Men’s Basketball -- 1-3 (Landmark Conference 0-0)

Last Week – Lost to DeSales University, 83-78.

This Week – Mon., Dec. 1st at Arcadia University, 7:00 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 6th vs. Scranton University*, 7:30 p.m. *Landmark Conference Game.

The DeSales University men’s basketball team played four players in double figures led by 19 points from junior guard Darnell Braswell and held on despite letting a 20-point second half lead fall back to three points in an 83-78 non-conference win over local rival Moravian in Johnston Hall. The Bulldogs improve to 3-0 on the season with the victory while the Greyhounds suffered their third consecutive loss to fall to 1-3 on the year.  The three-point line was dominant in the game as DeSales made 13 of 23 three-pointers in the game while taking a total of 52 field goal attempts while Moravian was 14-for-33 from behind the three-point line while taking 67 shots. The first half saw a pair of hot shooting teams and several lead changes.  DeSales junior guard Rob Schubach would opening the scoring with the first of his five three-pointers in the game at the 18:32 mark while Moravian took its first lead, 8-6, on a three-pointer from sophomore guard Charlie Rigoglioso (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) with 17:16 to play in the first half.  The Bulldogs responded with a 9-0 run to take a 15-8 lead on a three-pointer from Braswell at the 14:22 mark.  The Greyhounds countered with an 8-0 run of their own to retake the lead, 16-15, on a three-pointer from freshman guard Sergio Camacho (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty), who scored all eight points during the Moravian run. DeSales took a 20-16 lead on a three-pointer by freshman forward Bob Zanneo at the 10:43 mark, and the Bulldogs would lead by as many as eight points twice, the final time at 34-26 with five minutes to go in the first half.  Moravian would put together a 9-0 run on a pair of Camacho three-pointers sandwiched around a three-pointer from sophomore guard Maurice Young to take a 35-34 lead with 49 seconds left in the half.  DeSales would finish the half strong with a three-pointer from sophomore guard Eddie Ward and a lay-up at the buzzer from senior center Ed Lapinski to send the Bulldogs to the locker room with a 39-35 halftime lead. DeSales was 14 of 27 from the floor (51.9 percent) and nine-for-15 behind the three-point line (60 percent) in the first 20 minutes of the game, and the Bulldogs made both of their free throw attempts.  Moravian didn’t have as hot a hand in the first half, but the Greyhounds were still 13-for-30 from the floor (43.3 percent) and eight-for-19 on three-pointers (42.1 percent).  Moravian made its only free throw attempt of the first half and had a 16-14 edge in rebounds.

The Greyhounds had nine turnovers in the first half while DeSales had eight turnovers. Schubach started the second half scoring again with a three-pointer to give the Bulldogs a 42-35 lead.  Moravian would get within four points, 43-39, after a jumper from freshman guard/forward Nelson Leon (
Reading, PA/Reading) at the 17:47 mark.  The Greyhounds trailed 47-42 after a three-pointer from junior forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) with 16:24 to play when DeSales put together a 13-0 run to seemingly take control of the game with a 60-42 lead on a three-pointer from Braswell with 13:29 remaining. The Bulldogs eventually pushed their lead to 20 points, 70-50, with 8:55 to go on a three-pointer from senior forward Matt Zwetolitz.  However, that was DeSales last three-pointer of the game and other than two Braswell lay-ups, the Bulldogs only scored from the foul line the rest of the way.  During that time, Moravian put together a 28-11 run to pull within three-points, 81-78, with just 23 seconds remaining after Young drilled a three-pointer after forcing Braswell to turn the ball over on Moravian’s press. Braswell missed a pair of free throws to get the ball back in the Greyhounds’ hands still down by three but a three-pointer from the right corner from Moravian sophomore guard Ryan O’Donnell (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) rattled in and out of the basket.  Lapinski grabbed the rebound and Braswell would hit two free throws to seal the game. DeSales actually shot the ball even better in the second half, making 14 of 25 field goal attempts (56 percent) and four of eight three-pointers.  The Bulldogs struggled a bit from the foul line, making just 12 of 19 free throws in the final 20 minutes.  Moravian cooled off a little in the second half, making 15 of 37 field goal attempts (40.5 percent), six of 14 three-pointers (42.9 percent) and seven of eight free throws.  The Greyhounds finished the game with a 35-32 edge in rebounds and had just 15 turnovers while DeSales committed 16 turnovers in the game. Camacho led the Greyhounds with a career high 19 points while shooting seven-for-11 from the floor and five-for-seven on three-pointers.  Young tossed in 15 points with three assists, three rebounds and three steals while Weaver scored 11 points and grabbed three boards.  Rigoglioso had eight points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals for Moravian while Leon and freshman forward Jeff Cullinan (Bridgewater, NJ/Immaculata) each had seven points with Leon adding four rebounds. Sophomore forward Chris Cullen (East Islip, NY/East Islip) had six points and three rebounds for the Greyhounds while sophomore forward Alvin Adams (Newark, NJ/Marist) grabbed three rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.  Junior forward Joseph Munley (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) had three points and three rebounds while senior forward Dave Bowden grabbed three rebounds for Moravian.

Women’s Basketball -- 3-1 (Landmark Conference 0-0)

Last Week – Defeated DeSales University, 67-63.

This Week – Tues., Dec., 2nd vs. The College of New Jersey, 7:00 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 6th vs. Scranton University*, 5:30 p.m. *Landmark Conference Game

Junior guard Jessica Foran (Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep) scored a season high 18 points and made five free throws in the final 19 seconds to help lead Moravian to a 67-63 upset of ninth-ranked and local rival DeSales University in non-conference action in Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds, playing their second of three straight games against nationally-ranked opponents, improves to 3-1 on the year while the Bulldogs suffered their first loss of the season to fall to 3-1. The game was also Moravian's home opener for the 2008-09 season. Moravian scored first on a jumper from junior guard/forward Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) before DeSales scored four straight points to take a brief 4-2 lead on a jumper from junior forward Caitlin Miller at the 17:54 mark.  The lead went back-and-forth for a few minutes with the Bulldogs taking a 9-8 lead at the 14:51 mark on a three-point play by senior guard LeighAnn Burke.  That would be DeSales’ last lead of the nigh as Moravian junior guard Amanda Brown (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven) connected on a three-pointer 15 seconds later to give the Greyhounds an 11-9 lead. Brown’s three-pointer ignited a 9-0 run from Moravian that gave the squad a 17-9 lead with 13:04 to go in the first half after a jumper from junior forward Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay).  The Greyhounds eventually pushed the lead to double figures, 26-16, with 8:07 to go before the intermission on a put back basket by sophomore guard/forward Amy Heffner (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland).  DeSales would get the Moravian lead back down to four points, 28-24 on a three-pointer from junior guard Kaila Wiand with 4:14 to go; however, Moravian only scored two more points and the Bulldogs netted one more point as the teams headed to the locker room with the Greyhounds leading 30-25.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well in the first half.  Moravian was 13 of 35 from the floor (37.1 percent), two-for-seven on three-pointers and two-for-two at the foul line.  DeSales was just nine-for-37 from the field (24.3 percent), two-for-nine on three-pointers and five-of-seven at the foul line.  The Bulldogs had a slight 26-25 edge in rebounds in the first 20 minutes while each team committed eight turnovers. DeSales hit the first basket of the second half on a jumper from senior guard Kim Rarick to pull the Bulldogs within 30-27.  However, Moravian responded with a 10-2 run to take an 11-point lead, 40-29, on a Stearns jumper with 15:02 remaining.  Over the next ten minutes, the Greyhounds’ lead would fluctuate from as many as 12 points, 48-36 with 11:36 to go on a three-pointer from freshman guard Hilary Murray (
Clinton, NJ/North Hunterdon) to as little as six points, 58-52, on a Miller jumper at the 5:13 mark.   In fact, Moravian had a 58-49 lead with 6:13 to go and would not score again until the 2:11 mark.  By that point, Rarick had pulled DeSales within a point at 58-57 to cap an 8-0 Bulldog run.  Junior forward Alyssa Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton) snapped the DeSales run with a lay-up.  Wiand hit a jumper with 23 seconds to go to pull the Bulldogs within a point at 62-61 before Foran took over at the foul line.  Foran, who is an 87.7 percent career free throw shooter, made five of six free throws in the final 19 seconds with her miss coming on her final attempt with three seconds to go, her first miss in 18 attempts this season. Moravian continued to struggle shooting the ball in the second half, making just ten of 29 field goal attempts (34.5 percent), two of seven three-pointers and 15 of 23 at the foul line.  The Greyhounds did limit their second half turnovers to eight while forcing the Bulldogs into 11 second half miscues.  DeSales did shoot the ball better in the final 20 minutes, making 13 of 30 field goal attempts (43.3 percent) but the Bulldogs were just one of three on three-pointers and 11 of 21 at the foul line in the second half.  DeSales did finish the game with a 52-46 edge in rebounds including 17-11 on the offense boards. Foran led a pair of Moravian players in double figures and had five rebounds and four assists to go with her 18 points.  Brown tossed in ten points for the Greyhounds with five boards while Stearns had nine points, nine rebounds and two assists.  Harrison also scored nine points for Moravian, the first time she failed to reach double figures this season, and Harrison contributed five rebounds, five assists and a pair of blocked shots. Heffner had eight points and eight rebounds off of the Greyhound bench while Murray had five points.  Bisci contributed four points and four rebounds while freshman forward Alexandra Blair (Hellertown, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) grabbed five rebounds off of the bench.
