forward Tracy Fitzpatrick (Wantage, NJ/High Point Regional) pushed a long lead pass down the right side of the
field to junior forward Alessandra Valdetara (Butler,
NJ/Butler). Valdetara took one touch to
settle the ball then blasted her sixth goal of the season from eight-yards out.
The Greyhounds scored again in the 63rd minute just after a Juniata goal
kick. Moravian freshman midfielder Kim
Gogel took the goal kick about ten yards in front
of the midfield line and headed the ball back into Moravian’s offensive
end. Fitzpatrick one-touched
the ball across the top of the 18-yard box to freshman forward Arielle Caldas (Cherry Hills, NJ/Cherry Hill West). Caldas
took a second to get the ball in the right position before drilling a shot
across the box and into the front left corner of the goal for her tenth goal of
the year. The two assists for Fitzpatrick
give her 21 for her career, moving her into a tie for second in school history,
and she now has 87 career points, third all-time. Moravian had a 15-12
advantage in shots in the match, and the Greyhounds held a 10-4 edge in corner
kicks. Junior sophomore keeper Lauren Auster-Gussman
made five saves in the contest. The victory was the 49th for Corrigan, and it was also her 32nd
career shutout, both school records.
Freshman forward Arielle Caldas
netted the golden goal in the 108th minute to lift top seeded Moravian to a
1-0, double-overtime victory over second seed The Catholic University of
America in the 2008 Landmark Conference Championship match on the HUB Quad. The
conference title is the first-ever for the Greyhounds, and it was also the
first time in three trips to the conference championship match that Moravian
had played at home. The Greyhounds extended their unbeaten streak to
7-0-2, and Moravian is now 2-1-2 in double overtime this fall. Moravian
will find out Sunday night if it has received one of the three Pool B berths to
the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament for the second straight
year. The Greyhounds, 14-5-2 overall after the win, are part of Pool B
since the Landmark Conference will not receive an automatic berth until 2009. Caldas collected the ball on the
offensive side of midfield and dribbled down the left side of the pitch.
As she reached the 18-yard box, Caldas
cut back towards the middle of the field as the Catholic defender slipped on
the wet surface. Caldas then
ripped a 12-yard shot under Catholic junior goalie Tere
Rossi and into the back right corner of the net for her 11th goal of the season
and her fifth game-winning goal. Catholic had a 25-15 advantage in shots with
the Cardinals up 21-11 in shots after regulation. Catholic also had an
11-2 edge in corner kicks. Moravian senior goalie Caitlin Corrigan made seven saves for her eighth shutout of the
season. Corrigan also picked
up her 51st career win and 34th career shutout which are both Moravian records,
and she moved into third in career saves, now with 312. Rossi had four
stops for Catholic. Both teams had scoring chances throughout the match.
Catholic had two scoring chances with Corrigan
making a good save on a shot by sophomore forward Kelly Donnely
in the 33rd minute. Rossi stopped Moravian senior forward Tracy Fitzpatrick in the 41st minute on
a breakaway. Late in the second half, both teams would have opportunities
again. The Cardinals got off six shots in the final six minutes with Corrigan making one save and shot by
Catholic freshman midfielder Caitlin Brett hitting the left post. Fitzpatrick broke in again one-on-one
on Rossi with just under a minute to play in regulation before chipping a shot
wide to the right. Fitzpatrick had
another shot early in the first overtime. However, the best scoring
chance of the first extra session went to Catholic. Donnely
attempted to head a shot in from the right side but Corrigan fully extended to
just tap the shot over the cross bar and onto the top of the net for a corner
kick. In the second overtime, Catholic had two shots blocked before they
reached the net then Rossi made a save on a Fitzpatrick header in the 104th minute. In the 106th minute,
Moravian junior forward Alessandra Valdetara came down the right side of the box and
ripped a shot that bounced off of the cross bar to allow Catholic to attack the
other way. With the ball bouncing around, Caldas
would gain possession and head on her game-winning break.
